I have been biking 46 years myself and remember being snowed in on the way home from a MAG demo in 1980. Coming home from Southampton to Frome, no money and ran out of traction in the snow and was recued by a farmer with some other folk and spent 2 days in a pub in Wyle before the snow cleared. I ended up missing 2 days work, those were the days.

Last time I rode in the snow was 1983, I worked as a Despatch Rider and got a job sort of on the way home from WC1 to Harrow, even on my light and nimble Honda RS250 it took over 2 hours. I don't ride in bad weather at all now, just too risky. V85 tucked up warm until April.
a journey i remember well .about 30 plus years was going to the Dragon Rally one time with my son , thick deep snow and camped in minus 11 degrees c . i didnt sleep at all as i was concerned for him and our water bottle froze solid by my feet .
I'm retired for 4 years and I have the chance of riding through Portugal and Spain during all seasons. To get snow we must search for it. However I keep my excelent Hein Gericke rain coat and trowsers from the 90's...with a few use.
Same for me, it must be well over forty years since I rode in snow. In those days it was a lighter bike than todays machines and I thought it was great broadsliding around corners, junctions and roundabouts. Not now thank you, my ability to bounce has been reduced with age! Enjoy retirement and your wine.
Happy retirement. I’m one of the silly sods who have done the winter riding nonsense. I had a break for a couple of years but I’ve winterised my Enfield Himalayan and continue the stupidity. The riding kit, even the cheapo stuff is eagues better than the old stuff and we don’t really get proper snow any more. Morinis were new and exotic when I started out, way beyond my financial means. I’ve always loved them but never owned one. I have old Brit bikes, old Guzzis, Indian Enfields and a Yamaha XJ 900 which I don’t ride,
Nothing wrong with a mix of bikes, I agree that when new Morinis were beyond the reach of many, Now they seem very good value so maybe its time for you to try one.
I beat you to retirement by 8months and believe me you are going to enjoy it. I don't have a lift (or a significant other) which is why I have a certain Benelli 250 scrambler in the living room with no cylinder head. Should be on the road again next week. On of the nice things about retirement is that you don't have to squeeze the maintenance into evenings and weekends. Just remember to develop a bad back before the gardening season starts!
I remember an epic 100 mile ride in 1974 in the snow on a Norton Atlas . Belstaff jkt and tousers [ Barbour was for rich kids ] , miner's wellies and an open face helmet . I had it all ; vibration , cold and pain . When it was over, my jacket and trousers were so stiff they stood up on their own .Those were the days . Another trip in the snow comes to mind ; 400 miles on a VStrom . Modern gear , heated jkt and trouser liners and heated gloves , waterproofed leather boots . These are the days , my friend , I hope they never end . [ Didn't somebody write a song about this ? ]
The difference is stunning and I am enjoying a much extended riding season which is wonderful, The song was Those Were The Days and as far as riding goes I am glad they ended and we have what we have now.

Count up how many days a year on our little island are below zero, or even below 3 (my limit) and snowy roads. Putting my bike away for months on end would be like locking the wine cabinet coz its too warm.
Thanks for frightening me lol Your tale of riding in the snow made me cast my mind back to the last time I rode in the snow and there it was lurking in the dark recesses of my brain. I was 17 and I was working in a garage at Great Witley in Worcestershire and it snowed during the afternoon and come clocking off time it was several inches deep and still snowing. I had to ride back home to Kidderminster, a journey of about 10 miles, at not much more than walking pace with both feet on the floor. That cured me of any desire to ever ride in poor weather ever again and I still live by that today, I don't mind the cold but ice, snow and rain are all avoided wherever possible.
I cant buy my own kit? An RST 3 season riding jacket can cost crazy $$'s!!! I can get lots of gear, accessories, etc.. w/ that kind of cash! Heck, im struggling to find, fit & purchase motorcycle pants @ much less than 1/2 the cost of a lined jacket!!! Welcome to retirement & I look forward to more content!
Firstly you Don't talk dribble Andy , you straight talk ,like it used to be before snowflakery arrived. Regarding riding in snow we only really did it if we had to, before we could afford a car, I now only go out riding in dry warm weather (old age bones 😄) my computer shows 259 views. retirement is great , don't know how I ever had time to go to work . I agree with you regarding not having enough time, heated grips and waistcoat with modern riding suit definitely extends the Autumn riding into early Winter.
I bought for my Breva Oxford heated grips for winter riding, next week i gonna install them. In the ‘old days’, how you keep your hands warm on your motorcycle ? looking forward to you’re next vids Andy. Enjoy you’re retirement and keep save 😉
Hi, and a happy retirement too. Wow, 50yrs made me think back. My last time in big snow was round about '74, on a Matchless 500 twin, Edinburgh to Shiel Bridge, April the 1st no less, blizzard through Glencoe. Return trip was epic and I remember clearly seeing a single tyre track disappearing into the white out chugging up and past the Cluanie Inn. Young and daft but loved the adventure. I thought those 3 1/2 Morinis were beautiful when I first saw them in the 70s, the 500 looked pure dead brilliant as well. Enjoying your videos and look forward to more, cheers man.
Mind you, it had a massive Avon fairing on the front which helped ... a bit. The only thing that made it stutter was the single carb swallowing the blowing snow. @@oldguyinshed1703
It was mine it was a race prepared XR3i that was part of my past career in motorsport. Others have asked about some of the pictures in my shed so I will probably have to talk about the past very soon

I think that with modern kit and much better tyres riding more towards winter is an option though I do draw the line at ice on the road.

I had a similar experience at the Elephant rally, I would not contemplate such a trip after that, it kind of cured me of winter camping for ever.

I never enjoyed the snow as I was always worried about being as hit by other as much as anything, and you are right we don't bounce like we used to.

a trail bike on deepish fresh snow is fun, on ice is not possible despite some riders thinking they have magic powers
