    This was easy to deconstruct though! If you look closely at the hamster you can see it's a resurrected Egyptian God. The necromancer with the hat (Jo) says so himself. So the trick is just literally an Undead Egyptian Deity reading the mind of a mere human.

    My theory is that each tile image has a different scent to it. When the hat goes above it the scent gets transferred to the hat and the hamster is smelling it while in the hat then matches the scent to the tile in the maze. No idea if I'm even remotely close but great trick nonetheless!

    • @gaborcsontos3939
      @gaborcsontos3939 Před 3 měsíci +28

      My theory is that the hamster always turns right, so it was a given, that it will go to that corner. So always the fish was the choice, now the question is, how can you ensure that the fish is under the hat? I'm not sure of this, but it certainly is suspicious, that when Teller chooses the tile, he can't look at it and a hat is placed on top. Only when the hat is picked up to be a hamster blindfold, he can look :/

      Love the performance, and also creative thinking. While we're guessing... the hamster path is set. The tile is always the fish. Perhaps all tiles on the table start off different, but become fish while sliding them upside down.

  • @mjlef1
    @mjlef1 Před 2 měsíci +16

    I am not sure, but a theory: Each tile has an RF tag in it (like used in some chess pieces on automated boards). When the tile is place in the location by Teller, it is read by a sensor in the table. The sensor has an RF transmitter to send the chosen tile to the pyramid. Inside the pyramid are small ultrasonic emitters, one per tile location. The proper ultrasonic emitter is turned on and the trained hamster follow the sound he can hear (but not us humans) to the proper box holding the tile. Then again, it might have been done some other less technical way.

      I love this so much! I don't recall trying out this method but it might have crossed my mind, it would be a way to do it. • @Dimencia
      @Dimencia Před 2 měsíci

      That RF tag thing seems like the simplest way to read the tile, but as for getting the hamster in there, maybe it's just a little door that opens up to some food, and the hamster can smell it. The hamster would even dispose of the evidence for you, if there was some food in the correct tomb
      But the tomb boxes seem solid and with no real way to do that, so maybe it's just opening a 'door' underneath it, which lets the smell go up through it

When he put in the maze, he just needs to find the tile smell that he got in the cap.

    1. I once played a memory game with a 6 year old that knew the pictures based on structure of wood pieces.
    2. The fish inside the tomb is drawn and not stamped like the ones he turns over.
    3. Gloves makes me suspicous.
    4. That is one well fed hamster that knows where his food is.
    5. He sticks his finger inside the box with the hamster
    So I'm guessing he knows the picture based on wood markings, mouse always runs right corner, he somehow marks the roof with his finger/gloves when he picks up the cage.
    Reading this again, I can see why I'm behind a keyboard and he is on the stage with Penn and Teller ;)

    Each tile is marked on the back side with the matching symbol, only it's in infra-red ink (invisible to the human eye). Hamsiris can see in the infra-red part of the spectrum, so he knows right away which symbol Teller chose. Then it's an easy trick for Hamsiris to work his way through the maze until he comes to a box which is also marked with the matching symbol, again in infra-red ink.

    The key to the trick is when he picks up the hat and uses it to "blindfold" the hamster by bringing it close to him. In the normal sequence of the trick, he would have teller pick up and show the tile when it was first selected, or he would have had Teller pick a tile during this moment. Because he has Teller pick the tile early on, and then puts the hat over it early on, I believe this serves two purposes. First is that the hat needs to be over the tile for a period of time. My guess is that this is for something like an odor/scent it has, or something like an RFID reader or some kind of other sensor in the hat (but my top guess is still definitely scent). While this signal is imprinted/confirmed upon the hat, he then asks teller to check the tile and brings the hat directly over to the hamster. Again, the timing of this at this moment just doesn't make sense, particularly in combination with the earlier part of the trick. Whatever signal (likely scent) was imprinted onto the hat is then picked up on by the hamster, and it has then been trained to go to the appropriate place in the maze to match that signal. Assuming it is scent, then it wouldn't surprise me if the hamster doesn't need much training at all for this part ;)

  • @marc21256
    @marc21256 Před 3 měsíci +1

    I have no idea how this trick was done. But in looking at possibilities, I have thought of a way to do the same trick.
    Trick tiles. The tile choice was not forced. So trick tiles that when "up" show one way, and "down" all show the same fish.
    Not a forced choice, a fake choice.
    The song and dance is because it takes 30 seconds to switch from one to another, so that when handled on stage, they stay long enough to appear static.
    They all start up, then we see none of them after, other than the chosen one. If they all changed from their "unique" glyph to a fish, then the trick would work with a properly trained animal (always going to the same corner), or a maze board with every tile a fish, and two "demonstration" tiles with a second tile stacked, so if chosen extra slight of hand is needed to show the correct one, or no slight of hand to show they aren't all the same.
    Hopefully that's not the way you did it. But you can make it if you want.

    Your tricks are just so good, Jo. Pardon the terms as I'm not a magician by any means, but I'd assume most people that watch this act and give it a little thought will assume there has to be a force, a read, a switch or a combination at some point, but beyond that what are you gonna do, even if you're Penn & Teller. The trick is unguessable, and your props are designed in such a clever way. The magical powers I believe most animals truly do have is being able to tell good people from bad people. You're clearly such a good person, and the way you connect with the animals is super endearing. I'm thinking that each tile has a thumper transmitter that is set when flipped face down, then triggered when turned up to reveal one of five or six drawings. The thumper is in his shoe or pocket. There are then a similar number of hamster release points that have only one unblocked box caves and the rest in that area are blocked off and the hamster is unable to get in any other boxes. To get the fish box, release in one spot and everything else is blocked, from the path to the box entrances.
      Or a combination of a thumper for a release point and a scent released in the hat that matched all fish boxes. All fish tiles smell like the fish boxes. The hamster smelled what was collected in a few minutes under the hat and looked for the same smell in a box?
      Great act, regardless.

    My theory as a non-magician: The symbols on the tiles are drawn using a special ink which reacts with a coating of some chemicals on the table surface (hence the need for gloves) that make the symbols disappear, to reveal the fish symbol underneath. Ie every tile will end up with a fish symbol, not just the one shown at 1:49. So the fish was forced. It just takes a little while for the symbols to be chemically replaced, hence the extended patter. The hamster is trained to always go to the container with the fish symbol. (There might also be several fish containers, with the non-fish ones somehow blocked so the hamster can't enter these.) The fish symbol that's revealed at the end of the trick around 6:39 looks to me very slightly different to the one that's shown face up earlier, which supports this theory.
    Alternatively: the hamster is a member of the Egyptian pantheon.
    That original chicken trick, by the way, is one of the most baffling, charming and amusing tricks ever done on the show, and it tickles me no end that they still get grief for it.
    Edit: reading the comments more thoroughly I see now someone else already suggested this theory.

      Or even simpler than that. Train the hamster so that if you pet him twice- or even recognize word, it go to the recognize word. The hamster find the right tile after it is reveal, or even to pick up on name so when he repeated, he got the fish, the hamster understand the word fish and go to fish.

      That's actually an interesting approach. I think it's a rather sure bet to say that the fish is forced since I think relying on the hamster traversing the maze to a different location on the spot without him exploring one of the other tombs is very risky; while on the other hand it's easy to train him to always go straight for the fish tomb.
      So it's about the way how he made the tile Teller chose become a fish tile. I first thought it gotta be some sleight of hand but I don't see anything suspicious. I also don't believe the hat is rigged since Teller actually wore it and could possibly have examined it before putting it on or felt the extra tile hidden in there.
      So the next plausible thing is to assume the tiles are rigged and the way you describe it makes a lot of sense and also explains the need to wear gloves. Still this seems like a lot of work and there might be a simpler way to rig the tiles.

      the question that remains is how does the hat change any tile into a fish tile. Or perhaps the table cloth does it. Or perhaps while they're mixing Jo makes sure to wipe each tile against the table which washes off the outer ink leaving fish everywhere...?

    • @Ridorim
      @Ridorim Před 3 měsíci +2

      I thought somehow the tile was switched under the hat with some weird technology. Your idea of ink changing makes more sense. However I don't think it's about the ink rubbing off but instead it's time-related.
      A lot of time passes between Teller putting the tile face down and looking at it. Enough time for some chemical reaction to happen that would turn any tile to "fish". That would leave no ink-stains and also require gloves because one of the two chemicals would be on the table and the other on the tiles. The resulting fish is also large and "dense" enough that it would cover most blemishes if the chemical reaction doesn't make the previous picture 100% invisible.

    the best way to get the trophy is when there are so many ways the trick could be pulled off that Penn and Teller can't quite put their finger on it.
    I would have just replaced the log in 5:00. But since he's messing with the hat so much, it could be an RFID chip in the wood blocks.
    There may be a mechanism in the pyramid that closes all the openings that Teller didn't choose. The hamster runs purposefully into a box, it could also be that it replaces the lid when it turns its back on Teller. As the color is so strong
    it could also be a kind of stamp in the box, which then makes the fish on the lid from below.

    3 ways I can think of it could be done and they don’t take a guess?
    RFID or something similar inside each tile. The hat, when placed over the tile, reads it and sends a signal to the maze to release a scent or food where the hamster needs to go. Reader could also be in the table hence the specific location he wanted the tile to be at. Maybe the hat shields the other signals.
    A rigged hat that swaps the tile is a second option. A hidden piece of metal in the tile allows a strong rare earth magnet to lift the tile which the force of it coming up causes a chosen tile to fall into place. Hat doesn’t appear to have space so highly unlikely.
    A pinhole camera in the hat or some other means of seeing the unique grain pattern of the wooden tiles would allow an off stage assistant to trigger the scent of food to be dropped into the correct tomb.

      Thanks for the creative thinking! I can't comment on methods. I can tell you that they do run down options while an external judge is listening to them. This goes on for about 10 minutes, on TV it gets cut very short. So when they start talking back to me they already know if they had any clue or not, usually knowing clearly if they are fooled or not. Then Penn's job is to make a speech as interesting as possible. So they did search and guess, just not on cam.

    so the ink on the tile is temperature sensitive. where the main color gets removed from the wash of the tile making them all show the same image or table is either heated or cooled. to make the original image disappear and only a fish appear on each one.
    the maze has a few slots blocked off or has something the hamster is adverse to. all the rest of the cages show fish. so as long as the hamster makes into one of the "safe" ones he flips over ones that he knows are not fish and shows that it picks up on of the many cages that have a fish on it.

    I can come up with ideas for the first 2 but it does not matter exactly how it is done, just knowing it is that way is enough for me. Respect the designer.
    But whatever might be happening inside pyramid is completely unworkable for me because I have no damn idea for what a hamster could be capable of or how it could be trained...
