Growing up my parents took me to a pumpkin patch to pick out a pumpkin and then helped me carve it. Sometimes kids had pumpkin carving parties too. So I take it for granted that people know how to carve a pumpkin. I have never seen someone try to figure it out from scratch before and it’s fascinating.

@@BensWorx Most schools have an art activity during class where they either carve or (more often) paint pumpkins. It’s a pretty big cultural thing for our kids. You wouldn’t usually carve them by yourself as an adult, it’s a social thing.

If you get interested in carving pumpkins here are a few tips:
    1. Step one is cutting the lid. As many people have said it’s best to angle the cut so it rests solidly. You don’t have to do a circle either- I like a zig zag.
    2. Hollow it out using something scoopy like a big rounded spoon or ice cream scoop
    3. Roasted pumpkin seeds are like a tasty reward for finishing your pumpkin.
    4. They make carving kits with useful tools like thin serrated knives for detail work and chisels of various shapes.
    5. Remember there will be a light inside. You don’t always have to cut all of the way through to the other side. If you remove the orange skin from some areas and leave the yellow flesh, it will glow but more dimly than the areas you cut all of the way through. You can use this effect to add shading of various levels- the deeper you cut the brighter it will appear.
    6. Use toothpicks to attach pumpkin chunks like cat ears, eyebrows, or any 3d shape you want.
    7. If you want to use a real candle make sure there is a hole for the smoke to come out and oxygen to move through or it will burn out. Usually I just cut a notch out of the lid at the back.
    8. I should have put this first! Choose the right pumpkin. A fun shape and a variety that’s easier for carving. I don’t know if you have any farms that grow pumpkins (presumably in april or March in Australia?) but picking your own from a field is the best. We used to get apples and other fall produce in the same visit and it was a yummy time.
    9. Exacto knife + pumpkin = carving injuries.
If you get into it I’d love to see more videos!

That is a baking pumpkin, not a carving pumpkin. You cut in half, scoop out, bake till soft then use it to make a pumpkin pie. The pumpkin seeds are great for the dog. They are a super food and a natural defense against worms and parasites. I put them in all my pups food. No salt for the puppy. For you clean up the seeds, soak in saltwater overnight. Then season and bake until crunchy. I carve my pumpkins using a dremel.

@@BensWorxif you do pumpkin carving try to get ahold of one of the carving kits with the small plastic handled carving tools. They look small and don’t cost too much but they cut thru the pumpkin so much easier than most household knives. Way safer too. Also scraping the insides out until the walls are about .5-.75 inch then start carving the outsides. makes it a lot easier to scrape the insides out too.

They make pumpkin carving tools that are similar to push cut jigsaw blades for curve cutting that are stuck in a little file type handle. You hold them like a pencil and saw out your pattern. It goes quick and you can do intricate stuff. I’ve done pretty intricate carvings, like for a party once i carved in a jack danials label, i would even carve the back to project something on the wall behind the pumpkin. I haven’t done a really complex one in a few years but if that works maybe i would do one again. Thin sliced pumpkin dries out in like a day. I used to cover the cuts with petroleum jelly and when not on display plastic wrap to make it last for maybe 3 days.

We would cut then open for the kids and let them start cleaning them out. I use to take the pumpkin seeds and take all the stringy bits off and then pat them dry. Then use a tiny bit of oil and usually a seasoned spice and would mix it all together and roast them in the oven. Mmm so good. You two did a amazing job on this little guy. It looks like it is just growing in its first baby teeth. It's fitting for a baby pumpkin.

I was wondering if you had seen Nick’s video when I saw the title of this one. Wheeling the contraption outside was a good idea. Hell, moving the entire process outside was a good idea! Your dog is so cute!
Martha Stewart used a drill to carve pumpkins about twenty years ago, but she wasn’t trying to make a face. She had drawn a lantern design on the outside of different types of squash and was drilling the holes in the design. I remember thinking that she had finally lost her mind.

Pumpkin carving is definitely a family affair in Canada. In my family, we get a pumpkin for each of the kids, and they get to carve their own designs. And the parents do a bigger one.
He's adorable! Love the little toofers! I like watching the two of you working together.

Best way to spend HALLOWEEN night!! Watching you guys carve that pumpkin was just priceless! Thanks for all your content... you're fantastic!
Yes, BTW, in the States, we do have family pumpkin carving nights, and we roast & eat the seeds too!

I was so anxious when you were trying to carve out the mouth with a utility knife, I could hardly watch!😳 The drywall saw was definitely the better choice! Here in the US, lots of stores sell pumpkin carving kits that come with tools that are relatively safe for kids to use and patterns to make all kinds of fun, spooky designs. We actually have a big bin filled with our pumpkin carving tools and a huge binder of patterns! I like to cut out the bottom of the pumpkin instead of the top, it looks neater and it's much easier to put the candle in!

Here in the US you can buy a pumpkin carving kit that comes with a blade similar to a jigsaw blade and it’s great for the carving. You’re basically sawing through the pumpkin instead of trying to cut it. It’s way safer than trying to cut with a knife. Also, we call plasterboard or Sheetrock drywall here so that’s why that knife is called a drywall knife.

I love Halloween, but I haven't dressed up or handed out candy for years. When my kids were in school, and at one of my jobs, we would dress up. This will be the first Halloween where all 3 of us are in the same house (they insisted on having me move in with them due to my mobility issues. Both my kids are over 30 and single (never married, no kids).

I think others have covered this but thought I'd still have a go in case I tell you something new. That's the wrong kind of pumpkin, that one is for baking. Carving pumpkins are much bigger and less dense. If you thump them, it should sound hollow. That's because they have less seeds and guts, but a larger area for them.
You should remove the innards first, then carve. We always use a hole saw to cut a circle out (we cut ours on bottom, then you can set them on top of the light). And we use a blade drill to clean out the insides, the stringy parts will just wrap around it and pull right out. You will then only have a little bit left to clean out. A large metal serving spoon works great for getting the last of it cleaned out. Ive also seen someone use a garden trowel.
Then you should be able to carve it with a small serrated knife. They actually sell pumpkin carving kits for kids in the states that have plastic serrated tools to carve with. That's how easy it should be.
Lastly, the pumkin flesh is very good for your dog. Many homemade dogfood recipes include pumpkin puree. We sometimes roast a small pumpkin and give the cut up pieces to our dogs as treats. They love it. We have even cut it thin and dehydrated it for them, buts that's a lot if work.
The seeds are also great for the dog as well as you. Toasted pumpkin seeds are a tasty and nutritional snack. My favorite things to do with pumpkin seeds are to use in homemade granola or granola bars, in trail mix, or as a crunchy topping on a salad. 😋

Here in Kentucky I always cut the top out in the diagonal and that makes when you put the top back on, it sets into a pocket and won't slide around
