What made Bowie so good is that he observed people. He just loved being around out in the world. He would spend his time, people watching, or just chatting up a random shop owner or maybe a random person at a park.
He put his observations of life around him in his music.

He apparently wanted to keep it all to himself and endure it privately (with his family and a select few others, that is). I think he had lung cancer which then spread to his liver so his chances of survival were basically just not even there. In other words, because he knew he was dying, there was no public announcement like "yo, my days are numbered guys".
This situation being dissimilar to other celebrities who get diagnosed, who then make the announcement, who then also announce their plans to fight it. I think his doctor just told him he needed to get his affairs in order and start preparing for the end, so rather than deal with the endless press and publicity that would come from his "battle with cancer" -- he just kept it quiet so he could be treated like a normal human being for the rest of his life.
Also, it's a very private issue anyway, he probably just (rightfully) didn't think people had any business knowing until it was all set in stone -- even if said stone was his own gravestone.

I miss Bowie being on the planet very much and realize it will take some time to adjust. Like a 7.1 earthquake. A shift in reality.

There are other ways to affect the color. I had severely damaged an iris on one of my eyes in childhood (9% of it was intact) and it still haven't recovered so the damaged eye is lighter blue than the healthy one.
