I remember in school getting IT classes not to reveal personal info and meet with randoms irl. I was 10 and this was pretty much common sense to me but they really need to modernise it for stuff like discord pedos and minecraft groomers.
Crazy how ubiquitous internet safety was back then, with how non-existent it currently is now.

@@shinjite06 its because its a lot more easy access to any app or program that gives way to talking to thousands in just a 1 minute. Older generations cant keep up with the technology and also know basic knowledge of protection and privacy. Younger generation knows mostly the new apps all the time and they just follow trends with hundreds of thousands of people. They don't understand the underlying technology or they just ignore it. Kids are too used to just casually talking to everyone on the internet.
I’ve always felt that the people who actually meet up with people they met online or revealed any info about themselves were idiots.

Crazy, alot of things in this video to me are just common knowledge or common sense in a way. We're at a weird point in internet history where we've doubled back and the younger generation are just as clueless and gullible on the internet as our parents first were when trying to teach them.
Most young people nowadays don't even know how a computer works, all they use are Ipads and Consoles, while we grew up on PC desktops.

It's prob because everything got simplified. When the internet was still in its infancy, people had to learn how to build a PC, navigate through websites, learning shit like not downloading random stuff or clicking on insecure links. Now, people have ready-to-be-consumed packages straight from the appstore that are so easy to use, looks legit, and appears safe that people aren't as wary anymore.

The stanford prison is not the best example. It has been found that the guards have been told by the researchers to be violent explicitly.
It’s also so overused bc it’s in every intro to psych class. It’s the go to for every abuse of power story like 1984 is the go to for surveillance.
I think the fact that they adhered to the instruction is damning enough evidence to not discredit the experiment in whole.
@@drearmouse9510 the guards believe that is what the researchers tell them to do and they are contributing to the research, the behaviour was mostly a result of demand characteristics, not a inherent "corruption" in people with power. There's just too much variables that the experiment has not considered, nor was it ethically done. Even though I agree with the sentiment, the experiment was questionable at best and should definitely not be an example for a video like this. Even if it was relevant, it just seems too outlandish and pretentious for me.

Seems way too dramatized for what is actually going on, but still some good info in the video. TLDR:
1. Discord stores your data, has access to everything you do, and probably does shady stuff with it. Not a shock. Lots of websites do this
2. Their "trust and safety" team is a way of exercising power over people, some people on it are (unshockingly) scumbag/degenerate Reddit moderator types, and dealing with illegal stuff is a secondary function of that team.
So what you should do:
1. Go in the Discord settings, and switch off the things where they store your data
2. Don't type things to other people or in Discord servers that you would be embarrassed about if you posted it in public
3. Don't put personally identifiable info in Discord
4. The stuff you input into Discord is not well encrypted, and anyone at Discord can read it, so simply just be careful.

Same applies for the rest of the GDPR articles, you can contact them and use any of the articles you want including access, erasure, limit the processing and objecting to the processing of your data.

Just to add a note related to 8:40 - GDPR.. Requesting account to be deleted is NOT the same as requesting for your data to be deleted. So if you want your full data deleted this is the correct process no matter what's the company. 1. Request account deletion > 2. Contact their support and request GDPR data to be deleted. Only then will your data actually be deleted. Additional note, this isn't the case with financial institutions. Even if you request that they delete your data, that won't happen as there are different laws and regulations related to money laundering etc, so they are actually required by law to keep your information for years

I remember as a teenager discord was my whole life but itbgot too toxic especially when people start trying to swat you or dox you. Thank god I live in a country where its almost impossible to swat someone through discord or some personal information.
I've seen and gone through so much graphic shit on discord. I deleted it 3 months ago and I plan on not going back. Getting doxx threats is about the worst feeling in the world. Has me on edge to this day.

are schools not teaching kids how to stay safe on the internet nowadays? I literally learned at a VERY young age just not to share anything personal online, and im not even that young, im 19, the internet was still somewhat small (compared to nowadays at least) when i learned this stuff.

But basically every platform stores your data and/or has backdoors if they want to read you messages. WhatsApp uses "end-to-end encryption" but they can still read you messages if they want to as they have built a backdoor into it.

Nah just allow for email verified deletion and put it on a countdown. That way if your discord is compromised, your email has to be too (by this point you're fucked for most things anyways) and even if they both are you have time to recover your accounts which most people do when hacked.

I’ve had my discord account banned for reporting cp servers I didn’t know that I would be banned for being in them and I didn’t know how else to report them then I heard from one of my friends that his friend went through something similar with grape on a discord server but he didn’t even know it was on the server and he said it’s pretty much pointless to try to get your account back they just respond with bland and unhelpful responses

I remember in the first year of discord's existence, I got invited into a furry server by a friend who told me to check it out because of how insane it was. They literally had channels of literal 10-14 years old's suggestively posing with just animal ear headbands ( not even fursuits.. ), and people just saying things like "damn that's sexy, give us more pics" and such, all while mods just let it keep going. I spoke out about it in a general channel in that server and an actual discord staff member who was in that server said it was allowed because cubs aren't against TOS. I said it was honestly not much worse than pedophilic behavior to speak like that about kids and guess what? I got instantly banned, not from the server, straight up permanent account ban.
