    i'd like to think that the only reason why zurg never fully thought things through or went through different, likely less complicated plans that you detailed, is that he was single minded. he was so focused on the end goal he didn't think about the potential consequences of what he was doing. besides, in the end, it just sounds like he was doing it more for himself than for his friend, considering the fact that she was already happy where she was with her own life and family.

    • @jesussalazar1901
      @jesussalazar1901 Před 2 lety +38

      Most villains (I mean 99% of them) believe their actions are justified by the end goals without realizing it was never going to workout at the end, or in long term. Also Zurg/Old Buzz clearly is a case of villain driven by madness, which from a narrative perspective Buzz realize by only focus on the end of mission and not the journey was driving him to become a villain in the eyes of a lot people. Which agin similar to the Toy Buzz was in Tunnel vision to the fact he couldn’t accept he was a Toy just like the Buzz in Lightyear couldn’t accept the failure of the mission created new lives.

    • @Scardy
      @Scardy Před 2 lety +33

      Yeah, his actions didn’t make tactical sense, but they made character sense.
      Buzz was shown over and over to be single-minded and driven to the point where he made silly mistakes and overlooked important details (like telling the rookies about the timer on the stealth mode) so it makes sense that old Buzz (Zurg) would have the same flaw.

    Here’s how I would’ve done it:
    His name was Neil Lightyear (named after Neil Armstrong, as Buzz Lightyear is named after Buzz Aldrin) he is a space ranger before his son, Buzz. He rebelled against star command, and build his own army, as he believed that star command should be his. Therefore, Neil was kicked out. Later on, Neil became a Xenobot, an organic robot, after a new experiment with his robots. Neil Lightyear was no more, and he gave himself a new identity: the Evil Emperor Zurg

  • @kalanilugosi393
    @kalanilugosi393 Před 2 lety +376

    I think that the whole basis of there being a “true” Zurg is around the fact that Old Buzz “borrowed” the suit and that it was all alien technology. Also I think that maybe the reason the robots can only say Zurg is that maybe the Alien civilization that created them may have communicated in a different way than speaking or that they just weren’t really made to have conversation as they are seemingly only made to attack things.

      Interesting theory, and it could be plausible, because Old Buzz did say in the movie that he just happened to come upon the technology, while making a few adjustments to simplify operating it with the tech he had with him currently. And just so other people know, I actually enjoyed the movie, including the plot-twist. In all honesty, at this moment I thought of Harvey Dent's quote from the dark knight: "you either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain." Call me an idiot or any other name you can think of, I don't care. I enjoyed the movie, just like i enjoyed the sequel trilogy, and that is my honest opinion.

    Imagine if Buzzurg was fully aware of his situation, and his story wasn't entirely true.
    Sox was there, and I can't believe he'd allow Buzz to fall off that much. Obviously Buzz spent about as much time traveling as he did physically aging, and I would hope Sox was able to handle the anger and obsessive disorder like Zurg was portrayed to have, no matter how many sleep darts were required. His mental health would be upkept, and a lifetime with Sox at his side would have value to a person like Buzz. Their goal would change trajectory again, wanting to return to a point where there are people to be with. Perhaps they searched and didn't find any humans for a long time, eventually finding a rare few and learning the colony was destroyed by something.
    I'd like to see a Lightyear 2: infinity and beyond explore this angle, completing Buzz's journey toward this threat - perhaps a real Zurg arrived in the original run of events, and Old Buzz wants to stop him, but how? He's arriving into the war zone with no information, no one prepared for galactic warfare, just a planet full of people he doesn't know, a leader who is hostile to Buzz personally and likely won't listen that the shield alone isn't enough for alien invasions, he'll need a demonstration and time to build other defenses and personnel trained for this level of action. Suddenly Old Buzz or Sox concludes that the best person available for the job is a younger Buzz who still has access to the people of the colony. They'll play it safe and give the young ones twenty or more years, but Sox wonders if they can travel beyond the first time they perfected the core crystal McGuffin? So they make a plan just in case, to play the bad guys and give Little Buzz some "training on the job" along with any information they had - the name "Zurg" and space combat training and oh, what a happy accident - Baby Buzz collected a rag tag team. Mission failed successfully, Old Buzz commits to the bit, tainting the option of time travel for his younger self and any other person who may try to abuse it like he did when he was younger.
    At the end, as Zurg drifts in space, he wonders what to do next. Is there anything else they can do? A compartment opens, and the missing parts of Sox look out at him, ever ready to offer an ear to listen. Without many options, they attempt to blend into civilian life, where they're eventually caught, affording them the chance to tell the whole story and hopefully set up a future where the colony survives the arrival of Emperor Zurg.

    I do believe it is implied that the reason Zurg traveled back to that point in time was due to the crystal being used up.
    Basically Zurg planned to travel back and prevent the crash, but the crystal didn’t have enough power and Zurg ended up at a later point in time. This would explain some of Zurg’s confusing behaviour since he never planned to travel to that point in time and had to adapt to the circumstances.
    Still doesn’t explain everything since he still had a week before Buzz arrived.

    I'm no multiverse expert, but Could it be that there was a side effect from old Buzz's hyperspeed? In the beginning the turnip was at hyperspeed but we don't know how fast, then his tests don't successfully reach hyperspeed. Then old Buzz pushes his XL15 as fast as it'll go for centuries worth of hyperspeed, Could something have caused his mind to have been damaged? Space dementia (from Armageddon lol). Then he would irrationally be so single mindedly focused on completing the mission. He does say it all took a toll on him... then his mind snaps and he goes evil... same as Anakin, all he wanted to do was save his wife. Then the whole "Anakin is gone. I am what remains" could work for Zurg. In Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Zurg says "I'm not going to kill you, I'm going to take the galaxy's greatest hero and turn him into ...me." that could have meaning? Lol.
    But overall I think this opens 2 story arcs, Buzz did borrow or steal everything from someone. Was it nothing more than an old abandoned mining company that left their ship, or some future warlord (real Zurg)? Then when Buzz thinks it's his dad, why does it almost seem logical to Buzz that it could have been his dad? Buzz wasn't like "holy smokes! Dad?! What in the world are you doing here?!" So maybe his dad was lost in space or could potentially be a villain, and that is why Buzz is so hell bent on being the *good* Space Ranger.

    @vadiamgamer9753 Před rokem +6

    Let's take a look at some of the other lines of dialogue in the movie. When Zurg told Buzz that when he was testing the time travel device he manufactured. He said that it wore both himself and the crystal out. Time travel is NOT something to be messing around with or taken lightly as Zurg said "it's not an exact science". When one uses time travel, it generates chronitons that will allow a ship to enter the time stream and navigate it to a specific set of temporal coordinates, if done correctly. From what I have seen, Zurg did not have any sort of temporal shielding to protect himself from the radiation that would be created from time travel. I know that someone may say "well, what about when both he and Buzz were doing the hyperspeed tests?". For starters, those crystals he was using only allowed him to propel himself through space, and a very SMALL amount of space. Time Dialation was an unpredictable side effect probably due to the properties of the minerals they harvested from the planet. Then we get to the point where Zurg fled Tikani Prime and traveled centuries into the future. The chronitons generated necessary for a ship like the XL-15, compared to that of the Mothership, to enter the time stream makes the chronitons generated for Zurg's escape into the future practically nothing. Hence why he didn't start to become unstable until his time travel experiments.
    Which brings me to my next point. One of the hazards of temporal radiation is that it can affect a person's neural pathways, ergo, a person's memories. This can explain why he couldn't remember Izzy from the holomessage his friend left him after his mission on the XL-14. This can also affect one's way of thinking and why he became so obsessed that he couldn't tell he wasn't being affected by the changes in time. Zurg is literally mentally unstable and can't process certain things beyond what he believes which he uses as a grounding point for him and all of his choices. Plus, it is said that the crystal was worn out to the point where it was THEN that he realized he needed a new one. Since he's mentally unstable, and unfamiliar with the inner workings of the ship he "borrowed", he couldn't perform the necessary equations to conduct crystallic fusion. We know that Sox had worked on the formula, and could have saved it on his hard drives, but when we see future Sox. He was damaged with the parts inside his head showing and his eye being different. He could have lost the data of the formula when he was damaged. This left Zurg with no choice but to go back in time to get a new crystal. However, with the state HIS crystal was in, he could only go back to a week before Buzz's return in the XL-15.
    Another reason as to why Zurg couldn't conduct crystallic fusion with the future technology is because of a simple thing. The species that created the Mothership most likely didn't use hyperspeed crystal technology. When in the engine room, we don't see anything related to crystal technology, so he was forced to reverse engineer and build a modified version of the hyperspeed engine from the Turnip to use his crystal for his tests. Who knows how long that took him to accomplish. And let's not forget that when Zurg first found the ship. It was adrift in space showing no signs of movement. And it wasn't stated that the Mothership was state-of-the-art when it came to technology of that era, even though it was more advanced than his technology from his era in time. Zurg could have gone aboard, accessed the ship's systems, and found a way to activate the robots. He then could have found a way to implement himself into the system to be recognized as the leader with help of Sox. The robots, which probably aren't programmed to actually speak outside their native tongue, did not recognize a word from Buzz's language. They could only say "Zurg" as it was the closest thing they could come to "Buzz".
    Sorry for the ramble, but I just wanted to leave this here as my explanation to Zurg in Lightyear. What are all of your thoughts?

Never mind the fact that the tone is just completely different from what the original set. Buzz lightyear was a parody of many sci-fi movies of the past and this movie just doesn’t feel 90s at all. It doesn’t feel at all what Andy would of watched back in the early 90s. Also buzz becoming Zurg in this just doesn’t feel right especially with how he’s portrayed in toy story 2

    I think the theory that the alternate Buzz isn't the true Zurg makes sense. After all, he did just find a suit that was already made. It was also taller than the original Zurg, so it would make sense that this Buzz stole a suit used by the true Zurg, for things like space travel. Also, the reason he didn't go back farther than he did is because he completely burned out his crystal at that point. He couldn't go back anymore, unless he got the crystal his past self made.

    In my opinion, Lightyear was not thought out well. And not to mention that the fans were not taken into consideration at all. For those of us who have seen the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command tv series, the Zurg there is the Zurg we love. Unfortunately the Zurg in Lightyear feels way too much like a ripoff Evil Buzz from BLOSC trying to be Zurg, in a Zurg exo suit. The BLOSC Zurg was tactical, methodical, and scheming. Lightyear’s Zurg is just a hulking brute who would rather punch his way through a door than try another way of opening it.
    The only good thing about Lightyear’s Zurg is the design, which some might say is debatable at least.

And yes, I did see that controversial scene with the audio description turned on, but I kind of ignored it. Regardless, I still liked the movie for what it did. That twist was definitely something I did not expect. But now that I think about it, given that Zurg in this in universe movie is basically an evil version of Buzz, I guess whoever thought of the idea of making the Buzz Lightyear cartoon within the Toy Story universe decided to change that twist by having Zurg and evil Buzz as separate things.

  • @Michaeljefferson9000
    @Michaeljefferson9000 Před 2 lety +11

    I feel like a lot of these questions are based on misinterpretations of what we saw in the movie.
    Zurg still existing doesn't mean he was wrong about time travel, because it could be as simple as time travel in this universe not working how we assume it should. It's not the story's fault we got it wrong. My assumption was that Zurg became detached from his own time when he traveled backwards, so that future not existing wouldn't effect him.
    Just because one society has technology far superior to another's, that doesn't mean their scientific concepts, methods, or resources are compatible 1:1. Zurg, a super genius by today's standards, had to mash up a rig with an operating system he already knew to even begin to understand how it all worked (which apparently took over 50 years), and then he would have needed the raw resources that are combined to make the fuel source, and _then_ he would have needed the exact ratio to put them all together. It's the entire reason he had to attack the city in the first place, he didn't even have the resources necessary to start the work.
    Zurg would have little way of knowing the exact day and time Buzz would be returning to the marooned planet, considering Buzz didn't even know that 22 years had passed until Sox did a scan and told him. The fact that he even got within a week of the accurate date is practically a miracle.
    The most Zurg could do was have a robot scout the location for the ship until it showed up, because the vast majority of the robots were trying to bring town the plasma shield wall for the last week.
    Zurg was pretty explicitly not trying to kill Buzz at first, because as soon as the ship was discovered the robots understood Buzz was there and consistently tried to teleport him to Zurg's ship.
    Zurg did, in fact, try to find Buzz and talk to him as soon as possible but needed to down the ship they were in first. Note how the robots' weapons were easily able to destroy the craft the rookies were going to use, but Zurg's personal ship - even with a direct hit - only managed to drop them out of the sky. Once face-to-face he could have killed any of them if he wanted to, but very blatantly avoided actually hurting them.
    I doubt that I'm 100% correct about all of this, but the given reasons in the assertion that Zurg doesn't make sense don't really hold up based on the movie's actual narrative, in my opinion. And sorry if this is kind of jumbled, I'm typing all this at 2 in the morning.

    The reveal of Zurg was one of the biggest twists in children’s cinematic history. This was more shocking than Darth Vader’s reveal. A future version of the hero, obsessed with correcting his mistake to the point where the existence of the hero’s friends were at stake. The metaphoric gesture of the plot is much bigger than the plot holes Isaac has mentioned and are nearly un-noticeable.

The movie was mostly well written other than the Zurg-related plot holes, and I love the idea of him being Buzz from an alternate timeline.

    I think that the most important thing to remember considering this is that surf had decades to stew on all of his failures, and in specific his failure to complete his mission. Zurg unfortunately fails to reach the point in time that he is attempting to and then scrambles to fix his mistake by searching for data on the time crystal in the colony, but since that is destroyed he sets out to find buzz, but he isn’t able to locate the exact location and time because he hadn’t marked it exactly when he rushed off, so he sent out search parties designed to bring buzz and his ship to Zurg.
    I have a different theory as to why Zurg wasn’t able to recreate the time crystal in the future, and that is that the time crystal was over engineered by socks. Socks spent an entire lifetime running computations, simultaneously improving at designing better and better time crystals. It is possible that the hyper speed crystal that socks designed was overengineered to go fast at the expense of being way overcomplicated to achieve lightspeed. This would make sense since socks kept the data to himself, worked 24-7 on it, and the rest of the colony had eventually given up on designing space fuel over time. Socks had nothing but time to design the perfect fuel, but it was unnecessarily effective, and it allowed for time travel. As for why the future didn’t have the fuel, it’s because the fuel would be unnecessarily complicated to make and they had moved on to teleportation (a technology they show us) therefore they had no need for hyper speed crystals or things to test these crystals with. I think that Zurg actually understood time travel, otherwise he would not have been willing to kill buzz, I think he knew that by creating a variation of his life where he succeeded, he would have the knowledge that a version of himself had saved the colony

    imma say it right now, zurg being a future version of buzz is my FAVORITE thing about the movie, i love when they did it in lego movie 2 and i love it even more here, it truly shows how low a character can get like emmet from the lego movie being a wholesome boi absolutely changing to something else, its so fascinating bc you never expect them to act like way showing them 2 side by side, especially how non hesitant he was to stomp on his own version of sox, that was just soooo sad, even calling him a traitor 😢

    I can think of a few anime, for one character has a huge plan in mind that requires everything to fall into place perfectly,
    And they will kill anyone even friends family and loved ones because if they succeed in their plan it won’t matter.
    I think that’s the same thing with Zerge.
    Even if buzz or anyone else were to tell him that what he’s planning is not how time travel works, he wouldn’t want to listen, because it would mean all the ‘sacrifices’ he has made would be for nothing.

    My intake. For plot to make sense authors need to add two things. First before leaving Sox with work to figure out how to stabilize crystal Buzz needed to add “If authority tries to take you delete all memory about crystal” it will explain why future Sox cannot recreate the crystal. Second, when the crystal is in progress of printing add some sort of anomaly (glitch in a system, lighting strike that for a moment power down a machine anything random) and a line like “somehow this crystal even more durable than normal one and because of that it allows you to travel back in time”. So even if Sox can analyze crystal, without knowing what exactly cause the abnormality he cannot recreate it.

    I’d like to add that Zurg (Buzz). Is the exact representation of Who Buzz was. An Ego centric person who believe no one was competent but himself. This lead him to make careless mistakes that could have been avoided. Zerg believed that he was in the right. That he didn’t steal the first ship he only “borrowed” . He said it for the Future ship too” in his mind he was a good person trying to fix his wrong doing without thinking of anyone else. This Buzz was the same until the crew help him see that what he always needed was to truth on others for the plan to now fail. This lead him to be a different Buzz. pretty Much Zerg just was the old Buzz. He never had the change to change because he never met anything that help him! Sad story if you ask me!

    Well one thing I understand is that old buzz said that he went as far as he can in time. so if old buzz uses the crystal that powers the ship to go back in time and go back to the to the day he would have been arrested. I think that it would make sense that the crystal would have had lost power.

    All I can say is Zurg's plan would have worked as changing a timeline doesn't make a parallel universe like in the MCU but rather destroys the old one so the new one can exist.

      My intention is not to spoil or ruin the movie for people, but Lightyear has been available to watch for a month and half at this point. Now that it's out on Disney+, I think it's a fair time to begin discussing spoilers. That's my thought process though, but I'm willing to hear people out that think otherwise.

      @@IsaacCarlson Thank you for responding and I totally see your reasoning. But the caveat with that is a lot of people wait specifically for movies to come out on Disney+ and it only just came out yesterday and many people haven't been able to sit down and watch it yet. I meant no rudeness or for you to feel attacked in any way. I just was hoping that you could change the title of the video to not contain spoilers. The video is great by the way 😊

Could have at least put it like "why did xxxx become zurg?" or something. Discussing spoilers isn't an issue, but putting them visible in places where viewers can't choose to see it or not is wrong imo.

    I believe the alternate Buzz used parts from his XL-15 to build his time drive, since we don't see his ship in the film. It could be possible he dismantled his ship for parts to modify the Zurg Ship, as shown with I.V.A.N being wired into the Zurg Ship's Computer.
