  • SUNDAY in AMERICAN SAMOA is a day of rest, a day of worship, and a day to spend with family.
We've brought two friends along to tell their experiences growing up in American Samoa. They share some do's and don'ts and how best to experience an authentic Samoan Sunday.
We add lessons we've learned ourselves and some of our own favorite things to do on Sundays.
Whether you're religious or not, have local family, or if you're all alone, there's something for everyone to do on an American Samoan Sunday.
What's your favorite thing to do on Sundays? Have you been to a Samoan church service? Tell us in the comments below.
Thanks for watching and as always, let us know if there's anything else you'd like to know.

Born and raised in American Samoa in the village of Nuuuli. Loved this video because of the memories it brought back of growing up there. It warms my heart to know that a lot of what Sunday was like growing up is the same (which I actually already knew). but I thunk it's the scenery of "home" that made me happy. Thank you for that and for making us living off island feel like we are still home !

Not too different from Eastern Kentucky back in the '70s ..things shut down on Sunday, and the day became church and family day. Stock up on Friday, Saturday was sort of fun day, Sunday for church and family. Nothing wrong with that in the least...

    #AmSamFam
'ie lavalava is the general term for the wrap around sarong cloth.
But there are male-female distinguishing little subtleties to note.
The Sunday or formal ie for men only, is the plain colour, no patterns,(made with two pockets, for each hand), is the "ie-faitaga."
The bottom half of the women's Pule-tasi is called "ie-sulusulu, or ie-sulu." This may have a flowery or traditional pattern of some kind on them, and must always be worn with a matching top.
The ordinary, everyday, for the umu or for beach going flower design patterned ie, is called the "ie-solosolo."
This ie, is worn by both men and women.
And then there are Siapo, (Paternted traditional tapa cloth).
Plain Tapa cloth is called u'a.
Very large tapa used as floor covering, made today by Tongans is called "ie-'elei."
    You're welcomed.

On Sundays after toona'i we'd cruise up the west side to Halecks for some "donut bread" from Pritchards and some chocolate milk or Hokey Pokey ice cream, or drive to the Pauls bakery by the old Aveina Basket for fresh bread to eat with homemade koko alaisa or lau ki. In my very young days In Nuuuli my village, I was raised up in the Nazarene Church. I remembered walking to church on sundays and I would see men working on their lands. They were people from SDA churches. Maybe they don’t work on sundays anymore but in the 70’s I they did, I remembered this very clear. Thot to share this with you. I was a teenager then but I’m 62 now. Good nite from utah

Yes, there’s still a sizable population of people who attend the SDA churches. I tend to notice the businesses that are closed on Saturdays, more than ones that are open on Sundays. Probably because I’m looking to shop on Saturday 😄 I think it’s also become more accepted across most of the religions to do things like shopping on Sundays. The stores that are open, seem to stay pretty busy.

Watched nearly all of your videos and I am loving the channel. I have always had a fascination about this place although I've never been. I would be interested to see more about what visitors might expect along with nightlife (although as a young family I know that can be a challenge to experience it). Also, is it true that only native Am Samoans can own residential property? I may have gotten that mixed up with a different US territory

    • @AmSamFam
      @AmSamFam  Před 4 lety +1

We appreciate the suggestion. It is difficult for us to get out and show the local nightlife, plus it’s admittedly not really our scene. However, we can see how useful that information could be for would-be visitors. We’re on it! As far as land ownership is concerned, It’s all a bit confusing. I was under the impression that anyone, regardless of heritage, could own freehold land, but a fairly reputable source recently explained to me that you must be at least 50% native Samoan (by blood) to own any land, freehold or otherwise. Regardless, you should double check with a local law office before negotiating any land purchases. Thanks for watching!

Just trying to find you first one to know why you moved to A.Samoa.I was born in Apia many, many years ago and moved to NZ as teenager and now living in Arkansas for 30 years. AmSamFam thaofor the feed. My brother is working in Pago for the Samoan consulate but is currently in Apia with an illness. Maybe when he gets back there he can get knows touch with you guys and if you need visas to visit Apia he can help you. I was thinking of retiring back to Samoa but after my last visit in 2018, I know I can not take the heat. My legs were so swollen and my BP was up I was glad to go back to NZ and then back here. There’s another family with Vlog in Apia who left Texas to move to Apia 3-4 years ago. He is Samoan married to white girl and they have 3 beautiful girls.

Hey go check out in my village of Pago Pago what is known as the "vai sima". It is a water catchment that is shaped like a square swimming pool that is fed by a fresh water spring. I think the military built it as a water source for the village a long while back. We go there a lot to swim growing up. Let me know it you're interested and I'll give you direction.

Good relationship, as far as I know. There are only a small handful of full-time Coast Guard stationed here. They seem to live well and enjoy their time here. There are some places where you wouldn’t be allowed to fish on Sundays, but there are a number of public beaches that you could fish any time.
