Citroën CX GTi | Strip down - holes in the roof!
Vložit
- čas přidán 6. 10. 2023
- This is a 1989 Citroen CX 2500 GTI.
Its been off the road since around 2007 and I got it really cheap!
But is it worth saving? And how bad is it?
I remove most of the cabin, and the plastic sill trims to access the work needed to make it solid again...
And find multiple holes in the roof!

I am a former citroen mechanic, and would like to share with you this little anecdote. I live in Belgium and a little known fact is that here in Brussels, Citroën Place De L'Yser was the first citroen assembly plant outside of France. Many models such as 2cv, HY had final assembly done there and it was a huge facility. Whenever citroen in the early 2000's had a new model, engine, gearbox, ... all technicians had to go to that huge building for getting trained on them. At one point during a break me and some other trainees went on a tour of the place and found an abandoned part of the building called 'CX-retouche' , retouche being french for rework (liberal translation...). We figured it was for accident damaged CX's getting some minor repairs. After talking to our teacher who was at that point ancient and breathing all things citroen, he told us that that was the department where brand new CX's would go after getting shipped in from france, to treat and repaint them from rust they gathered during the trip from France to Belgium. That's how bad the rust was with these cars. I LOVE all things citroen, but CX's always scared me because of the rust. Great to see you found an all in all nice example and i am sure you will get infected with a virus called citrophelia as soon as you start truly enjoying the unmatched magic carpet ride ❤
My citrophelia is incurable.................thank heavens.
Amazing!
I remember my fathers brand new Rover SD1 had three already rusting stone chips on the front when he picked it up. The dealership allowed it to be handed over like that! We must remember that even VW products rusted rampantly. With the exception of the roof that CX is miraculous frankly and was obviously loved for much of its life.
I love watching you work on the CX.
The CX is such a pretty car. It never gets old.
She'll be a beauty once she's up and running again! I'm sure the red paint would also really pop once given a good polish...
Strawberry’s n cream…….Love it !
As much as I love the good old w123, i love the Cx even more. I own one and it is a great motor. Good luck with this Seppo
really nice to see that this one is so much better then the Merc. some nice work to put in it and it would be really nice to see this one on the road again :)
Once you have ridden a CX for more than a few days you will never forget it and it is difficult without it. I sold mine because of a rotten roof and now incredibly regret it. So prepare it if you can and you'll never want anything else again.
I'd be tempted to just use a few small patches in those holes in the roof and be skilled with the filler!
No issues with distortion then. 👌🏾
yes this will be a really worthwhile project and I will enjoy watching your progress. The roof looked far worse before you cleaned it up,I thought it would be terminal!!
I only discovered your channel a couple of days ago, but it couldnt be at a better time. For I also have a quite crusty cx (25 rd turbo2) which I'm slowly but surely start restoring. It really gives me hope that the rust on your 400k/parked outside Cx is not that bad at all, since mine only has 250k and has been an indoor sleeper for the years it hasnt been used.
So thanks, I absolutely love watching it so far. also that we share the same philosophy when it comes to restoring. It doesnt need to be perfect, just roadworthy!
Really looking forward to future videos!
As a proud owner of a sassy 420K km 22 year old Citroen C5 - Citroens really grow on you, it becomes a mania 😅
I wish I was this lucky! All the CXs I have seen are either very expensive or require extensive restoration and still very expensive!
Your luck had to turn after the Merc disaster. I look forward to further videos on the CX showing the repairs pre MOT. Good luck!
Gordon Gekko called...he wants his paperclips back...
That's really good for a CX! Hopefully you can get it done in no time and enjoy it 😊
Am so glad there is some good news. That is an amazing CX. Gti with luxury interior. Love it!
We had a 2500 TRD Turbo 2, At 320 000 km the light controls on the left satellite just shattered one day when pulling on the light lever on the under side to put on the driving lights. The plastics just got brittle due to the sunlight and heat of the contacts inside. I remember how the thing just exploded, I tried to put on the high beam, witch was that push-button style thing, and the rest of the plastics and contacts just exploded out of it (due to the springs of the switches no longer being retained by the plastic). I think we got it replaced but we did an other few months with the car before replacing it with a Xantia 2.1 TD ... I have such a fond memories of that CX, I learned to drive with it, that might have to do with it though.
Man, looks like you've really lucked out with the rust on this one. Makes up for the Benz!
Nice video ! Interesting to see how to dismantle the interior. !
I think this is going to be a great "workhorse" car for you. A lot of work, yes, but a better prospect than the Mercedes Benz.
Like someone else has said below, I think you'll be surprised how well the paintwork will machine polish up once you've done the rest of the work. Good project
Congratulations! Love these CX videos, just such an interesting car with gorgeous features
i think your right, much less rust than you expected, i think before you start the welding you should check the health of the engine and gearbox, suspension,,
Congratulations! Funny, many of the solutions with beltcables, the sound deadening etc.and the shield at rear of the petrol inlet are the same as my 1990 BX :) What a winter beater!
this is 1989! ;)
Wow, it's not bad at all..even the sunroof. How lucky are you? Best get a lotto ticket.
It's exactly the opposite of what I would expect , the Mercedes is rotten but the Citroen is good . To be honest I think that the CX is a more beautiful car , good luck with the work , I look forward to watching your progress
10:43 Looks more like factory wax to me !
Hi Seppo, it is now time for you to have some good luck with your cars. Many thanks , even I am relieved haha.
Those seat mountings are only one of thousand reasons I prefer GS/GSA before CX 😅
I've heard they improved the rust protection around 1982 in the factory and CX after that would not be too bad for rust. But I'm still surprised the salt on the Swedish roads hadn't made more damage.
My CX was first registered in UK and imported to Australia later and that is much worse than even older CXs that have lived all their lives in dry Australian climate.
Sweden are big and cars from up north are known to usually be in really good condition regarding rust. It's an dry and cold climate. Moist generate rust no matter the temp, I remember seeing really rusty newer cars on an vacation in Florida.
What a fabulous video. As much, I have to say, for your style, enthusiasm and articulate presentation as it is for that fabulous car. Looking forward to watching its progress.
Thanks!
Looks like this car was well looked after. Even the roof doesn't look awful. Very nice. The CX has just about the best Citroën interior other than the SM. This has to be one of the coolest cars ever.
The roof doesn't seem so bad after peeling all the paint off. I'd avoid fiberglass as much as possible, by the way.
I was hopeful, looking at this car originally. ..and i won't even say that it didn't disappoint. No, it's a lot better than i dared hope. Even the tricky roof is way better than feared. This fills me with joy. I have a ton of love for these cars, eventhough all i've experienced of them myself was a 20km ride in a 7 person diesel stationcar taxi when i was a child. So far: Congratulations man! This should absolutely be doable.
Such a cool car and you are a brave man 😁
Wow! What an amazing car, really wish I had a garage that I could work in. Must be so very rewarding!
Congratulations on the rust situation, it's such a relief when they're not Swiss cheese.
I've been trying to put all the interior back in my Volvo 940, so far I'm on day 2 of putting the headliner back in, so thank you for mentioning how long things can actually take in YT world. 🤘
I know that problem with the seats. I simply remove the stops on the end of the rails where the seats slide in with an anglegrinder. Then I slide them out the back.
What a cracking car you've got the skills and it definitely deserves a bit of tlc
John
I’m finding it hard to believe that this car has done over 300.000 km in Scandinavia, it looks more like 150.000! It’s incredible!
In terms of warping, you can buy a welding paste that you can apply around the area you’re welding in. It absorbs heat and minimising the risk of warping the surrounding metal. Good luck!
Its an import.. :) cant remember if its germany or Switzerland
Really like these videos and look forward to you fixing it up and getting an mot.
She certainly is a lot more solid than the merc, that's for certain, as for the roof repairs, fill the holes with pathes, grind smooth, apply body filler and sand smooth, should work out nice enough... :D
I think you were extremely lucky in getting that car in such good condition. If you really took your time with a rust preventative as well as your welding, you will have a nice long lasting car to use. I would use a spray on or brush on bed liner material in the wheel wells and a Fluid film or wax on the bottom to prevent it from getting worse after you are done. After all, it is a nice car that you are making road worthy. Why not save you from further rust repairs.
Looks like it´s worth to repair it, great :)
One big consultation with the W123 gearbox is that if you desperately wanted one, there will no doubt be someone else out there who wants one... you will always pass it on? Great videos..👍
Sorry, should read consulation.... Samsung spellchecker!!!!
This is partly why I bought a CX GTi with no sunroof. The only leaks I have now are intermittent LHM ones 🙄
The large clip was probably for all the repair bills!! i say that tongue in cheek as a former late Mk 1 Prestige owner (the green one in the photo on the CX Wiki page). Also had an XM, Xantia and a used AX was the first car bought with my own money. Love your channel and all the hard work keeping these cars alive.
haha!
It's clearly been remarkably well stored after being taken off the road, whether by accident or design.
La cx GTI turbo ces un concorde 😊
You will need TRX tyres for those wheels. Get ready for a hefty price tag!
In Britain, it's about £280 + VAT per tyre. There's only one main supplier.
That looks really good! Few days welding and it should be good. One cool feature with the s2 CX is the electric height selector. I just don't understand why they didn't transfer that to the XM.
Thought the same! Seems like a BIG step back?
Hypothesis: the manual is cheaper to produce, and more reliable. Ironically, what finnally happened:
1. The XM height selector knob broke
2. Because of it braking so easily, unreliable height selector!
3. The CX electronic high selector is quite reliable😄
I have been bitten by the stuck seat bolts and nuts with CX many times 😢
Wow they are annoying!
What no Carbide deburring tool on a pneumatic die grinder.
That's not bad at all, I've seen more rust on a 10 year old car.
What year was the CX released?
1974 for the Series 1; 1986 for the Series 2
"Why is it made like that?" As @Hubnut Ian says: "Because French!"
Please don’t use fiberglass! It’s an absolute bodge solution 👎👎👎
I sent you contact details for a complete absolutely rustfree roof, also with sunroof.
Though you also say, that looks is not important for you - a CX deserves the best.. so please give it everything you can, and raise your standards and make it nice again.. it really deserves it! So, fix the rust, have whatever needs it a fresh coat of paint and polish the rest… The car has been neglected for so many years, that it deserves lots of love and attention…
All the best 🤜🤛
And thanks!
I like the challenge and like to keep the costs down... so I will try to fix it! if it comes out horrible I can always redo...
But I wont use fiberglass... :)
