Citroën CX GTi | Keeping the engine cold!

- This is a 1989 Citroen CX 2500 GTI.
Its been off the road since around 2007 and I got it really cheap!
But is it worth saving? And how bad is it?
This time I do a Compression test, coolant flush, Oil change and a bit more..
And reveal the TERRIBLE job I did on sanding and painting the roof....

HI, never criticise your work you do a great job getting these cars back on the road and passing the dreaded MOT. Many thanks from UK.
That roof is 90% there for looks, you did an amazing job repairing it. If you watch some videos on how to fill and paint, guide coats etc then I think you'll get it perfect. 😊
Look at it this way, you fixed the rust and water leak on the roof. It just needs a fine tuning on the looks department. It's all a learning curve.
Great work. I really enjoy watching your work and progress on your projects all the way from Melbourne, Australia.
Very nice. I guess you replaced the radiator but didn't film that?
In my modest opinion you should make the car MOT ready, drive it through the winter, fix a summer car and than give it a season 2 in which you give the exterior some extra love! With it's ellegance this is a great car to practice some painting, cleaning, polishing, etc.
Yes! swapped it with the spare I had :)
Well done with the engine and don’t worry too much about the roof. Keep at it!
Leak Stop should be rebranded "Engine Stop", cos it's only ever meant to be used as a get-you-home or get-you-to-a-garage stopgap and fluched out immediately, but people pour it in and carry on (my dad being one of those people!), until their engine stops working cos they plugged it up and it seized into a boulder... :P
As usual, you work on a very interesting and cool car... and I love your "style". Nice one Seppo!
You have done a really great job on that roof absaloutly brilliant video ❤👍 that car is amazing looking and I'm amazed how smooth the engine is with the mileage brilliant
Dishwasher tablets work quite well in flushing out old coolant and generally cleaning out the system
Your approach towards old rusty cars is wonderfull - keep it up! And thank you for another very nice video.
I am REALLY loving this series. My first car was a CX 20RE and my father had a CX 25GTi Turbo back in the early 90's. I remember that the coolant system has to be bled. There are several bleed points, but I think the one you need is near the waterpump if I remember correctly. Radiators and cooling were one of the areas that did need attention on these cars. Keep on going and post as much content as you on this lovely car.
Just found your channel and subscribed. Very nice work. I grew up with citroens and just love them.
Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing!
My new favourite channel!
I have exactly the same CX with the same engine, so could share some thoughts that maybe will help you.
1. When you have air in the cooling system, you will see temperature fluctuations on the digital temperature display.
2. The thermostat and all rubber should be replaced. It will fail sooner or later especially after flushing.
3. The water pump should be replaced only when leaking according to Citroen service.
4. This is a low compression engine. Especially after all late 80s ecology stuff. That's why it's so reliable. The same block holds a 22:1 compression ratio in TRD and 8.5:1 in GTi
5. If your starter motor is slow and the battery is good that sign that it could fail soon (bearings get rust and starter motor loosing axiality which leads to total lock).
6. Save the radiator if possible. It's pure copper and brass. They don't do them like that anymore. If cannot be saved let me know I have one in quite ok condition that I could give away for shipping coats.
7. This engine produces a lot of heat. Cooling in top condition is a good idea.
8. Wire harness for fans is quite odd because of 80s bhp rules and it's feeded from the dashboard power source even if the battery is nearby and with 3 relay setup could work much better.
9. If you have so many parts of the interior, check the heater. They like to leak...
10. Ignition is the area when my engine gained the most smoothness. I have put modern coils, platinum NGK sparkplugs, new ignition wires, wire harness and refurbish AEI module by removing cold soldering and adding new CPU thermal paste for transistors.
Cheers 🥂
Thanks! Valuable informatiion!
Well done 👍
I'll need to find one of those scissor lifts for my garage.
Don't beat yourself up the roof is in far better shape than it was. Paint and bodywork are another skill I personally think you have done a great job
John
Good work! 🙂
You could just try putting some vinyl cover on the roof. If it does not work out, you can always remove it with very little effort as well.
I know you are a music fan...yes I did catch the "Muddy Waters" reference 👍🍺
As long as that roof does not leak the job is good one. A personal hate of any car is rain water inside inside.
Its good enough for the the winter driving enjoy
Coming on very nicely. It's good to see lovely old cars like this being saved from the scrapyard and deservedly given the chance to be useful as transport, as well as to let others enjoy to see these old car designs. btw, 'I have set all sails to...' sounds here like it might be a nice old Danish expression🙂. I've not heard it used in such a way in English.
I liked it too, also somehow more fitting than the "pull out all the stops" expression in English, which unless you have at least a passing familiarity with organs isn't that relatable other than the expression itself being familiar.
In Dutch: alle zeilen bijzetten. Meaning put everything to work to achieve the wanted. Or: then you have work harder. Zeil = sail
Haha It felt so natural to translate that expression... :)
I would consider having a spare «big blue» fuel pump relay (as shown in video) and a couple of new coils available for a car of this milage. The relay is available in stores, but the original coils are unobtainium. NGK48028 coils will work. They are a bit smaller and need a different type of Bosch connector for input, but looks pretty standard when installed. The flywheel sensor is said to be a «frequently» failing part as well, but I have never experienced any problems with those.
Thanks
Thanks Billy!
There are oil Filter relocation Kits for the cx
A Perfect Circle - Get The Lead Out
Music to fix your Citroen to
That oil filter was probably easily accessible when the engine was fitted to the Traction Avant, or the DS.... You can't really blame CX design for having to deal with a carry-over engine!
Well... They did decide to do it like this, so I will still blame them a little... ;)
I don't know 'bout the Traction avant engine. This engine has no resemblance to that engine. The TA engine was a long stroke engine and was used , with a different head, in the ID/DS up until 1964-65 when the short stroke over square 1985 cc engine was introduced. Later in 2175 and 2345 form. These engines was slightly reworked for the CX, among othe things spinning the other way around, another sump and leaning the engine a bit.
To change the oil filter on the ID/DS engine is a messy affair. The filter i situated inside the sump. You have to use a lift (for ergonomics, at least) to be able to unscrew ((-10 screws) holding the backing plate, oil running all over your hands , , , to get to the filter. Not fun at all!
How did you test the radiator fans? Great job! You got me to get a CX 😂
The brown sludge in the cooling system looks to me like someone previously incorrectly mixed different types of coolant, fingers crossed!
I wouldn’t judge the color variation on the roof until you polish the existing paint to get it back to normal.
Not seen a CX GTI in 30 years.
Godt arbejde Seppo🙌
Tak! :D
leak stop is only good for emergency, it will clog rad tubes if they are the flat type. clog around cylinders. my experience from 1 renault engine V6 wet liners took heads off, solid sediment no coolant flow around block, didn't blow gaskets dont know how it didn't
I was waiting for a comment about the oil filter 😂
Haha... Doing that job with just a jack is torture!
I still think a matching burgundy vinyl roof kit would seriously make the whole roof look superb, the CX Prestiges had a vinyl roof option so should be easy to find a breaker one and have the unique vinyl roof embellishers or even shape and make your own from alloy u channel or D shaped pipe. Or if the sunroof is a problem, how about a Webasto roof? I would imagine one that fitted a big Rover or Triumph would fit nicely and give you a convertible feeling of the open sky, I am considering one for my three wheel van but Mini ones are rare and insanely priced lol If you can find a scrapper Prestige could you not peel off the vinyl roof and refix to yours?
It might not fit. The prestige has a longer and raised roof. (Perosnally I think the vinyl roof is ugly.)
Tak for endnu en god video. Alle os der har prøvet at svejse i et tag ved hvor dygtig du er. Din ide med vinyltaget er god, det vil klæde bilen selvom det ikke er originalt.
Tak Per!
an easy way to take the most oil out is by vacum, and after you can open the oilplugg and take away the last dl, less spill
There is often a lot of sludge and sediments in the oil pan, draining it from the pan helps get rid of some of it! :)
I think vinyl would look good on the roof
Think the cx was the only car that had the douvrin 4 in transverse install.. the renaults all had them in line .. and peugeots too...
I've just realised its not a 22trs its a 25gti so ignore me this time.. sorry
When was the last time you cheked for welding craks on your car lift ?
The roof is fine. Leave perfection to professional body work people.
"Is it worth saving" is a big question with any French car. Unfortunately, they are super cool so should be saved(even if not financially worth it lol).
Don't forget to put the radio aerial back.
I am considering to make a concealed arial actually
How did you manage to fit the oil filter through those narrow holes? Did you have to take some stuff out?
I show it in the video :) nothing was removed
Is that the same engine the BX used?
In older engines like this I like to use Lucas engine oil stabiliser. It really does help these older engines.
No its not used in BX... but DS
👍@@SeasideGarage
Pain in the butt to service this car, ( by the looks of things ) many cars are similar in this regard! I am Certain manufactures DO NOT Want owners doing their own service 😡😠😡😠 Bugger them!!!!! IMPORTANT; when your service your car; Change the coolant also!!!!!!!! About every two years, it is not overly expensive.
Horrible that PSA puretech engine with belt in oil , done a few of em fibres off the belt get everywhere as it fall to bits
Very wierd thing to do!
Take it for a rolling road test. Not sure if that engine is related to BX GTis etc.
Not related to BX. :) Related to DS though..
I haven't aksed you, but what is the state of your clutch? The clutch is the number two CX-killer (number one is rust). The reason why many CX were scraped is that a clutch exchange costed about 2000 euro. 20 years ago....
Feels ok... But you never know... Changed the clutch on the c25 with the 2.5 diesel engine, and it was not so bad.. Think its pretty much the same on this? could be wrong though!
one thing I am sure of... 400.000km... it must have been swapped at least once!.. I hope... :P
Anything involving the clutch means the engine and gearbox have to be lifted out and separated. No other way to do the job.
I think one should use blue coolant. Looked like you put in red.
I think it's an alloy head so red would be right.
But annoyingly a few manufacturers have started changing the coolant colours. So you can't take colour as a pure guide.
Alloy head so normally red... funny thing is that my coolant supplier got red and blue and its exactly the same stuff..... :O
Conventional 2-year coolant is what was originally used. Don't use OAT.
4:57 if I'm correct this engine has a low 8.75:1 ratio, is that the Turbo GTI? or the NA 2.5? around 8 bar seems correct but low, because I guess you should have 12 bar or more in a healthy engine, and under 9 bar would mean a worn engine (or a tuneup needed)... and ideal gas compressed at 8.75:1 volume ratio will multiply pressure incoming bar by that factor, but real gas (air has complex molecules with more heat capacity and ability to make higher pressure as result than ideal gas) so more pressure ratio is expected... what says your maf reading on your OBDII port? 🤣
You're wasting your time analyzing the compression data from a stone-cold engine.
Its a bit low... but cold engine, and have not adjusted valves... so I guess the readings are better then this, but this is acceptable :)
@@SeasideGarage I checked on current petrol engines figures and low bar pressure (compared with diesel as I'm used to) is normal... a 10.5:1 NA engine values go from under 7 bar (worn engine) to more than 10 for a new or healthy engine...with oil at least at 30ºC, so you may be better than expected, but trying to compare with engine workshop manual it would be better... it may be as new... old gasoline of lower octane or variable quality made old engines to be set very low compression for knock avoidance... the older tdi I have checked is a 19.5:1 with a healthy 28 bar (405 psi) at 392.000kms, that is the reason I' always find gasoline compression so low... diesel engines in good condition (even at high mileage) can go above 30 bar or 450 psi all day long... newer low compression pollution 16:1 or less return lower figure though...and you always think something is broken until you refer to the official repair manual...
Har du været naver?
Nej det er kun bukserne... :P
Please do not polish this car 😍
Have to say I really don't like the look of your lift. Looks very flimsy for all that weight.
Its a Ravaglioli rated for 2500kg... way more then what I put on it... Dual piston and dual lock system.
@@SeasideGarage glad to hear it! Just looks a bit precarious with a CX on it and you underneath
@@stuwhite2337 Its about 1400kg so there is a good safety margin.. :)
