  • Sorry dooters, she's not an introvert
Way shorter than my other stuff, but its not a very complicated topic. lmk if you guys prefer the shorter ones. It feels a little weird not diving into the topic more but its also much easier to make and hopefully (?) easier to enjoy

In November I told all of you to buy Bocchi stock and now I'm back here with my lambo to rub it in. Even the godfather of anitube backed me up on this (gigguk rating bocchi). But now that the rest of the community has caught up there's a disturbing trend we need to talk about.
You've read these reviews already. (quote some "I relate because I'm introverted, I like bocchi because its so relatable") Or any number of these "literally me" posts. Obviously I'm not dogging people for finding a character relatable but these sort of posts show a really terrible engagement with the story- let me explain.

I wish this had more views (and that I found it sooner). I've been against the conflation of "socially anxious" and "introvert" since forever, but it's like running against the wind. MANY people already see these things as being identical, and I hate it. And yeah, you can absolutely be socially anxious as an extrovert, which you can definitely say Bocchi leans towards. Like damn, it's like people are completely ignoring her motivations and sometimes overly ambitious life goals. Sure, they may be played as jokes sometimes, but they are absolutely things Bocchi wants. Hell, the WHOLE REASON Bocchi started learning guitar was because she saw a band member say on TV that through music, even introverts can shine and be popular (yes, "introvert" may have been used incorrectly here, which isn't exactly unrealistic, and it certainly isn't an excuse for others to make the same mistake). The fact that she gets overly anxious during social situations isn't because she doesn't ACTUALLY want to be there, but because she's... well, socially anxious??
And yeah, I would also say you can't fully judge how extroverted or introverted she is due to her social anxiety getting in the way. But calling her an "introvert" right off the bat just because she's alone most of the time is absolutely wrong in my opinion, because she's alone against her desires.

I think the show does a great job of showing a wide range of introversion and extroversion. Ryo is clearly more introverted than Bocchi but it is a spectrum, Bocchi has shown that she doesn't like to hang around people for too long in episode 9 she is scared of hanging out with Kita everyday and in episode 1 she literally claims she is too tired from too much social interaction which is standard introvert. She is more socially anxious, shy and awkward than she is introverted but even introverts can desire to be famous and popular and many wish that could be extroverted.
Everyone needs some social interaction so after three years of not talking to anyone of course she's desperate for friends and experiences. On the other hand, I could see even an extrovert being tired after a day of talking if they hadn't really done so in 3 years
Likewise, Kita is more extroverted than Nijika. I'm mostly basing this on the fact we haven't heard about her hanging out with her other friends and she mostly did housework over the summer, she strikes me as more of an ambivert which fits her whole self-secure attitude she has but mabye the manga disproves this more.
If Bocchi magically wasn't socially anxious I could see her being somewhat closer to an ambivert but that idea that she extends energy by being around people is clearly an aspect of introversion and I think there is more evidence for her being so than not. Likewise, she could be more of an extrovert and that hasn't fully come out of her yet but right now I think it's harder to claim that she clearly is one

Yep, I don't even need to see the video to agree. She is a clear extrovert with an extreme case of Social anxiety. All you need to do is to watch the first episode to notice she's not an actual introvert.
The way she needs that social interaction already tells what you need to know.

Imo theres no data to tell if bocchi is an intro or extrovert. The most important thing is her social anxiety, and personality type doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if you're an introvert or an extrovert, you always will always need social interactions. If you can't satisfy your needs (bc of anxiety for example), you're getting frustrated, even if you're the greatest introvert of all introverts.

man's is cooking. As someone who tends to be introverted most of his life, I'm so so so tired of people saying that "introverts" are socially awkward, anti-social, or have social anxiety to one degree or another. I identified with Ryo way more than I did Hitori

I think calling her a extrovert is too much, but she clearly is less introverted than Ryou. There are clues spread through the entire show, but the most revealing ones are in episode 9: she wants to hang out with her friends but she is terrified of the idea of seeing Kita everyday during winter vacation.

Intro-extro-version is a spectrum, for once a person who preferred to not engage in too much social activities could change into a party-loving person over the course of time with correct approaches, and vice versa.
Bocchi herself may seem to be Introverted in a glance, in which she can get exhausted over social interactions easily. But it's more of her social anxiety kicking in rather than a true introvert thought process. Underneath that "introvert" shell, though, lies her desire to get better at socializing and to solidify her band's relationship. Her soul wants to become an extrovert, but she has to fight her social anxiety that rendered her to be the shy and awkward person she was. Therefore she went to this flip-flop switcheroo of social interaction dilemma.
    Here's the diagram :
Bocchi wants to be more extroverted -> Bocchi goes on socializing -> Bocchi gets overwhelmed -> Bocchi chose the "introvert" lifestyle -> Repeat
And yes, a socially confident person could be an introvert if they chose not to socialize too much, or preferred to go on their own life alone without bothering other people too much. Ryo is the perfect example for this type of person, because she prefers to be alone but she's more than capable on interacting with other people.

Bocchi and Ryo are both introverts, the difference is that Bocchi doesn't want to be introverted but is forced into being one as a result of her own anxiety while Ryo is an introvert by choice

doesnt really help that the Crunchyroll description literally describes Bocchi as introverted, though perhaps Cloverworks is gonna go all "sike" on basically everyone during season 2 which is totally happening right

i disagree, i think that you are missing one thing that the anime shows: the fact that she constantly feels lonely, Loneliness is a feeling that can hit anyone, extrovert or introvert, and this feeling of not being part of anything made she try to persue some type of relationship with other people (pretty passive since she never actually tried to talk to no one), introverts do feel lonely, and is a horrible feeling. as you showed ryu is the "perfect" description of an introvert, and i totally agree with that, but what differ Bocchi from her is that Bocchi feels lonely, the massive feeling of not being wanted for no one. You also showed the difference between Shy and Introvert, that is actually correct as you showed, but as i said, you forgot the fact that she is lonely.
In a nuthsell: You can be an introvert and at the same time search for social interaction, there's nothing wrong with that, the human is being of social interaction and the lack of this will make you feel lonely that is actually a illness, Bocchi is an introvert that generated Loneliness and then generated social anxiety in her got the loneliness.
but your video is really well made, you deserve more atention your content is awesome :)

But if she were an introvert, wouldn't that loneliness be filled through her interactions with the band and others, just like Ryou is fine just having Nijika, as opposed to Bocchi's ultimate goal of being a famous guitarist who sells out huge stadiums and appears on popular TV shows?

    • @bloody4558
      @bloody4558 Před rokem +4

@@bongobingobango1042 yes, if she were an introvert she wouldn't feel lonely because her relationship with the band would already be fulfill her social needs. The guy literally doesn't understand what a real Introvert really is.
Bocchi is clearly and extrovert with social anxiety. She craves social interaction and normal friendships. She wants to be close to someone and to feel loved by the people around her. That is not just a sign f loneliness, these are he needs of an extrovert. Introverts merely content themselves with being near people, so long as they only have one single friend, it's already enough for them. Aside from that they prefer being alone and doing things on their own. That's is not at all how Bocchi is. There's only one Introvert in the series and it's Ryo. Ryo is a clear case of a true Introvert, she doesn't feel lonely when she is alone, she doesn't mind being by herself when her friends are doing something else. She likes being in the band but doesn't really feel like doing everything with them.
Unlike Bocchi who wants to be with people all the time

    • @bloody4558
      @bloody4558 Před rokem

By the way my source is because I'm both. I am an actual introvert, someone like Ryo. And I do have social anxiety.
I don't feel the need to be near people, and I don't feel lonely for being left behind. Much on the contrary I fully enjoy my alone time.
My social Anxiety kicks in in the situations where I need to socialize, for example, going to the market to buy groceries, or being forced to have social interactions.
That's when the anxiety of "shyness" kicks in.
So it doesn't affect me as much as it affects Bocchi. Once I get to know someone I slowly become used to it and communicate properly. So I don't really feel lonely because I'm an introvert, I don't feel the need for social affirmation, I get my social needs from short and simple interactions and move on to my alone time fully satisfied.
Can you see how it's different from an extrovert like Bocchi. She feels terrible because she wants to be like everyone else, she is starved for social engagements by she is so fearful at the same time that she can't ever start them, she always waits for someone else to begin the conversation.

@@bloody4558 Introversion is a spectrum so just because your experiences with introversion is different than hers doesn't mean that she isn't an introvert. She is less introverted than Ryo but she is shown to be worn out by social interaction at the end of episode 1, where she claims she is tired from too much time with them and leaves, and in ep 9 where she is scared of hanging out with kita everyday. Introverts can desire to be popular and famous and that often manifests in the desire to be more extroverted because those dreams would be easier if they were but that doesn't means she is. She may be extroverted but it definitely isn't clear and I think it's safer to say she is an introvert.
Source, I am introverted and socially anxious and not everyone's experiences with these things are the same

Bocchi is 100 percent an introvert but she desires human contact. She gets tired from socialising, like with episode 1 where when Nijika says to have a post concert discussion Bocchi say "I'm exhausted from socialising so I'm going home" She does have social anxiety but that's not what people talk about when they call her an introvert.
There is a great video that talks about how Bocchi is wrong about her "Desire to fix herself" Stating that episode 8 is about Nijika trying to teach bocchi that just because she is a socially awkward introvert it doesn't mean she isn't a hero. Pushing the idea that bocchi doesn't need to "heal" or whatever and just need gradual self improvement (On her skills in the band, and her social skills)
TLDR Bocchi is an introvert and mistakenly thinks this is a flaw thus trying to "Correct" herself
