They couldn't have possibly gotten someone more perfect to speak about Bowie. in all of his awkwardness, Byrne hit every nail right on the head about what made Bowie such a phenomenal musician.
Well Bowie invited Byrne to introduce him, so yeah
@@petterv6604 okay petter
Well, he's no Anthony Kiedis.....
@@sgt.thundercok4704 true California man betta
Not sure i get the "it was genocide" part lol
He knows a lot of adjectives.
Tommy Tucker lmao I was just thinking that
And had access to loads of cocaine
but make sense
@@anders671 I know it's been a while, but Byrne's autistic and always acted weird. He certainly wasn't using hard drugs in the 90's.
@@brandoncheek2597 I read about that some time after my comment. You are correct about the autism and all around weirdness, but I'm not sure about the cocaine. Byrne's still a genius in my book.
I love how he just basically yells "Heyoo" to start out his speech. I laugh every time.
ha! Reminds me of the THANKS! in Stop Making Sense..
My two favourite Davids.
Tomás Cullen what about David Gilmore
AlecFuEntertainment Damn I forgot about him. Well, two of my favourite Davids
Tomás Cullen agreed
What about David Lynch?
What about David Brent?
"The joy of reckless prophecy" The best description of Bowie ever given.
When folks analyze Bowie, they should watch this clip.
You’re high
Man, would I love both Davids Byrne and Bowie to do a duet together.
+Ryan Symons Adrian Belew should have been involved, since he worked with BOTH Davids.
Brian Eno too, of course!
I always thought of Repetition (on Lodger) as David Bowies take on a Talking Heads song circa 1978. I'd love David Byrne to record his own version - or even the Heads, but that's never going to happen.
Renegade Soundsurfer DJ from that album sounds very Talking Heads-ish as well
@@hairybug3833 From what I can gather, "DJ" was outright an attempt to mimic the style of Talking Heads. It was a poor imitation, but a fantastic song nonetheless.
I love David Byrne hair...
I think it is significant that the first thing he says is 'Don't lean towards the microphone'. When the Talking Heads were inducted 6 years later, he leans towards the microphone. I picture someone trying to coach him, but I am so much better with David Byrne being David Byrne. And his speech here is so perfectly summative of David Bowie. Thank you man.
I just interpreted the "don't lean towards the microphone" as him reading a stage direction out loud as a joke. Him actually leaning towards the microphone in 2002 was because it was too low and couldn't be adjusted for his height.
@@VinchVolt That's really cute and awkward because most likely nobody in that room caught that joke 😆
What a gorgeous, intelligent man
I was thinking the same, that I never realized how good looking he is. His brilliance only enhances his attractiveness
Really, Byrne might as well be talking about himself. He's MY Bowie.
+William Winslow He's my Bowie and so is Bowie, does that make sense?
+GrammarWizard If it doesn't make sense, well, then you've stopped making sense. And I approve.
+William Winslow well played
+William Winslow lol bless him, he mumbled a bit but he still made sense. I found it funny when he shook his face. I love byrne and especially Bowie. These guys are true artists. I'm still in shock that Bowie has gone, it doesn't sit right in my mind.
David Bowie was and still is...well..he always will be a true giant in the music industry....he'll live forever through his!!
David Byrne & Talking Heads, well just a truly fantastic performing band that execute there outstanding music perfectly....one of best bands to come out of America for sure!!
Both in my top 5✌🏼😍
when I was in high school my chemistry teacher looked a lot like him and boy howdy did I have a crush.
+buzzardbeatniks
Jealous.
Wait, my history teacher looked like him too. I didn't talk to a girl who didn't have a crush on him the entire time. He was also a damn fine teacher, in addition to being damn fine.
CZcams comments from years ago are fun sometimes. I would not have been able to concentrate on class.

this guy so beautiful
I just dont get how nobody laughed! That was a damn tough crowd, maybe they just didnt get him, cause that's one of the greatest, most contradicting, funniest speeches ive heard! It was freedom! It was genocide! He is a shrink, a priest, a sex symbol and a prophet of doom!
If you listen carefully, and you know Bowie, the things Byrne says are NOT contradictory, Its literally the best analysis of David Bowie I've ever heard.
That's probably why Byrne was chosen to induct one of the elite artists of all time.
I would image, that it's probably pretty hard to impress a Whole Room full of high powered Musicians, who are all striving to achieve at least half of what David Bowie has achieved as a Musician, muchless being able to match David Byrne.. very few get that kind of credit.. Much like Tommy James of the Shondells.

***** "well dressed cadavers". lol... that's a good one
+Nicolás García Lieberman Lets be honest: David Byrne has a really good message,- but lots of trouble delivering it. We can blame the room, and maybe they where rough that night. But Byrne felt uncomfortable and couldnt connect with the audience.Thats why I think it didnt come across to that crowd.
great speech by David Byrne im sure David Bowie approved.
Bowie didn't give a shit....He also turned down a knighthood from the queen
@@thomasandersen6719 bowie hand picked Byrne to stand and announce it for him. He respected him greatly and they were good friends.

My tinder bio
I was delighted to meet David Byrne in 2001, but never got to meet David Bowie, though I always held out hope that I would. RIP Wild-Eyed Boy.
+Eric Reed Because your dad's Lou?
god damn he's beautiful.
Fuck I love him. Both of them. They are both treasures.
David seems a little more relaxed these days. This induction is a lot like some of his songs, juxtaposition in rhythm. Bless this man, one of the greatest Scots ever born.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Byrne heard “Fame” and got inspired. It sounds very much like a Talking Heads Song stylistically.
One genius talking about another. Lots to love here
💫 don't lean towards the microphone ✨
David Byrne is a legend! I think he's got asperger's which accounts for the slight oddness.
Yeah, he's admitted to be board line. Which explains a lot of his detachment from his band mates and awkwardness.
Ahhh. Thank you, I didn't know that! Explains a lot.
+Georgia Tombs. That's the same thing I said when I read the interview.
Someone gave this a "thumbs down'? Where is humanity?
I’m so in love with him lol
I don't know if was because of Brian Eno, the musical bridge that connects David Bowie and Talking Heads in late seventies, but I consider the two (DB and Talking Heads) very alike someway. I knew TH because of Bowie, and for me was a natural transition from Station to Station to Fear of Music, and then the Berlin Trilogy and Remain in Light, even though the sound of these albums is very different and unique in their own way, I sense some connection between them, I don't now why.
Both were very original and very unique.
+UOR right?? I was literally just thinking about this exact thing this morning whilst listening to Fear Of Music (and not only this morning, I always do when I listen to this album); to me, FOM fits so perfectly in the Berlin 'wave', just like the Berlin trilogy (obviously) reminds me of Berlin so much. Generally, I feel like FOM is a very special album when it comes to TH.
How odd. I adore Bowie but can't bear Byrne.
Byrne selected Low as an influential album during his mid 20s so that explains a lot and I guess working w Eno is a big factor. Byrne reminds me a lot of Bowie, more than anyone actually, and to have him induct Bowie is actually so perfect lmao
I remember TH were not happy with the production on the 1st album , next album produced by ENO sounded totally different, for the better .

If he goes before I do, I'll miss him as much as Bowie. A true legend. My favorite American.

David Byrne and David Bowie (RIP) were very inspirational to me and my music. A lot of people compare me to Bowie and/or the Talking Heads. A compliment of course :)

A compliment to the highest order, you've left me intrigued about your music

That was the best induction speech ever.
this video should be called: how many different ways can david byrne use the word ‘ sex ‘
David is character, he is like a fizzy genius !!.
I wanna hug him
great speech! by byrne
I LOVE the way he says "advertisement"
This is possibly my favorite video on the internet
Love that haircut
Stellar speech.
I think his speech was unique, original and brilliant..just like David Byrne himself
well said David....awesome speech bro...I say the same about you and your music honestly
Bowie = legend
legend and creative genius!
So sad we never got to see the two David’s together
This can be read as a beautiful eulogy.
RIP Ziggy
Decent summation of how Bowie continued and reimagined the work of LITTLE RICHARD and ELVIS PRESLEY.
Amazing !!
Stopped making sense....
Perfectly said, Byrne.
For God's sake give us the accompanying Bowie footage!
He wasn't there
He is a lot like Sheldon Cooper. Love his laugh breaks, hahahah. Gotta love him.
Even his soft talking. I honestly wonder if Sheldon Cooper was slightly inspired by him, or if when casting for the character they noticed the resemblence 🤷♀️
@@glanni Glad someone besides me noticed it.
What great words.
I watch this everyday.
Is David genuinely moved here? I can't believe it!
best thing ive seen... ever

I really respect Bowie for just blowing all these shitty events off. In the end they as institutions mean nothing.
Quite a few artists ranging from Jerry Garcia to Johnny Rotten have noticed that this Hall is worthless.
Bowie turned down knighthood
Ah yes very well said love this...
Could you PLEASE upload the video of the Bowie retrospective that goes with this.

Hello. Ummm…
When David Bowie came along and rock and roll gave ‘em a shot …
and when I first saw him it was a very shocking yet it was very familiar
It was necessary and it was something that is needed
That was essential and like all rock and roll - it was visionary
…it was tasteless, glamorous it was perverse
it was fun it was class
it was sexy it was confusing.
And like rock and roll it was freedom it was pain
it was liberation it was genocide
it was hope it was dread
and it was a dream and it was a nightmare
It was about sex and drugs
and it was about combining literature with rock and roll
with art with anything you can name
It was about sex as an idea ‘n sex as reality
and sex as deliberating force
It was about a rebellion it was about a rebellion as a cliché
it was about a rebellion as an idea… it was about…
(laughing with sudden ‘what the fuck am I talking about’ gesture) …
it was about a rebellion as a billboard as an advertisement
It was about the joy of reckless prophecy…
It was ironic! When rock and roll became self-referential
It was about a joy and terror and confusion in our lives
It was about sexual politics / sexual theatre
it was a soundtrack to our lives - as someone else said…
He was both kind of a shrink and a priest
A sex object and a prophet of doom
He was kind of a welcome to a new world, to a brave new world
I’d like to thank him for what he did
To the core...
Amen!!
I hope you guys realize that David Byrne has aspergers syndrome making it hard for him to talk with people. He doesn't have stage fright at all.
There's nothing to suggest that. He said in an interview once that he was a strange child, and suggested he may have had borderline asperges but grew out of it. I don't understand why so many people constantly spout that he has autism/asperges. Even that was a self-diagnosis and even he admitted he didnt know. He's just not in his comfort zone when talking in front of people, as opposed to singing, where he is at his most comfortable. That is all.
tnucateM
It is because on his own website he stated he has Asperges, so many people think he was diagnosed with it, not self-diagnosed.
tnucateM The point is that Asperger's/Autism occurs across a broad spectrum, and many MDs have a very rigid definition of it such that many people who fall on the spectrum are undiagnosed. Its abundantly clear in Byrne's art, and in interviews with band mates that he most definitely falls on this spectrum. Read some quotes from Tina Weymouth. Byrne is a very high-functioning "Aspy", I have no doubt of it. If you've spent much time around these types, it all fits.
+Charles Black You are spot on.
Asperger's Syndrome is not real. He's just introverted. That's all. Getting on stage is difficult for 90+ % of all people. He just gets going when he performs, as we all do. In fact, it's just the norm. It would be more accurate to name the other 10% as Outgoing Syndrome. Asperger's is bullshit, and it's an excuse not to perform well under pressure. Don't accept the cop out. Improve yourself. Anyone can learn to perform in front of people. Anyone. And you don't need prescription drugs and a doctor to do it.
The DB´s! :D
DB geniale ......
😍😍😍
il video è incompleto.. vorrei vederlo tutto
Why didn't David Bowie go to accept his award? A performance and speech would have been awesome!
David doesnt like the idea of having to show up at an award show unless maybe it was of some importance to him. He's only made a few appearances but mainly to present awards if I'm not mistaken
he wasn't there because he was touring in Europe at the same time, you can check this out right here ;) www.vulture.com/2019/03/history-of-inductees-snubbing-the-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame.html
I don't get all the hate in this comment section
Why can't we see the actual presentation? 😞
David probably thought Bowie sounds exactly like me, when listening to Lodger album for the first time.
Woow David B. inducting David B. hahahah
They're different and the same....just found that out
Why is Cillian Murphy at the RnR HoF inducting David Bowie?
I'm thinkin' they were all passing the straw back stage :))) Disco Sugar Baby!!!
a very intelligent man yet it was hard for him to communicate
Bowie and Byrne should have collaborated...
From DB in interviews I saw
I can think he doesn’t care about this
He liked being musician , storyteller, artist, not ordinary person , funny , had best hair cut And rock god
🍸cheers DB
Byrne back then is literally Bill Nye
Like, same voice, same way of talking
Bowie is still the dark star of the show....
its about plain speaking, not a shopping list.
high. as. balls.
interesting
Is this Cillian Murphy’s long lost brother?
Note to self, do not overuse adjectives in presentation.
That's a good practice, but Byrne didn't overuse adjectives here, every one has a purpose.
WHICH ONE PERSON DISLIKED THIS!!!
The rest of the Talking Heads.
yo
Why does David defy time? Is he a musical genius alien?
