Your knowledge of transmissions is amazing. It is awesome watching how you tore apart that unit in 20 minutes. Looking foreword to the re assembly.
PS... keep up the work man, the world need more people like you who do this stuff correctly
Awesome video Hiram, When it comes to transmissions, You are the man. I've been watching and learning from all of your videos, but i cant find any answers to my trans problem. I have a 96 explorer 4.o with 4r55e transmission. One day the transmission went out as in all the gears that i selected were all forward gears, even park and neutral. The engine was under load all the time. I am a pretty good mechanic when it comes to rebuilding engines, axles, and manual transmissions. In addition to watching you i felt confident in rebuilding this transmission. So i ordered the rebuild kit which included all the gaskets, clutches, bands and o rings and misc. No hard parts. Rebuilt and installed transmission, New fluid(drained old fluid, didn't do complete flush)What i did find during rebuild was that some of the clutches were welded together and the fluid was filthy. Nothing else seems too bad, But i did replace all clutches and seals. Also, I didn't adjust the bands. I just put them back where the were. Now, my main issue. When i select a gear, I get either no response or only reverse. Park is park, reverse is reverse, neutral is neutral drive and overdrive -no response, 2nd -no response, 1st is reverse. I don't know whats going on. I know this is a long story, But if you could point me in the right direction, That would be greatly appreciated.
Knowledge is not replaceable man. Working so fast and knowing what to do next and what caused the problem. You are good at ur job i see. Nice videos for sharing your knowledge. Thanks for that☝🏻
Great video, good to see you again. You held up that band to the camera and I could smell it from my house...lol. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Whew. Watching you work is amazing. You've got purpose. I'd say "wish I had your knowledge", but I'm sure with a few decades of doing it I might come close. This would take me a MONTH just cataloging all the parts and keeping everything in order, but clearly you know these unit's every piece. Right now I have to deal with one of the worst trans ever made - an A4LD 4wd, my overdrive wahhh wahhh wahhh wahhh slipping I suppose. Perfect time to convert to a M5R2 or such. Automatics always disappoint me.
Bravo Hiram. Great work
No wasted moves: the sign of an expert at work.
Your videos are awesome, Hiram. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Happy New Year!
Thank you, Hiram, and all those involved in the efforts and production of this channel.
May the new year bring you, your families and friends much health, wealth, happiness and peace.
Excellent video! Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge! Happy new year!
Amazing video thank you for taking the time to film these strips
Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
You're a genius. Where are you located? I need my transmission fixed correctly. You're the man. Best video ever
Thanks for the video helped to assemble BT50 Mazda 30l 5 speed box. Problem was front sprag and worn rear band. Using wrong type oil seems to cause higher oil pressure causing servo pistons to press to hard on band causing both to break correct oil is Mercon v full synthetic oil only. Thanks again.
watching the master do his thing is awesome. Makes it look so easy. Been too long since you posted a new vid. :(
After seeing you check out this planet, I decided to check out mine, washers were shredded, and my input shaft is stuck in the darn planet,,, it won't come out what can i do to Remove it short of buying another one. And thx for taking time to make these, a great help.
I used to work for a company that remanufacturered transmissions. To get those servos out, all we did was remove the snap ring and then give them a solid tap with a plastic mallet and the internal spring popped the servo right out. We were replacing all of the seals with new, so we were not concerned with damaging the o-rings.
Hola...muchas gracias su video me a servido mucho para diagnosticar una transacción y desarmarla bendiciones
Really enjoying your vids Hiram. Happy new year!

Hey there Hiram - awsome idea with this 1st persion view - awsome :)
You're the man!
Just want to add my .02
On those series of transmission that have adjustable bands,,
See how the coast drum was ruined from the band slipping.
I machine the drum on a brake lathe and save the expense of having to buy one,,,,
You have to use the cutter for machining a drum,,,cut it on the slowest speed,,,after that then I spin it on the lathe whole I use a brown roloc disc to further smooth it out,,,
Then I use a scotch brite pad and on it while it's spinning to give it a final polish,,
I even machine the top surface of the drum where the selective washer or bearing rides if the drum needs it,,
Usually in a4ld
nice video .!!! God bless you Hiram.!!
I've always found it amazing how all them components operate and people whine when they need a transmission rebuild cause of the cost look at the work involved
Awesome video
excellent video
Holy cow, this guy must be a mechanical genius...
Hello I have problem I try to undo the intermediate band and now I did not feel anything touching inside I saw your video now that theirs an anchor holding on the band and the 3rd and 1 can drive but the drive and second still ok but engine lights on and overdrive can put back the anchor band without pulling out the transmission
i just had my 98 ford explorer eddie bauer 4.0 sohc 4x4 transmission rebuilt now the transmission shop is saying its having electrical esues for the transmission and the scan tool is not picking it up any ideas of what it coul be they put another solenoid in it and still did not help
Hiram you said the "4t65 differential repair washers" work perfect in the planetary gear. Where do you find those?
I have a 5r55s transmission 08 Explorer that is missing 2nd and 5th gear. I took it out and checked the servos, but they were both good or at least not broken. I am getting thr P0775 code, so my question is what else it could be? It still drives but has to rev to 3-4 thousand rpm before shifting from 1st to third.
These transmissions pretty self explanatory when doing one of these for a first time . I’ve done several transmissions . The one I’ve got to do is a mustang . So just looking to see about what to really look for . Thank you
When I removed the low reverse drum, the small "pins" fell out of the low reverse sprag... I put them back in, but they fall out if I turn it around a few times. Do I need to replace the sprag, or the entire low reverse drum assembly?
Hey I have. Question... my wife’s transmission show a fault about the solenoid pack being bad. If it’s replaced is it a pretty good chance that will fix the problem
Hey Hiram, a little late but snap on makes a body hammer with a really short head that would be great for hitting inside transmission cases. We use them a lot in the truck shop for tight spaces and they work great. Also what would you recommend replacing in a 5r55s while in there? I appreciate any insight.
HIRAM saludos y tengo una pregunta mi transmission Explorer a 30 millas satironea como que entra 4* y se regresa a 3* ya la repararon completa y el cuy no le aya
Today’s the day I gut er 🤘
Thing about junk yard parts is you don’t know the “true” history of that part ! Fixing your current parts and vehicles is best because you do know it’s history and just getting different vehicles may be a bigger issue 👍 I’m sure most will agree.
My daily truck that’s in my videos has lasted longer than anyone else’s that I know because I just fix it myself and can buy better parts and tools and still save money… even if I mess up and have to do it again 😂
Everything looks brand new just need to replace reverse band and do the servo upgrade, will replace as much Necessary since I’m in there. 🤘
Hola, Hiram muy didacticos tus videos mi explorer 2006 golpea en reversa solamente q tan serio es el problema saludos.
Do you have to open up the transmission to pull the output shaft or can you just take the tail shaft housing off and pull it out?
I have a 2006 ford explorer 4.0 with this transmission 4x4 by the way. Is it normal to have hard shift from park to drive every time especially after a rebuild. Or am I missing something. All else works fine shifts good in all gears and no lights on dash.
I have the same transmission on 2004 explorer. It shifts hard from 1-2 only. After that it shifts smoothly. It was rebuilt like 2 years ago . I dropped the pan and the fluid looks clean, no metal pieces either. Can it be the solenoid pack or is it most likely something internal? Any help would be appreciated.
Guy's a straight boss.
I have a 2002 with 300,000 miles on the original transmission. Today it quit pulling in drive and reverse. But it would go in low and 2nd. I drove home from work 30+ miles in 2nd. Obviously with that many miles it’s time for a full rebuild or replacement. I know it is a longshot, but is there anything I can try to fix it without rebuilding it completely? Is it possible that it is a solenoid problem?
Question:. With this particular model transmission, what would be the cause of no engine braking in 1st gear, assuming that the clutch bands are properly adjusted?
Back again after watching part 2. I've been backing off the band adjustments 2 turns, but apparently one turn is correct. I'll try that. Thanks.
If a forward drum needs to be replaced do you recommend replacing just that component or entire transmission?
What happens if I brake that shafter thing on in side is it fixable
Does a mustang 5R55S work on a Ford Explorer? I noticed is the same 5R55S number on the 2005 4x2 ford explorer
what is the difference of 5R55S and 5R55E and thanks for show with you do i like a lot i have a 2002 ford explorer sport truck
Help please, repaired the box 5r55s Coast Clut friction package burned down, replaced all friction clips with new ones, replaced all ribbons, replaced all rubber bands from the repair kit. Torque converter repaired. After assembly, the car does not go. I turn on the Drive, it moves slightly, I give gas a slip and does not go, the same goes for the Revers. Manual 1 transfer punch and stalls. Help please, what's wrong? Maybe a hydraulic unit or a solenoid?
Hiram you tink a. 98 Expedition trans fit on 92 thunderbird?
My gearbox number 5r55s when the number R on the plane, the car runs but up the slope not. Can you help me
I want to swap my tr3650 transmission for a automatic 5r55s transmission. The problem is, I can't find any mustang gt automatic transmissions in my area, and i don't want to pay shipping cost for a transmission out of state. My question is, can I use the 5r55s transmission from a ford explorer without having to do too much? Are the output shafts similar in size for fitting the pinion flange? Please help me sir😢
My 5r55s only goes in reverse. It will not move in a forward gear. What do I need to do?
Thank you for this video! It has helped me more than you know! I have a question that no one seems to be able to positively answer. I am hoping you can. I have a complete 04 explorer and a complete 06 explorer. Can I make the 04 5r55s transmission work in the 06 that also has the 5r55s transmission?
Hello friend good afternoon, I have a 2002 explorer with 5r55w transmission, I would like to know what I should check, since my car when backing has NO FORCE, when the site is flat there is no problem, but for example, when I leave my garage and the rear rubbers of the car lower the sidewalk (and remain in the gutter), it does not keep backing me down, it loses strength, there is not enough power to get out of this position even though the engine accelerates very well, that is, the car in this position (the front part above the road and the rear part below the road), loses the power to go back, it just feels that it moves but does not leave the gutter, I must put it in DRIVE, climb the sidewalk again and give it hard back to get out
Noob question sorry but anyone know if a transmission from the explorer fit in a mustang. Both have a 4.0 motor
Hey man i need bit of help with ford 2008 sport trac 4 liter truck only 321 gears working but dont have reverse and d could you help what could be the cause this . I had it rebuild about and 3 years ago . I am texting you from UAE as this part of world hard to get hold of parts for this truck any idea .
I like that, this time it has to work. .if it was paid for the first time it should have worked then.
But I understand no one can see inside them.
Hey Hiram, got a question for you man... An up and coming transmission mechanic... Do you know what makes the 5R55E (N) an (N)? My understanding is that the (S) is synchronized shifted, meaning fully splined clutches and precisely computer timed? and the (W) is wide shifted, meaning spragged clutches for over-running capability?
Very good
hiram i have a 2002 mercury mountaineer it does not move at all what do you think it is 4.6 looks like 5r55w smells burnt, great videos still watching more
Nice work! What camera are you using now? It looks great.

Como me gustaría ver este video en español, igual gracias por compartir, saludo desde vzla
I Trust and admire your work!! Please continue these videos. What is a "point of contact" to directly contract your work or purchase a rebuilt unit from You?

need video on 2001 ford f-150 4-r-100 start to finish
Ok I’ve been watching intensely, and you are still pulling stuff out of that thing
Im have to show this to the mechanic that's gonna rebuild my transmission
Thank you so much. I easily tore my 5r55s apart thanks to your video. I have a lot of metal shavings aluminum and steel. I can't find anything wrong with the inside of the transmission though. I do hear some rattling in the torque converter when I roll it around. Any ideas.
There also was a wine like a power steering pump and the vehicle sometimes would not go in forward and reverse. There was a lot of metal in this transmission.
@@chriskrause2812 I know your comment was 5 years ago but I will try my best to answer your questions as someone else could use some info. I have rebuilt a 5r55s, which is my first ever. The rattling noise seems to be common with these converters, my old and my remanufactured MOTORCRAFT converter both have a rattle on the inside, probably just the stator or something moving around but will be in a fixed position once the input shaft and converter are installed. as for sometimes not moving, it is very likely to be the flow valve in the oil pump in the front of the trans, they are bad about sticking and you can replace them with a sonnax or transgo replacement, which is a better design. also check for a plugged transmission filter or low fluid level as those can cause whining noises and have problems moving.
please i need wiring diagram of this gearbox .
thanks
How much for this repair? Helping me out brother!
Great videos. Obviously the plague of the 5r55 is the servo rod blowing out the case, causing loss of pressure so it won't clamp the band. Could a guy mechanically engage that servo? Theoretically...
pooleo8 try this video and from there follow his recommendation for the the repair kit and video how to install it, sounds awesome czcams.com/video/x8HfyXLf8pc/video.html
2002 explorer transmission rebuilt can u do the job?? or recommend some one in the San Francisco area thans
R Nativa es1
I want you to rebuild my 5R55S Trans out of my 07 Mustang it has no Reverse and it only has 90K and I did a service 6K miles ago so this did not happen but low and behold took a 1600 mile trip and parked the car and now it will not go into reverse.
good day, do you have an email address? I have a 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac XLT. and for some reason reverse and 4wd no longer engages. Do you know what may be the issues or issues? thanx
Question, the Torque Converter in my Explorer (5r55w) started to fail. It was making the metal chattering sound here: czcams.com/video/jiqihvVBHQ0/video.html
I had the Torque Converter replaced and tranny rebuilt 2 months ago. It recently started making the noise again, though not as bad. Any idea what would cause a repeat issue like this?
I dropped it back off with the shop that did the rebuild today.
Mines was shifting hard between 1-2 gears and had 1-3 second disengage between shifts now it only goes into first gear then starts too slip after a mile
I hope it's just solenoids or a sensor
i have a 5r44e in a ranger, i lost D and a very slippery R, but have a solid 2 and 1. and if i get it up to speed and drop it into drive it goes into overdrive and works perfect. am i looking at a rebuild? or maybe the valve body gasket? thanks for the videos
Where are you located, you are amazing, can you rebuild my transmission?
How many planets are there
How much dose it cost to rebuild a transmission
William Coley my front Nieghbor charges me $1600 other shops $1800. But I’m end up dropping it and so he can charge me less
How much to rebuild a 90 s 700r4.
+Mike KetchumMikenhazel
That's a hard question to answer. What's wrong with it? Is it going to need hard parts or just gaskets and seals? Their are so many things that can change the pricing that a general "how much" isn't really answerable.
+purplexenno won't move unless you rev the motor to like 3500 to 4000 rpm and it barely moves.
Who invented a transmission to begin with... how could it even be imagined to begin with.
