  • Is Hell Divers 2 good? Yes
    Should you buy Hell Divers 2? I think so.
    Does Hell Divers 2 need a balance and content update already? Surprisingly yes.
    This is just a quick little video on whether or not you should buy the game with a few treats at the end in my usual style. I'll be working on a few build guides for the game but lets be honest, this ain't that complicated (yet) so I'll keep those short too.

    I'm glad more people are starting to talk about balancing. Game is undoubtably great but after 70ish hours my Friends and I, who all have come from darktide, are already fed up of the top difficulty 'meta'. Most weapons feel pretty shit in general and outright don't do what they say on their cards, such as the Dominator supposedly being medium AP but bouncing off of just about every medium armoured enemy. Heavy armour is still literally useless as well and we're still waiting on vehicles. Praying for 'Space marine' playstyle buff asap.

      Dude the dominator is actually incredible, there are only 4 enemies it doesn't completely rinse and it's hulks, tanks, titans and chargers, and it even does pretty solid against their weakspots. The rest of the enemies you can pen the armor on no problem (scout striders you need to shoot at the penis from the front rather than the upper shield). The breaker on the other hand is good because it has volume of fire and the spread means it can hit the gaps in armor on the tougher bugs and the weakspot heads on things like devastators, but it's also good at mulching weak enemies, which the dominator is specifically unhelpful for given how clunky it is to wave around. It's basically a tiny autocannon as compared to the breaker being a much better version of the liberator.

      I strongly feel this game will benefit from a balance pass. Like why would I take the MG over the Stalwart? I certainly wouldn't against bugs and both blow against bots. Dominator can be fussy about trajectory angles but does pen medium in my experience.

      @@Reginald-sc9tk I played a lot of mechwarrior so the weird gyroscopic aiming lag between where you're looking vs where the gun is pointing has been hardwired into my brain at this point - the gun starts pointed at the left so run right and meet it in the middle. I disagree with the no-nerfs ever idea but I think the Jar-5 dominator would feel better with maybe 3-5 more rounds in a clip. Also at bare minimum the breaker and railgun should have the same shitty handling of the dominator. Railgun needs either less ammo, a backpack, or less charitable timing on unsafe mode, you can currently release a full charge shot from unloaded to full power in like 2 seconds, and the overcharge gives you so long vs the charge it takes to actually pop off. Also swap the cooldown for the bubble shield and the jetpack, the jetpack cooldown is unconscionable.

    Great video!
    it does sort of feel like HD2 is in secret early access a little as far as not having all the tools and toys in the game yet. I think in 3-6 months this is going to be a very different experience with respect to tactics and equipment. I personally can't wait for vehicles. Looking forward to the first balance pass as well.
    The best thing about HD2 is it's accessibility, finally have a game I can play with family and friends with (as none of them would come anywhere near DT).
    It's cool to have a group and all plan on what we are going to bring and try and work together as a team, very satisfying experience. I love the really contested extractions!

      HD2 is just a simple and fun game with simple progression and I appreciate that about it as well. I will say the gunplay, in some ways, is actually worse than a classic shooter which does give DT an advantage. But I think the melee combat is hard for a lot of people in DT despite being the best part.
      I agree, from the leaks I have been seeing HD2 is going to shape up well and you can feel it when you play the game that there is this solid framework underneath that is begging for more content.

      Snuck through 6 compounds on a level 9. Was awesome. Even did a melee takedown. But yeah, I want more

    Agree with all your points, as soon as you unlock breaker/personal shield/railgun, your build choices are immediately pigeon holed if you're performance focused. One thing that I am noticing is the core progression loop shallows out extremely quickly.
    Early on, you are working towards levels to unlock stratagems, cash to buy them, medals to continue progressing the medal tree, and on top of that samples to get the modules. It feels good, you're getting so many different facets of progress from each mission. Once you have all the stratagems you want unlocked, money loses all its use cases, medals are basically irrelevant, samples are just win-more, and levels provide no benefit.
    Really seems like they didn't spend much time crafting any late game experience what so ever in its current form. I'd love to see ways to turn money and medals into samples, or just any alternate use cases for some of these things that so quickly become useless.

      I'm fully with you. Fortunately the game is still pretty new and it looks like there's plenty of stuff coming our way. Also after everyone stops farming for a minute we may see some fun develop around the actual campaigns.

      I think that "irrelevancy" part is the reason for the ressource caps they implemented. They want to release a new warbond every month (every second tuesday of a month I believe) and also bring new mechs/vehicles, stratagems and such in bitesized updates iirc. So you can take breaks and come back to grind out something new instead of always feeling urged to play until you're sick of it or being able to buy everything new and shiny as soon as it's released.
      If we take Warframe for example, you either have 1000x the ressources you need for newly released stuff, or new toys come out with their own farmable ressources rendering everything you have left over kinda useless. Having the ability to pre-farm a bit, knowing that the ressources will be worth something even in the future, but still having caps to urge you to take breaks seem aight to me.

    Yeah I’m happy I found this channel to watch content for this game, you as a CC check the marks for a good CC. The crudely drawn schematic made me smile, update that just a smidge by animating the drawings like announcers used to in older football games. But keep them hand drawn. Also it’s good that even though the vid was long, you’re not coming across as annoying at all, many other CC’s are… really annoying. Good stuff dude 💪

    i haven’t played a lot of games for the past 12 yrs except league for a while in there..
    don’t have the refined palate u have and i’m also only 20 hrs in,,
    but been loving this fkn game lmao it’s so good !
    loved this - came here from the farmer roleplay vid which is a masterpiece

      I am very pleased with the game and while the content drop was not incredible it was timely and I love that. I expect more and cool changes going forwards.

    Stealth is very possible and the game doesn't talk about it at all so there's stuff to figure out. Some specific items can add to it's use like the stamina booster and lightweight armor that makes you harder to spot. Friends and I use stealth a lot in the higher difficulties for easier super rare sample extraction. I've stayed prone as a 20 enemy patrol with a Hulk and several walkers passed me by just 10 feet away. You can break aggro when you think enemies spot you by simply dropped prone and staying still. I've been showing the the ways by channeling my inner Solid Snake.
    Completely different combat approach but I've been loving the ballistic shield as well. Defender SMG on semi-auto works well and you can crouch and hunker down to fight stuff head on you might usually avoid. Shield bot, for example. Just block its fire and two-tap it in the face. When it's on your back and not being used it'll block shots coming from the rear.

      The issue is that there aren't other mechanics that synergize with stealth movement - there aren't any stealth guns or strategems - pulling out a strat ball alone aggros enemies around you and I think the same is true of grenades, even popping a smoke grenade will draw enemy attention to you specifically. Clearly the basic mechanics of it are there and are really important for picking your fights in high level play, but again there isn't any way to do anything without drawing the aggro other than move intelligently and hide, and try to snipe people calling for backup. And while that's important to do, it makes it hard when you approach a POI and want to raid it commando style, you kind of just have to hope there's only a handful of guys that you can take out quickly and no patrols nearby - I just want to be able to sneak up prone style and pick off enemies and I can only kind of half do that.
      That said I don't even think stealth needs to be a part of the game but it clearly is, and if it's going to be as important as it seems like it is now, i'd like more tools.

      @@jrockoclock7088Yeah, it's like half the recipe. Maybe they can add weapon mods that let us change up how we use our loadouts and add some kind of grenade alternatives like stuns emp stun grenades or lures. I'd love stealth take downs and suppressed weapons as well. Def not trying to change how everyone experiences the game just to expand on what they have as a base there.
      Side note but I've noticed while stealthing a base with a friend, head shot kills don't seem to always alert nearby bots... though that could have been the AI being being unsure who to target.

    In lieu of a full rebalance, at the very least I'd like mission intel to be more accurate and have less difficulty creep based on level. Maybe some kit gets relegated to 4 and under and that can be fine if that's the game you want to play, but then when you throw something it absolutely cannot cope with out of the blue it turns into a slog. I was messing around on a bug 3 the other day, and out of the blue on the spaceport I had to fight a charger behemoth, which to my knowledge doesn't appear normally outside of specific kill missions at 3 so I had zero kit to deal with it and that just demolished my relaxed vibe. I would have had a similar experience doing a bot 3 running into friggin tanks and turrets had I not been experimenting with a meta build using the quasar. It's just small, pavlovian reinforcement of the idea that you need to stay multirole and specializing outside of a full team is suicide. It just irks me

    i agree that there needs to be a balance patch sooner rather than later, i'd argue that the only weapon that is fully on a unusable level for 7+ is the breaker spray&pray though with maybe the explosive liberator dipping its toes in there as well.
    not saying that they are as good as the breaker necessarily but still usable (depending on the team comp mostly)

      What about the laser guns? I tried the stratagem one and it was so bad. I think in general the primaries are usable enough but a lot of the strategems aren't. I prefer off meta so I've certainly being doing a lot of it. I bet we see a patch very soon.

      @@Reginald-sc9tk scythe and laser cannon are aight if you can clip heads well with them but otherwise rather meh compared to other options for sure, only time i personally ever use them is together with the laser orbital and rover on extreme cold planets if the team already has 2-3 railguns for trash clear duty for the fun of it.

    We waited a long time before having some weapons balance in Darktide, sadly I expected the same here ; we won't see a patch before at least 6 months toward balance (Arrowhead looks more proactive than Fatshark).
    Until then non-meta players will suffer if they try to play high difficulties. 😒

      It seems like we've already seen some tweaks. Enemy armor was reduced for some hit zones so EATs and Recoiless went from B tier to S tier overnight. Several primaries are just bad and lots of stratagems need work. But the game is definitely going in the right direction already I think.

    2 months on and given they dropped #1.000.3 a few days ago on how you feeling with the state of the game and build variety at the highest difficulties?
    Still playing HD2 regularly but Ironically I've popped back to Darktide for a bit.

      The latest warbond with the addition of the eruptor added some build variety. I've never been in the buffs only camp but I do find some of their weapon balance choices confusing. I'm really pleased with the pace of updates. Its a shame darktide couldn't even manage half this pace. We'd all have been much happier.

    What rig do you have? and what settings are you using? cuz game is really plummeting my fps (i"m on a 4080, 5800x3d playing at 3440x1440p), and i'm having drops to 60-70fps

      I have a 13th gen i9, 3ghz. 64gb ram. and a 4090. I also play on 3440x1440. I generally don't have problems with chugging or drops and my settings are maxed out. I have another rig at home that chugs pretty hard so I think the game can be pretty hungry.

    yeah, this is a fair assessment of the game. I'm tired of bringing the Railgun to every mission, I want to one-shot heavies with EATs, Recoiless, and Spear

      yeah. Its an auto-aim weapon. Landing sneaky headshots isn't going to be consistent. It should just oneshot given its other weaknesses. @@mrhat1073

    When I unlocked every weapons, I went through the same cycle of sadness, again and again.
    Unlock new weapon->theory craft a new build to work with that new weapon->take the new weapon to the battlefield for a new flavor of democracy->realize how meh or bad the new flavor is, which makes the build not good to me->back to the ship I take back my old girlf---I mean breaker->grind medals for next weapon.

      Bro same. There's really only one other viable build i have found so far which is shield and SMG + EATs or AMR or Railgun.

      @@Reginald-sc9tk I just hope the devs will shift a little bit of their focus towards weapons/stratagems balancing *before* people start to get bored like me. I'm worried a bit because I see weeks going by, and slowly but surely players count go down (as it should until the waves of hype calm down). If I was one of the devs I would not take the game's success for granted, live service games have to deliver a damn good end game, and be on the deck fixing stuff as soon as possible, like in a restaurant or people are just going to leave. I think they realized the situation due to the recent emergency recruiting. Wait and see.

      I hear the breaker is still great, but the railgun is pretty meh. I've been using the AC vs bots mostly so it didn't really effect me. But for people who want that AV work on bots the spear got a stealth upgrade and can get ammo off of ammo drops now.

      I think its fine to nerf things that are making the game too easy. But I'm not sure whether or not they did a good job with their nerf. I don't agree with this notion that just because its PVE nothing should ever be nerfed. Though I understand people's perspective on that. @@Skaatje

      @@Reginald-sc9tk That is a fair point. And you're right, silly shit needs to be ironed out. But with htese kinds of games I do prefer the approach of making more things viable and not make viable things less viable. I don't think the railgun was that bad to begin with. I did try out the breaker today, which wasn't bad. So I'm happy with that.

      IMO the better approach would have been to hold the balance tweak for the release of new AV tools like mechs.
