    KING OF JAZZ, baby! Nice to hear one of the most underappreciated Criterion releases get a little love.
    Btw, Scorsese used that same green/red color palette as an homage to early 2-strip Technicolor in THE AVIATOR's scenes taking place in the early '30s...

      @@FilmsByColor Hmmm...Well, even keeping within the jazz context I can think of a couple of personal favorites I don't see mentioned a lot in other forums: Bertrand Tavernier's 'ROUND MIDNIGHT (featuring a towering performance by Dexter Gordon) and Louis Malle's ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS--not a jazz film thematically but with a great score by Miles Davis...

    Until the End of the World.....oh yes! One of my first Criterion purchases, a true masterpiece. I"ve watched it 3 times, and treat it sorta like a miniseries, watching it in about one hour chunks over several days, savoring every minute. First half a slow burn but sets stage for mostly Australian outback second half. Like you say, it's as much an adventure road movie as it it sci fi, unique blend.

    Great selections. Until the End of the World is the ultimate road movie, and goes some places you probably wouldn’t expect. I watched it on my 30th birthday a couple years ago.
    Buck and the Preacher is excellent, one of my favorite discoveries via Criterion in recent years. Amazing, funky score. And it covers an aspect of history that I’ve never seen covered in film, and rarely even in history texts.
    Also I need to second the A Dry White Season recommendation. That definitely is the best film I’ve discovered via criterion over the last 3 or so years

    DJ, if you haven't seen it from 1930 I hugely, I mean HUGELY, recommend to you and Grace "The Blue Angel" which is not only, I think, the best film from that year but I would say one of the most beautiful and important from the 1930s, from German cinema in general, and I would say, simply one of the greatest works cinema produced, period. Yes, it's not in the Criterion Collection (other works from von Sternberg are and they are essential and great as well), but just check it out elsewhere, it's too good.

    • @johnmalahy
      @johnmalahy Před 3 dny +2

      Haha, fair question! I was editing a book of his speeches, so it didn't really touch on his acting or directing career. The material is mostly from the last twenty or thirty years and focuses on his personal life and beliefs, his childhood, his friends and influences. So while I did go back and watch/rewatch a lot of his films out of interest (particularly his early work) they had less bearing on the finished book than with a normal bio.

    Many B&N keep the 4K’s behind their counters due to increased shrinkage (theft). This is likely why you’re seeing mostly Blu-ray on the shelves.

    I enjoyed the video but it is worth remembering that 70% of all physical media sales are for DVD's so it's kind of amusing when I hear people debate the merits of 4K and blueray. It's like they are existing in a completely different reality from the rest of us.
