Citroën CX GTi | Where Is The Rust Hiding?

- This is a 1989 Citroen CX 2500 GTI.
Its been off the road since around 2007 and I got it really cheap!
But is it worth saving? And how bad is it?
in this video I put it on my lift for the first time to check the underneath for rust....

The CX looks pretty good so far, far better than the W123, and definitely save-able to me.

Weld those holes, give it some good underbody protection, t-cut the paintwork and you have your winter driver 😊
That is miraculous underneath and you can fix it up without loosing all its character and life story. These immaculate restorations are soulless and destroy all the cars story for me. ❤
Those tyres are in a gnarly condition!
Thing to do now would be to get as much of the good metal covered with a rust convertor then overlay with some waxoyl or home made "black jack" which is car underseal mixed in with some diesel, maybe add a bit of waste engine oil and a rust killer of choice and wet every part needing protecting inside and out, find the chassis and sub frame drain holes and spray it up into the cavity, paint brush the inside of panels and allow it to pool around seams and joints. It is massively messy, I got this as a young 'un from a neighbour across road who had a beautiful 60's Triumph FWD he had bought from new, first thing he did was coat every inside area with waste oil and car underseal mixed in and 40 years later the vehicle still hadn't shown rust anywhere as he got the boot lid lip, the various drain channels, petrol tank which he sealed every few years, his missus hated the smell of it but he drove across the UK and much of the continent every year and it never failed him.
I have been dreaming of a CX since my dad almost bought one in the late 90s. It is so beautiful. I would like one so shiny you need sunglasses.

That car will polish up well.. I've had a few, reality is they are very different, but fact is they are really simple once you spend time with them.. I had to change a rear suspension arm on one of mine and by the time I got out of the car I was so shocked with the architecture of the arm alone. It could have been a piece of a 1970s space program. Love the cx saloon but the estate is a much better handling car,not so front heavy..
Amazed you threw the towel in on the Merc - there was only about 6 months of welding on it and this one is looking about the same !

Hi Seppo, chasing rust again!! Not bad though for a Citroen,much as I love them they don't like the damp and salt.This looks like a cool car to dawdle around in luxury for the winter.
I agree with you that it is savable and the rust can be cut out and new pieces put in. Definitely use some wax oil for rust prevention on the chassis and you will be fine. Let's check the engine.

CX is the best car, ever. Not an opinion but a fact.
Ventilation is not great and they are really hot cars in the summer but that should not be a problem in Denmark😅
There is usually rust bottom of the A-pillars around the windscreen that is annoying to weld.
At the end of the day it’s better to have an underside where you can see the metal, rather than the Benz where everything was hidden by underseal. Well done for moving on so quickly.

The rad in the back seat might signal that there is indeed a cooling problem. I think you will win against the rust on this one. At least enough to get an MOT anyway. Roof looks nasty but a vinyl roof covering would hide a lot of sins.
Personally, if it for me I would peel the front wings off and prob pull out the inner tyre well on the front to get to as much structural metal as possible then seal it in so it never can rot out. Prob going to have to get the engine and box out to get access to the firewall and may pay to pull the complete interior out to thoroughly attack any hidden corrosion from the inside esp in the hard to get area under dash and inner sill chambers. I think the rear will test your mettle, no easily removable panels and likely lots of hidden tinworm up in the crevices. Sunroof once the headlining is out, the sunroof and seals out you will find it fairly easy to make a shaped repair section or sections, prob need something like an English wheel to create the right curve on the front roof section to stretch it out into a nice flowing shape then butt weld in once you have made a lip. You could hide roof sins with a vinyl roof or some extensive shaping to bring back the flowing curves. A decent up and running CX commands serious money these days so will be worth it and maybe look at replacing the hard hydraulic lines if they are like the XM and rot out in the most inconvenient places.
The front wings are not bolt-on, unfortunately. They are spot-welded on, and there are something like 19+ of them per wing that all need drilling out before the panel comes off. It's a total pain in the arse and a major step back from the DS's own bolt-on panel design.

That is a quite decent car condition wise. I think THIS should be your winter daily driver, and just forget all about the Mercedes ever going back on the road, ever!

Nice car but it better will be your winter project and not your winter driver. It is your car ofcourse but i would strip it and do the entire bodywork. The sunroof itself is okay, it is just the metal around it. Regards from Belgium.

like what you are doing. I have U2's old Gti Turbo 2 1989. Im restoring it at present. Id be interested to see you trouble shoot the injector system! Ive some knowledge and parts for the hydraulics if you need advice!
I still really think you should take out the two side trim panels in the luggage. And the floor mat. This takes like 2 minutes, but you'll have to drill out two rivets fixing a VIN number plate to the car.
Remove the rubber strip/seal at the bottom of the luggage compartment and just take the mat out.
Taking out these three parts of interior is the first thing I do on a CX because that really tells you the state of the rear end of the car body.
The foot wells in front of the front seats are really prone to rust as well. Just saying.
Other than that I think you quite well have examined the car. You know what to find behind the plastic covers covering the sills 😉
Oh, and by the way. You probably have no handbrake. That's normal. The handbrake only works once a year - during MOT. If you fix it just before that is. You may like french soulutions but here they went for the bicycle solution! Mankind has not yet invented words for describing how stupid that solution is.

In the corners of the luggage compartment there is one mat piece in each corner. Check under those aswell. Because that small bit of floor is part of the rear wheel arch. The rest of the floor isn't.
But I'm really happy the car is as good as it is. And its nice to see your feelings for the car. Once you get the Citroen bug you never really get rid of it.
I have XM, CX, BX and GSA. The GSA and the CX are the best. But they are unique, also from each other.

I had a GSA X3 some years ago... a worn example.. but I liked it a lot!
@@SeasideGarage I have a X3 too. But it is a parts car. I got it for free as a parts car. It's not too bad, but it is quite heavily incomplete. Especially pieces of the interior are missing..... and what is still there is pretty much crap.
But I also have a GSA Pallas -82. It's a good car, although not near mint. It wouldn't take long to get it back on the road. But, on the other hand, that has been the case for the last 20 years.....
My most precious car is a CX 25 Diesel Limousine -82. That is the "Prestige Diesel" and the model is not to be confused with a limousine of the kind you se at the Oscars.... ;-). The car needs work. Maybee not too much, but definately a respray....
But I also like, and own, Saab 99/900, Lada Niva (5 door) and Alfa Romeo. And a Mercedes (w124 though).
So, beside Alfa, we really have a lot in common. And there are wery few in our club!!! 🤣

Looks a better project than the mercedes and probably rarer ? looks like there is a block of wood in the (axle) i think ?
Well, it's a lot less rusty than the benz, but still looks like there's a lot of work to cut the rot out... :S

certainly appears a better prospect than the Mercedes Benz and some would say more interesting car,, i will look forward to seeing future video's fingers crossed the engine is ok or easy fix at least,, i wonder if the car has covered 400k's maybe that's why not so rusty as was always moving and drying itself or not sitting around in damp condition's,
What is the lifting capacity of your blue car lift and cost , pity about the benz the next generation w126 w124 were better especially the 126 my favourite
That design of lifts do usually have an 3ton capacity. I got one fairly similar, best buy ever. Made wrenching on the cars so much easier.
I would cry if my car looked like the cx But I'm not as good as you 😊

I think you are buying very good donor cars instead of project cars (even if your only intention is to make content for the Internet). Old cars eve if restored are very dangerous no tonly for rust but also because of metal fatigue... you better buy a southeuropean car as a body shell and put all the better maintaned optioned nordic car onto the Iberian car. ITalian cars may experience more salt roads if you don't go south enough but far from the sae, FRench cars may be also not german rotted but not as rust free... and rember Spain is the second country in auto manufacturing of Europe, first is GErmany and 3rd is France, "french" and "german" cars buitl in Spain Volkswagen, MB, Nissan, REnault, Citroën, Ford, Opel/Vauxhall, PEugeot, Seat/Fiat, SEat/VAG... even Land Rover SAntana... you may find Visa GTi to make a C15 (lots of C15...) PEugeot 205, all king of sapish built and exported Citroen (in Vigo's plant) from 2CV, Palas, DS, BX 4x4, SAxos Gtis....small MB VAns are built in Navarra for campers from very old with om606 to current Viano/V-Class etc...
If you knew the cost of importing cars to Denmark you would know why it makes sense to save the one we have.
@@SeasideGarage I suppose you can contact some european junkyard then try them to sell the half cut, body or whatever as parts... in TV shows and CZcams shipping containers is free, fast and easy to paperwork registration... I guess man hours even if better spent in other task (for earning more money) may supply otrocius or impossible taxes, import fees, technical inspection, etc.
I used to hate french. Over time I've grown to like the weirdness, but still think they look ugly.
