Newfoundland RV trip - Quebec ROUTE 389 (LABRADOR CITY to BAIE COMEAU)

  • Driving from labrador city, through Quebec to our home in Ontario. This stretch of highway was by far the worst out of our whole journey to and from Newfoundland. It was absolutely beautiful but in a motor home, the sound of the clanking gets intense after awhile. We did make some stops (baie st. paul) and explored a couple really cute Quebec towns which we did not video tape as we were kind of done vlogging by the end of it.
    This summer we are heading to the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. We will travel to BC through the United States and go home through Canada.

      It was freshly all paved when we did it last summer. They finished the last section 2 weeks before we drove it. It was in great shape.

    When we were there on the rote from Baie Commeau to Blanc Sablon, you could not get out and stretch as the Skitters, black flies, Deer flies and horse flies were waiting to welcome you for breakfast lunch or dinner or just a snack! July 2019. Virtually no traffic, cpl of black bears. Had a pop up camper and should have taken the tow behind camper. Took extra fuel. Didnt need it. 3/4 ton gmc diesel with 135 litre tank.

    Enjoy the sunshine coast!

She would like to tell you " Mr. K I really miss you a lot, I hope you will have a great time at your new school and I hope you and your family are having a great summer" From Faith

    Just looked on Plug Share and I see it’s not an EV friendly road ..yet. 😢 Chargers at Baie Comeau and one at Lab City with nothing in between. 😅

    Thanks for a great trip. Hope you all stay as happy as you have been. I wonder why the stretches of unpaved road. Could it be marshy/wetland areas, where paving might fall victim to excessive freezing/heaving in season, leaving a crumbling, even worse road.....

    I wonder if they will ever finish paving it

      Not likely its part of Quebec and they will not pay for it been like that forever sadly

    Nice and informative.
    Leaving in a couple of days, Montreal to Blanc Sablon in our 23" class B+.
    What would be your best advices on RV preparation?
    I installed extra rubber lining in the rear wheel wells, mudflaps in the front to prevent rocks from hitting the aluminum running boards, valves extensions in the rear tires to adjust tire pressure lower for dirt roads "confort". Protected some undercariage pipes from dages with flying rocks..
    Anything else you might think I should do?

      We are slowly making our videos from last summers trip where we drove across the northern states to the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. It’s hard making them while back at work but we hope to get them finished before our next trip 😊

    Here is the question… would you do it again or would you by pass this part on a cross Canada trip from Halifax…. We were thinking of going to Newfoundland then doing the same crossing you did

    • @MandMtravel83
      @MandMtravel83  Před 11 měsíci

      I would do it again for sure. Not Mitch to do but the scenery was worth it.

    At 3:54 in the video, it looks like the road was once paved and now they were tearing up the asphalt again?

      @MandMtravel83  Před rokem +2

      I think they are just fixing it up. I’m sure eventually the whole section will be paved just like the trans Labrador hwy

    Is that actually a purpose dirt road, or was it because of construction?? Maybe it's fine now?

    • @MandMtravel83
      @MandMtravel83  Před 8 měsíci +1

      No it’s the only road from Labrador city to baie comeau. And I doubt they’ll pave it anytime soon 😬

      QC Hwy 389 was opened in the early 60s for the construction of the Manic-Outardes hydro project in the 1960s, It initially went from Baie-Comeau to Manic 5, and was eventually paved. In the 60s and the 70s, two mining towns opened in northern Quebec: Gagnonville and Fermont, which were initially completely isolated, only accessible by train or by plane. In 1987 highway 389 was extended from Manic 5 to Fermont, via where Gagnonville used to be (Gagnonville shut down in 85 and the entire city was dismantled, two years before hwy 389 finally reached it. The Hart Jaune river, shown in the video, has a hydro dam a few miles upstream from the bridge shown in the video, this dam was built to feed Gagnonville and its mining operations, a few miles away. This dam is now part of Hydro Quebec). A large part of hwy 389 between Manic 5 and Fermont is still not paved to this day, although significant road work has been done over the last couple years (and it's still going on) to improve it. 389 was eventually linked to TLH hwy 500 to Labrador City, another mining town opened in the 60s.
      I wish they would pave the gravel part, it's often part of election promises but never gets done. Not enough people in Fermont complaining I guess, and they will not do it to please the NL government. It's like the completion of hwy 138 from Blanc Sablon to Kegaska: always promised, never delivered.

    Wow. do a little more reasearch before you take these trip and stay away from roads like the Alcan, Dempster Highwat and te Top of the world highway, Not for the meek.

    • @MandMtravel83
      @MandMtravel83  Před 5 měsíci

      We actually loved it. Only complaint is the way it makes the RV rattle on the dirt road section through Quebec. We were prepared for it cuz we researched it before hand. We knew what we were getting into. We’ve done the top of the world highway before for our honeymoon. Dempster will be in a few years.
