- In this video I am building a top for my new workbench that I want to be strong, flat and as light weight as possible so I am relying on a replaceable MDF top and Torsion Box Technology sub-top, in the form of a hollow core door, and it will help me match the size of my woodworking vice that needs to be mounted into this DIY workbench top.

The simple jig to drill the t-nut holes with the forstner bit was really clever thinking! Thank you very much for that and thank you for posting.
Love the door 🚪idea 💡
I think you and see Jane drill should start teaming up for a videos. You would really compliment each other and make it very interesting
She knows her stuff, I would love to do a collab with her. Thanks for watching.
I intuitively guessed the reason why all those cardboards inside table tops were used for, but here is the confirmation. Thank you.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
I was looking forward to this workbench part 2 video. Using a door in the bench top was a good idea. Finishing with a coat of paint was a nice touch. I’ve painted my workbench and not regretted it. 👍😎🇦🇺
Thanks for watching!
A cardboard web - so that's why they're so light! I'm on the fence between using a door w/mdf overlay as you did or just making one with a ply or wood web. Both have their pluses and minuses, like most wood working techniques. Thanks for sharing!
Really great design and work, Colin. Congrats on your new bench. RIP old bench.
Thanks for watching!

Torsion Box! How very interesting. Thanks Colin!
Thank you for the conclusion of that build. Wasn’t what I was expecting but turned out nicely. Good job.
Thank you for all of your excellent videos! Unfortunately as our hair turns silver having lighter tools in the shop becomes more important. But we still need the tools to be strong and good looking. You have accomplished all 3. Good build!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Awesome video as usual. I'm an electrician, when we have an open adhesive tube, we push a screw into the nozzle and then cap with a wire nut. only the nozzle dries out.
Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!
Wow Colin, this is the most relevant tip I have ever seen! I have no flat level surface to work on, but I will now!
Colin -- You should have recessed the fixed jaw of your vise into the top of your workbench. Done properly, this would allow you clamp a long piece against the edge of the top (using a deadman to help support the end of the long piece).
Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!
I like the style. It is totally functional yet easily mobile.Perfect for all of us with limited space
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
Colin, you never cease to amaze me with your practical, spot=on approach to woodworking. A interior door? Huh!
Very good looking bench. Hollow door with a solid replaceable top is a nice idea. Well done.
Awesome
Nice job I really like it and try the wax and caulking tube for sure those cheap caps they make don't work
The new workbench looks great and very versatile! So useful to be able to move it wherever you need or move it out of the way wherever you *don't* need it.
I also think you should make a mini mini workbench model to put on your mini workbench model! ;-))
Thanks for watching!
Great idea, Colin. I've been putting off making a new top for my bench, and this is the answer. I can also use one of those doors for flat storage for my lumber. Thanks!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
AMAZING. I've been using hollow and solid doors for years as bench tops for Habitat now "Restore" and they work great. However, your idea of 1/2" plywood for legs is a very interesting idea. I like it. I will follow and see how it works out. Excellent video and process. Wish you much success and Thanks for sharing. Your the best.
Thank you Sir! Just what I was searching for. A torsion box design being utilized as the main workbench. I also have a similar vise made by "Record". Excellent video and editing. It was a pleasure to watch. I learned a lot. Thanks again.
Whoah!!! Did you see the trick with dental floss? Brilliant hack!!!
Thank You!
Good luck finding a truly flat hollow core any longer. I tried and found 1/16” bumps and dips. I ended up making a torsion box top out of 1/2” MDF.
I think it is really only there to give some structural rigidity. By the time you have 3/4 of mdf on top a little variation on the door will not be important.
A nice piece of woodwork engineering Colin, well done
Hea I use caulking all the time and c came up with a way tosave the tube and not waste it just melt wax and keep dipping the tip of caulk tube In over and over let harden and wala good for a year that I've tasted good luck 👍
Love the idea of re-using the door as part of the top. Great build as usual
Thank You!
You are a brilliant brother , thanks a lot for your time and effort .. I really appreciate it
Peace ✌️
Very good idea, solid, strong (with a panel on top), flat, smooth....
When you put a peace of timber around it, no one can tell, super.
Willy from Belgium.
Thanks for watching!
I can't ignore the sick wooden watch
sick or slick???? i have one also, their neat.
Nice build but I think you should've run the edge fill strip the full length of the door, with the vice support block behind.
Looks fantastic! And yes, I like the idea of the grey top. It would make it better to distinguish between the base and the project you're working on.
Thanks for watching!
I love it! And the mini model is genius! Well thought out video too. I wish you would have repainted your vice!
Colin. I think your results would be better with making top from scratch. Hollowing your door and clamping new core I think introduced variation to the flatness. New top looks good though. Thx for sharing.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Man the Elves are complaining now lol.
Great bench start to finish well thought out.
Thank You!
I really like it and I think I’ll have a go at making it too! Thankyou for sharing and making it appear to be quite simple
I like the idea of the door and big plus forthe vise
Thank You!
It’s very educational video thank you for sharing.
Nice work. Looks very modern with the rounded corners.
Thanks for watching!
I like how you cut your hardwood edge pieces and wait a couple days for any movement. Always smart to take the stresses in the grain into consideration, since no two trees grew in exactly the same way, plus boards cut from different parts of the log dry differently, and you don't want those stresses pushing into your project and twisting it. I do wonder if the door will hold up over time as a torsion box for this application, since the cardboard separators work well for holding vertical pieces of lauan (or whatever plywood they used for the skins) apart for a door, but may crush down over time as a flat workbench top under the weight of projects (plus the lauan skins themselves may also be a bit 'crushable'). Cross-lapped 1/4" stock as in your demo, glued to both skins, may have given better performance. Hopefully the MDF topper will spread out any force and minimize this.
Yup, I'm curious how it's going to hold up too ... I'll keep you guys updated.
It turned out great Collin!
Thank You!
Nice job, you had me going with the painted top. I use skid pads.
Thanks for watching!
Very nice work thanks for all your ideals
Nice work bench.
Thank You!
Nice job, real working bench!
Thanks for watching!
👍👍👍
A brilliant build Colin, good job 👍👍👍I love the little mock up bench too lol. Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing the next vid 👍👍👍
That was a great idea on the door!!
Thanks for watching!
I'm very picky who I subscribe to. You sir make quality videos, so thank you.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Genius

As if I don't have enough videos of workbench designs and builds bookmarked, along comes Colin Knecht with his design to further complicate things for me. Whatever design I use, I need to make it out of pressure treated wood because our neighborhood has had termite issues in the past Fortunately for us. our issue with them was limited to the wood hurricane shutters stored in the garage. Since my severely overcrowded garage is also my workshop, I have to keep any wood stored in it protected, but the workbench will be out in the open, hence the need for PT wood for its construction. I'm sure that your design will take a lot less time to cut and assemble than the others that I have saved, so unless I change my mind, I think I have finally decided on a design.
Yup, I built this one to be quick and easy, so I hope it works out for you. Thanks for watching!
Another excellent video Col well done
Thank You!
@@knecht105 Your most welcome
Love your vídeos and your voice haha. Thanks for everything
Did you consider building a Ron Paul workbench that you could have storage under the top and also be light and movable. Of course, the legs could be similar to your new style to make it more stable. Nice bench 👍.
Very Cool top to your workbench Sir.
Thank You!
How's the workbench holding up? Any upgrades?
the looks aren`t bad either
Thank You!
Fantastic job, mate. 👍
Turned out brilliantly. 👏
Thank You!
I hope you disassembled that old bench so you could use the wood to build something else.
I happen to have a door, as new. I don't think I will bother modifying it. It is a good size as it is.
How did you arrive at the height of your workbench? I have an old one, I bought it used and it came with a vise., I have a tablesaw that's higher. I am taller than average, probably the new one should be taller tahn the old one, and again, the tablesaw is probably designed fr shorter people.
Looks good! I'm definitely going to adapt that base to my own needs, but I don't quite see the need for the torsion box sub-top. Still, good idea using a door for that.
Hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
The design is flawed because the filler plywood and vice are basically cantilevered over the end of the below frame support, I would expect it to be sagging on that end. I do agree using a hollow core door is a great way to get a flat + lightweight base for a work surface tho...
Good looking bench, only thing is when you come to flip the top you will have four sunken T-nuts underneath in an opposite corner, but other than that really enjoyed the build
Thanks for watching!
Not sure what you mean. Please explain further. Thank you kindly.
I don’t quite see the point of this design. By using the hollow-core door, you make the bench lightweight, but then you put a slab of MDF atop the door, which makes it heavy again. Anyhow, don’t you want a workbench to be heavy, so you have a stable base for your work?
WINDSOR DESIGN®
60 In. 4 Drawer Hardwood Workbench
look for it on sale....
Strong, but is it solid? IKEA desks (cheaper versions) are made similar, but with paper filling plus wood on each end.
Perfect! Any ideas about adding bench dog holes?
You could take some blocks, say 1.25 inch square with a .75 hole drilled through them and mortise them into the top
Colin, do you have a workshop hack that'll make my two car garage into a three car garage for more shop space? Then I can start on a torsion box bench :D
Just knock through into the house Nobody really needs a lounge and you can get rid of the kitchen and live on take out....
Sell the cars and buy a motorbike ;)
WoodWorkWeb Ha! Then take the leftover cash and buy more tools for the garage 😂
what kind of wood is the workbench top?
Hi Colin.I have a older b&d router that sometimes lets the bit ride up ruining the work piece. What should I do?
Couldn't you also have made a row of dog holes to use with the vise? Or do you think dog holes in the MDF would wear out too easily?
i think that would wear out too quick being MDF. Dogs holes are handy though
You would either want some sort of sleeve the dog holes or just be ready to replace the MDF as they wear out. Thanks for watching!
👍
Hee hee. When I have auto captions turned on, you say your name as “I’m Calling Collect.”
lol ... I guess I should go in and change that. Thanks for watching!
💯👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍
Thank You!
I think you missed the point of a torsion box with all the work you did on that door. It also doesn't have a very sturdy top. Pretty much a waste of time and materials.
What an ‘utter bollocks’ waste of time .……
