  • In this video I am building a top for my new workbench that I want to be strong, flat and as light weight as possible so I am relying on a replaceable MDF top and Torsion Box Technology sub-top, in the form of a hollow core door, and it will help me match the size of my woodworking vice that needs to be mounted into this DIY workbench top.

I was looking forward to this workbench part 2 video. Using a door in the bench top was a good idea. Finishing with a coat of paint was a nice touch. I’ve painted my workbench and not regretted it. 👍😎🇦🇺

A cardboard web - so that's why they're so light! I'm on the fence between using a door w/mdf overlay as you did or just making one with a ply or wood web. Both have their pluses and minuses, like most wood working techniques. Thanks for sharing!

Colin -- You should have recessed the fixed jaw of your vise into the top of your workbench. Done properly, this would allow you clamp a long piece against the edge of the top (using a deadman to help support the end of the long piece).

  • @JusBidniss

I like how you cut your hardwood edge pieces and wait a couple days for any movement. Always smart to take the stresses in the grain into consideration, since no two trees grew in exactly the same way, plus boards cut from different parts of the log dry differently, and you don't want those stresses pushing into your project and twisting it. I do wonder if the door will hold up over time as a torsion box for this application, since the cardboard separators work well for holding vertical pieces of lauan (or whatever plywood they used for the skins) apart for a door, but may crush down over time as a flat workbench top under the weight of projects (plus the lauan skins themselves may also be a bit 'crushable'). Cross-lapped 1/4" stock as in your demo, glued to both skins, may have given better performance. Hopefully the MDF topper will spread out any force and minimize this.

As if I don't have enough videos of workbench designs and builds bookmarked, along comes Colin Knecht with his design to further complicate things for me. Whatever design I use, I need to make it out of pressure treated wood because our neighborhood has had termite issues in the past Fortunately for us. our issue with them was limited to the wood hurricane shutters stored in the garage. Since my severely overcrowded garage is also my workshop, I have to keep any wood stored in it protected, but the workbench will be out in the open, hence the need for PT wood for its construction. I'm sure that your design will take a lot less time to cut and assemble than the others that I have saved, so unless I change my mind, I think I have finally decided on a design.

I happen to have a door, as new. I don't think I will bother modifying it. It is a good size as it is.
How did you arrive at the height of your workbench? I have an old one, I bought it used and it came with a vise., I have a tablesaw that's higher. I am taller than average, probably the new one should be taller tahn the old one, and again, the tablesaw is probably designed fr shorter people.

The design is flawed because the filler plywood and vice are basically cantilevered over the end of the below frame support, I would expect it to be sagging on that end. I do agree using a hollow core door is a great way to get a flat + lightweight base for a work surface tho...

I don’t quite see the point of this design. By using the hollow-core door, you make the bench lightweight, but then you put a slab of MDF atop the door, which makes it heavy again. Anyhow, don’t you want a workbench to be heavy, so you have a stable base for your work?
