The cool thing about this is that Kevin never sang before Avi started giving him singing lessons. There's a clip of Kevin talking about how he started gaining confidence in his voice after that.
it was Mitch that gave him lessons though i'm sure tbh it was probably all of them! :)
@@supposedly1-2 they all gave him lessons but Kevin said Avi gave him the first ones when they were roommates early on. The two of them worked ferociously at the beginning to really become a team🤗
I was just going to say this! It's mentioned in their documentary which I think is called on my way home? It used to be on Netflix. Shocker, it's really well done! Lol Highly recommend!
I love it when reactors watch this video because it gives me so much pleasure to see people's minds being blown over Kevin's genius. Yes, classically trained. He also plays the saxophone and other instruments, as I'm sure you will learn. Fluent in Mandarin is true. I highly recommend all of his studio work and also Renegade. It is an original composition by Kevin. Your husky made me chuckle. 💜
Yes!! I stopped getting ready for work to watch. This is by far my favorite of Kevin's! His talent is off the charts. He does know Mandarin and finished all his pre med requirements at Yale! He lived in Beijing for 6 months. He started piano at age 4,cello at 6, and I think saxophone around 10.He also played Carnegie Hall, as you can see I am a huge Kevin fan, lol.
i think it was 5 on the cello as i heard him say that once but heck i could be wrong i commented most of this but realized yours was probably more accurate so i deleted mine and just liked yours hahaha he is a remarkable young (30 yr old) man! he deserves all this success and we all know he is the most irreplaceable member of PTX tbh they'd need 2 or 3 people to replace him if he ever left!
I believe he spent a total of a year in China, on 2 separate occasions.
elaine adams Maybe you remember the details. I know that at some point Kevin was invited to a master class by Yo-Yo Ma, who praised Kevin for--I think--his creativity. Can you help me out? As I'm sure you know (but maybe others don't), it was the saxophone that he was playing at Carnegie Hall when he was still in high school. And, of course, he had just graduated from Yale when he decided to accept Scott's invitation (read: plea) to audition for the Sing-Off with him and his high-school friends. Me, I'm an Avi girl, but now that he's no longer in PTX, Kevin's the center of my Pentatonix universe.
@@janetranslates I think it was around 2009 that he won second place in the celebrate and collaborate with Yo-Yo Ma international competition. Ma called Kevin's cello boxing inventive and unexpected. I can't remember what song he was doing. I love Avi also!!
@@elaineadams6718 Thanks for the info!
Kevin often gets overlooked when people watch PTX as a whole, but in my opinion, they would not have achieved the success they have without Kevin. He is instrumental in working on arrangements. I respect him so much. He's not just talented, he's gifted. One of those few people in the world who have the ability to be amazing at everything they do.
Some people are phenomenal musicians. Some people are genius musicians and some people are phenomenal genius musicians. And then there is Kevin
Kevin came in second in a contest judged by Yo Yo Ma. Cello Boxing in China
And watch his Sign of the Time Harry Styles cover!! To answer your question, NO there’s nothing he can’t do!! Lol
Kevin is a natural talent. And to think he was going to "throw it all away" by doing med school at Yale. ;) Down is probably his best cover, but there isn't a video on his channel that you'll be disappointed by.. watching him run his looping is a joy every time. He's a traditional renaissance man, good at everything he does. :)
My favorite of his is Renegade. Sadly it is often overlooked.
I heard in an interview that the trio were initially very intimidated by Kevin since he does so much and is so smart lol. He’s so humble and funny though so they got over it. Yes fluent in Mandarin, Yale pre-med graduate. He also attended Phillips Academy in MA, right down the street from me. It’s an elite private high school and competition to be accepted is insane
Yeah he is classically trained. I believe he has been playing since age 8, his cello not only plays music....it speaks lol Love the reaction!!!
He plays the sax, too. He had played them both as soloist in, I think, Radio City Hall.
I think Kevin is one of the most talented people ever!! Please react to Kevin's "Adele Medley"! Thank you for all you do for us!
I love how “into it” Kevin is throughout this performance. He’s in the music. Fantastic.
I love his smile at the end. He knows he killed it.
I rarely laugh out loud, but, at 7:30 A.M., while having my coffee, the look on your face when your good boi wanted to talk, was priceless. If I wasn't already subbed, I'd have had to, just for that. Having had dogs throughout my life, their impeccable timing is well known to me. Give him pets for me.
Will do! He's a handful - and you're right.. perfect timing always! I wouldn't have it any other way.
You would love PTX's cover of "Papaoutai"! The song is in French (Scott leads it), and it features Lindsay Stirling (she's insane at Violin).
Loving your videos!
Great reaction as always, I look forward to your videos. My favorite Kevin performance is Sign Of The Times.
Yes he is classically trained!
I could have watched this video without the sound. Your expressions were enough to let everyone know you were totally blown away. Great reaction. Can not wait to see more
He did an album before that that was also really great.
If I remember correctly Mitch said that Kevin pretty much has perfect pitch
Great reaction, as always! You picked my favorite KOver to start off with!
My favorite song by him, its soooooo GOOD!! Thanks for reacting to this, Kevin is so so talented its crazy!
So glad you reacted to this! It made my morning :-) Please check out Stay With Me (Sam Smith KOver), Human Nature (Michael Jackson KOver), Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, and to see his more classical work, check out his Julie-O cello-boxing videos.
So glad you decided to check out Kevin's solo stuff. Kevin is classically trained. But amazingly, he wasn't going into music before PTX. He was supposed to be a doctor. Great reaction, as per usual!! :c) Definitely react to his cover of Sign of the Times... So good!!!
Symphony-caliber musician on cello and, I think, saxophone. Speaks fluent Mandarin. Graduated, pre-med, from Yale. Best known as the beatboxer of the best a cappella group ever. Never was a singer before joining Pentatonix.
This reaction just made my morning 😁❤️ Soon as I saw "Down" by Kevin knew you would be blown away 😁
I had actually never checked out Kevin's solo stuff, so this was new to me too!! Massive talent, he's so amazing. But that's the reality of being a Pentatonix fan, you just can't single out any of them for how amazing they are, they're just all too talented.
“Liked” before watching because i know you’ll be blown away!, love your reactions, and your voice is very calming!
I knew you would love it!!! I love his cover of Sign of the Times!
I really enjoyed his KOver of sign of the times
Bummed that Avi’s Change on the Rise was an exclusive reaction, I was looking forward to that one.
Agreed.
Me too. :-( I mean, you can give Patreon people ADVANCE reviews, but let the rest of us see it later.
IT'S FINALLY HERE!!! I've been waiting for this reaction for so long!🤣
Hell Yeah...I am so Happy you Reacted to Kevin Olusola I Knew that you'd be blown away Kevin is a Freaking Beast with any talents
G'day mate, someone asked me if I was you...must be the red beards. Nice vids too.
Hey friend - I've gotten the same comments! I've watched your videos before I made my page. Keep killin' it!
I was one of those people for the first few looks lol upon closer inspection,🤓 it was confirmed-there IS two of you, each.... Different from the other..hmmm🤔
(It's my silly hour;))
Your dog is precious
Kevin has been classically trained since childhood. Have you seen the PTX cover of Imagine Dragons, Radioactive yet? Kevin slays on the cello and beatbox in that one. All of the PTX members have amazing natural talent + excellent prior training and experience + agreat work ethic and dedication to perfection, which combined with their very modern sensibilities, is what I think makes their arrangements so above and beyond amazing. They all are great in their own ways, but Kevin helped arrange and write some of their best music in my opinion. More please, love your reactions!
Love Kevin's videos. Amazing.
He is classically trained and he is.the only member of Pentatonix with.perfect pitch (though all of the others have near perfect pitch)
Kevin's a wizard! Love this so, so much!
If you want to hear him sing even more, check out his rendition of "As long as you love me"
Yeah - this is sooooo cool. Some folks thought he should have been nominated for a new artist Grammy, and I'd have to agree. Yes, he was classically trained in cello. At 17, he was featured in a series called Young Artists at Carnegie Hall in New York. His folks were quite concerned about him joining Pentatonix and giving up his classical music career! He does have perfect pitch, as most string players do. Here's a really special video of Kevin doing a vocal sax intro to Mitch singing Nature Boy - short and sweet, but incredible - link: czcams.com/video/_nnj2yM7Tb4/video.html
I woke up at 4:00 am for this, and wasn't dissapointed.....and lmao I feel you on your husky talking back, but we still love them regardless of how annoying they can be.
Because of their genetic heritage, his kids want super strong bonds with their human, and make it known verbally. He can't help but follow his instincts. He just yearns for that bond.
I meant to say huskies, not his kids! Sorry.
They might as well be our kids! As much as he can be trying, I wouldn't have any other breed.
When PTX were on tour in Australia and Asia before the Christmas album with Hallelujah was released, they were reviewing the tracks before they were finalized. They weren’t happy with Hallelujah, so decided to completely re-record it. They had to do so while still on tour to make the release date, so they found a studio in Taipei, Taiwan. Kevin was in his glory, using his Chinese and his musical knowledge/experience at the same time to communicate with the studio personnel.
Why they weren’t happy was because they had originally chosen to use the lyrics written and popularized by a Christian group that turned the song into a telling of the Nativity story (which is why it’s on the Christmas album). They decided to re-record with the original Cohen lyrics instead.
I'm so glad they went with the Cohen lyrics.
Been watching your PTX vids for a while now and subscribed, I'm SO thrilled you reacted to this. This is my favorite Kevin solo song and not enough people react to it. Thanks so much! My other favorite of his is the Sign of the Times cover, though tbh I don't know the original. I just love what Kevin does! All of PTX has done some great solo work, I look forward to you checking them out eventually. :)
I knew you would freak watching this video. I was going to suggest it but thought I'd wait until you finished the 10? episodes of the signing competition. Incredible talent!
I've actually read that Kevin has perfect pitch, which is why PTX always relies on him to give them the first note.
Sign of the times and human nature are both great KOvers.
I'm sure I read/heard somewhere that Kevin has perfect pitch.
I’m pretty sure he does and I think he may be the only member that does besides like one more maybe idk
Yeah in an early PTX Q&A when they were asked if anyone in the group had perfect pitch they all said only Kevin does.
@@blitzofchaosgaming6737 yes, and mitchy and kirstin has near perfect pitch
@@Ms_Ria Partial pitch! Partial pitch is something most musician can acquire after many years of working their skill. Perfect pitch is usually [but not always] only present from birth, not often acquired.
Kevin is unquestionably the most talented member of PTX. He speaks several languages, three for sure but I believe someone said six total. He's classically trained in cello and piano, and self taught at least four more instruments. And prior to joining/forming PTX, he was Pre-Med at Yale.
“Renegade” KOver is amazing too!
Yeah..it's my fav
I've been waiting for you to discover some of Kevin's individual stuff. He is amazing!
I'm so glad you started doing PTX member solos! Can't wait for you to 'eventually' watch some of Kirsten's vids, and Scott's solos and collabs. They are all amazing but you're absolutely right, Kevin is amazing and can do it all!
That was amazing he is really talented 😊👍
His name is pronounced "olu-shola". It's a Nigerian name, Yoruba to be precise
#nigerianpride
Oh gosh, the struggles of being a husky parent are real! I call my boy Timber a furry shark raccoon because he’s nuts and he loves to get into the trash. He will eat a whole paper towel if I don’t tackle him! Kevin is otherworldly amazing! Even the Pentatonix jamming on the fly type videos would make for great reaction. You would have lots of opportunity to pause the video and comment.
I love watching Kevin so music because he just so clearly enjoys it.
That was my favorite of his, glad you enjoyed it. Your husky helping you count was HILARIOUS!
Oh yes, thank you!
When I saw the thumbnail of this video I screamed "YES!!!" 🤣 So happy that you watched this one Kyle, I would like to watch your reaction to "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", another KOver by Kevin (K.O.) Olusola and his original song "Renegade". Loving your channel. Keep it up!
In all of Pentatonix's shows, they break in the middle and have Kevin breakout "Beoncy" (his cello) and play a song solo.
♥️ Kevin!!! Can’t wait for more KOver reactions!! 😊
It doesn't make sense how talented this man is. Salute this dude!
He is indeed classically trained. Came on 2nd place in a Yo Yo Ma competition.
He is also pre-med student from Yale.
Check out Kevin Olusola in the Grio 100 for him as a teen also playing the saxophone... He is multi-talented for sure
Yes, he is classically trained, no there is nothing he can't do! I love all of his KOver's
He a classically trained Cellist, an amazing jazz saxophonist (he played at Carnegie Hall as a teenager- you can youtube it), he went to Yale, and is fluent in Mandarin. He's ridiculous.
Kevin's Pop Ballad KOllection is so good... And underrated. I haven't seen one person react to it yet.
Kevin’s smile at the end...he knew he killed it.
Looooooove Kevin... he is extremely gifted!
Amazing is right. I love your reaction videos, thank you. KO is an incredibly talented artist. I'm so happy I've subscribed to your channel. You would have to be in my top 3, easily, because you're informative, and I feel that your reactions are honest. Thank you!
Not only is he classically trained but he plays other instruments, speaks Mandarin and has a PHd from, I believe it's Princeton. The dude is a Genius!
Avi did a great job encouraging Kevin while they were touring. He is clearly already musical, but was not confient with his singing. And yes, he is classicly trained. He substituted cello for the bass part when Avi first left, before they got Matt. Yes he learnt Mandarin and did an interview in it with the band when they toured. I htink his dad was working out there and he lived there for a bit, I can't quite recall.
His cello cover of Diamonds was also beautiful
Your dog's timing in the beginning was perfect. Hilarious.
Yes he is!!!! ❤️
Yes Kevin is classically trained he's actually played with Yo-Yo Ma and was honored by Yo-Yo Ma for his development of celloboxing
I do remember hearing hearing somewhere that he is on the cello. I love this!
KO is a premed grad from Yale. Je was actually applying for med school when his advisor told him he was too good at music and medicine will always be there.
Classically trained cellist and pianist, he has played at Carnegie hall and performed at the same festival as Bobby Mcferrin. He knows a few languages, but is fluent in Madarin, studying in China for six months. I can barely march and play the flute and flunked intro cello in college and he can play the cello and beatbox. He is a freakin genius.
Kevin is a Yale grad. He started out as a music major. He was one of 100 Yale students that went on a trip to China, sponsored by the Chinese govt. When he got back, he changed his major to East Asian Studies. He lived in Beijing for a while as part of Yale's exchange program with China. That's when he learned Mandarin.
Yes he knows Mandarin and also graduated from YALE. He is a pure beast. I think my favorite is "As long as you live me" because it's just a great dance track. No cello, but shows his skill with the synths.
I heard him loop live in the Tacoma show last sumner. The first, I think, time he did that live. My jaw was on the floor.
Dont dream it's over is his best cover.
All his studio songs are awesome! But he also can let his cello 'sing'! It's truly amazing! Watch Adele's medley or even better in my opinion: pop ballads, it's old, from 2015 but great! He only plays the cello in that video and does about 25 song or so... please check it out!
I've said it before and I will say it again. His level of talent is so high it almost makes you mad. Like "You know God you can spread the talent around, right? You didn't have to put all into one guy."
I was just watching thinking to myself oh my God he's about to lose it when Kevin starts beatboxing!! The man is gifted in so many areas it's insane
Another poster commented that Kevin was "in the music" as shown by his facial expressions. The only other musicians that I've seen make those kind of expressions while playing are Two Cellos...now those guys show some MAJOR facial expressions as they get into their music.
Absolutely classically trained. He also plays the sax or trumpet? He's basically a genius!
When you said "that pitch accuracy is perfect" I was like "Well, he HAS perfect pitch, so..." :P
Also yes, VERY classically trained. He's also super good on a sax.
My favorites from him are his Sign of the Times cover, and his Human Nature cover. His original Renegade is also excellent.
He pronounces it; O-lu-Sha-la.... Yeah, Kevin is Pitch Perfect, the found that out after he took his first voice lessons and started singing with the group. He is the only one in the group who is pitch perfect. Yes, he is classically trained, on more than one instrument too. At 17 he was invited to Carnegie Hall. Now, you should take a look Avi's "Change on the Rise"!
Kevin was actually Pre-Med at Yale and that is when he learned Mandarin, he went to China for part of his fellowship. He is the most talented dude I have never met, hands down.
He went to Yale for Pre-Med but switched to music and was first chair cello in the orchestra. I have heard he speaks 4 other languages including Mandarin.
Pure awesomeness! Saw it on your face too
If you want to react to more of his covers watch his “sign of the times” cover next it’s just as great nice reaction
Absolutely classically trained. Has played with YoYo Ma.
I was also thinking, since you said you really hope Kevin gets to sing more in PTX songs, he does sing in Run to You (a PTX original that Kevin and Avi wrote!) It's heavy but it's so beautiful
Love as always. You have to check out HUMAN NATURE. it’s amazing. He actually got a copy of Michael Jackson’s Bad. album signed from Quincy Jones as a sign of respect for it. Just awesome
Adele Medley by Kevin PLEEEEEASE
Also love your husky Haha mine makes noises like that all the time too xP
You'd almost think they don't know how to bark. But gotta love their timing haha
He's so damn talented..plays 3 instruments, speaks 3 languages and a pre med student when he left to join Pentatonix
I loved your reaction, and agree that Kevin is amazing! Please react to his Sam Smith cover Stay with Me, and his original piece called Renegade. I believe it became #1 in the classical charts when it came out.
Yes Kevin is a classically trained cellist and has been playing since he was a child
Your reaction was awesome! Thank you.
My fav cover of his is As long as you love me but I honestly love all of them
And all PTX were looking for was a beat-boxer to complete the group!
Love your reactions. I would like to highly reccommende The Civil Wars to you. John Paul White and Joy Williams have gone their separate ways, but earned several Grammys and left millions of broken-hearted fans. Their sound and Avi Kaplan's comes from a similar, deep, and soulful place. Give them a listen - you won't be sorry. Thanks!
Great reaction! Makes your jaw drop to the floor! You would love Stay With Me cover...I actually like it more than Sam Smith's version, it's that fantastic !
