Ever since Taylor Swift's highly anticipated double-album 'The Tortured Poets Department' (TTPD) released in April 2024, the reaction has been extremely mixed, with Swifties saying it's one of her best albums, and the general public saying it's one of her worst. In this video, I analyse the reaction to the single and music video 'Fortnight', analyse the lyrics to the whole album, and break down the entire tortured poets era, from its announcement at the Grammys, to the promo, to the album rollout, and to the reviews and reactions. I break down the allegation that Taylor is becoming the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) of pop music and that she is becoming overexposed, particularly through the re-recordings, the eras tour, and her relationship with Travis Kelce, and previous relationships with Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy. I also break down why the reaction to this album has been so different to Ariana Grande's Eternal Sunshine, Beyonce's Cowboy Carter, and Taylor's previous albums: Debut, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, Reputation, Lover, Folklore, Evermore, Midnights, and the Taylor's Version albums.

This is her "difficult woman" album. It's a brilliant ode to all the messy, unlikable famous women who came before her, and I love how much she leans into that. I think it's her best work too besides evermore and folklore, and this is another fantastic analysis. The GP's reaction will always be predictable, and it's a shame most people will dismiss it right off the bat for the same tired reasons everyone else is parroting. At the same time, it doesn't really matter, because she made this album for HER.

The difference between the recording time of folk-more and TTPD is that folk-more was mostly written during the pandemic when she had a lot of free time to write and refine her work, while TTPD was recorded mostly during The Eras Tour which gave her a little less time to make truly spectacular material.

I do agree that TTPD could've had much better editing, she could've switched many of the standard version tracks with anthology tracks and it would've fared much better, especially under the eyes of non-swifties. and also to give people breaks so some of the more upbeat songs are put in there specifically in a spot to add some levity.
I also think the first half is more like reliving and expressing and getting out all that rage and then the second half is more like reflection and softer and after it's over.

Even people who like Taylor Swift criticized this album. And the serious press, which praised Folklore to the heavens, also rated this album worse. And these people definitely have their arguments. These are not general haters. I have the feeling that some fans really don't manage to show the slightest degree of objectivity. Just because you're a fan doesn't mean you should blindly defend everything. This album isn't bad, but it's just not as good quality or innovative as some of its predecessors. It's not a bad thing and it's the logical consequence if you don't take the time to really concentrate on it, but record it alongside a world tour.

I don’t think it’s ever bad to ever have lore in music. Great example is twenty one pilots. They have so much lore and you have to be a big fan to understand it and a lot of their songs (especially new ones). They are pretty popular, but they are nowhere near Taylor Swift level of popularity. If they did, I’m sure they would get criticism for being too cryptic and too lore focused. A lot of people criticize her just because of how popular she is and I think that is so unfair.

Yes! Listening to TTPD is like talking to Taylor when she's a little drunk and pretty sad but still a bookworm and smartypants who she never stops to be. She's just revealing her feelings to you but in her usual somewhat cringey funny elegant and overdramatic manner. I think Taylor as an artist got to a point where she can just be herself for a minute and let public do the work of understanding if it's good or bad or genius.
Also ttpd feels like a big closure somehow, like she's finished a pig chapter of her live, and said everything she wanted to say abt it.
And it's also the most reflective work of hers, trying to embrace the pros and cons of being Taylor Swift.
Her personality, after all, one of the most interesting parts of her art, cause she's childish and naive and overdramatic but brilliant and smart at the same time, so big and loud yet so quiet and sad, petty and generous, bookwormish yet loving to party and being observed. So in terms of showing who she really is ttpd is priceless

First listen I was so awestruck with having a new album that I didn’t take much notice of the music itself. Upon second, third and fourth listen I started the get it and now almost 3 weeks later, it’s the only thing I’ve been playing on repeat. It’s cohesive in its theme of pining after someone whilst feeling trapped in a relationship, followed by undergoing scrutiny for her choices and her thoughts during public moments whilst heartbroken, then ending with moving forward into a new relationship and forgetting the past whilst calling out the music industry as a whole in its recycling of treating women the same as those that come before them

The funny thing is everyone seems to assume that she's portraying herself as a tortured poet. Just listening to the title track alone lets you know that she's being ironic.
It's ok if someone doesn't like it. It's totally fair. Push backs bring out the best in artists and there are valid constructive criticisms that I think Taylor should take into consideration for her next project (like working with new producers)
But majority of the criticisms I've seen lack any real critical thinking. Just bad faith arguments, stan twitter talking points, and always bringing up her billionaire status.
Personally, the more I listen to it the more I love this album. However, I do think that she should've released the anthology maybe a week later or better yet, a fortnight later.

the problem is that most of those people haven't even heard it and even if they have they all kind of assumed from a misogynistic standpoint that she isn't smart enough to do anything like that.

This is one of the most on the nose responses to the reviews (and ultimately a review within itself). You touch on sooooo many points about this album that I’ve picked up on, but have yet to see any of the reviews from either fans or critics pick up on. And I’ve been wanting to shout about these points, so I can’t tell you how rewarding it is to experience your acknowledgement of these. Namely 1.) that she does employ a new sound 2.) the new sound being this western sound (though I think you can elaborate further here) 3.) that this album has a few inter-connecting themes and (3b) the exacerbation that her relationship to mega fame has on the other themes (heartbreak, isolation, and concluding unfinished thoughts that have begun on prior projects and eras). Also 4.) how the EXTREME variation in rankings, reviews, preferences in sounds on the albums, and thoughts on lyricism refute one of the very consistent criticisms of this album sounding overly cohesive. I could go on and on but I digress.
Last point: despite my vehement love for this review, I don’t emphatically declare this album as her best work as others do. It has valid criticism and I would probably rank it (w the anthology) as 4th or 5th for me. With out the anthology at 6th or 7th. And just the anthology as 3rd or 4th. So overall mid to upper-mid

Excellent summary. TTPD is my favorite album of all time. I have come to like all 31 songs, and I love all but 2. (Robin and Windows have grown on me, but I could live without them.)
I wish I understood why so many people refer to certain lyrics as "cringy". It's probably one of those things where you either get it or you don't, and I don't. But I'm wondering if there might be any plausible way to argue that they are objectively bad or, at least, some way to explain in objective terms, why the lyrics feel cringy to so many people. Is there, for example, something related to age. I'm 66yo so maybe I'm missing some context that the younger generations share. If so, that would be an example of an objectively measurable factor (a survey would show a statistically significant difference between generations). Something similar could be said for male/female or memberships in other fandoms. (I'm a swiftie, but this is the only fandom I've ever been in. Prior to Taylor, "fandom" just wasn't a thing for me.) Anyway, sorry, I'm starting to ramble.

Setting aside the "quality" of the record, I'm tired of hearing that it is a double album. It's not. You do not see two albums in the streaming platforms, you see the Standard one, and the 30+ song version. Obviously it is so she can capitalize as many streams as possible for a single album, but it's just such a chart obsessed tactic that it overshadows any kind of "artistic vision" behind the "double album" gimmick.

Then came ME! and I could not stand it and didn't even bother with Lover.
Until there was Folklore. This really hit me at a perfect time perfectly, being one of my favorite albums not just by her but in general. It also made me re-listen older albums, like the entirety of Red and 1989 and Fearless. And I also listened to Lover and it's now second on my favorite list (or third, depending on my mood/day :D).
I liked Midnight very much in Writing and good enough in Sound to like it a lot as well.
Just the tortured poet department... I guess I am not a Swifty enough to get something out of just lore. I really don't like the way it sounds - like a slightly less good enough than Midnight - and I can't find the redeeming qualities that Midnight had for me in Lyrics and Melodies - and cool weird tracks like "Midnight Rain".
I listened to five songs. Then decided, well, I guess I am not in the right mood, came back a few days later, listened to the tracks one to eleven and then gave up on the album (for now). Yes I know, "You didn't even finish". No, I don't need to force myself through two hours, if I didn't like the first third. And yes, I can be patient and get hooked by a story. I love the 10 minute version of "All Too Well".
It is not that I think it is a bad album per se. I just personally don't like the sound and the writing doesn't save it for me. And I really wanted to like it, was very hyped.
I think I was expecting a folklore-ish sound/style, given the title and also the aesthetic. Speaking of the title: The title track really killed it for me. I get now that it's apparently meant tongue and cheek. (Although the way it is sung did not really give it away in my opinion.) But why use it as the title track then? It's almost as if she deliberately tried to set the wrong expectations.
Sorry for the rant. I was just very much looking forward and am now pretty disappointed. And maybe someone finds himself in this.

The album is messy to say in the least amount of words. There is some songs that are quite good but there isn’t enough good to great songs to make this her best album let alone a great album in her discography.
I truly believe that part of it is that she is still working with Jack solely. Yes Aaron had made an appearance but they are kind of yes manish for her. Sonically it sounds different for those who listen to music fairly casually but Jack’s synth is unmistakable.
I would be more content for her to only release the best she wrote for this album and maybe the other songs that weren’t cohesive as an EP or a separate album.
For anybody who says art is subjective you are wrong. There is a little truth to it. Art is subjective in matters of taste and only taste. For the most part art is objective especially when you get more specific in each field.
Also if you like the album that’s great but don’t tell MUSIC critics that they are wrong. They have studied music longer than most. Swifties need to let up on their parasocial relationship they have with Taylor Swift.

The reason it is mixed is because a lot of people just give it one or two listens and then judge it. After 4 listens I am finding it better each time, and omg, when I first heard the album I was thinking 'wow, this isn't very good', lol, now I'm like 'this could be her best ever!!'. Even top critics have recanted what they first said about the album saying they spoke too quick and the album has 'grown' on them lol. I find the whole thing interesting, because those who think it is bad really do think it is bad lol.

It was more thought-out, well understood, and what I felt was unbiased critique. I believe your review of this album was better than any of the most respected reviews. The take on the video just confirms what I thought on the album.
not a fan here, I like a couple of songs here and there, folklore was her peak for me and the moment where I thought I would like her. anyhow I consider myself PG regarding her. As an artist I found her latest albums lacking as those that artists do when they want to finish contracts, very uninspired and just to meet the quota.
I tried to listen to the first part of TTPD, and just as previous works after evermore I can barely diferientiate them. musically speaking the album tried at some points but was very very lacking, for lack of a better phrase it gave me blue balls.
Lirically for me is simple if you are not swiftie and are not into the lore you will not get it, if you don't care about her life you will feel zero attraction to the lyrics, objectively some are laughable.
I will not talk about her on a personal level too much, I will just say their attitude to feed the fire of her fandom is irresponsible.
Her fandom is something that is vicious and toxic, I understand that a lot of people feel seen with her music that is ok, the problem is when the entirety of the personality revolves around liking her and every criticism are deemed as personal.
on her latest album I only kind of liked florida due to florence although it seemed like a song out of the florence album Lungs, so I liked it for nostalgic purposes.
for me I was hesitant on listening to her after midnights and at this points I am ready to move on. I have no intention on following her music anymore unless I hear something really interesting from her just as it happens when I heard cardigan.

You made a good point about shifting her songwriting from equally focused on melodies and lyrics to mostly focusing on lyrics and kind of throwing melodies to the wind on some of these ttpd tracks. Personally, I do tend to agree with the critics most of the time, but an example is that at first I didn't like Midnights because synth pop is NOT my sound, but it has really grown on me a lot recently. I didn't get it at first, but maybe 6 months after the release it's moved into my top 5 TS albums.

  • @regeneratedwitch
    @regeneratedwitch Před měsícem +1

I've been utterly disappointed by Taylor although I've been a fan for over a decade. Lover was ok to me, not my strongest liking nor a hate one.
Midnights is my least favorite album cause the sound/production is boring, sleepy and feels unfinished with no progression. The 70s aesthetic and the mystery surrounding the sound were misleading imo. Speak Now TV was another let down cause of the production. 1989 TV as a whole is the worst thing I've encountered as a TS fan.
While waiting for TTPD, the whole vibe was giving me 1910s-1920s and having no lead single or snippet yet again I thought we'd be getting a sound similar to "the lakes" or Lana's "Young and Beautiful" or "Born To Die" and I was so up for it. Listening to the first 5 tracks was a stab in my back once again for choosing this pile of trash synthpop (which I love when done right, I just don't think Taylor/her collaborators can do). But almost the rest of the tracklist, are amazing, like I love it so much, if we exclude the atrocity "I Can Do It With A Broken Heart". Another example of a song that starts of promising, starting out great and then the chorus comes and I'm like "WTF is this noise?" Then comes the epic "THE SMALLEST MAN WHO EVER LIVED" and I died dead omg.
I took some time to listen to the Anthology so I could absorb the first 16 and damn I loved the majority of them. 11 out of 16 is pretty good imo. With her previous works, I would skip maybe 1-2 per album and most of the times none but the more she does, the more tracks I skip. The Anthology for example has some songs I do love but some others that I find kinda odd. There are some lyrics that in my ears do not go good with the melody as if she's trying hard to fit them in which I never liked.
All in all, this album is high on my list and even the songs I didn't like had strong potential if the production had been different.

artists make art for themselves first and foremost and we should not discourage them from making work when they want to.

We already have so many artists that release hyper relatable surface level songs, why shouldn't us, full album appreciators, have something to call ours?
Anyway. It seems to me she releases albums because she writes a lot, and she writes as a way of coping. I don't think she gives a fuck anymore. Eventually, people will replace her, and she knows it. So she will do whatever she wants for as long as she has.
And about the weak lyrics, honestly, I never experienced a work from any artist that was not kind of cringe at some points: novels, movies, tv series, video games. And poetry, of course, which is usually very hard to interpret when you don't know the context of the author. I think art can be technical at times, and just trial and error at others.
People has been criticizing her a lot over the years 'cause she is very notorious and productive, which makes expectations higher, and so, creates disappointments, even though so many people love her work.
It feels to me that Taylor is a niche artist that popped her bubble, that's all.
