2018, France still did not pay back the billions of dollars in restitution to Haiti. People ask all the time, why is Haiti so poor. Well, this is it. Haiti was not able to develop because of this burden. France used a strategy to keep Haiti poor. They knew that Haiti will most likely pay this debt for 200 years and the new independent nation will stay poor while they would become richer. Just on moral grounds, France should at the minimum provide Haiti with free education, healthcare, clean water, roads, electricity and agriculture. Even if they do it slowly. They should not give the Haitian government money. They should just send their supervisors and hire Haitians to do the work.
