Seinfeld (SYNE-feld) is an american television sitcom created by larry david and Jerry seinfeld. It aired on NBC from 5 July 1989 to 14 May 1998 in nine seasons and 180 episodes. It stars seinfeld as a fictionalized version of himself and focuses on his personal life with three of his friends. and best friend george costanza (jason alexander), ex girlfriend ellen baines (julia louis dreyfus), and their neighbor, cosmo kramer (michael richards) from across the hall.
It is mostly set in an apartment building on manhattan's upper west side in new york city.it has been described as "a show about nothing", often focusing on the nuances of daily life. each episode briefly contains moments of stand up comedy by the fictional jerry seinfeld. often the events of the episode are used for the material.
As a rising comedian in the late 1980s, jerry seinfeld was offered the opportunity to make a show with NBC. he asked fellow comedian and friend larry david to help lay the foundation for a sitcom. the series was produced by west shapiro productions and castle rock entertainment, and distributed by Columbia pictures television.
It was written extensively by david and seinfeld, including larry charles, peter mehlman, greg cavett, carol leifer, david mandel, jeff schaefer, steve coren, jennifer crittenden and tom gammill. a favorite among critics, the series led the nielsen ratings in seasons six and nine, and finished in the top two (along with NBC's ER) every year from 1994 to 1998. only two other shows, i love lucy and the andy griffith show, ended their runs at the top of the ratings.
