Witold Pilecki's story is a story of incredible bravery and of nightmare that people in Poland were put through. What is still a very bitter thing to swallow is that allied forces didn't want to believe it. Maybe if they did believe his story then fewer people would be killed there. And after the war he was killed by Polish communists. That's another very bitter part of his story. I'm not a very emotional man but every time I hear his story i'm overcome with grief and anger.

Swedish power metal band 'Sabaton' made song about him 'Inmate 4859'.
They have more songs with polish history: 'Uprising' (Warsaw '44), '40:1' (Battle of Wizna '39), 'Winged Hussars' (Siege of Vienna 1683), 'Aces in Exile' (Battle of England '40), 'The Final Solution' (Holocaust). The melody and arrangement of every song matches perfectly its topic.
Sabaton have theirs own history channel with videos about every song and story in it.
Recently, in September this year there was a whole new Polish movie about him titled "The Pilecki Report" ("Raport Pileckiego") in the cinemas. And his report from Auschwitz (called "Pilecki's Report" or "Witold's Report"), the original text of it, can be found in English in Internet. Thank You for this video. Witold Pilecki was a real war heroe who truelly deserves to be known widely and remembered.
I agree with the other comments saying that another interesting story is about Tadeusz "Teddy" Pietrzykowski, who was a Polish boxing champion. He was taken to Auschwitz and was also a member of underground conspiracy there, cooperating with Pilecki. He became famous because of his boxing fights in Auschwitz (Germans allowed that because they wanted themselves to have some entertainment after their so-called "work" in the death camp). There was also a good movie, shown in the cinemas, about him titled: "The Champion" (2020), director: Maciej Barczewski. It can be found with English subtitles.

I encourage you to read the story written by the man himself, it's called "Witold Pilecki Report". It's not long but full of details you were asking about. He has written it down after his escape from the camp.

My uncle served 6 years for "attempting to overthrow the system." After his release in 1956, there were rehabilitation trials, but my uncle did not apply for one. He said that his intention was indeed to overthrow the communist regime.

Witold Pilecki was Born on Russia but was Polish. He was Born on Russia because his grandfather, a Pole from a Noble family, was sent to Siberia by the Russians after the failure od the January Uprising in Poland. Witold before the outbreak of WWII, fought against the bolsheviks on the Battle od Warsaw in 1920. It was not easy to escape from Auschwitz because It was guarded by 8 000 nazis. But there were other escapes. Once, three Poles disguised as ss-man escapes from the camp in the car of the camp's main ss-man. Witolds report were published in London after the war in English. There is a false narrative about the camp's on the world. They were also for Poles. And the first transport in history to the camp consisted exclusively of Poles mainly political prisoners and scouts, and came form Tarnów. Thank you for your great reaction. There is a book called "The volunteer" written by a British author Jack Fairweather. Definitely worth reading, for more insight into Pilecki's life

One more comment - regarding Pilecki's intelligence skills. You wonder how this is possible? I would like to recall the story of Major Roman Czerniawski, who in France unraveled the entire military structure of the Wehrmacht, so much so that the Germans themselves were shocked and taught about it in their intelligence schools. Anyway, Czerniawski was allowed to escape, he got through to England and played the role of a double agent, disinforming the Germans. He was the second most reliable informant for the Germans after Agent Garbo, but as was probably the case, he was playing a game with them from the very beginning. He was betrayed by his jealous French co-worker. Oh, these women. But I recommend reading his story, which is similar to the story of Eddie Chapman. However, in France, Czerniawski's successes were absolutely greater. His network detected and revealed almost all German units in such a short time.
Escaping was possible, but for every prisoner escaped Germans where killing ~100 people, also with out civilian clothes u where easy to chatch. One of the reasons why his case was different, was that "civilian personel in the camp'(nurses, doctors, ect.) where part of underground movement. It's like in "Prison break" series or "The Shawshank Redemption" where authorities them selfs gives spaces to escape plan.
Btw/ There is famous strory of group of people that run away from camp, through main gate, in germans uniforms, in camp director car, pretending to be germans generals XD.

When they say "underground" , they are refering to the "underground polish state" that was created by ex-military units, civilian resistance movement and the other voluntieers.These were the people who made discreet disruptions among the german structures in Poland, sent valuable informations to the Allies and organised the Warsaw Uprising.

So Rob, many of us have an extra element DNA of Witold Pilecki. We won't give up. We are Poles.
11:52 The answer is "Polish Underground State". This was a military intelligence operation. Pilecki was imprisoned in the camp, but he was not working alone. There was a team allocated to this particular operation. Polish Underground State was the largest conspiracy in the history of mankind.
I remember watching a documentary in a series about Hitler's treasure hunters. One of them ended up being assigned to work in a concentration camp. Only he was hiding a couple of things about himself, that he was Jewish homosexual. He realised how easily he could be an inmate himself. He couldn't live with it anymore. So he bought himself a bottle of Shnaps, took a hike into some snowcapped mountains and committed suicide.
My family were friends with a German lady, who as a little girl used to walk by a German camp with her mother quite often. Her mum used to tell her that it was just a prison. She was horrified upon learning the truth. She he went into a deep state of shock every time she thought about what those poor inmates were going through. Until her eventual death from old age. I once found her in that state, so she told me her story.

Rob, I'll ask myself a question, I've asked myself many times, whether I would have such gigantic balls of steel to volunteer to go to hell on earth and receive the death penalty as a "reward" for my services.
Everyone should ask themselves whether, in times of "peace", in case of war, you would decide to sacrifice your own life for the life and freedom of other people.

Thank you! Unlike other reactors, I always try to dive deep into what I am learning about. When I was looking at Australia, I looked at all the people on their money which was fascinating. Now I am looking at Poland, I want to really learn about what makes Poland Poland!

Surprisingly, many people escaped Auschwitz. My uncle for example. There was a number of factories around the camp where inmates were working as slaves. Major German companies we purchase products today...
Most scary thing is that after the war he sent a letter from prison saying, comparing to soviets the Auschwitz was a kindergarden...

They didn't told that after his escaping from Auschwitz, Pilecki for several mounths had to heal. In that time he made his famous report, that was presented to Brittish goverment.
Just one thing.... in Poland we do not say the Nazis, we say Germans (not all Germans involved in war crimes were the Nazis, actually, the Nazis alone couldn't have done much in Poland).
The utmost tragedy of his achievement (and there were many sorrowful moments) was the total silence from the allies, who never made immediate use of the information he gave them, risking his own life. It was as if nobody cared about the lives of those imprisoned and butchered in Auschwitz. Sadly, the POTUS was the worst one to leave it be, which was very typical for Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The story about the ship with Jewish refugees that was turned around back to Europe is a tragic example of the indifference and hostility that many Jews faced during the Nazi era. The ship was called the **MS St. Louis**, and it sailed from Hamburg, Germany, on May 13, 1939, with 937 passengers, most of them Jews fleeing persecution. Their destination was Cuba, where they hoped to obtain visas to enter the United States or other countries. However, when they arrived in Havana on May 27, they were denied entry by the Cuban authorities, who had revoked most of their visas. The ship's captain, Gustav Schröder, tried to negotiate with the Cuban officials, but to no avail. He then sailed close to the coast of Florida, hoping that the United States would accept the refugees, but he was met with rejection and hostility. The US Coast Guard even patrolled the waters to prevent any passengers from jumping off the ship and swimming ashore. The passengers also sent telegrams to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, but he did not respond. The US State Department told them that they had to wait for their turn on the immigration quota list, which could take years. The ship then tried to enter Canada, but it was also refused by the Canadian government, which claimed that it could not open its doors to all the Jewish refugees in Europe. With no other options, the ship had to return to Europe on June 6. It docked in Antwerp, Belgium, on June 17, where the passengers were divided among four countries: Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Great Britain. These countries had agreed to take them in with the help of some Jewish organizations. However, this was not the end of their ordeal. When World War II broke out, Nazi Germany invaded and occupied most of these countries, and many of the refugees were again subjected to persecution, deportation, and murder. Out of the 937 passengers, 254 died in the Holocaust. The story of the MS St. Louis is a reminder of the human cost of indifference and discrimination, and the need for compassion and justice for refugees.

It is very good that this film exists but it's too much simplified in order to find out how great was Witold Pilecki you would have to read his letters to hi son and whole story (mental,physical ,inteligent qualities of this heroe . I think that this film doesn't show even 10% of qualities of Witold Pulaski.

It isn't. You are misinformed. Aushwitz is in Oświęcim, camp with brick buildings. Birkenau is Brzezinka where railroad goes in the middle of the camp and houses (or more like stables) are wooden.
@@misiek_xp4886 maybe i was not specific but i meant Aushwitz birkenau is name of complex of camps in Oświecim and those what are in close range. its under that name from 1979 on UNESCO list , than yes separatly thery are not in the same place but as a complex they are. my bad i didnt put more effort in my first message
My greatgrandpa with greatgrandma were supposed go to Auschwitz but before they could go into the train a german soldier stopped them and said they were going to do slavery work in Germany instead, probably becaused they looked strong (as farmers) but they took it as a act of mercy and would only ever talk good about Germany afterwards no matter what happened after.
Auschitz must have been the worst place on Earth at the time. If you are really interested in the Polish and Jewish history of the time, then I suggest you read the real story of Corrie Ten-Boom and her and her sister's experience of them at the time, on your own time, obviously.

Niestety Auschwitz - wbrew pozorom - nie był najgorszym miejscem w czasie II wojny światowej w Polsce, choć chyba najbardziej rozpoznawalnym dzisiaj (przez co mogłoby się tak wydawać). Niestety rzeczywistość jest jeszcze straszniejsza... Obóz III Pomiechówek mieli szansę przeżyć tylko przeniesieni do: Mauthausen, Auschwitz i Stutthofu (!), ze względu na stopień bestialstwa i skalę zwyrodnienia strażników. Tam działy się rzeczy tak przerażające, że ich nie kojarzą nawet niektórzy mieszkańcy tamtejszych regionów, nie ma też zbyt wielu przekazów - to miejsce było aż tak wyklęte (wypierane wręcz ze świadomości, jakby obawiano się, że sytuacja może się kiedyś powtórzyć). Jeden z więźniów określił obóz w Auschwitz zdecydowanie mniej regorystycznym. W Auschwitz była możliwość przeżycia, choć był to heroizm oczywiście - dla nas pewnie zresztą niewyobrażalny.

As far as I know, Pilceki made the most spectacular escape from the camp in the entire war. Together with 3 other prisoners, they stole German uniforms, Pilecki had an officer's uniform, and then they stole the camp commander's car and simply drove it out the main gate... xD The Germans only realized later that they were escapees. This escape humiliated the Germans so much that they did not even punish other prisoners from the camp, and the only person sentenced to death by starvation was a German quartermaster from whom the keys to the uniform warehouse were stolen...

- Aushwitz (original one) - mostly forced labor and HQ of whole KL Aushwitz
- Aushwitz Birkenau (most known) - death camp with creamatory and gas chambers
- Aushwitz Monowitz - forced labor in Buna-Werke.
