- So in Resident Evil 3 Remake you may have noticed there was a nightmare difficulty mode, and this was also an unlockable difficulty modifier in Resident evil outbreak, but did you know it actually goes all the way back to the original Resident Evil 2?

And they called me crazy when I mentioned this difficulty existed! Haha I played this version back in 2002 when I was a child on my Dreamcast and it was the best of the best.
All zombie in Nightmare mode practically have same durability as zombie Brad that you can get Special Key from. Now, use that as a base and increase it with more harder and dangerous enemies. That's you're dealing with. I do believe your goal in Nightmare mode is trying to avoid enemy as you can instead of completely taking it down.
But, yeah, having headshot ability like Eagle 5.0 is really the best.
The source of all Nightmare difficulties started off with this OG Resident Evil 2,but it was on the Dreamcast. Who to think it came from that console. I guess we need to thank this one for bringing Nightmare mode for other future Resident Evil games.
Dreamcast was the shiznit
PC actually had it first since the Dreamcast is a port from the PC version. DC just renamed it to Nightmare but it's 100% the same difficulty as Arranged Hard on the PC version.
Is there a chance you can get this version on emulators as this is the only way I play at the moment because the cost of PC or laptops so really want to play this as I have struggled with it on emulators which feels just like I struggled when I was playing this when it first came out back in the day and I had to read magazines for tips on how to play this but I also used to play this in 2001 at my friend's house with no memory card and would play it while they smoked the sweet Mary Jane and I never as never really liked it but we used to love the jump scares and me struggling to try complete this with no deaths and I actually did it with a time of 1.57 and got a rocket launcher to which when you play the hell out of this and finally get a weak that ends your enemies with one blast it is a sight for sore eyes but actually gets really boring really quickly. And so it ends and don't pick up a pad for about nearly 20 years and the nostalgia that comes with this game is and. And the videos that ink ribbon puts up that show me there are still things to do with this game thanks for showing how big this game actually is
@@BiGBoYBLaZie_1Um what?
I'll never forget how cutting edge the Dreamcast felt when it first came out. Shame that it got overshadowed.
Code Veronica was amazing on it. It really felt like the next generation of Resident Evil.
Finally someone on CZcams who shines a light on this port, great video ! I strongly recommend anyone who want to play on Nightmare difficulty to start with Leon as it's BY FAR, way easier than Claire's scenario, he got the shotgun and magnum that can still decapitates ennemies and helps conserve ammo, Claire's Bow is useless, that leaves her only with the grenade launcher that is't reliable to kill zombies or dogs in 1 or even 2 hits, it's a mess, Claire scenario on Nightmare is brutal, don't be discouraged and start with Leon first, also quick tips : Lickers have an exploit to abuse in the game, just walk past them like usual until they start to be in a alert state, you'll see them raising up, stop moving right there and wait for the next animation trigger that let them return to their normal state, in this precise window of time when they go back to normal, you can walk again and then stop as soon as they get alerted again, rinse and repeat and you can avoid most encounters, using this slow method it's practically required in Nightmare.
Bow isn't useless it's good against dogs with the split arrow. Even against Zombie groups it can** be good but you have to stack your shots properly it would be a last resort against zombies.
Man Claire's weapons were PAINFUL on nightmare mode, ESPECIALLY B scenario. I found myself living off of Acid Rounds in the end
@@tg.tyrant2302_ Same here, which is funny when you compare to the first RE, Jill was the easy mode and Chris was the hard mode, it's the other way around for Claire and Leon
I remember beating Nightmare mode on PC back in the day. Learned something very well that'd make Piccolo proud....DODGE!!!!
"Little Green!
"Plant 42."
Yet another RE2 thing I didn't know. I guess I'll be giving this mode a go! Thanks Kai
I wish you good luck on that attempt dude.
Good luck 🍀 lol
From what i know, every version from the dualshock onward has two difficulty categories, original (USA) and arrange (Japan), you are basically choosing if you want to play the game as the vanilla usa release (no auto aim) or the vanilla japanese release (auto aim and more resources). However, the categories are inverted in the japanese releases so original has japanese difficulties and arrange has usa difficulties. This is important for the dreamcast release because for some reason all dreamcast releases are based on the japanese release (you can see it in the censored death scenes) so Nightmare dreamcast is basically PC Hard.
PC Arranged Hard is 100% the same as Dreamcast Arranged Hard
difference re2 pc arrange hard .. hard mod orginal ?
@@brayanandresrodriguezc.4588
PC Hard original (Same as Dreamcast Hard original)
A little bit harder than Normal difficulty. You get 3 ink ribbons on every pickup and a normal amount of ammo and zombies fall on their back after 3-5 shots. Enemies deal a little more damage.
PC Arranged Hard (Same as Dreamcast Arranged Nightmare)
A lot more difficult than Normal mode.
2 ink ribbons per pickup, less ammo every pickup, zombies almost never fall on their back but keep walking until their head explodes from 1-36 shots and enemies deal much more damage.
I had a dream just last night that I was playing RE 2 and just kept dying. It was super difficult and I just couldn't get past an area that I've played through, literally, hundreds of times since I was a kid.
I woke up and was so happy it was a dream, haha.
Not anymore:)
Not a dream, but a nightmare! And it's real...
yeah, I was always confused by my PS1 version having Arrange Game: Rookie. Wondered why there wasn't anything else. Seems PlayStation got the shaft on the dual shock release.
Shame, arranged on RE1 Director's Cut was really good.
I am NOT giving away anything. If you see something in the comments, it's spam DO NOT CLICK IT OR MSG THEM.
And drink some water.
thank you for making this video. i remember seeing a video comparison of the different versions of RE2 and nightmare mode was mentioned but nothing else was shown on it and it appears youtube has little to no content revolving this. You might of just gave the communities revolving around the game a new batch of content to explore. definitely sharing this with some of the communities.
love the obscure referance "boom, headshot" fps doug is my hero
All of the sounds while watching your play through brought back so many memories of the hours I spent with this game....
Another reason why the Dreamcast is the history's world's greatest gaming console known to all men
Dude, thanx alot for this review
I has an only one remark about Hard/Expert Mode. Enemies has x2 or sometimes 3 more agro range, Zombie now smell you from 3 to 5 steps and lickers smell you once you enter to the room and make a single step. In other modes you can dodge enemies casually like a boss, but not here.
Man that's actually cool as hell. I'd love to give it a try. They really need to pack everything together into one definitive version. Just a classic RE 1-Code Veronica bundle on Steam would probably net Capcom a hell of a lot of money.
I totally agree, but I personally can live without CV. It was the prototype for all the RE games that were downright dumb.
It would be really cool if Capcom released their old Resident Evil games on something like steam and gog, but until then i'll just pirate them...
i keep thinking to myself even after all this time. wouldent it be great if they did a re2 remake like re1's one.
Would love a Code Veronica re-release on Steam. Maybe GOG.
Would be pretty cool, just i hope it won't become a mess like a certain "definitive edition" of a certain game trilogy where you steal cars.
Just completed Nightmare difficulty on the Dreamcast with A rankings on both scenarios (Claire A/Leon B). I can confirm getting below 2.5 hours with an A ranking DOES NOT unlock the infinite R Launcher, Gat Gun, or SMG. What did unlock are Extreme Battle, 4th Survivor, Brad/Special Key, and a cool image showing the infinite ammo code.
I remember reading somewhere being expert means you can knife all zombies to death. tedius but doable. or if you shoot zombie in a certain part, leg or head, you can slow them down and just run pass them. Either way you are not suppose to kill all of them. You are to save all ammos for bosses.
RE: crit headshots, they were actually added in the dual shock version of RE2, chris' beretta pistol has a 2/19 chance of scoring a crit vs any enemy that isnt a boss. (it may trigger against bosses, but due to the crit working like a magnum hit, its hard to say if you critted against a boss or not) but crits work vs zombies, dogs, lickers, super lickers and ivys (hard to tell with ivys as they can shrug off magnum rounds)
and you can add chris' beretta pistol to the main game using the gameshark to play with it, if you add it with zero ammo, it becomes a direct upgrade to Claire's browning, but a sidegrade to the VP70, do you want higher damage at the cost of ammo? then take the vp70, do you want a chance to save ammo over the course of the game? take the beretta. with my own testing on a handgun only run, by the time i hit the lab i had run out of handgun rounds using the stocked vp70 vs having 37 rounds left using only the beretta.
Silly question but the RE 1 GameCube version, did that come before or also on the same console?
Do you mean in the Dual Shock version RE2?
@@cloudtx I meant dual shock version of RE2 my phone autocorrected it to PS2
Weren't critical shots already present in RE1? The silver Beretta i think.
@@livingbeing1113 I believe the chromed Beretta was featured in RE1's Dual Shock version.
Whoa something I did not know about RE2!
Thanks for another great RE2 video!
Thank you for still finding new things about RE2 for us.
There was a version of a portable Gameshark ( I think it's the version where it says "Video Game Enhancer" ) you could insert behind the ps1-brick console, and in it there were options to view Cgi cutscenes and hear the other cutscenes, besides other things. Unfortunately I don't have neither of these anymore.
Great video!! Didn"t know this difficulty
Kai I love all you video keep up the work.
My one and only issue with RE2 was that it was too easy. However, after playing Hard mode on the PC version, that issue is no longer void. I can only imagine what Nightmare mode is like...
Nightmare mode is also in the PC version. Just by a different name because the PC Arranged Hard is exactly the same. The DC version was made from the PC port and they propably decided to rename them because they were much more difficult than normal mode easy normal and hard.
This is so cool, thanks for your research man
I had no idea of this, thanks for the info
Amazing investigation skills, thanks, Kai!
WOW! Time to go up to the attic and dust of the dreamcast. Cheers Kai!
Ayy Kai is at it again, giving us obscure RE content 'cause no else would
I played this version back in the day on my Dreamcast. I believe is one of the best versions of the game
Way to pioneer this one Kai!
Pretty sure Leon's disc has a model viewer and FMV's related to his disc, and some differences regarding difficulty (iirc, had the Biohazard 2 Value Plus version), some items actually don't appear like the green herb found just outside the police station. Also the japanese version has the bonus modes unlocked from the start like Hunk and Tofu.
And yeah, the hardest difficulties just make enemies more damage sponges while giving less ammo, still kinda fun despite that.
Yup this is true, i can confirm too
I remember finding out about Nightmare mode probably about 10 years ago. I made sure the info on it was real and after I did, I went straight to ebay! and found a Dreamcast and RE2, RE3, and RECV and an HDMI converter for the Dreamcast because I HAD to play this. I spent about 250 bucks for everything but I NEEDED this. I played RE2 and it took me some time but eventually I did 100% it. No bullshit was it fucking hard! But oddly enough it made the game feel new again. Took me back to when I first played in 4th grade hahaha great times.
First time I completed RE2 was on the DC so it's always good to see content about it! I'm with you on all the different versions though Capcom REALLY needs to re-release this with everything from all the releases in one definitive package. Never mind the RE4 remake, RE8 DLC, or RE9. Give me that Capcom!
It crazy that this game gotten so many different ports but with so many different features in each of the consoles that been released. I am still amazed that RE2 came on the N64.
Wow great video Kai
Love ur RE content u are very entertaining to me ❤️
Leon has guaranteed way to shoot off heads with shotgun, so his scenario should be at least somewhat easier😁
Nightmare mode and all the other changes are also on PC. It's a 1:1 port to Dreamcast, including most of the mistakes like the "clean water" and other butchered blending effects. Nightmare mode on PC is not that obscure either, there have been runs for that mode for a loooong time, it's just not explicitly called "nightmare".
I played this game majorly on PC and I remember all of this. I was a bit disappointed with the lack of options in the PSX version when I played it years later. A shame, because getting the PC version to run in modern systems is an exercise in frustration. I don't know about the Dreamcast, but the PC version had a few cheat codes like infinite ammo or invincibility which made the whole thing a cakewalk, so I rarely used them (when I wanted to just relax a bit mowing down zombies and monsters). I can't remember if they worked in Nightmare, though. It's been literally decades since I played that version.
Really cool. Never heard of this and I’m a resident evil 2 fanatic.
9:29 The GameCom version is like the digital handhelds you play (Like Black and White Tetris). People said it's a gem in this year.
I forgot about this mode. 20 years ago, I couldnt do it and gave up. Since I still have my moded dreamcast, I'm gonna get the game online and try this.
I used to have the Dreamcast version! I only played it through once, Leon A on arrange and never did another playthrough. I didn't like it as much as 3 and just never picked it back up. I kind of wish I still had it.
i love how realistic this mode is
-Rotting zombified human still standing after 24 gun shots to the torso
-realism
Pick one
Brought PS1 discs when RE2V1st came out. Still got them n play occasionally but that's it. Never had the luxury of all the additional modes that came on later versions.
That Barry 'OMG' had me!
I grew up with the ps1 version of this game so I didn't know about a nightmare mode in dreamcast and PC so this is cool
i agree games were really hard before youtube omg i feel old
Omg I need to try this mode, I only have the n64 version. Thats what I grew up with
I knew there was an arrange mode on the GameCube version of the original RE2 but the only difficulty that was unlocked and that I could play was rookie mode. I had no idea that there was a nightmare and expert mode in the arrange difficulty.
great video ink ribbon
Nightmare mod was on the original PC port of RE2. Claire A was easily the hardest scenario, Stage 3/4 Birkin seemly required every acid round in the game and also Sherry's section felt like survival by RNG. Also Claire completely gets screwed by ammo pickup compared to Leon, 4 grenade rounds per pick up vs 6 magnum rounds per pick up (also Leon's shotgun and magnum still has guarantee critical on headshots.
Still managed to A rank all four scenarios. Good memories you've unlocked with this video.
I played and finished pretty much all RE games on all it's consoles variants, but this Nightmare mode, I never managed on my Dreamcast up to tis day ... (I always knew about this)
It takes way more skill than I have.
For those who don't know, at the Dreamcast version, those are the difficults:
Rookie
Easy
Normal
Hard
Expert
Nightmare
awesome I never played the DreamCast version of resi 2 always wondered if they added some special features to that one as they did with the N64 version and like you I always wished they added the critical hits , I'm just replaying the DS version of resi directors cut which in my opinion is the best version of the OG resi 1 it has all the features of the new resi games and runs a lot smoother , I cant help but wounder if we got a resi 2 DS version would they of had all the special features from every port of resi 2 into one game which would of been amazing.
3:42 24 bullets just to take down one zombie? That's nuts!
I would like to say I'm a proud owner of the Dreamcast and Resident Evil 2 for the Dreamcast, I say this because the game is quite hard to find for the console at a fair price, that game is expensive! The N64 port is easily the cheaper product in price, I can get it for $10. But the Dreamcast version of the game costed me more than the Dreamcast itself, and it was on a price drop. Let that sink in :p
The Dreamcast version is the ultimate version! I own it, but never noticed the Nightmare mode.....might give it a go.
“I got a C rank and that was me really really trying my best” - me going through life
1:21OG RE2, the real thing for PS1, didn't have two difficulty categories: "arrange" was introduced in later ports (I think it might've been first used in the PC version, along with the Battle Mode). RE2 on PS1 only had easy and normal difficulties.
Re 2 Dual shock for ps1 also had arranged, but just the rookie mode
@@Viichan777 Dual Shock is a later version anyway - it wasn't even released here in Europe.
@@thermonuclearcollider4418 wow Europe didn't get that version? That's a shame as it added the super fun extreme battle mode
Would legit LOVE a "Ultimate resident evil 2" using the HD pc versions upgrades with ALL the features of every version :)
I am pretty sure nightmare mode is not where the critical RNG system was introduced. Back in dual shock ver. of PS1, if one choose to manual aim (options under the select menu) instead of auto, there are chance for critical hit, it is just nightmare difficulty that disables auto mode all together, forcing player to aim manually.
Is this for real? I know I saw it on Resident Evil: Directors Cut on the Arrange mode but had never heard of it on Resident Evil 2. It would be crazy if it's true. Has anyone else heard of this or seen it themselves?
I decided to check this out for myself. I played through the Claire 1st and Leon 2nd scenarios on Normal mode, with Manual Aim on, with the Dual Shock Version on the PlayStation 3 from the PlayStation store. I killed roughly 65 zombies with pistols and I made sure to not count zombies that were crawling on the ground. I didn't get any critical head shots. Either I had insanely bad luck, or this is NOT true.
@@xTJC1988x OK i tested it out myself and Leon's VP70 does not do crit hit in manual aiming, sound like I could be wrong, but Chris's 92FS (in extreme battle mode) does crit hit.
@@ingramli7733 With Chris' 92FS was that with Auto or Manual aim?
good vid dude
I'm sure i have the most info about the Nightmare mode and i'm happy to add to this.
The DC version was made from the PC version and the DC Arranged Nightmare is 100% the same as PC Arranged Hard.
I have tested counting killing 100 zombies in both versions to see how many bullets it takes per zombie and DC Nightmare took 12.5 bullets per zombie and PC Arranged Hard took 12.3 bullets per zombie so they are exactly the same.
About 90% of zombies die only from critical headshots and can take anywhere between 1-36 bullets but 12.5 on average. I like it because it gives even a lone zombie a chance to make it across the room to bite you because most zombies won't fall down.
About 10% of zombies will fall at 19th hit and will take 2 more to kill.
The most undocumented feature about the Nightmare and PC Arranged Hard mode is that there are some hidden items throughout the game. If you are familiar with the normal mode item placement and notice that items are missing, many times it's around the area but hidden. Not in the same location but somewhere near by and they are literally invisible.
The Leon scenario is much easier because Leon can use the shotgun to one shot zombies and if you find the shotgun add on that will drop livkers quickly and there's plenty of magnum ammo. Claire can't one shot any zombies but the cross bow will make zombies fall down so you can get past them.
The hardest scenario is Claire B because it'a a harder campaign plus the additional boss.
It's not an impossible difficulty. Most of the difficulty is in the beginning of the game where you have little ammo and the rest of the challenge is to reserve ammo.
This mode is basically for those who know the normal layout well, so you know what zombies you don't have ammo for and where you can get bitten on purpose to get past a part because even though zombies can take up to 36 bullets of damage you can still get bitten 4 times before having to take a herb so with ine herb you can get past like 12 zombies at some parts. For the most part you will have ammo to kill everyone.
Especially on B campaigns ammo can be low at the end of the game so be aware of that.
Don't buy into the hype that it's too difficult to play because you will adapt and find new extiting ways to get through the game and the third playthrough is already pretty easy.
You can even start any of the 4 campaigns by getting the special key and it won't be too difficult and Claire actually benefits from the extra weapon she gets.
Finally a tip for Brad for getting the special key. It's worth using a save right before going to the alleyway (note that you have to activate Brad first by not picking up any items and then you can go back to pick up the ink ribbons and come back to Brad) because you can stab Brad from far away and bait him to lunge at your feet and then you can just stomp his head and get the key without using a single bullet. You just have to stay far enough and nead the end of the passage be in one side so you can get past him and start walking him the other way throwing a knife stab at his knees once in a while.
This is going to be interesting!
Sega Dreamcast version of re2 was the best to me, them zombies really come at you crazy, I'll definitely buy this game again.
I didn't even know Resident Evil 2 was on the Dreamcast! I know about the Nintendo 64 version because I owned it.

Strangely, I grew up on the Dreamcast version of RE2. That was my first experience with it, and I still my copies.
I knew about this Nightmare difficulty bc in the late 2000s I downloaded the Sourcenext version of Resident Evil 2, and my God it is really difficult, even with the KONAMI code.
my favorite game off all time
Re4 Nightmare mode? What parameters would YOU input? I wanna hear you guys' suggestions. I'll start, Merchant is only available before and after BOSS battles, Sub Bosses don't count. Whos' got another one lets keep it going up to maybe 10 hardcore parameters. Hm another could be, Ammo sold to Merchant will be about 1 to 5 pesetas, randomly generated.
Very nice, didn't know this mode existed
I think the dreamcast version may be one of my favorites
There is still so much to find out🤯that’s me rn
Woah this is so cool
We need a remake akin to Resident Evil 1's NGC version but with all content from each version of RE2 (and new content).
I played Nightmare mode on RE2 Director’s cut for PS. Always a good time!
I used to own the gamecom version of Resi 2.
It's the definitive version of Resi 2 you've been looking for :)
Nothing like a video from IR to spice up my lunch!
I’ll gladly pat my back for the first time I beat nightmare on my bday this year and holy shit the name definitely fits

welp, thanks for another info on RE2 that i didn’t know about…
Man, I really wish the GC version had gone with this port instead of the regular OG one. Would have made the extra stuff totally worth it.
oof. you know. i'd probably feel about this like i did with 4th survivor. as in "i don't care about my rank! just getting through this is reward enough!"
I beat "Leon A" in Nightmare Mode on Sega Dreamcast. I will not do that again.
Congrats, What grade and time did you get?

You should consider adding "RE2 Nightmare Difficulty" somewhere in your video title that way it's easy for people to find, since there's little to no information about it online.
clocks the game on the hardest difficulty just to make a 10min video. WOW thats dedication
want to know something more insane Capcom has Claire using the colt s.a.a with 9mm...... im dead
(for those who aren't into guns single action army revolvers never used 9mm,they were chambered in 45LC or 44LC)
There’s the a Japanese only released called Sourcenext version and has English patch downloadable, but it’s called Hard difficulty instead
When I was in elementary school i used to best Kingdom heart 1 just to hear the song. We didn't have CZcams videos of that shit back in the day haha 😂
Why they never added this into the 2003 RE2 Gamecube version is beyond me. It's almost perfect just missing Nightmare
I wonder if someone can beat Nightmare difficulty, knife only & no save
