My paternal grandfather served in the Army Air corps in North Africa and Italy. I remember one time he told me that food got so scarce they resorted to eating rats or whatever else they could find for protein till food or ration packs could be delivered. So the fact they are eating a cat does not surprise me, the POWs needed to eat till Red Cross parcels arrived.
As a cat owner, this was pretty sad. Though considering their situation, I understand why they had to do it.
