Making a UNWARPABLE Steel Router Table Top!

  • Today I am installing my new custom made steel top for my wood router table and once again I have a flat surface to work on that will last forever, one of the challenges with MDF tops is they can droop in the middle over time and this makes it hard to route longer pieces such in cabinet door making, larger picture frames and anything longer than about 18 inches that needs a straight or decorative router bit edge or even a straight cut for inserting glass or other solid materials, the solution is to have a steel top made that is far more versatile and I can use mag switches on for the fence, feather boards, any kind of applicable jig I might want to use while routing.

    I bought the SawStop router table insert for their table saw. I got extremely lucky in that it fit, including screw holes, on my JET JPS 10TS. Again I just got lucky. I agree with Jan, it is always a joy to upgrade a tool. I use my router table a lot and the upgrade made a huge difference. Great video, enjoy your new router table and keep the videos coming and thanks!

    I mounted my router base to my table saw via a cutout made on the steel wing. Uses a guide that clamps to fence that accepts a vacuum, virtually no dust. The weight of the saw makes it steady, doesn’t take up any extra shop room, costs about $0 to set up. Table saw has wheel lifts on it so it can be repositioned for long or awkward pieces. What’s nice is that by setting the fence on the left side of the saw, i can push an approximately 36” wide piece through with full support.

    Glad those pistons worked out. I opted for cast iron (actually about same price you mentioned) with a lift. My favorite mistake - 46 pounds … wait 46 kilos. Made moving it a real adventure. And mag switch fence solution - very clever!

    The mag switch does not drop the magnet down inside, there are two magnets and twisting either aligns or mis-aligns the poles.

    seems like adapting the idea behind a Mr. Sawdust radial arm saw table would work well here - two 3/4" thick MDF pieces, sandwiched together with pieces of 1/8" thick x 3/4" wide x (length of table) pieces of steel epoxied into matching slots on the inner faces of each piece of MDF. Clamped to something flat and glued together, you wind up with a very stable piece of steel reinforced 1.5" thick MDF that you can then mill your T track slots into without fear of weakening it.

    I'm surprised you didn't have them etch reference lines, for center of the spindle and the fence. You could still have it laser etched, or acid etched if you want, but might have been nice having the cnc accuracy when it was cut out.

    I'm a newbie at 62 years old. I have a small farm and have always wanted to do woodworking. At this point my shop is 50x50 with a dirt floor and no windows (just holes for them). After hurricane Ida I find myself with about 200bdft of red cedar I've cut into logs, 4, and the thicker branches I've set to dry for smaller projects. The only tools I have are a benchtop planer, a table router, and a table saw covered in rust, a jigsaw and a determination to get a shop up and going by time the smaller parts dry.
    My one question is, if you had 400.00 to spend on one tool what would it be?

    I recently moved from a home made MDF table to a cast iron wing in my table saw. I'll also be using various magnetic things to help with my work.

    Great option Colin! You seem exceedingly giddy! Random question and I don't have time to go look at the vid. Can you or anyone recommend a Bandsaw saw blade size for a Central Machinery 14inch? How wide should I be looking for for resawing or veneering and also a good general purpose blade? This question isn't about the diameter of the blade, but the width from tooth to back. There's also charts I can look at, but I'm interested in what you and others have to say. Thanks to anyone who responds!

  • @mymkllr34
    @mymkllr34 Před 2 lety +1

    Great video! Really like the idea of using steel that will stay flat and true. My only question is about the fence. As there are no parallel slots to quickly adjust the fence, how will you position it accurately each time? It would seem having to square it up each time you move it would take a lot of time. Are you planning on scribing some alignment marks on the surface, or use a couple of squares each time? Maybe a set of rail guides attached to each side of the fence that ride on the edge of the top? Regardless, this is a great upgrade and I share your excitement for it!

    • @alland1241
      @alland1241 Před 2 lety

      Why on earth would you need to set the fence square, the bits are round, you can come at it from any angle and it will be parallel to the fence and as there is no track involved it's a non issue

    • @mymkllr34
      @mymkllr34 Před 2 lety

      @@alland1241 Good point. I guess I was just imagining myself taking a couple of passes on a piece and when I go to adjust the fence, if I only tried to move one corner back to increase the cut, knowing me, I'd inadvertently slightly move the other corner as well then I've over shot my measurement and ruined the piece. To your point, everyone else wouldn't make that mistake.

  • @jimspc07
    @jimspc07 Před 2 lety

    A great solution to non flatness. However, I can't understand why you did not use the existing slot for the fence magnets, it already has one straight edge and a jigsaw could have made the ellipse hole an easy cut but at 90 degrees rotation to your actual solution.

    Love your videos. Been a subscriber for years. Just want to suggest changing your thumbnail themes. I see content creators frequently posing with extreme body gestures, silly wide-eyed distorted faces, in an attempt I suppose to attract viewers. Personally I feel it is an insult to many peoples intelligence. Most of your viewers aren’t children I suspect so why go all out with such silly thumbnails? Sorry to be so picky because I know you work very hard to produce high quality videos and content. I just think people would take you more seriously if you stop with the over exaggerated thumbnails.

    • @MMWoodworking
      @MMWoodworking Před 2 lety

      There's actually pretty well done research that shows that thumbnails/titles that elicit an immediate emotional response fare far better than what I am assuming you would consider to be "serious" thumbnails. It doesn't particularly matter what response you elicit, so much as eliciting one in the first place. You have maybe half of a second to catch the viewer's eyes while scrolling. The thumbnail grabs the eye, and the title then hooks people. That's just how it is.
      I'm not sure why you feel it is insulting to you, that is just a bit odd, but look at it more like one of your favorite creators is trying to reach *new* audiences as well. Key word being new. People like you and I who watch his videos already don't really care about a thumbnail. Well, maybe you do, apparently, but in general my guess is you are not walking away because you disliked the thumbnail. In fact, it seems to have worked because it clearly did elicit an emotional response, followed by more engagement in the form of a comment.
      The Mighty Algorithm does not concern itself with the, comparatively, trivial thoughts of humans, it cares only for engagement. Engagement includes both positive and negative. People hate-watching a video counts just as much towards the algorithm as a view that is born from curiosity and excitement. Eyes are eyes.
      I wouldn't worry too much, Michael, if you like the content then you should already know that the service itself, the video, is not insulting your intelligence. The video is the actual service. If your favorite film had a silly cover on it would you say the director was insulting your intelligence? No, because you know the film is wonderful, and that the marketing aspect is not the service itself. The internet era is a brave new world, and what might seem like an insult to you is really just part of a new frontier of growing an audience.
      Cheers.

      @@MMWoodworking Wow, what a lecture. You feel better now? Maybe a little superior and virtuous, LOL. How about citing some of that research. I completely disagree with your assessment Miles but I appreciate your opinion. Colin is a great guy and I like his content despite his silly thumbnails.
