    This all started from the 1996 Western Conference Finals between these same teams. Claude Lemieux of the Avs hit Red wings' Chris Draper into the boards from behind causing a broken jaw, shattered cheek, and orbital bone. The Avs won the series and eventually the Stanley Cup. This brawl was the peak of a penalty filled game. The game ended with over 228 penalty minutes handed out.

    • @williamstratton6399

      Making a clearly cheap shot from behind even worse was the fact that Lemieux bragged about doing it. It was then a certainty that this fight would happen at some point the next season.

      Nice breakdown but it goes so much further. Claude Limeaux had been a thorn in the Wings side even before the Draper hit, going back to when he was with the devils. The Wings ended Patrick Roy's time in Montreal a couple years earlier, and finally the Avs were once the Quebec Nordiques, and the Nordiques' final playoff series/games were beatings courtesy of the Wings.

    It started when Claude Lemieux put a cheap hit from behind on Kris Draper, sending him face first into the boards. Broke his jaw, nose and cheekbone…basically crushed his face. The fact that Drapes came back and played at a high level for years is pretty amazing.
    Also, you should check out a video about Pavel Datsyuk. The man revolutionized puck handling in the early 2000s-2010s, it’s like he was playing the street ball version of hockey, straight embarrassing guys who tried defending against him.

  • @Laochri
    @Laochri Před měsícem +1

    Is all started when Claude Lemieux hit on Kris Draper 14:07 into the First Period of the Western Conference Finals game 7, for checking from behind, Lemieux got ejected with a game misconduct, and suspended for first 2 games of the Stanley Cup Finals. Lemieux broke Draper's jaw, nose, and cheekbone. He had reconstructive surgery and had his jaw wied shut for weeks. That hit instigated one of the best rivalries to date. The reason they waited 301 days is because they wanted retaliation on Lemieux for that hit, but 2 games Lemieux didn't play, 1 was in Colorado, and they wanted it at home. That hit resulted in the Rule Boarding. I am a Colorado Avalanche fan and was at the game when Kris Draper got hit.
    Now, Detroit fans call Lemieux a coward for Turtleing. He covered up because Darren McCarty rang the hell out of his bell (as he emitted in an interview with McCarty years later). The Patrick Roy vs Mike Vernon fight. Wings fans will also say Vernon won that fight. For Roy having his Catcher on (theres a strap that holds it on), he did amazingly at holding him there. Vernon might have thrown some good punches, but Roy won that fight. The next season in their first meeting both Claude Lemieux Darren McCarty went at it directly off the opening faceoff. Then later that year, 04/01/98 they had another brawl. This time it was Patrick Roy vs Chris Osgood. You should check that one out also.

    While this was epic, and the culmination of a multi season rivalry, there was one earlier that was bigger, took place between the Montreal Canadiens and Quebec Nordiques during game 6 of the second round of the Stanly Cup playoffs. The 2 cities have always had a major competitive dislike for each other, and the 2 teams took it to a whole other level, they were divisional rivals who played each other multiple times per year, and met in the playoffs often. There is a 13 min video on CZcams titled Nordiques vs Canadiens Apr 20, 1984 Good Friday Game.

    This is one of the best rivalries in all sports. These two teams HATED each other. multiple Stanley Cups were won by these teams during this rivalry. Every game was intense. It all started with Patrick Roy getting embarassed one night and telling his team own, he'll never play a game for that team again.

    Claude Lemieux, the player who McCarty hammered, was one the most hated and dirtiest players in the NHL. The previous year, during a playoff game against the Red Wings, he dished out a dirty hit from behind on Chris Draper. He sent him face first into the boards and caused him to break his jaw, cheekbone, and orbital socket. Draper had to have reconstructive surgery and had his jaw wired shut for several weeks. Red Wing fans refer to this as "Fight Night at the Joe".

    If you like watching team brawls another great one is called Punch Up in Piestany between the Canadian and Russian Junior teams at the world championship. Went on so long they tried to stop it by turning out the lights in the stadium. Huge rivalry between Canada and Russia in hockey for decades.

    Guys who play dirty and then turtle like Lemieux when he has to answer for it should get an extra 2 mins. It’s beyond pathetic to do that when you know you’ve been causing problems for years.

      Claude was a cheap shot artist. It’s because of guys like him that fighting is an essential part of hockey. Someone takes a cheap shot at one of your guys, you don’t retaliate with another cheap shot…the refs are specifically looking for it. You send one of your goons to smash the guy who laid the cheap hit and both of them go to the box.

    Claude Lemieux was taking a lot of heat from people for "turtling". A couple games later he and McCarty fought again. You could see the two of them talking before the puck dropped. McCarty was giving Lemieux a chance to redeem himself in the eyes of the fans. He didn't turtle on their second fight and nobody was thinking of him as a coward anymore. A very classy move on McCarty's part. Losing a fight is fine, but being thought of as a coward is too much and NOBODY deserves that.

  • @j-rey-
    @j-rey- Před měsícem

    Claude Lemieux, whom Darren McCarty sent into another dimension, was one of the biggest scumbags in hockey. He was known as The Turtle bc he always curled up on the ground to avoid punches. In the playoffs from the previous year, he hit Kris Draper from behind, face first into the top of the boards (face into corner where players hop over onto the ice/bench), shattering many bones in his face. He never apologized, and the Red Wings enforcer, Darren McCarty, finally got payback over 300 days since the incident. Then went on to score the winning goal in OT. D Mac is a legend in Detroit.
    The Red Wings-Avalance rivalry in the mid 90's is infamous, and those teams, combined, won 5 Stanley cups in the span of 7 years - Avalanche with 3, Wings with 2.
