This is a Motormouth couple car review of the updated 2022 Volkswagen Jetta compact sedan. What’s New for 2022? The Jetta gets a refresh with one of the biggest changes being the adoption of the 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine found in the Taos compact SUV. It comes with a standard 6-speed manual or available 8-speed automatic transmission, 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, FWD only. There’s also new technology including a standard Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, new interior design elements, updated exterior styling with new front and rear bumpers, new colours and unique wheel designs for each trim.
The Jetta comes standard with a 6.5” touchscreen, available 8”, a Volkswagen Digital Cockpit with an 8” display, available 10.25”, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto,
a manual driver and passenger seat, heated cloth seats, heated leather steering wheel, LED headlights, LED taillights and 16” two-tone alloy wheels.
Other available features include, a sunroof, ambient lighting, a power driver’s seat, driver seat memory, wireless charger, ventilated front seats, leather seating surfaces, heated rear seats and an 8-speaker BeatsAudio system.
If you are looking for a sportier look, there’s a new Sport package for $1,400 CAD available on the mid-level Comfortline trim with exterior and interior touches like a sport bumper, blacked-out-grille, mirror caps and window trim plus dark 17” alloy wheels. It also has a sport suspension, an electronically locking front differential and drive selection mode with 4 different drive modes to choose from that deliver fun to drive handling and performance. The interior includes, a black headliner, leatherette sport seats and a sunroof. In the US, you get a new Sport model, which replaces the R-Line model with similar features.

I drove one the other day was shocked by how well it drove. So quiet, handles really well and so composed, was a manual and the shifts were sooo smooth. Great car for the money! Felt like driving a $40k car.

I’ve owned more German cars than Japanese. I prefer the more stoic and simplified design approach. Japanese cars tend to focus too much on build quality, efficiency and reliability. True… good things to focus on, but far too often it is at the cost of passion. The focus of German cars is simplified to putting the driver, and the driving experience at the forefront. My Wife drives a fully loaded Jetta Highline (with the Fender 9-speaker audio system) and absolutely loves it. The Jetta provides a non-flashy, comfortable and relaxing drive at a very respectable price … even fully loaded. Compared to the overstyled, weird ‘interiored’ (new word) and over-priced Honda Civic… the Jetta is clear winner (lest I mention the GLI). Thanks for the video.

German cars are all about quality, reliability and efficiency too, meaning to not waste any power in any of the elements, so the engine being efficient, brakes not wasting power, power steering etc.
All of this while keeping great design and driving dynamics.
For Japanese it’s too difficult and too much work to do it all, Germans manage to do best of all worlds easily.
Japanese manufacturers tend to not break down walls with mind blowing tech or styles even. Germaine have always been the forefront on new tech and even safety. Audi basically invented led running lights a decade ago. Before that, projector headlights, now they even have laser headlights. Japanese brands tend to follow trends after they’ve been around a bit and proven helpful etc. On the plus side for them, they get good reliability scores as they only use tech that works well. Vs brands that take risks with new tech
Plus, Japanese cars become quite dated because they last so long. A fine 25 year old California Camry with 250,000 miles is quiet, rides well and keeps on running, but doesnt have any UI doodads.
And if you buy one at age 25, you'll only get to buy one more in your life.

I watched this and went to a dealership to test drive one. Wow, it drives so nicely for such a low price point! On paper, the engine seems meh, but everything just clicks perfectly for this car and it's dynamic, powerful and comfortable at the same time. Plus, the interior looks wayyy nicer than older generations. All in all, a reliable and fun car with great value.
My first car was a Jetta and I just traded her in a month ago. She was 17, had zero problems with her along the way. 😊 I wanted an suv and to sit higher but would go back to the Jetta if we ever needed a smaller car again.

I had Wolfsburg Edition 1.8 Turbo Jetta purchased new in 2003. My car had very few issues. Had it for almost 11 years. Paint was still good, and got a good trade in toward my Honda Accord.

I bought and loved a new ’85 Jetta. Our basset hound slept on the shelf behind the rear seats. We were tailgated a lot, and eventually realized that people were getting close to see whether he was real.

I have this exact Jetta, same Color. Luxury trim. This car is perfect, in every way. It’s fast, picks up speed, good on gas!!! And affordable.

Nice review. I have the SE for about a month and just about 3K miles on it. The main selling point to me was the quietness of the cabin compared to competition which you highlighted several times in your review. Also regularly getting 45 mpg hwy driving, which is very impressive for a non-hybrid vehicle.
I have a SE too. Was curious driving at what speeds gives you 45mpg. With some less aggressive driving the best i could get was 38mpg with a slight descending grade.

Own a '19 Jetta R line. Great car, super economy during this fuel nonsense. Also fun to drive when in the mood!

I always have a soft spot for Jetta. My first European car was a Mk4 Jetta 2.0 GLS. It drives really well when it doesn't break down. It have the same kind of luxury ambience as many more expensive German sports sedans, or with the same kinds of expensive quality problems. For Mk4 generation, it looks like a "baby B5 A4" which my dad had that period of time.

Maybe 1 in 20 engines had some real issue, rest is solely owners fault in case of all German brands, not any different than Asian or American brands
vw has come a long way from mk4 days. these new mk7 cars are solid. night/day difference electronically/reliability.
All I see in front is a Ford Taurus: beurk! The rest of it looks great and I believe it would be a sacrilege not to go with the manual transmission. Great review, as always!
I like the analog climate controls with physical knobs. It's a safety issue for me, as drilling through menus on the touch screen takes eyes off the road more.

I rented 2021 1.4T for a long haul trip few days ago and I was able to get 17KM/L. This is probably one of the most fuel efficient vehicle in its class which has torque converter automatic.
such an uncommon measure of fuel efficiency (technically ok though). Do you live under a rock and never heard of L/100km or mpg?

I want to request from you guys to try to always mention where the vehicles you test come from or where are they assembled. Doing so, you gives credit to whom deserves it, and make sure information for the consumer is complete.
The two last cars you've tested, the Mustang Mach E Gt, and now the Jetta, are not only assembled in Mexico, but many of its parts come from there to. Knowing this let use appreciate the relationship between the origin of a vehicle and the quality we can expect.

It really doesn't matter. All depends on how seriously the company treats its customers.
Management/industry have developed quality management/assurance techniques a long time ago. All comes to one thing: is it better to put a better quality part that will last or put something that will last only to the end of warranty? And usually the choice is simple (from business point of view) - it's better to put a cheaper part (and make extra few cents of profit on it) and after warranty make extra profit one more time when customer will come to replace a faulty part. It's sad but bad behaviour in this case is rewarded at least twice.
The only way to fight with that is legislation and for instance obligating the industry to provide a mandatory long time warranties (for instance for 10 years) that would be respected yet.

Just got the 2022 Jetta SE as my 1st car & I love it! I was doubting my choice bc there's more "exciting" sedans, but my older sister has the 2022 Tiguan SE & the familiarity sold me. Wish the infotainment screen was bigger but no car is perfect. I'm also not the best at parking so I love that it's more narrow, while it still feels wide and spacious inside.

@@MaxDankOG yes! Honestly I don't know much about cars but I feel like it's very practical & it has many features that are very helpful. It's not a flashy or very luxurious feeling but the all digital dash, leatherette seats, & sunroof upgrade the experience. I would recommend the SE or SEL models for those last 2 features, if u want to add a little something to it for sun & to enjoy a little more. But yeah, it can be a little noisy when you leave things in the side doors & stuff & ppl who have driven it have told me that it accelerates a lot so it kind of gives a push? I was told it was like a bullet? Again, this is my 1st car so idk if all other cars do that as well. Finally, I love the app, it tell me when my car is uncooked, a door is opened, & where my car is parked. Also it keeps track of all the maintenance & stuff for u so u don't have to worry. Hope this helped, I tried my best!
I'm 45 yrs old and have always loved the Jetta since I was in High School.....Actually got to own a previous generation (2017) and really liked it. Haven't gotten to drive a current generation model yet tho...Unfortunately I need more cargo room for a wheel chair when taking my mom around...so I have been in the SUV camp for past two vehicles. As always, great video guys!

We have a 2014 Jetta SE - runs like new - 1.8T engine - has all the driving dynamics of an Audi A4 with a larger interior. My daughter has been driving it the last 3 years

So sorry to hear that the Passat has gone away. I’ve never been a big VW fan, but I can appreciate them. I always said that if I had to have a manual transmission vehicle though, it would be a Volkswagen. Their clutch action and gearbox is the best.

I had a 1996 Civic HX brand new. It disproved the old adage that you can get used to anything. I drove it for four years and still would occasionally kill it when taking off. My previous car was a 1982 Toyota Tercel 5 speed. I don’t believe that I ever killed it in fourteen years.
I see a 2024 Passat in upcoming vehicles reviews. Also, we had an Accord 6 cup which had an accident - looked around at all sorts of sedans and settled for a 2014 Jetta SE, less expensive than an Accord EXL of that year by about 7K
They are not. I have a Golf from 2017 (1.4 TSI) and it's manual 6 speed gearbox is a joke. They tried to adjust it properly for 3 or 4 times without success.
On the other hand I had before a 10-year-old Polo (1.4 TDI) with a 5-speed gearbox and it was great. Always check out before buying to not be disappointed. Generally, there is no such thing like "good brand". Brands sometimes have a good engine or two but usually not all. The same is with the gearboxes and the rest. Study, test drive and do not believe what reviewers say. The perception of a real buyer who's going to spend a lot of money is completely different than somebody's who only reviews.
I've always liked the Jetta
Got the 2022 Jetta Highline.. Love the car. Chose it over the civic touring because of road noise and tech and a cheaper price tag.
I love this car…just wish it came without a digital cockpit and big touch screens.
I think that the Jetta S w/Tech (DAS or whatever they call it that includes heated mirrors) package is the sweet spot for a young driver.

Even though I bought a CX-5 in September and not *immediately* in the market for another car, we are toying with replacing a used Elantra that isn't doing well. I thought VW was discontinuing the Jetta but I guess not! Drove one over the summer as a rental and I thought it was fine but not anything much better than the competition (but better than a Versa, which we also had as a rental and I HATED because the CVT is terrible). Thinking of getting a Nissan Leaf to replace the Elantra, maybe you could do a "affordable EV" comparison video? Thinking the Leaf because it would be great as a second car commuter car, because the base model with tax credits ($7500 federal and here in Massachusetts we can get a $2500 credit) could be as cheap as $18,000 which is great for an entry small new car and great for an EV, and I think better than the next cheapest, which would be better than Chevy Spark (discontinued), Hyundai Accent (avoiding the brand), and Mitsubishi Mirage (pretty bad).

Only in North America. Tons including golf sportwagen/ Alltrack/ and even a golf sportwagen R in Europe. Plus they still have Passat wagons there, and Audi A3 hatchbacks…. I’m very jealous of the European car market. I have a 17 Alltrack sel and think I’ll keep it for life.
Glad you mentioned the Golf wagon. I have one of the last made in Mexico in June 2019. Had to order it to get one. S model with no silly do-dads and a sweet 6 speed manual. Over 42,000 miles now and averages over 40 mpg on regular. Folks in Europe can still get plenty of wagons, including Golf, Passat & Arteon wagons. I'll bet a lot of frozen north folks wish they could still get a VW all-wheel drive wagon. Oh well, that's why Subaru is popular.

Torsion vs independent - many say that with a strong platform - for domestic use it very hard to tell. In the old days (I remember my dad's 82 Camaro, all hell broke lose when you went over a railroad track). Same for the rear vents - Hyundai says it's visual "feel" appeal only; and is wasted cost and WEIGHT penalty that is not needed (and Hyundai is always right .. annoying but right .. like some brother in laws can be). I said that the Jetta was my biggest surprise - Honda people what are you doing paying that much for a CVT - Jetta I was really looking to try to get it over Sentra, Corolla and Forte. It just cost too much (back then) .. Comfortline seemed more and more the way to go as the base was lagging in technology. Anyway .. I would look at the Jetta in an instant .. they got the pricing and packaging tighter now .. too late for me, but others sure better be looking to it.

My 2021 Jetta S is cool and sporty. I love this car. At 7777 miles so far, it’s been a fantastic car. 6-speed manual. Very desirable.

I love it.
The "Highline" in 2022 has every option that the "Execline" did in 2021
There is nothing cheap about this car at all in looks or how it drives .
Here's my notes after 12,000 km.
1.5 T
is a gem . All the motor you will ever need . It has enough power to put that smile on your face that only German cars can
To do that while achieving VW diesel type MPG is an engineering marvel
Why own a hybrid ? or an overpriced battery on wheels ?
8 sp Auto-
Is tuned perfectly.
The dual clutch is nice in 400hp + cars but also has a very expensive service required every 60-80k
This 8 speed shifts lightning quick and a DCT I believe would only make this car "clunky" . It wouldn't add anything
The TECH
Is first rate and I love the traditional buttons and dials for control
I always hated a big computer screen stuck on top of the dash like it was an afterthought so here I love the integrated screen
The internal ambient lighting is adjustable in colour schemes and is very elegant
Steering wheel size and placement is perfect. Seating position is perfect
Traditional style gear selector is an added bonus as a lot of cars have gone to overly complicated buttons to shift gears
Little things like the adaptive cruise . At the highest space setting you are safely well out of "Stone throw Zone" My last 3 vehicles with Adaptive cruise at the highest spacing setting, placed you perfectly behind other vehicles where thrown stones would crack your windshield
The solid rear axle -
96% of drivers would not know it had one if you didn't tell them.
My 2008 Mustang GT with solid axle would shake your dental fillings loose over lateral bumps.
This car is actually very smooth over bumps. VERY !
- Space-
I'm 6'2'' and 250 lbs muscular. This Jetta fits like a glove and I still have excess travel in the drivers seat
- This car is Much quieter inside than :
Mazda 3, Civic, Camry, Highlander, Rav4, Camry, Corolla, Acura TLX, Lexis is300, Hyundai everything including a big Palisade, Kia everything including the big Telluride
- My Jetta will run 4.5 L / 100 km on secondary roads all day and around 5.2 L/100km at highway speeds
- The seats are extremely comfortable. (Power memory drivers seat with lumbar) Heated and ventilated.
Small Critique points
- The headlights could be a little brighter on high beam
- The overhead console has VW's stupid "SOS Emergency call " system built into it and if you can figure out how to set it up through the required website you have to register on... You are a better man than me ..LOL and even though I am not registered on that system, every time I drive through an area with no cell coverage for X amount of the time , the system will trigger a warning chime, a Warning light, and this huge "SOS EMERGENCY " light on your dash . "Take your car to a dealer immediately "
It will startle you. ... And it means absolutely nothing.
And it only resets itself after you have shut down the car back in civilization for X amount time ?
The car also "Chimes" every freak'n time the temperature drops through 4 Degrees Celsius .
Its annoying and you can't deactivate it. I'm Canadian. I know when black ice can form. And it doesn't form every time the temperature drops below 4 dg C.
Over all . I truly don't think there is a better car out there in this price bracket and even higher .

I love the Jetta looks, I just don’t like cars without a fully independent rear suspension. New Sentras and Corollas drive much better with their independent rear suspensions.

A better deal than the Civic. In my area dealers want $3K over MSRP for the Civic, the Jetta can be bought for MSRP. Also the fuel economy is better in the Jetta and it has a normal automatic transmission not the crappy CVT like the Civic.
Looks like VW was finally forced to address the 2019 Jetta’s transmission grinding via class action settlement. Way to go VW….it still takes court action for VW to do the right thing…..from the case…..”According to the allegations VW calibrated the Aisin AWF8F35 8-speed automatic transmission’s software to engage higher gears at insufficient speeds and insufficient revolutions per minute. VW additionally programmed the torque converter to lock up at insufficient speeds and at insufficient RPMs. The torque converter was stressed by this programming”

I used to have a 2013 VW Jetta 2.5 SE. It definitely did not have this cars interior. Huge upgrade here.
I currently have a 2019 Jetta, I love the power and its very comfortable. There is way too much piano black.
A $22k manual might be a good deal. The question would be long-term reliability.
I am having a hard time figuring out how important multi-link rear suspension is. It seems you can have a comfortable and compliant ride without one. So how much value should you place on the superior suspension? I used to think that the lack of multi-link rear suspension was a deal breaker.
It used to be but car manufacturers like Volkswagen have figured out how to eliminate what is called axle hop, meaning the rear axle would bounce over bumps, that is now eliminated. And independent rear suspension will be better driving with more aggression but for everyday situations the new style of torsion beam rear end is just fine
Used as a commuter car made up of primarily highway driving, you won’t miss the multi link rear.
I got Multi-link in my base 2017 Civic 6MT and it's a very forgiving setup. It allows me to skip the rear-end out before the apex without putting the car into a spin. Very useful, when you don't have an LSD and want to get on the power early. On the transitions, I can go flat-out while others would have to baby it or lose the rear end. In the snow, the first thing I do is turn off the traction control, cars is too forgiving, it doesn't need it... Lots of reason for a well tuned multi-link setup on a base model...but, if you go slow and rely on the electronics, it'll do (but boring and depressing).
Independent rear suspension is important for cornering. No matter how well tuned a torsion beam is, you will still feel that the car is “pulling” laterally when cornering. An independent rear suspension lets the car feel tighter around cornering, you are more in control, as the suspension can handle the lateral momentum much better.
Think of your shoes, would you like to have them tied together using 1 shoelace or would you prefer your current setup? With your current setup; if one foot falls into a hole, the other one is free to keep you firmly planted on the ground. You are less likely to fall as a result. Pretty much the same principle with a car’s independent rear suspension
Torsion is more reliable and cheaper to fix

Thanks for the reviews Andrea and Zack. My last VW was a MKV GLI. I am sure this Jetta is decent, but it's far cry from VW's pre diesel gate. It's seems it doesn't matter what VW you buy there is always cost cutting...
Plenty of automotive manufacturers cut costs in some way or another.
At the risk of being contrarian, the following are the details I look for in a car:
- Dependable, inexpensive incandescent light bulbs throughout,
- Hard, durable plastic surfaces throughtout,
- Vinyl flooring (like in the F-150 electric truck)
- Stationwagon format or Hatchback format that is not 2K more than the sedan format
It seems car fashions are going the wrong way.
Not the wrong way, other people don’t want to drive a hazard of a car without xenons or at least some kind of LED lights.
Plenty of cars with hard plastics, I’ll take soft durable plastics thank you, or a leatherette/leather wrapped dash.
F150 is a work truck, so you can get some vans that have hatchbacks like transit or ram van, those should have vinyl flooring too.

As someone who currently drives a Civic, yes - I would pick the Jetta over the Civic.
The Civic's interior is better but the insulation is bad and very noisy. If you want a quiet drive, it is hard to find a better one than Jetta in this class.
I've been driving a Jetta rental for a month now. I think it runs on air. I'll get 4.6L/100K on the highway! holy smokes. And the suspension is great. I don't like the seats, not enough adjustment and it does lack power on the highway, when on cruise control is will not always keep up to set speed going up big hills.

Having driven multiple Jettas with both torsion beam rear suspension and independent rear suspension, you’re really gonna notice a difference when you’re loaded heavily and driving spiritedly through twisty hilly roads. On the highway, I would prefer the torsion beam, however in the twists you’ll wish for independent.

Nice VW has still kept some analog buttons from 2017 that integrate with the digital. Volume , Climate control and traction control buttons not buried in the menus.
15:40 I would posit that the Golf (and other true compact cars) have died is because of the US's perverse fuel economy regs, where cars are disadvantaged against light trucks of the same footprint size, and where the fuel economy standard in general is relaxed as the vehicle size goes up. This is why everything is an SUV now, it makes it easier for the manufacturers to hit their EPA corporate averages. Check the Wikipedia for Corporate Average Fuel Economy, for 41sq footprint or less the target is 50.21 for cars but only 40.29 for light trucks.

The only minuscule competitors in this class are the 3 and Corolla. All the other competitors are huge in this class.
@@JT-fq2bl - it’s got more rear legroom than a Civic which is pretty impressive. If you’re a family of 4 and need that space in the rear, this car is definitely worth a look.

Best spec in my humble opinion is the mid trim aka comfortline add the sports package for extra 1400cdn .. the wheels are better looking sports suspension etc the only thing I would want from highline would be the beats speakers .. if you considering the gli don’t for not much more you can get a golf r

biggest problem with the Comfortline is the vinyl seats. If I could get cloth seats I would get it. I no longer buy cars with leatherette or leather seats. I find them uncomfortable and the leather anyway takes a lot n=more maintenance than cloth. This really limits choice in all brands. I just don't get the desire for leather or fake leather.

Agree Zack, VW should just stick with Fender. And I'll never understand the masses... I'd take the Golf over Jetta, station wagon over SUV... Except I hate the MK8 Golf.

I tried the Taos .... it is no Golf or Golf Sportwagen that's for sure. I had several Golfs and tried the Taos and took a hard pass and switched to a different brand.

We just purchased a new Jetta and are quite pleased so far, we've owned Toyotas for last 20yrs and couldn't have been happier with them, but was looking for something different and we happened to see this little nugget and are surprised at the amenities and refinement of this car. Time will tell if it has the reliability of the Toyotas but so far it's a pleasant surprise. My only complaint thus far is the engine auto off feature, now you can turn this off but it goes off automatically when in cruise control and so I forget to turn it off many times......
Now after year what do u think about this car??
@dipin2 I'm still somewhat impressed, not happy with not being able to turn off traction control, can't get out of small snow drifts, otherwise it's a good car.

Re: Taos. When we vacationed there years ago a local shop owner told us it was pronounced like "house" with a T. Just one syllable.
As to the Jetta, exterior styling is somewhat bland, particularly in a world of Kia's and Hyundai's.
As an ex Hyundai owner, and now Vw owner, here’s what i come to find out. VWs don’t usually break the style awards with the vehicles. Hyundai has been trying to set trends with their looks. But with that said, look at a 2013 Elantra for example. People praised it for its looks when it came out. A Vw Jetta or golf, pretty mainstream. The difference looking at them both now? VWs don’t age like other brands. A 13 Elantra now looks so outdated and plasticy, where a Vw just looks good. Not setting trends but not aging at the same time.
From what I’ve seen VWs have always been rather conservative with styling; very minimalistic and sleek. Hyundai and Kia, used to be like this but their newer vehicles, to me are over-styled. Not everything has to look like a sports car.

Hi guys... really enjoy your reviews of all vehicles you test... however, could you spend some time talking about mechanical reliability of the vehicles you test drive? We know that most European vehicles are 'money pits" as they cost way too much to run and maintain and they tend to breakdown often. Parts are constantly breaking on them and reliability is questionable at best. They may look great but looks won't get you far when they have to sit in the mechanic's shop getting repaired. Past reliability is often a good indicator of future reliability as well. Thanks very much for all you do!
They would have to drive the vehicle long-term in order to speak for its reliability. They’re only test driving and speaking about their impressions.
