- Welcome back to Hunt Fish Shoot! Today we are back at on the range with another gun review! Today it's the Ruger American 450 Bushmaster! The ultimate hunting rifle for situations where bottleneck cartridges are not allowed such as Ohio Deer Hunting. Firearm season is just around the corner, so come check it out!
This Ruger American .450 Bushmaster is an awesome and affordable big bore hunting rifle! Here in Ohio we were able to pick this rifle up for under $700 which included a Leupold Freedom scope (and rings) specific to the .450 bushmaster cartridge. We chose to get the Go-Wild camo pattern with the bronze cerakote....and this thing looks sweet!
Here in Ohio we have limited options when it comes to whitetail deer hunting with rifles. The 450 bushmaster is one of the more popular bolt action rifle options and truthfully there is no better gun. Upgrading from a 12ga shotgun to a 450 bushmaster will give you more distance, a much flatter trajectory, and a tighter moa. For these reasons we highly recommend this Ruger American .450 Bushmaster! This rifle also makes for an awesome hog hunting rifle. The 450 Bushmaster deer hunting in Ohio is the way to go.
We shot 3 groups of Hornady American Whitetail out of this gun at 100yrds and was really impressed with the groupings. Now we did notice that it shoots a little high, but according to Hornady this is to be expected at 100yrds and could be adjusted but is perfect when you need to stretch out your effective distance.

I won one of these at a Whitetails Unlimited banquet. I sighted it in today (Leopold VX Freedom 3-9x40) at 100 yards. This gun shot nickel sized groups, every shot touched; shot three literally went through shot one’s hole. I’m thoroughly impressed with this gun and the Bushmaster .450 caliber.
They are great rifles! Probably one of the best deer rifles for the money, especially when you can get the rifle/optics combo like we did.
Ruger Go Wilds all do that...they just need the shooter to be as good as the rifle.
It’s a great shooting gun but ours doesn’t shoot better groups even off a lead sled. It’s shoots plenty well enough for deer hunting here in Ohio!
@@HuntFishShootChannel I've got one in 6.5 and 300wm, they both can touch 5 holes at 150yards. Insane for the price.
I’m sure! My Ruger American in 6.5 will do that! Great guns!
I put together one of these little rifles with a Magpul Hunter stock, replaced the factory rail with a better quality 0 MOA unit, replaced the bolt handle and added a Timney trigger. Right now I have a Sig Sauer 3-15 X 52mm Whiskey 5 optic but I change optics like some folks change socks. It's turned out to be a damn nice little package. I would definitely recommend replacing the junky Tupperware like stock. A proper stock makes all the difference.
I have the Ruger American with the 18 inch barrel shooting the 250 grain Hornady blacks. Also have the vortex diamond back 4-12x44. I shoot one inch groups at 100 all day. Definitely a tack driver. Managed to harvest 3 deer with it this year. Good luck during the extended gun season here in Ohio. Happy hunting.
Thank you! Same to you!
Same sight I got, how do you like it? I’m also in Ohio
I too am in Ohio. I bought the Savage 110 Scout, and put a Leupold VX•R Scout 1.5-5x33 in some Seekins Precision rings...shooting both the Custom and Black from Hornady in a 250 grain FTX...and I am getting MOA all day out of it. LOVE this round, love the effectiveness on big Ohio giants, and even if you find a frisky Sasquatch....I don’t think you have a lot to worry about. Great caliber, zero complaints from me....unless I am standing beside it when someone else shoots it....the muzzle brake is ridiculous! Just pray you have time to put your ears in/on before you have to shoot that deer! Great vid, good luck this year.
Thanks a lot Rick! Good luck to you as well! Gun season is fast approaching. I would love to shoot the savage 110 in 350 legend myself, they build a solid rifle. Awesome setup you have there with the VX-R and the Seekins PMR rings. Hornady is always a solid performer I use their SST sabot slugs in my shotgun and they shoot great. Good luck again and thanks again for watching!
Just purchased a Ruger American 450 Bushmaster like the one you just showcased & zeroed it w Hornady Black 250 gr FTX ammo-love it ; cant wait for bear season here in Maine
It’s a shooter! Good luck this season!
Just got mine couple weeks ago. Sorry if I insult someone! But I don’t think it has much kick!! Next, started sighting in, 1st shot @ 50 yards, right 5 down 2. Adjusted scope. 2nd shot, left 2 down 3/4. Moved to 100 yards then. 1st shot up 3 & center. Adjusted scope, next three shots are 1 & 1/4 group 2 high. Adjusted scope and had perfect bullseye group of two. Love it!!!! Shooting Hornady 250 grain Black Box. Hawke 3x9 scope with Burris signature series rings. Absolutely love the Hawke scopes, I have four of them. Warranty is no questions asked, but never had to use.
It doesn’t recoil that bad, but to say it’s better than a 12 gauge is debatable.
Glad you have it shooting great!
I bought the shorter version and used the hornady interlock 245 gr factory loads and got consistent 3/4" - 3 shot groups at 100 yds.
That’s awesome! Sounds like you have a shooter, we plan on trying a few other 450’s this year so stay tuned!
NW Ohio here. Picked up the same setup earlier this summer. Cant wait to put it to use this season.
Good luck this season!
You as well
Nice I got a 450 on Saturday for This gun season but we got lucky, kidron sports had a bergeera(I think that’s how to spell that) 450 with a heavy barrel they guaranteed sub moa an I got jus that when I sighted it in,have the Same scope as u on it
lol how are you going to advertise the custom scope turret cap and not actually zero it at 100 yds? If you dont zero at 100 yds that turret is pointless.
The rifle is zeroed appropriately. Even more so in fact the Leupold VX Freedom scope comes with an elevation dial that is calibrated specific to a 450 Bushmaster, not the particular cartridge being used here. It’s hardly the custom Or CDS dial Leupold offers with higher end models. The next fact is the dial had no more elevation to go down left in it, bottomed out therefor showing the turret is set for 200 yds from Leupold. Plus with this the scope, with this
Dial doesn’t take into consideration the twist rate, barrel length or elevation, all factors in the CDS dial in higher end Leupold scopes which works very well. So in summary you are seeing 4.5”-5” high at 100 yards to give a zero shot at 200 yards. Well described in the video and also with any rifle you shoot to zero the round or load not the scope. The round and ballistic calculator from Hornady calls for .’ 4.5” high at 100 and dead on at 200 yards. Hope this clears it up for you! Thank you for watching!
I really liked the rifle. The barrel finish is great for use.
We agree!
I just bought this same rifle , 22" !
Added to my legal arsenal of fire arms here in Michigan.
cabelas in Grandville.
no ammo available from them for this rifle, at time of purchase but other places carry it. federals
excellent looking rifle.
It's a great rifle. We have been seeing the ammo on the shelves around here, but it can get thin during hunting season.
I tried to get this gun at Cabelas in Grandville too but all they had was a ‘demo model’ that was all black and beat up. Went down the street in Jenison to a local mom and pop shop and they had this exact rifle (without the scope). Finally broke in the rifle this year during Early Antlerless Season. Cheers!
awesome! Glad you got one!
My g GoWild 450bm shoots 3/4 moa with handloads and the Hornady 245SP bullet. LilGun is Pyxi dust in that rifle. Love it.
Ohio here too btw.
Awesome!
I have the exact same with the Leupold scope. It’s an awesome rifle. I don’t mind the lightning safety because it’s on my Savage and Ruger precision so im use to it.
Great options!
My shoots moa at 100 yards!!! Love it!!!
I believe it! They shoot really well!
Just got my Ruger go wild 450 Bushmaster last week the mag is a bear to ge in and t out but getting better
Hope it’s shooting well for you! Thanks for watching!
Have the same gun in 350 legend. I highly recommend the timmney drop in trigger and set at 2.5 lbs
Question about the Timney with the Ruger tang safety, as I’m only familiar with Tunney’s in things like a Rem 700…does it have a built-in safety like the Rem 700 trigger does? Does the Timney replace the factory Ruger safety that sticks out of the stock? Thanks…I’m not a huge Ruger American fan, but I’ve been considering one in 450 BM and I’d definitely want the single stage Timney for it.
@@scotteger6271late reply. But check main spring change. I can get clean under 16oz on low setting for 12$!!
Awesome video! and that setup looks incredible...Love me a visit to the local Fin Feather Fur as well!!
They run some great deals on Rifle/Optics combos!
Hunt Fish Shoot it seems like it! Do you know if the combo you picked up was a special, or is this a pretty standard combo for them to offer? Love everything about it!
It was a special but they seem to run the sale/ special quite often. It’s heck of a deal!
Love visiting the fin!
@@HuntFishShootChannel I thought I would come back to this video and give thanks...I picked up this exact gun at the Fin in Rossford, Ohio a couple months ago, and dropped 3 deer this year up in the thumb of Michigan (all with the 450). I’m all tagged out now and the freezer is full (with my whitetail I harvested during the Wyoming bow season). Thanks for leading me on to this beast! I love it.
Sawesome gun I love mine can’t wait to drop some deer with it in New York
Good luck this fall!
I have the shorter model american ranch 450 which has by the looks less recoil more like a 20ga, way more maneuverable aswell lighter im sure
I would probably agree the 16inch model uses a tanker style brake instead of the Omni directional one found on this model so yours should do a much better job mitigating recoil! Thanks for watching!
Congrats on 300 subs. That gun will put you on your back if you aren't ready for it, haha.
Thanks man! Yeah that’s a fairly light gun and the ole 450 packs a decent punch lol
I don’t think the recoil is bad at all...I was shooting my 1100 12 guage....and the 450 is not bad at all. But I do have the Savage 110 scout, which is a little heavier than my Dads Ruger....I don’t think it is bad at all.
You might want to sew up your front rest. Every time you shoot, you loose some “stuffing”! LOL!!
Yeah.. lol
Same gun but with a vortex crossfire. Can stack em in the same hole at 100yds. Very impressed
It doesn’t matter which Ruger American rifle you have you can’t say anything negative about them. Easily the best value on the market and American made 🇺🇸
I have the same setup as you mentioned. They’re great for the money and I’m glad I got the longer barrel. 👍🏼
Great video, great rifle! Wish I could see you dial it in to bullseye @ 200 yds.
Check back in with us when we get closer to August and I’m sure we can run an update! Thank you for watching, be sure to subscribe if you haven’t done so already!
This is a great private land rifle. No tracking required if you know how to shoot.
It’s an awesome rifle for deer!
With the gun that far left at 100 it will greatly increase that at 150 and 200 thats nuts that ur happy with it I would personally bring it to the right till ur centered but hey if ur happy than ur happy
I understand your concern, There are several forums, blogs and articles that discuss windage. The only thing that effects windage at distance is human error and wind. Finally, only shooting it to group it, not the final sight in.
"We're shooting deer, not squirrels"
You take the fun out of everything, don't ya? Lol
😂😂😂
Great way to make squirrel purée
I think its a step in the right direction allowing ohio residents and midwest states to use straight walled rifle rounds for deer hunting. I never really had any interest in hunting due to the gun regulations, this year I might take my 450 bushmaster ar out deer hunting though.
It’s a big step in the right direction! I know it widely accepted and many hunters have switched from the 12 Ga. to the straight walled cartridge here in Ohio.
@@HuntFishShootChannel Ive heard 450 bushmaster referred to as the most popular deer round in ohio, so I bet a lot of hunters did switch to it from 12ga
that is my dream gun
Quit dreaming and buy one! You will enjoy it I’m sure!
I have the same gun chambered in 350 ledgend and can stack 3 bullets at 100 no problem have respect for the animal and sight the gun in like it should be
We actually respect animals so much we shoot them twice when we can! Check this link out czcams.com/video/wZyU6ZCtBpk/video.html
That didn't group that well, either. I am surprised at how accurate the CVA Cascade is. I'm not too sure about the stock design/recoil pad either, if it makes you grunt every time you shoot. The Cascade seems to kick less than a 20 ga. slug, and it doesn't have a brake - though it is threaded for a brake or suppressor if you choose to use one.
I can say with certainty this kicked hard then my semi auto 12ga with slugs. Also had to do with the shooting position. That CVA is a solid gun, a little hit for you is look at how similar the cascade is to rifles Bergara produces. We will have to shoot the cascade on this channel or the Bergara in 450!
@@HuntFishShootChannel I was also kind of slumped over a portable bench; shooting off a bag. I wasn't wearing a t-shirt last Saturday; however, the temp was around 15 degrees. If I can find your email, I'll send you a couple pictures.
Does this rifle come with a thread protector? i hate a head busting brake!
Yes in the box
Excellent! Thanks for the info 👍
I think the recoil is getting to you, these guns shoot better groups than what I'm seeing here, maybe it's the rifle though who knows?
Every one i have had shot 1.25 or better but could also be loose mounts?
How old are your Americans? Only reason I ask is, I had a couple like 4 years ago and they both shot accurately and fed well from their magazines. Last year I got a Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor. Worst rifle I’ve ever owned. It refused to feed from its magazine with the stated 4 round capacity, would intermittently feed if there was 3 in the mag. A lot of time when it started to feed it would jam the round before chambering. After getting a round in the accuracy wasn’t great…like 1.5-2” with a variety of ammo. My brother-in-law has the same rifle, maybe 4-5 years old, right after the predator came out, has none of those issues. I contacted Ruger and they reluctantly had me send it in…said it was fixed and it was returned…no difference. I think their quality control has slipped quite a bit since COVID.
Man, im glad I live in Texas. I had no idea these laws were a thing.
They sure are and they are dumb.
You’re lucky. I’m I Ohio and when I got my first deer I was using a 12ga single shot with a bb sight. I moved up to an 1100 after that but I’m ready to finally move onto a rifle.
Damn! The old 1100!!! We still own a couple them with smooth or rifles slug barrels
What sling is on that gun and what brand
Can’t Remember at this time but it’s either a butler creek or a quake claw
I have this exact gun with a Nikon Buckmaster 3x9 scope and i can touch holes at 200 and i have it sighted in at 1inch high at 100yrd so accuracy is possible so take this video with a grain of salt.
Glad you can “touch holes” at 200 yds. It’s very accurate indeed. Not quite sure what point you are attempting to make, because we think it’s accurate also!
I agree with the 22 inch now id like to see a fps comparison see how much ya loose with a 16 inch
You probably do lose a decent amount, but for deer hunting 200 or 250 yards and in. It doesn’t make much difference.
@@HuntFishShootChannel ive succesfully taken game at 375 yards with my ruger american go wild 450 bushmaster an my friend with his 16 barrel 450 bushmaster missed his as it dropped alot fast than he antisipated
The gun can hold a total of four rounds. One in the chamber , three in the magazine. Therefore, it is not a “legal” deer hunting firearm in Ohio.
It is a legal deer gun in Ohio. Brush up on your laws, or speak with a wildlife officer.
Im surprised you close your other eye so aggressive
That gun can shoot better than that try different loads
I can put 3 in the same hole at 100, usually 5, but sometimes I will put one out a bit. I am running the Savage 110 Scout with a Leupold VX•R Scout 1.5-5x33 with Seekins Precision rings, and Hornady custom or Black...250 grain FTX, and it is stupid accurate for what it is....I was told by several people the accuracy was not great, but I am having PHENOMENAL accuracy out of mine....
I have a Savage 110 Wolverine in 450 Bushmaster, and with Hornady Customs I can put 3 in the same hole at 100. Very happy with accuracy, not happy with blood trails. Going to try different bullets for 2021.
My go wild 450 with 300 grain federal non typical loads will put the in a inch or less
There’s no way I’d hunt deer with it that far off bullseye at 100yds. I had a Marlin 512 slug gun years ago that would consistently shoot a Bic lighter off a 55gal drum at 150yds. That’s the accuracy I want
That’s fair! But the gun isn’t sighted in for 100 yards, we were only shooting at 100 yards. Thank you for watching, be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already!
That rifle doesn't kick
Neither do mules, but here we are.
450 bushmaster does not kick
It doesn’t recoil? Or doesn’t kick? Not even a little bit…you must have one of them new fantasy blasters which are recoiless
You won't hunt my property if you think those groups are sufficient for deer hunting.
Thanks scooter my slug gun shoots 1.5” groups and it does a fine job. I’ll hunt our own properties and neighboring public land and leave yours be, have no fear.
Wrong comment on deer not squirrel....if you sight in for squirrel you won't loose any deer....poor attitude....gun groups were not impressive at all
Wrong comment on this video, it’s a figure of speech not meant to be taken literally. It’s not being sighted in for any particular animal. It’s being shot, sighted in and checked for the grouping. Not all rifles shoot sub MOA but 1.5 MOA out of a 450 bushmaster is acceptable. I still use a 12 gauge slug gun with rifled barrel to hunt deer and it shoots between 1.5” to 2” groups consistently. It’s acceptable and reliable.
If your shooting 5inches high at 100yrds how do you expect to make an ethical shot on a deer ... please sight this gun in lol what the Hell . can be a tac driver in under 6 shot sight in.
Pretty easy it’s called understanding your DOPE. My slug gun is zeroed at 150. I have “ethically” killed plenty of deer. This gun in particular isn’t ours, the hunter using it chose his zero. I have my choices also, like you thinking your opinion of “ethical zero” fits someone else’s hunt.
"doesn't gotta be a tack driver" but it can be a tack driver. mine is anyway. one ragged hole at 150 yds
Awesome!
