New Brakes, New Carb, Same Old Troubles... | Bultaco Alpina 350

  • Wow, it's been far too long since I posted a video about the Bultaco -- it's almost a year since I bought it!
I'd intended to get a lot more done on this many months ago, but delays with DVLA registration (excuses) and various distractions such as having a perfectly functional BMW (more excuses) meant it sort of fell by the wayside.
With every minor improvement/fix I realised a few more things wanted tweaking, but all in all it's a solid bike. The original tank, which had been resprayed red and silver (originally blue), leaks horrendously, but I managed to get hold of a cheap non-leaking blue tank for now.
The brakes were completely hopeless, though I'm not sure they were ever great on these -- so new shoes fitted.
Finally, I bit the bullet and bought a new carb. The old Amal is quite worn, and rather than buy a new one I decided to actually pay less money for a carb with a better reputation -- either Mikuni or Dellorto. Mikunis are hard to get hold of lately, so the Italian carb won out.
Stay tuned for more updates, and an interesting surprise part find in the next Bultaco video!
    Cheers all,
    Alex

Great video! I have a alpina 350 as well. I’m rebuilding the engine right now. It’s been a painfully slow process. But I’m ready to ride it ! Keep up the good work, cheers!

The yellow wire is for the lights, the green is ground, it appears you have grounded the yellow wire at the coil and the ground wire you have inserted into the connector block. This is a problem. Another problem is that you are trying to run trail bikes on the street, this is dangerous on an Alpina because they are unstable at over 50 mph.

Thanks - I’d definitely connected yellow to lights and green to ground (through the block onto a dedicated ground wire bolted to the frame near the coil). A short while later I fitted an electronic ignition, but I think it just masked other problems the bike had such as aged crank seals. Appreciate the point about trail bikes on the street, but I doubt I ever got it too close to 50mph - it didn’t handle brilliantly on the street with the short wheelbase, but it’s ok just for getting between trails if you take it easy 👍
