  • I just received my much anticipated Aglaonema Rotundum, a plant that I've been waiting to share with you for a while! I received the plant from a seller in Indonesia and am thrilled with it. I first noticed the plant on a forum, where users were discussing how similar its leaves were to the Calathea Ornata. Intrigued, my hunt for an Aglaonema began and I have no regrets. Hang out with me while I unbox this new plant, pot it, and go over some basic care tips. Also, I share a little bonus footage of my plant room, which is finally getting back into shape.

    I have this plant. My neighbor gave it to me months ago and I had no clue what it was until a few weeks ago. It’s struggling. I’m trying to keep it going because it’s so beautiful. I really don’t want to lose it. Yours is a much deeper green than mine and quite striking. Thanks so much for this informative video!

      Hi! Sorry my reply is so late--I've been having trouble with my comments not coming through. How is your plant doing now? I hope it's doing better. I am pretty sure I am going to lose the bottom leaf on mine, it's starting to yellow a bit, though it is finally growing a new one so I guess it is a replacement for now.

    This is my top wishlist plant. Mostly because I loved the look of the ornata, but was scared of it. But I actually think this aglaonema is more beautiful than the ornata! I might have to take the plunge this spring/summer when MN weather is less extreme. Lovely!! Thanks for sharing!

    I also got one in the last couple months. I got it from Etsy but lucked out and found a US seller. It is a gorgeous plant. if you fall down the rabbit hole of rare and interesting looking aglaonema you'll never come out. There's some really cool ones out there. 😁

      Oh, you are lucky! 😊 I think I will probably pick up some more aglaonema--I'm just really starting to learn about them and it's exciting to see just how big the aglaonema world is. I think my only concern is that while I've been able to control spider mites in my house better than ever this year--I worry about adding more plants that they love to drain. Have you had any trouble with spider mites on your aglaonemas?

    • @hollybeck605
      @hollybeck605 Před 4 lety

      @@AddyBeez So far no... but I haven't had them for very long. I have had spider mites on others. I recently just moved almost all of my plants outside so very curious what will happen with pests.

    The way you feel about calatheas is the way I feel about aglaonemas. I have two and they are effortless: any light is fine (maybe not direct sun); any water is fine; fertilized once a month and they came through the dry winter w/ no humidity issues. Literally, the humidity dropped to 7% for 3 weeks straight and the ags showed no damage. However, over the winter one got root rot - and I'm an under waterer. The root system is smaller so I think the pot was too big for it. I successfully saved a stem by water propagation and another by soil propagation. The second one also had root issues again from staying damp too long, so I would say watch your water. If you keep it consistently moist it will likely cause rot. Let it dry out and dry out well. Oh and a great channel for exotic ags is Po Ratana here on YT. He lives in Thailand and has videos of the unusual ags at Chatuchak market. Enjoy your new ag!!

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 4 lety

      Oh, Cheryl, then I feel honored to have found one! Thank you so much for the tips and I will certainly go through Po Ratana's videos. I am a little worried because I added the neem soil drench to it after watering and the surface is taking longer than I thought to dry out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and my eyes on it. The new leaf it arrived with is uncurling and the leaves aren't drooping, so I think it will be okay. Do you suggest a terracotta pot to keep the moisture levels a little more stable?

    • @FreeRangeDiva
      @FreeRangeDiva Před 4 lety

      @@AddyBeez Depends on how well-draining your soil is. Both mine were in nursery pots, but in hindsight, terracotta might have been better during the winter. I'll try it when I move my cuttings from water to soil. But if you see those stems start to droop, check the roots immediately!

      Never! I actually ordered another Ornata after making this video. I've been able to keep the spider mite infestation quite a bit more under control this year after doing some research and my Ornata was actually gorgeous and still putting out beautiful leaves even as the spider mites did their terrible work on it.

  • @jakeryker546
    @jakeryker546 Před 4 lety

    Yazz! I totally compared them to each other. I place them next to each other in the garden.
    But the difference is when you want a taller plant. The ornata grows waay taller here in the tropics. I've seen some 3-4 feet tall but they turn skinny and lose the stripes on the mature leaves. They also stop being compact and lush and look bald on the lower stems.
    Yes, they are ugly when they get older but are pretty in baby form with compact leaves.
    Also, the Aglo is easier to keep pretty and the leaves stay looking nice for longer too.

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 4 lety +1

      Oh, this is good to know! I am really taken with the algaonema and it's fun getting to learn another plant. Though, actually just ordered another Ornata. I know they look different as they get older and I hope this one lives long enough to lose its lines this time. I have a really bad spider mite issue in my region. Do you have any trouble with pests in your garden?

    • @jakeryker546
      @jakeryker546 Před 4 lety +1

      @@AddyBeez Here in the Philippines, the calatheas seem really resilient. I've had pests like spidermites and whiteflies on other plants like coleus or hibiscus but none on calatheas That also goes for the ones that people grow outside their homes near the streets or those in parks. Calatheas aren't too popular here because they're kind of common. But seeing channels like yours have convinced me to try and grow them indoors. I'll just cheat and take them outside on the yard when they are about to die 🤣

    I actually have an Aglaonema Chinese red and Calathea Rosy ordered online and the parcel was stuck for nearly a month! Thought both won't survive upon received it, surprisingly the Aglaonema survived and is a very tough plant! The calathea obvioiusly couldn't make it, but it has grown out new leaves ever since i removed all the dead leaves and repotted it!

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 4 lety +1

      Oh, that is good to know! 😊 I am really impressed by how tough aglaonemas seem to be. The more mature calathea whitestar that I got from Europe was in shipping for probably three weeks and while it survived--it is still recovering and I don't honestly know if it will ever fully recover. I don' t know if that was from the shipping process or from the shock of having its rhizomes scraped clean in the process of being prepared to ship. I'm glad that your Rosy is putting out new growth! While the calathea tissue that grows above soil seems quite fragile, their rhizomes seem to be able to make it back with enough patience and care. You must have done a really excellent job to get that new growth!

    • @AddyBeez
      @AddyBeez  Před 4 lety +2

      This is actually the first time I've ordered a plant from Indonesia! And it went so well. 😊 I've ordered plants from both Asia and Europe in the past--this is first time I got a healthy plant. I ordered it in mid-May, but the seller let me know that it wouldn't ship until the first week of June. It went to the shipping center on June 5 and arrived to me on June 12. It actually would have come on June 11, but the shipping company here didn't get it on a truck for some reason. Thankfully, it arrived prior to the weekend when the shipping company doesn't deliver. I can't the lie--the price was eye opening and I had to think about it for a while. However, I know a lot of the cost likely went into ensuring that shipping would be fast and the seller was really great to work with. No regrets! 😊

    Yes people always say how hard calathea ornata is but mine is doing great putting out giant leaves. It’s my prized plant lol. However ctenanthe which are supposedly easier are a nightmare for me. I had a ctenanthe lubbersiana that got gigantic that had scale that I couldn’t get rid of no matter what. It had so many cracks and crevices for the scale to hide in. I took some cuttings but decided to throw away the main plant. The scale spread to my other plants but I managed to save them.

      @AddyBeez  Před 4 lety +1

      It is always good to have a prized plant! 😊 And I am glad yours is doing so well. I think I am just still a little heartbroken about losing mine to spider mites. I've finally gotten them a bit more under control this year but I have a lot of regrets about the calathea that were lost so I do sympathize with the scale issue. I've never had a ctenanthe myself but I've been looking at them ever since I found out you can propagate them in water. I'm really glad you were able to save your other plants and hope the cuttings stay pest free!
