    One thing that really fascinates me is that these games shipped 20 years ago, and the balance of the mons never changed. Contrast this to games being released today that have monthly or biweekly balance patches. But despite the stats, types, and moves never changing, the meta keeps evolving in interesting ways. It's really a beautiful thing. Thank you for this in-depth analysis, looking forward to more GSC videos at some point, would love to hear about Jynx.

      @ZaZen___ Před 10 měsíci

      Sometimes people reference the golden age of gaming. This is when visionary types were drawn to videogames as a new means of expression, and the industry was small enough to allow creativity. Because Pokemon games are designed to be way more complex than kids actually needed. As a result even games not designed for competitive play had enough complexity to allow for super high skill caps and evolving metas.
      Like other artistic mediums quality shows across time, and it's not merely subjective interpretation. I'm glad our childhood passion has stood out as art. Hats off to the design teams🎉

      It's funny how RBY is still receiving meta changes. A bit of a newbie to competitive battling, but from what I've seen from the past year the "Seven Deadly Staples of RBY OU" has been more or less abolished, with Zapdos rising to #7 on the latest VR and Golem plummeting down to NeverUsed. It's interesting how, after so long, a game can still be far from solved I guess.

    Hey BKC, great video as always. I've been getting into GSC recently and your comments on roar raikou really resonated with me. My favorite team to use is the classic stall team consisting of roar kou, fire lax, resttalk cune, curse skarm, forre, and missy but I've found it difficult to keep pace with offensive teams as I'm forced to play so reactionary and my opponent can force a lot of spikes damage by double switching around me. Roar kou in theory can rack up a lot of spikes damage by shuffling, but I find it's forced to rest often due to being either paralyzed by opposing thunders or just taking a lot of damage by being brought in to check zap which makes it incredibly vulnerable. Is it worth dropping roar on this team? I'm hesitant to only have 1 phazer, but it might help against offensive monsters like zap and allow less pressure to be put on suicune who I often feel forced to use as a blanket check to everything becaus it can still operate while sleeping. I was also wondering if you had any tips as to how I could deal more effectively against offensive threats like machamp and especially nidoking (having to gamble speed ties, sleep talks, and thunder accuracy vs suicune can get really messy especially with spikes down) and how to more effectively get my forre in to spike and spin (it really does have to run from everything in the earlygame in order to avoid being charred by a stray fire move or just being worn down to the point that it can no longer check anything). Hopefully this wasn't too long winded for your liking, but I would really appreciate some guidance if you have the time and feel up to it. Thanks again for making such captivating videos and have a nice day.

    • @cherryb0ng
      @cherryb0ng Před 3 lety +6

      Try just using the exact same team but with Rest Talk Raikou. This will make it more reliable against switchins, Gengar and Zapdos. If you want to stay with Roar you could also consider setting the EVs of Raikou so that it has 319 speed, that's just enough to outspeed Gengar, but makes it as slow as possible to always get the Roar on opposing Raikou.
      Forry is nice and can effectively switch in on nidoking to set spikes or spin, so even though your stall team will have a hard time, you can at least punish it for staying in.
      Another mon that is worth considering on stall is Rest Ttar, giving your team a defensive backbone with Roar and even granting your team with the chance to run Monolax instead of the weaker flamethrower.
      Suicune is good but you might want to consider using Starmie. It acts as a very solid check versus ground types, can hurt machamp, and also provides Forry with that secondary spinning back bone so it can focus on the offence while starmie focuses on the defense. If you are afraid of Toxic, then consider using Substitute. Not only does it block status, making cloyster a lot less efficient but it can attempt to dodge thunders from zapdos to get a free spin, winning you miles in the Spikes Race. I recommend Toxic and hp fire forry.
      On the other hand you can also try Rapid Spin Tentacruel. It still pairs well with forretress but is immune to Toxic (can't use Swords dance on the same set though).

    • @BKCplaysPokemon
      @BKCplaysPokemon  Před 3 lety +6

      re raikou: definitely use sleep talk on that team, otherwise it is the textbook example of stall terrorized by offense. having one phazer is fine as long as you don't get slammed by sleeptalk lax (and you don't).
      re nidoking: you don't get much better than suicune as a nido answer. if you handle the spikes game well (I recommend an hp ghost forry if you don't already have it and ways to cripple cloyster) then it loses a lot of potency. nido's annoying but nothing unmanageable.
      re machamp: you don't get much better against champ than skarm missy cune. just a matter of playing smart.
      re how to use forry: switch it in on forced rests (throw around a lot of toxics and this happens easily).

    You saying the metagame is older than much of the player base made me feel old. My parents bought me Pokemon Crystal for my birthday, it was the first game I ever owned, and that's part of the reason I play the tier, but to think I was playing it like 22 years ago is wild.

  • @Colteor7761
    @Colteor7761 Před 3 lety +25

    Just for kicks I took a look at the adv VR over time to see what the number 2 spot was in the past. Currently it's Zapdos 2nd, Metagross 3rd and Gengar 4th. For a long time it looks like Gengar was the (almost) undisputed number 2, even having an S or S- rank. But around 2020 Metagross overtook it for a few shifts, and now Zapdos is on top when it was as low as 6th in the past. I'm no BKC so I cant tell you exactly why these shifts happen (other than it looks like spikes teams used to be way more dominant, since Skarm used to be number 3 or 4) but it is an interesting example of metagame development.

    i wish i could get into competitive GCS again. i recently formatted my 3ds to help a friend transfer his games to my 3ds i no longer use, so he can enjoy it. and now i only have my old 3ds XL that doesn't have the little "c" stick that the "new" 3ds' had.
    but anyway. i actually bred quite a lot of competitive pokemon on that file. i had stuff like snorlax, zapdos and exeggutor, transfered from my yellow version (using my mates 3ds), but also dabbled into pokemon like Tyranitar, Miltank, Fortress and Skarmory. i didn't use raikou because it didn't have perfect DV's, and was a real pain to catch a roaming legendary in the first place. even with infinite master balls. stuff like cloyster i never touched. i usually used Lapras, Jynx or Starmie for that spot on my team. come to think of it, i never actually battled an IRL person with my team, mostly because my wifi is shit in my house, but also because i didn't know how to get into contact with other players. i suppose theres discord, but never considered that an option.

      i used the focus sash as my held item since it could stop an ohko from happening, since after 3 shell smash you have like no defences at all. for sandstorm i had the 3rd pokemon on the team be a swords dance Garchomp.

      I haven't watched the video so I'm not sure if he mentions this, but it is due to cloyster being more of an immediate offensive threat. This being due to speed, stab water & ice, also hp electric is offensive against tentacruel/cloyster. Forretress often doesn't have as good of a matchup against a lot of cloyster's matchups which is why with forretress you tend to see more stall Pokemon with it like suicune/skarmory. Cloyster packs more defense/offense in one role so it fits better on more teams than Forretress does.

      for example: Snorlax Thunder vs. Cloyster: 211-248 (69.6 - 81.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
      while Forretress is often OHKO'd by non-STAB Fire coverage due to its 4z weakness
      for example
      Snorlax Flamethrower vs. Forretress: 289-340 (87.8 - 103.3%) -- 23.1% chance to OHKO
      This doesn't seem like a huge distinction but 1 (or 2 thanks to its Speed) more turns to do stuff over the course of a match can be huge, whether it be Spin, Spike, or Boom.

      @@tecul1 I agree with this to a degree, I think they would need to be limited though. For Ho-oh to be included in OU I think it would need to lose access to sacred fire and probably recover and maybe thunder, only allowing thunderbolt. For Celebi I think it would need to lose leech seed and baton pass.
      These two would add a nice touch to the OU meta but I don't think they'll ever be allowed in with those moves.
