    I was intrigued to find out the Stolen EV numbers since I now have the Porsche Taycan! Tesla looks absolutely the best system, I will do more videos on this area soon.
    I will be interested in your feedback and experience if you have had an EV stolen recently.

    The reason they are not stolen is because 1) there is no demand from 3rd world countries where all the Range Rovers and X5's etc are going i.e. Cyprus, Congo Ghana and 2) the demand to sell on parts is also in it's infancy and many EV's do not need typical components like EV's, they are generally lower to maintain with fewer components 3) Thieves can't take the risk of stealing an EV with little charge and low distance.

      This is by far the biggest issue with these car thefts. Everyone (rightly to some degree) focusing on OEMs making cars more secure, which they should but the bigger issue is we no longer have a police force capable of tackling crime = organised crime off the hook and car crime has exploded.

  • @Mattceeee
    @Mattceeee Před 7 měsíci +46

    Tesla sentry mode doesn’t just film people around the car, but on your mobile app, you can view x4 different cameras from the car in realtime. Not only that, you can also flash the headlights, sound the horn, make fart noises from the external speakers and even use your voice which also comes out the external car speakers. All of this works really well, in real time from the app. You can also track the cars location in realtime from a map too. If that wasn’t enough, if anyone does get into the car, you need to use PIN code to make the car work (just like how your phone works). Should also be noted that the pin entry on the touch screen always moves around the screen so you don’t get a load of finger prints in the same place which could in theory give away the pin. Whatever you think about Tesla, they have a pretty slick set up and app and all of this comes as standard with no extra cost.

    I should imagine EV's are not stolen as much because thieves would have to have an account with multiple charging providers. They would have no idea how much charge there is on the vehicle and run the risk of driving a short distance and then needing to charge the car.

      Dont underestimate users 'culpabilty". Maybe soemone nipping into a shop and leaving the keys on the seat or defrosting on the drive. OR, perhaps not their fault but for example, keys left by front door, a common theft mechanism these days (after radio hijacking of keys). A Tesla would stop that IF the user has set up a PIN code on the car, plus of course Teslas generally dont have any keys to be stolen in the first place..

    A Pat test is for portable devices. You want a proper installation certificate which the speaker who put it in should have left you with. Failing that then an EICR which will test all of your electrics not just the garage. Don’t plug it in to a standard 3 ping plug without limiting the charging current as 3 pin plugs are not designed to talk 13 amp constantly for the kind of time charging is. They will eventually break down. You can get dedicated certificates 3 pin sockets but you might as well get a proper charger wired in.

    An unsung feature of tesla key security is you can add and remove keys to the vehicle directly on the touchscreen yourself.
    A lost key can be disabled as soon as you can get to the vehicle and the data is stored only on the car.
    New blank keycards cost £15 direct from tesla or you can use the app on your phone as a key, adding and removing it from the authorised key list in the same way.
    Buying a used vehicle you can see a list of all keys usable on the vehicle and disable any you dont have.
    Basically its instantly re-keyable without needing a dealer or garage. You just need a working key in order to authorise changes (the car comes with 2 keys).
    Tesla have also previously updated the firmware on their keyfobs and cards using remote updates in response to an unexploited vulnerability they discovered. This was done automatically without a trip to the dealer or new fob.

    Tesla security works over Bluetooth with proper encryption instead of RFID like Range Rovers. You can boost an RFID signal from someone’s keys on the other side of a door but you can magically boost their Bluetooth from their bed table.

    • @insanityideas
      @insanityideas Před 7 měsíci

      It doesn't just use Bluetooth, the car communicates with the Tesla phone app over Bluetooth and does a proper cryptographic key exchange as well as calculating approximate distance of phone from car (using time it takes to send and receive messages and reported signal strength). So it isn't relying on the encryption used in the Bluetooth protocol.
      All they key data is stored on the car not a central server so a hack of Tesla's servers won't release all the car keys, although remote control may be possible until Tesla realise what happened.
      The keycards use a similar cryptographic method, they have an onboard processor that handles a key exchange validation with the car just like a bank chip and pin card does. That processor will only talk with the car, it can't be cloned or copied. The range on it is about 1cm because it's a proximity card that is powered by the card reader. Using a chip and pin blackout card also works on them, so no Faraday bag required if you use a blackout card in your wallet (it scrambles chip and pin communications by transmitting over the top of a chip and pin transaction)

    Apart from taking the car for a joyride, there isn’t much you can do with a stolen Tesla. It’s hard enough to sell second hand if you genuinely own the car (taking the car off your account is not as straightforwards as you might think); Tesla control the parts market (so no point breaking it up) and folks who buy a Tesla want to use the supercharger network and update the software, use all the connected features etc… none of which you can do in a stolen vehicle without it flagging the car to Tesla.

    It's not just EV TRASH that is so easy to steal, nor is it any one specific brand. ALL new cars sold in the U.S. can be easily hacked with a phone, laptop or tablet, unlocked, started, and driven anywhere. They can even be hacked and shut down while the owner is driving them. A hacker can shut the engine off, apply the brakes, or turn the steering wheel from just about anywhere. They can disable the car so it cannot be restarted. I don't know if all new cars are like this in the UK or not. If not, they soon will be.

    Good to know the bad guys avoid EVs. I could be wrong, but I understand the charging cable is always locked into the car and public charger when charging, tethered, or your own.
    I have an EV and a Fiesta, so best and worst.

    I’ve got a Tesla and even with all the security and pin to drive I still have 4 Apple AirTags hidden around the vehicle which I’ve removed the sounder from. They’re quite cheap and easy to hide, hopefully if someone did steal the car they’d get fed up with trying to find all the AirTags and leave it.

    The low EV numbers are to be expected, it's nothing to do with how secure they are, it's to do with the infrastructure in the countries they are being stolen for. There's no point stealing EVs and shipping them to Africa where there's no charging network.

  • @dathyr1

    Well Tesla's have "PIN to drive" which makes them harder to steal, unless there is something not mentioned about getting around the security.

    Not saying i have 100% security , but i only drive my Tesla with Pin to drive. So you need a key plus a pin code to drive. This really should be implemented
    in all cars. Can only recommend this to all Tesla drivers its just another layer of security.

    I think the manufacturers misinterpreted their customers asking them to make EVs charge faster... And made EVs charge AWAY faster in the hands of thieves 😂
    On a serious note... As I understand it, there is a situation with EVs, where you are actually not a way able to drive away when you need to because the car's undergoing a software update? So why can't all electric cars have some kind of software installed which makes it utterly impossible for anyone except you to start the car and drive it? If the software is able to stop you (the actual owner and registered keeper) from moving the vehicle, I am sure it can't be hard for the same software to stop anyone else from doing the same too?

    Tesla design pretty much all the electronic devices and the management software, unlike most other EV makers who connect units from many OEM suppliers. That's why the Tesla sentry and general system security is so good.

    Most expensive stolen cars get sent abroad, probably to Africa, they don't want EVs in Africa, no charging infrastructure, well that's what I think.. plus ships don't want EVs onboard due to fire risk.

    As for police when my ex’s car was stolen via burglary with key she called me and I was able to get the tracker activated as subscription had run out, I given police location and I got a couple of mates to go get the car back. Waited for burglar then we got the key off him and tried to keep him pinned down until police got there but he got away from us the Police didn’t care
