The regular season is almost over so find a game while you can. The NHL is fun but I think minor league games (AHL/ECHL) are just as or more entertaining. You see more fights, cheaper, and the arenas are smaller so you’re closer to the ice.

In the modern day, coming off the bench to get into a fight is an automatic 10 game suspension. There used to be bench clearing brawls, but they got rid of that because it was hurting the acceptance of the game. The old joke "I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out" isn't true any more, but it definitely used to be. You would probably enjoy a video about "The Good Friday Massacre" - 1984 playoff game between the Quebec Nordiques and the Montreal Canadiens. Absolutely crazy stuff to see.

I played for about 20 years through youth and high school and some college hockey. I have to say that fighting on the ice, with these rules and that mutual respect, is one of the most exciting feelings I can remember having. It’s actually fun and a great way to vent your anger for a minute. Afterwards you’re still gonna shake hands at the end of the game.
There's also a great amount of respect for the game and for one another. There's a high degree of teamwork, personal accountability and integrity.

This rough style of hockey is Canadian Hockey. It is the reason why Canada is the dominate hockey nation in the world - more than twice as many intetnational wins/medals than the next closest country - Russia. Thankfully, some US players and leagues have adopted the Canadian style of hockey and avoid the European Style of hockey.
The NHL was a Canadian league that expanded into the USA. Historically, most NHL players are Canadian, but that has dropped from almost 100% down to 50% today. Even hockey teams in the USA are half Canadian players or more.
Hockey pucks are vulcanized rubber that are frozen for game use, reduces bouncing of puck. Pucks are shot at average speeds of 88 mph up to about 120 mph.
The glass is 1/2 inch thick safety glass. The boards, can move a little, but are not padded and are boards, hard.
Body and Hip checks are legal providing 1) the head is not the initial point of contact 2) you don't hit people from behind, on the numbers on back of jersey and 3) hip checks must be above the knee.
Hockey players move at speeds of up to 28 mph and collisions between two players can occur at over 50 mph. Even though hockey players are app 20% smaller than NFL players, NHL Hockey hits are known to be over 20% harder than NFL or rugby. Then they land on ice or are smashed into boards - lol can't run out of bounds, in hockey, to avoid getting hit.
You are not allowed to hit anyone with your stick, unless it was a follow- through on a shot.
Fighting is illegal and results in at least a 5 min penalty or more. Fighting usually results in response to a dirty play/player - retribution and punishment - see ' the code'
Hockey players do not stay down unless they are really hurt, normally they pop back up and keep playing - other sports could LEARN from this
Most common hockey injuries are stitches and loosing teeth aka 'spitting chicklets' - when this happens, hockey players don't usually even miss a shift
Hockey players play through the pain on broken legs, broken feet, broken jaws, noses and facial bones. If at all humanly or inhumanly possible, hockey players finish their shift, the game and the series.
Ice Hockey is rated as the SECOND most difficult and tough sport, just behind boxing. Less than a 1% difference between the two. It is followed by football, mma....but who really cares about that.
Each game is a full 60 minutes, made up of three 20 min periods. The clock is stopped when game play is halted.
The NHL regular season is 82 games ( also has pre-season) and Stanley Cup Playoffs where you must win '4' best of 7 series, hence a minimun of 16 games to a maximum of 28 games played! An entire football season just to win the cup! Hence, it is the hardest trophy in professional sports to win! Finally,

Ken Lowe was the trainer for the Oilers and the Eskimos and he said a weekend of football ( one game) can produce as many serious injuries as a season of hockey.

And hockey isn't as physical as lacrosse, at least back when I managed to play in 4 national tournaments but it's taken all the real violence out of the game now.

No ones gonna make fun if you lose a fight, it's respected and honorable if you step up, win or lose both sides get cheered from fans. And both players have to go to the penalty box for 5 minutes anyways, unless they are injured then they'll get a quick stitch up and be back out before the games over. It's so ingrained in hockey that players will play with broken feet and whatnot after blocking shots until the play stops because, well, "I'm a man I ain't no bitch" type mentality. We tend to like to laugh at soccer and basketball players when they get lightly tapped and fall down crying in pain.
You will likely get chirped by the opponent's for losing but that's about it. Your teammates won't talk shit. At least from what I've noticed or experienced

Yes, the women's league is the PWHL, they have a decent presence here on CZcams. They even stream games live for free here. Unfortunately fighting is not allowed in Women's hockey so you won't see any fights though.
A fighting major is a 5 minute penalty as opposed to 2 minutes for a minor penalty.
There used to be bench clearing brawls but, now it's an automatic 5-minute major plus a game misconduct (The player is thrown out) if you come off the bench to fight so, it pretty much never happens anymore.
It's not allowed but i have seen the pwhl girls get into it too, tho not any full brawls where the refs wait till they stop

My question would be if you(or anyone) would consider him a HoF player for just his play, not the enforcing/instigating he does? Are his stats even noteworthy enough to even consider him for the HoF? Fighting is a 5 minute major, and yes there have been bench clearing brawls, a famous on was the Good Friday Massacre, Nordiques @ Canadiens Division Finals 1984 (there is a 13 min video on CZcams titled Nordiques vs Canadiens Apr 20, 1984 Good Friday Game). A minor penalty is 2 minutes or until the other team scores, a major penalty is 5 minutes, and does not end if the other team scores.
The PWHL just made a new rule to penalties called the "Jailbreak Rule" where if the defending team scores a short handed goal, the penalty is over and the player returns to the ice. I'd like to see it in the NHL

Small fights will just see roughing. Bigger fights will get multiple combinations of penalties.

There used to be bench clearing brawls back in my day. Five minutes in the penalty box for fighting and game misconducts depending. No thanks to the commissioner who gives game misconducts to players that take off their helmets to fight. He's trying to discourage fighting. He'd rather them shred their hands. He doesn't belong in hockey.
You may have noticed the defender in the grey jersey #75. He is a Canadian player named Ryan Reaves. As of last year he plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs. There are some good videos about him.
Hockey is a fierce sport. My cousin Jamie used to be the goalie for the women’s hockey team at Boston College. Her family had a goal in the backyard. When she was little her older brothers dressed her in hockey gear and put a stick in her hands. They told her “Try not to die” and lobbed pucks at her.
1. The WPHL started this year, it’s pretty good.
2. There’s no full on team brawls anymore. You might be able to find some in the lower lower level leagues but nowhere in the top 3 levels of pro.
3. It’s 5min for fighting and then they can add on more for things like instigating and it’s also a penalty if you take your helmet off before a fight.
That's simply NOT true. Brawls happen and have happened numerous times this season. Don't watch hockey much do ya?

There are some really good videos of opposing players talking to each other about if they "Want to go', "Should we fight"? Many times it's a mutual agreement, the back and forth conversation before the fights are super funny sometimes.

In the mid 90's in your later years in high-school age," junior" we had some practices that were fighting practices
1.) The PWHL is new and exciting to watch.
2.) Bench isn't supposed to join the ice on line brawls and you won't usually see it.
3.) Depends. Your typical 2-man fighting will be a 5-minute penalty each, so each team will be playing 4v4 instead of 5v5. There have been plenty of instances of game misconducts (10 minutes + ejection), and also smaller penalty infractions (2 minutes) like instigating.
Playoffs is the perfect time to tune into the sport for those who are new to it and the NHL is less than 10 games away from heading into playoffs!
This is why hockey is the greatest sport on the planet. Name 1 team sport that allows players to fight. Love it

2) that used to be a lot more common but now it's a big no-no. Like if we ever saw that again it would be pretty big news
3) 5 minutes is the standard unless the refs feel like a player deserves 2 more for instigating. Or unlimited time for doing something crazy during the fight which does happen but is treated as like a violation of hockey rules to the fullest extent and usually gets criminal charges. Like a stick to the head can be a 2 minute penalty or an assault charge and lifetime ban, depending on the intent.

If you wanted to f8nd out who the best athlete was out of a group of guys you wouldn't tell them to lace em up, wouldn't throw them a basketball in fact you wouldn't have them play a team sport at all because they all have special skills that you have to develop.
What you would do is have them run , jump, throw something or lift something which is why the best athletes are Track and Field athletes.

I grew up playing hockey in Minnesota… no coors light but plenty of whiskey and vodka… oh and always have a dip in as well. The bench was always just covered in chew spit lol. Me and my boy were always the goons of our teams, I was the short scrappy goon and he was the 6’4” “big guy” that no one wanted to mess with. It was always kinda fun to get into fights in high school, juniors, and eventually college with him. In fights off the rink, sometimes I would be out numbered and these other guys think they have me in a bad spot… I would tear down 1-2 of them and if I ever was even close to getting into trouble handling them Ryan would just calmly step in the middle and start choke slamming kids out of the circle lol. Good times.

The PWHL (Professional Womens Hockey League) had their inaugural season this year.
I would say even if fights are really fun, thats not the intent or purpose of the game. You dont go there just to fight unless theres another enforcer on the team and you wanna give the people a show. The beauty of hockey is the game itself, and the skills they put on display shows the difference between hockey and other major sports. Glad to know you learned about the code👍🏼

Bench clearing brawls in the NHL were more prevalent in the 70s and early 80s. But now,there are stiffer penalties for leaving the bench to join a fight now, including multiple game suspensions and heavy monetary fines.
The ref can't even break up a 1v1 fight until someone hits the ice. 😊

The answer to all your questions is yes. Minor penalties are 2 mins, 5 for fighting, and depending on a penalty a game misconduct, potential fines or league suspensions. More importantly I'd ask this. Who goes to the locker room with a broken jaw, 16 stitches to the face, a broken ankle, hand, ribs knees and return to the ice 5 minutes later.
Unless maybe MMA, without the frozen 100mph pucks and giant razors on every player's feet. It's beautiful brutality. The Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy to win in sports. Thank you for your perspective on my favorite sport!
The first time I watched hockey I couldn’t believe that they just let them fight and the announcers called it.
The PWHL is the Professional Women's Hockey League. While checking/hitting is allowed, fighting is not at all allowed, however, there have been some games where pushes and shoves have happened.
Standard penalty in NHL is 2 minutes - things like tripping or slashing or roughing etc. If you get one of these, your team goes shorthanded 4 v 5 for two minutes, or until the other team scores.
Fighting is a 5 minute major, but both teams still have 5 players on the ice.
There is also 10 minute misconducts tossed out sometimes if they just want to get players TF out of there for a while, and those also keep 5v5 going.
You can get a 5 minute major for a really dirty hit like a boarding when you ram a guy from away from the boards so his face hits them first, or an egregious slash. A high stick to the face where you draw blood is a double minor penalty, 2 x 2 min powerplays. On a 5 minute major powerplay the other team can score as many goals as they can and the penalty must run to the full number. On a double minor, if they score within the first 2 min, it completes the first powerplay, and starts the second one at 2 minutes.

You'll also see 2 people beat the shit out of each other and after the fight talk like they're long time friends and nothing ever happened.
Lots of classic bench clearing brawls on CZcams, Blackhawks North Stars is probably one of the most famous. Most well known brawl is Mike Milbury (the shoe incident) and other Boston Bruins going into the stands after FANS. As for penalties, you can have 5 minute majors for fighting, these usually off set with both teams getting the same amount of minutes. BUT, refs often add 10 minute misconduct penalties that essentially remove a player for one period (5 minute fighting, 10 minute misconduct, 20 minute period). If the ref tacks on a roughing, elbowing, tripping or whatever started the fight then it can be 17 minutes to one player. There are also penalties for instigating (just one guy wants to fight) 3rd man in (self explanatory) and bench misconducts.
5 for fighting, no benches unless you go back aways. Just catch a period or game. It's a good time.

As a Canadian kid I can tell you these rules weren't just for hockey. These were the playground rules. (granted I'm Gen X - it might be different now). We roamed in packs and every neighbourhood, and every park had it's own pack. You learned this stuff young, without it being explained... you just knew. Star players were the little kids... you don't hurt or let a little kid get hurt. Also, if a kid in your pack had a pool or trampoline - he was a star player because if he got in trouble he'd get grounded and everyone would lose access. It's not like we were throwing down, but looking back some games got rough or dangerous. (is that a Canadian term? We say throwing down in reference to throwing gloves to the ice to fight).

An important change in the rules since then is that removing the helmet before a fight is against the rules now. This is to discourage fights because people don't usually enjoy punching helmets
Bench brawls hapoened in the 70s. It is completely illegal now. Also new rules are if a fight starts and any other fight at the same time is a game misconduct.

Fighting results in a 5 minute major penalty for both players involved. One of the players may get a 2-minute minor instigator added if he was the clear instigator, but this is unfortunately not enforced consistently around the league.

You used to be able to clear the benches but that’s outlawed. Fighting penalties are normally just 5 inures in the box but if there is some extra egregious shit that happens you can get 10 minutes or ejected maybe even suspended for a number of games

Good stuff man. You are very observant and you picked up on things automatically from the hits video you did before this. Most people don't quite understand what they are seeing right away and it takes them a bit to figure it all out. The NHL playoffs start in just two weeks. The top 16 teams will play 4 best-of-seven series that will conclude in mid-June. There is no other league with such a long and insanely difficult playoff competition. If you are tempted to try watching some hockey, this is the perfect time. It has been a long time since we've seen such a close race where most of the league is still fighting for a playoff spot, separated by the smallest margins, and different teams moving around the standings every day. For instance, in the past two weeks, the top spot for each conference has changed every day. This is extremely rare. The playoffs are going to be insane because all the qualifying playoff teams are so closely matched.

- There is a female NHL equivalent, and it was just founded this year. It's called the PWHL (professional women's hockey league)
- I see the bench one is already answered
- Typically fights are penalized with both players getting a 5 minute major penalty for fighting (which offset so neither team gets an advantage). However this does vary in some cases, for example fighting near the end of the game usually ends up in players being given 10 minute misconducts and thrown out for the last few minutes.

When it comes to rivalry, there is a lot of historical bad blood between the original 6 nhl teams: Toronto maple leafs, Montreal Canadians, Detroit red wings, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston bruins, and New York rangers. Each of those 6 teams have 1 or 2 top hated rivalries. As leafs fan, the 2 teams that are on top of the list are the bruins and Canadians. Definitely a lot history and bad blood in 107 years of hockey

Coming off the bench to start to get involved in a fight is a thing of the past. The suspensions for doing so are severe. As for the penalties. Fighting is a 5 minute penalty. Only real exception to that is if you clearly instigate a fight (aka jump a guy.) add 2 minutes for instigating to the 5 minutes plus an additional 10 minute misconduct. Important note on that is if two guys get 5 each for fighting the teams don't lose a man off the ice. The players come back after their penalty time at the next stoppage of play, but if a guy gets a extra 2 minutes then his team will be shorthanded for that time (5 on 4) and a teammate has to serve that 2 minutes. Also if they get a 10 minute misconduct the team is not shorthanded for that time but the player has to serve that time. (So instigating you could be sitting for 17 minutes while also giving the other team a 5 on 4 advantage for 2 minutes.) There are also game misconducts in which the player is ejected from the game. Finally goaltending is the hardest job in the game and also the one position where you can singlehandedly win or lose a game for your team in any sport. (Also the greatest rush you can have. Yes I was a goaltender and yes we are nuts. 😁)
I started to learn how to skate at the age of 7, the following year at the age of 8 i had my 4 upper teeth knocked out by a skate.
Took a wrist shot to the forehead. Stright knocked out , woke with no clue who i was, or anything.
Took a stick to the left eye, had the guy dropped the stick a 1/8 lower i would have lost my eye. Doctor said.
Was at a tournament, playing ping pong while waiting around, cut the inside of my little toe and next toe on some stupid metal lawn chair, no way to bandage, next game by the end of the game my skate was full of blood.

Blew both knees out, have no Cartlidge in either knee.

1: Yes, there is a Female Pro Hockey league -PWHL, and they are pretty good! NHL All Star week, they invite a few to compete in the skills competitions. 2: Clearing the bench in a brawl holds bigger penalties and at times expulsion. 3: Penalties: 5 minutes for fighting (actually a Band by that name!), but not short handing (Power Play) the team.

I can remember watching Winnepeg play before they left playing the old Philadelphia bullies no helmets I can remember Bobby Clarke lining up at face off and his wingers no helmets no teeth it was best game I saw live Randy Carlyle on Winnipeg defense no helmet dave cristian then next night got to see my favorite player gille bear perrault he was on buffalo sabres best two games and it was something always will remember went to Winnepeg practice got Paul Mcleans stick he was a coach eventually like Carlyle but seeing barber booby Clarke all standing there all no helmets and no teeth they were called broad st bullies something like that but we were down there for a Bantam hockey tournament and we stayed a full week took train via and tournament was only 4 days and are coaching staff set it up for a week there so he could book us for the two nhl games and practice refs were staying in are motel got Bruce hood's autographs and all the jets plus pucks and a beautiful Vic Ville Hockey stick from Paul McLean still have it to this day and back then they burnt there names into stick wasn't long after aluminum sticks came out and Koho round stick came out but just something special coaches did for us then the team left Winnepeg Manitoba and glad there back I still remember talking to Dave Cristian and Randy Carlyle and Paul McLean who was nice enough to give me his stick and the biggest thing seeing Gille bear Perrualt my favorite player back then he was one of the shiftiest players in the nhl at that time
