- January 6, 1996 at the Montreal Forum (exactly one month after acquiring Jocelyn Thibault from the Avalanche) - Canadiens head coach Mario Tremblay grows increasingly frustrated as defensive lapses prove costly; Montreal could not hold on to the lead 5 times during this game - Jason Dawe (Sabres) & Pierre Turgeon (Canadiens) score 3 goals each - Randy Burridge & Pat LaFontaine score 18 seconds apart late in the 3rd period to lift the Buffalo Sabres to a 7-6 victory
Highlights include 1st period goals: Martin Rucinsky, Jason Dawe (x2), Pierre Turgeon, Donald Audette - 2nd period goals: Pierre Turgeon, Pat LaFontaine, Valeri Bure - 3rd period goals: Jason Dawe, Pierre Turgeon, Randy Burridge, Pat LaFontaine
Goaltenders: Martin Biron & John Blue (Sabres), Jocelyn Thibault (Canadiens)
La Soirée du Hockey: Claude Quenneville & Yvon Pedneault
Speaking of Patrick Roy, I attended my first NHL Game in Person on this night in Toronto as Roy started for the Avalanche in a 5-2 loss to the Maple Leafs.
Those were such sad days. I had been watching this team since the late 70's and I could just tell the magic was gone. Once Roy left the writing was on the wall and the ownership change just cemented their fate.
Thibault was put in tough spot being asked to replace a legend in Roy!! Especially how controversial the departure was.
Horrible memories of a horrible time to be a Habs fan.
Horrible memories thanks to Tremblay & Houle!!
Where's the D Mario!?
That question should also have been asked to Jacques Laperrière, who was the D-man coach at the time. The Ds were particularly atrocious during that season.
Fun game, poor goaltending by the Habs
