    16 Intelligence Jedi Guardian is actually criminally underrated. You get 4 skill points per level, which is huge for hitting a lot of various story and companion benchmarks throughout the game, but also lets you keep security maxed all game, and hits all the intelligence based conversation talking points.
    My build was: 13 Str (Put every available point into this as you level), 9 Dex (Valor makes this positive and you are going to wear Light Armor anyway), 16 Con (Becomes 18 for Max implants with Hanharr and HK companion affinity lines), 16 Int (explained above), 10 Wis and 10 Cha (with Dominate Mind you can push through a lot of checks, as well as points into persuasion which should be a given for an RPG. This also means you aren't suffering any adverse affects to your force power potential, but you won't be spam happy until late game. If you aren't going to go Guardian -> Master, pick up Force Regeneration EARLY since you have the feats to spare).
    You want any gear that can boost Str to do so (Implant, Gloves, Belt, Underlay, Crystals), and everything else into Wisdom where available (Armor, Crystals). Dual wield single sabers, prestige around level 20 Into Weapon Master/Marauder (marauder might be arguably better, even for a light side character since the Ferocity buff is really quite strong)

    I feel like Dex affecting your attack for lightsabers had to be a decision to allow players to make blaster builds for Taris. They knew 99.9% of us will use a lightsaber and only a lightsaber after we unlock it. So if strength was the only modifier that mattered for a saber, everyone would just use melee builds so as to not be completely obsolete.

  • @KittysInu
    @KittysInu Před rokem +1

    2:00 odd numbers for attributes at the start are 100% fine to do.
    For example, if you want to get strength to a 14 but the best you can do is 13, it makes more sense to make it 13.
    Sure, the 13th point doesnt get you a modifier point, but you still need to pass 13 to get to 14.
    If you leave your strength at 12, you're doubling the time its going to take to get to 14 since attribute points are only given one at a time over multiple levels.
    Really, theres no inherent benefit to it either way. It all depends on what attribute you need more points in at the start.
    A BETTER suggestion (you might say it, im not that far) is to never raise your starting attributes past 14. Paying 2+ attribute points is an absolute waste if you're trying to make a good build

    Important note about 2 weapons - in most cases it is far superior to use 2 weapons late game than 1 because of the crystals in the lightsabers. Double items means double crystals => double chance for special effects, double slots for stat-boosting crystals, etc.
    Double-sided lightsaber also doesn't compare for that reason.
    Same note about blasters. 2 Fully Upgraded pistols far outperform 1 fully upgraded repeater/rifle.

    • @masterjedi8072
      @masterjedi8072 Před 8 měsíci +3

      Not really. All bonus attacks made by Flurry, speed, or fury, are made by the main saber. So you're missing out on one attack made by a saber that's probably weaker so you can stick buffs on it. And instead gain +5 attack and +3 defense. That is a substantial jump of a flat +25% chance to hit. So while you lose a bit of damage you gain a massive jump in consistency. Plus, two fully upgraded lightsabers are massive component sinks that could go to making your allies stronger instead. You'll be powerful regardless, so it just makes sense to me to pick the feat that makes the early game much easier.

    • @HeyMakedonsky
      @HeyMakedonsky Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@masterjedi8072 Hm, this makes sense for some cases, especially for early-game and consular builds(handmaiden/mandalorian fights). Not for high-str melee or high-dex ranged soldier/scout/sentinel builds though. You get so much overflow of attack bonuses that you never really miss. Prefect example is Carth with pistols on Taris. He almost never misses even while using power blast.
      Still, in kotor 2 where there are str/wis/cha/defense boosting upgrades you probably should go for 2 sabers on main character regardless.
      Master speed + rapid fire is better with rifle/heavy than the pistols though.
      Never really felt lack of components, there's so much loot laying around it's never hard to get em. The only problem being acquiring enough stat to craft em.

    A small caveat, from what I remember in the original Xbox version of the first game, a double-bladed lightsaber doesn't require two handed fighting feat. In the original Xbox version that is, PC version still required the two handed feat. I don't know if the dueling feat effects it, but from what I remember it doesn't change double-bladed sabers either. So if you come across that version be sure to check the modifiers because of the max level being 20 and feats being few and far between once you become a Jedi.
    Edit: From what I remember personally in the Xbox version, once leveled to LvL 20 I basically never missed with a double bladed saber without having put any points into the two handed feat.

    HEY! Love the video. Just wanted to make some comments!
    In KOTOR II charisma also affects (at least) attack roll bonuses of your allies in your party! It’s really strong!
    Additionally, finesse lightsabers is useful if you’ve been using blasters before you get your lightsaber, and you’ll never really want a melee weapon, although you could argue that it’s a good idea to pick up finesse melee weapons because of the ranged attack penalty against melee opponents. Up to you.

    Great guide! I played both Kotor and Kotor 2 countless times in the past without knowing the difference between *attack* and *damage*, having very abstract idea about what a "saving throw" is, thinking of Critical Threat range as of bonus damage number and so on. Also something like 2d6 I would interpret as "two times six" (I was under impression that "d" is just a typo glitch for multiply sign "*"). That said, I played only Consular class every time in every game, so my main character didn't suffer too much from my ignorance. A couple years ago I started watching some DnD shows which brought a lot of insight on how things work. So I decided to replay Knights of the Old Republic with newly acquired knowledge and had a lot of fun.

    Nice video :) playing the game again because I was watching Boba Fett... One thing (beside the dex thing) where I think you're not entirely accurate (or at least not complete) is on the skill calculation. While technically there is a d20 component in there, as long as you're not in combat that is an automatic 20. Would be quite annoying otherwise if you had to try 7 times to open a door before finally rolling high enough. Only in combat it actually uses a d20.

    • @GamingYourOwnWay
      @GamingYourOwnWay  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks :). I would have to do some more investigation, but I'm pretty sure there is an active d20 mechanic in the game outside of combat for skills. It may depend on the difficulty level that's set in-game though. But there are definitely instances when you try to unlock a door or disarm a mine and it says "failed" one time then an attempt or two later you can succeed.

    On the original Xbox version dual bladed lightsaber did not receive the penalty. That has been corrected with the pc, Android, and iOS version so if you have an original Xbox and want to save yourself 3 feats. Use a dual bladed lightsaber. I know when I played it when it first came out. All my friends did this. I still loved the look of dual wielding lightsabers so I role played that anyway.

    Great tutorial, (as always): many thanks. Can I check my understanding of one aspect please? You explained that both wisdom and charisma affect force powers, but can I check if both affect it equally, or does wis affect some aspects of the force while cha affects others? In other words; if I pump up wis, (for example), and get a 4+ modifier for example, does that have the same affect on force use as a +4 in cha?

    • @GamingYourOwnWay
      @GamingYourOwnWay  Před 4 měsíci +1

      So, they both affect the save DC equally (how hard it is to save against your force powers) which is what you're saying, so that is correct. There are a couple of other differences, the biggest being that in KOTOR 2 CHA also reduces the penalty for using powers outside of your alignment.
      In general, WIS:
      Force power Difficulty Class
      Force Points per Jedi level
      Will save
      Awareness, Security and Treat Injury bonus
      Vitality healed by medpacs and Cure or Heal
      vs CHA:
      Force power Difficulty Class
      Force Points per Jedi level
      Persuade bonus
      Vitality healed by Cure or Heal

    I have seen conflicting explanations for saving throws when adding up the DC of the attacker. So is it DC + charisma + wisdom + Jedi level or scout level or total level? Or does your level even affect the defense class?
    Also, for the bondage crystal, which modifiers would you add to the DC?

    • @GamingYourOwnWay
      @GamingYourOwnWay  Před 4 lety

      You are correct, it's a base number + attacker level + wis modifier + cha modifier. I think most of them are 5 + attacker level + WIS + CHA. Bondar crystal has a difficulty class of just 10, nothing extra, it's resisted by will.

    • @mich4791
      @mich4791 Před 3 lety +1

      I think he's talking about why the blaster rifle doesn't impose the two-handed attack penalty. I think the underlying mechanical reason is that the attack penalty is meant to balance out the extra attack you get from two weapons, but a rifle still only gives one attack, so the attack penalty wouldn't be balancing anything out.

  • @FractionsofInfinity895

    If I want a skill based character with decent melee could I build scoundrel sentinel? I hear people say both the scoundrel class and the sentinel class are very weak on Kotor 1 reddit forums. Although I do want to try that type of build since it seems like it will be fun.

      I say go for it, it'll be kind of squishy, but it can still be fun! People on the forums are so fixed on min/maxing that they don't realize that there are ways to have fun in the game that aren't "Make the damage number appearing in the air as high as physically possible" haha

    • @GamingYourOwnWay

      I think this is the mod you're referring to, for KOTOR 2, it adds some of the lost content. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=485537937
      As for making it look prettier, there are a ton of mods on the steam workshop (which if you google the name, you can also find them on the web if you don't have the steam version of the game). The few I use are fixed lightsaber colors, effixian's zeison sha/jal shey reskins 2010, effixian's miner uniform - black and white, ebon hawk re-texture INTERIOR ONLY, TSL backdrop improvements. Those are only for KOTOR 2, I've never modded KOTOR 1.

      The_Lone_Gunmen thank you one last question, what would you recommend for soldier/guardian build in kotor 1 I’ve seen a lot of different ones and idk which one to take.

    • @GamingYourOwnWay
      @GamingYourOwnWay  Před 4 lety +2

      I mean, there's not really a 'right' answer to this, but the typical build would be high STR, DEX, CON, low everything else, with STR being the dominant attribute. You can make up for having low wisdom/charisma (with regard to saving against other force users) with force immunity, and the guardian really only needs master speed and force valor w/ power attack/flurry and they'll slice up everything. However, that's not necessarily how you have to play it, I know I usually have a STR and CHA based guardian so I can persuade, use some offensive force powers, just kind of change it up. Just do whatever you think sounds cool, and if you want to try something different, just do another run! :) I also made this awhile back, feel free to check it out. czcams.com/video/4C_tQl3MbE8/video.html

      I tried it once in KotOR2 several years ago, and I followed some guide. I remember it was Consular + Assassin/Watchman. Speed + Rapid shots, so a lot of numbers per round, it got especially strong after you got sneak attack being an assassin/watchman, which could easily be leveraged having reliable fear/stasis/stun of your choice thanks to the consular base. It was a really strong build and fun experience.
      Btw I'm a huge fan of the KotOR games, one of my all time favorites, played through them a lot of times (30+), and I never really understood the in depth combat mechanics. This video was spot on, an ultimate clarification to all that confusion. Thank you!
