A bunch of us "experienced" guys have been talking about this problem for awhile, with no clear solutions. Most of us have inherited family heirlooms and acquired some pretty valuable old guns along the way, and the biggest problem that most of us face, is the almost complete lack of interest of our younger family members. It is a disheartening problem, and no one has come up with a good suggestion yet. thanks for discussing this!!

I had a very good friend of mine pass two years ago with many firearms , what he did was made a list of each gun and who he wanted to get these. His Wife had him FFL, contact each of us and put a list of our FFL guy, ship them to he wanted them to go to. And on other friend contacted me to sell a nice Colt that his Father owned which he did want and none of his kids want them plus his Wife just wanted it out of the house at their stage in life. I ended up checking on value and I bought it. He and his family felt much better.

Thanks Gents! Another option for consideration; donation. DU has personnel who can walk you through the donation process and benefit their efforts in habitat restoration. In other cases, it isn't lack of interest in owning a collection, but here can be prohibited persons in the line who can't receive your collection. Sorry to learn of Jim Scouten's passing.

I know we're talking about how GOOD shooters treat widows BUT I have seen the other side as well.
I started in a gun shop full-time when I was 20 but helped out for free in a TINY shop in my hometown at 17. Started my own shop at 24.
I say this because MOST of the customers were much older than me and unfortunately many have passed on to the big shooting range in the sky.
I've been involved in selling off A LOT of estates, still do.
Man have I seen a TON of guys try to take advantage of widows. I call these guys VULTURES! And boy does it FIT!
Some of these guys really surprised me, I never thought they were this way until they were presented with the opportunity.
On the other side WAY MORE were quite honorable.
I've tried to pirchase at least one from every collection of the guys that were customers/friends of mine to have a piece of their legacy to hold dear.
Yeah, I'm a sentimental old sap!

An excellent program for iPhones is called Firearm 12:45 Safe it keeps all information on each firearm with accessories, purchase price, current value, 4 pics of it. You can print all of it out.

Gotta ask a lawyer: Can I will “my gray safe and its contents” to one heir, “my black safe and its contents” to another, with the instructions “only to be opened by the designated recipient, in privacy?” Just say “bring a trailer and an appliance dolly.” 😉

If you are the sole shooter in the household, one of the initial problems is this: Does anyone else know how to get into your gun safe?

“Communicate with your spouse” doesn’t always work. Childhood buddy’s Dad, prince of a guy, knew he was terminal, told spouse (2nd wife) what he wanted to leave to whom, but FAILED to leave a Will. She did none of it, gave equipment away, lent it and never got it back, left guns under the bed under a leaky roof until they were a mass of rust when she died, went progressively crazier…” Make and periodically update a Will, and give away what you can while you still live.

Bury me with my SCAR 20 🇺🇸 Or have a arrangement with your local gun store for your beloved ones to get a decent price on the firearms

Please revisit this issue and discuss the 800 lb gorilla in the room. The TAX LIABILITY of selling a gun collection. Yes, it is personal property, and it's sale becomes a taxable event if it exceeds certain thresholds, as much as it angers me to say so. Brent, please do an article about this in your magazine and allow enough space to adequately cover the issue, ie the law, and ways to legally mitigate the tax liabilities. It can be done generically without actually giving specific tax advice, which I realize you can't do We ignore this issue at our peril. We may belated find we have caused a federal tax audit for our spouse to add to her grief of her loss. Banks are obligated to report large cash transactions to the federal gov't, and many don't like handling firearms transactions anyway, so a large check from a gun auction will trigger a report to the IRS. This really does keep me up at night...

Your comment about buying a couple two or three guns at retail plus 30% and several other friends doing the same and the wife then being on her feet again... there is the flip side. An acquaintance I know passed recently and his oldest daughter took over selling his collection and his "friends" at work bought his collection at about 1/3 of their value then turned around and flipped them. The mother needed the money, but was basically robbed. I have a disc with a picture of each gun, and the photo name has the make model serial number and estimated value.

I have been thinking about this lately and I plan to sell some of them as I decline. My brother is a prohibited person, so I've been talking to a friend (who I believe will out live me) about taking my left over firearms to sell. His pay for doing that for me is to get his choice .I do have some detailed info on some of them.

This isn't an issue for me. I plan on taking them all with me. My version of Heaven has a massive range complex where I can shoot as much as I want and the ammo is free. Seriously, this is a good topic and none of us want to really think about it. A will just doesn't quite cut it and far too many guns will already fade away before the will is read. Fortunately I have a preponderance of grand kids to inherit a good chunk of them.

The fact is this! I’ve had a grandfather and a grandfather figure friend promise they’re gun collection to me upon their death. With tears running down their cheeks! My grandmother and the friends wife knew of their request. I never saw either ones guns, not one item from the collection. I was told by the friends wife, you can go to this gun dealer and buy any of them you want that’s just good business. 🚨🚨🚨“What to do with your guns before you die”‼️🦅🇺🇸🗽⚖️
