I have to work from home because of my two African Greys. Leaving them alone in their cages for 9 hours a day early on destroyed me emotionally. Now they only go into their big cages when they eat lunch, and into their smaller cages when they sleep, right next to me. Otherwise, they’re free. One of them is a wild-caught rescue bird who was captured in Africa sometime in the 90’s, and the other is store-bought and tame. I use a broom to transport my wild boy from place to place, and my girl bird rides around on my hand or my shoulder. My boy can’t fly because of a wing injury, but he walks around the house like he owns the place. My girl doesn’t know how to fly, although her flight feathers are intact.

Hi! I really need to clip my 2 sun conures toe nails! They are too bitey and will not let me! Should it just take then to the vet? Any suggestions? I’ve tried to wrap them in a little towel and they both freak out.

It may help to train them with the clipper! Reward them for making interactions with the clipper and eventually they will realize it’s a positive thing not negative! However it’s not overnight so if it really needs to be done I would visit the vet for the time being :)

If they are too bitey and won’t let you then I suggest going to the avian vet who has experience with this. It’s really a technique when it comes to holding them properly and cutting without cutting too much and causing bleeding. To help in the meantime you can use a file to try and file through the cage bars by offering a treat or putting up a sanded nail file perch temporarily in a short term perching spot like at the food bowl or something like that but you don’t want to keep it in for long periods or in long term perching spots as it can cause foot issues or bumblefoot, etc. you could also watch your avian vet, watch several CZcams videos on how to get your birds comfortable with being held for a nail clipping and how to clip properly and safely until your birds and you feel more calm and comfortable doing it on your own! I always take Mia to the vet because I don’t feel confident in doing it yet! Hope this helps😊

I always take my birds to the vet for nail trimming. You might also consider consulting your vet about this and get their advice if you would rather trim their claws yourself.
