    Yes you are correct about this adjustment. I recall reading in the service manual that it only takes a tiny amount of adjustment for Ford steering box. If you adjust it more than a 1/4 turn to 1/2 as you said it will put too much pressure on the internals, and you need a rebuild.

  • @iraborton3941
    @iraborton3941 Pƙed 4 lety +7

    That adjustment is supposed to be made with the steering straight ahead. That is the center tension adjustment, If you adjust that for minimal play off of center, the gears will be too tight at the center position and cause wear.

    Good thing I watched this video. My econoline van was making the same noise. So I went about to make adjustments and noticed the bolt from the linkage to the input shaft on the gear box was loose. So I tightened it up and fixed the issue with no adjustment. So I suggest inspecting that linkage.

    Point: you should be adjusting the screw with the steering wheel centered.
    Not turned, the worm gear inside is machined thicker here, and as you may realize the wheel as you drive is always straight not turned.
    This will help keep the vehicle straight on cantered roads.

    Shoot! I have been searching for something like this for several years. My 2000 Ford van has always been bad but has gotten slightly worse over the 12 years I've owned it. I hope I can get to that adjustment fairly easy. Thanks. I'll come back to let you know how it went. (I was told to never adjust that!)

    • @thebigdr
      @thebigdr Pƙed 4 lety +3

      Of course everything is harder in a van. I had to take out my power steering reservoir and my radiator overflow Reservoir and take off the upper radiator hose and I thought the radiator fan shroud but I didn't have to do anything with the Shroud after all. Then I was able to get down in there and see what I need to do and I turned it a quarter turn and I really didn't notice much difference so just now I went maybe a quarter more cuz mine's really bad, but I haven't had a chance to test drive it cuz I'm also working on other parts of it. Mine's the 2000 E150 Ford

    There's no reason to keep track of the 16mm lock nut. As long as it's loose during the tightening and tight when done. In fact, it can end up in a different position to be tight. Because the threads on the allen bolt have been adjusted...

New upper ball joints ( replaced upper and lower and the driver side was shot ) control arm bushings, tie rods, pitman arms and older arm bracket. The one thing I wish this video would’ve touched on is that after you adjust the steering so that it’s tighter, you should start the vehicle and turn the wheel from lock to lock (fully left, fully right) to see if it is binding anywhere. This would show if your gears are worn down unevenly. I’m going to be doing this to my truck soon.

    Just some constructive criticism. Too much talking and showing how it makes noise, I’m sure most people understood the first time you did it that the gearbox was loose so not really needing the reiterate over and over. Most people want a quick explanation then move on to showing how it’s done. Appreciate the video and don’t take the comment the wrong way just giving some advise on most people. If there is too much talking and not enough working most people click off the video and move on. Just an FYI. Again thanks for the video and don’t take it the wrong way it wasn’t meant that way.

But when turning right it centers it’s self when letting go. Have I ruined the gearbox or can it be adjusted to work properly again?

    Mine is tight when it's not running. But when it's running and the power steering is working there's like three inches of play before the wheels engage. What's that about?

    My jeep wanders to the left/right/center. At times the steering wheel is "soft" to turn and sometimes its "hard' to turn, for a lack of better words. Not to much play, BUT it has that clinck , clunk, or pop like yours was doing. All new inner, outer tie rod ends, new drag link, track bar, shocks, control arms, all, plus new ball joints, and all of that good stuff. It needs a new pitman arm shaft seal due to a leak, but dont think the bad seals would cause wandering.. In your opinion, does it need a new box or just an adjustment. Mine will clunk like yours when you turn the wheel back n forth.. PLEASE HELP. lol thank you

    I know you can do this on a C10 but I put a new pitman/idler arm. Inner/outtrt tie rods. Alignment and even a new gear box. Should I adjust the gear box? Or am i missing something

    Great job but you didn't hold the dollar store bottle still enough to READ the label, and you didn't list it in the description. So I have no idea what it is... fingernail polish? Sept 24, 2022.

    I tried this on my 2003 Nissan Xterra and man that little fucker is tight. I was almost tempted to use a breaker bar but I didn’t wanna risk causing damage. Unfortunately I’m just gonna end up buying a new one. Any tips?

    That's actually not the adjustment for play!! That's the over-center adjustment. For centering the wheel it keeps a small amount of tension at center. You tighten it too much and it will bind it the center position. Hopefully this doesn't get anybody killed. The play adjustment on that model Ford gear is internal. GM is the huge not by the input shaft. NEVER ON TOP!!!

    • @ianmoone2359

      Nathan Rohrbough yes you should have included advice to test drive after adjustment & ensure the wheel self returns during cornering!
      If you over tighten that adjustment the steering wheel can stay in the turn when you let go & not self return to centre, during cornering causing you to have to manually turn both into then out of the corner. It’s a common rookie error when adjusting steering boxes for the first time. 👍
