One thing gardeners have in common is seeds. We buy them, share them, and need to figure out the best way to store them. I’ve used different storage methods over the years depending on my situation and amount of seeds. It’s important to find a seed organization system that works for you.
Having an effective system for seeds saves you money. If you know what seeds you have, you can make a plan to use them rather than buying duplicate seeds or forgetting about previously-purchased seeds.
An organized seed-saving system also saves you time. Garden planning is much easier when you know which seeds to purchase. Planting-time goes smoother when you have the needed seeds on hand.

Awesome tips. I like to put a little piece of blue masking tape on my cool weather crops so I know immediately without having to read the label which approximate season the seed is for.
That's a great idea! I am going to do that. Thanks for sharing!
Great idea!
Or write with different colored marker :)
I have all of my seeds in zip lock bags, in my grandmothers 1800 steamer trunk. It's my treasure chest. But, I need to go one step further and get these containers. I think they have been in my shopping cart for weeks and I forgot about them, until this video. My favorite part of your system? The holding area! YES! I need a put away bin! I just pile them up and "eventually" get to them. This is perfect! Great video! Thanks.
This is literally the BEST video I have seen on seeds, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for the tips. I love how your videos is straight to the point and well explained!
Thanks!
This is just what I need in January...organize and start planning. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for all the great tips Angela! I store my seeds in a bin from Dollar Tree. I created dividers for veggies and flowers further separated by fall/winter and spring/summer, and sections for herbs and tomatoes. Once open, the seed packets are placed in small envelopes and like you I add the months to plant (from your website or calendar of course 😊) and sometimes other info like depth. I had no idea some seeds can last up to 5 years. I usually toss them. Such good info. I store larkspur and sweet pea in the frig.
Good tip on the larkspur and sweet peas, I forgot to mention that. Thanks!
Love your system. Well-done video. Thank you!
this is the best video so far on handling seeds 👍
I looked for information on four different channels, and her advice is the best.
Glad it was helpful!
FWIW...Amaranth should come before Artichoke. (I can't help it -- former librarian)😁
Love these tips, and your seed storage system is awesome. Thanks!
Right? I need someone patient like you to alphabetize them. I"m just glad it's in the A's and that I got it put back in place!
Thanks for the info. I use binders with baseball card inserts. The packets fit pretty good. I have a flowers, spring, and fall binder. Im sure I will need to expand that as I have quite the love of seeds.
That's a great idea!
Upvoted for including temperature in Centigrade 😉
aghhh... sorry about that. I do in my newer videos, but I didn't always. Thanks for the encouragement to continue.
a lot of helpful informations, thanks a lot❤
I love it! We moved last summer and are gearing up to start our first garden here! I recently got some 3x5 photo album sleeves because I wanted to start printing more pictures. And in the amazon reviews, I saw that people also use them for storing their seed packets! So I used some of those for my seed storage/organization, and put them in a flexible note-binder. There are a few file pockets in the front I can put irregular-shaped things in, with my Clyde's sliding garden planner, and other notes etc. It's easy to add to and rearrange, so it should work fine until I outgrow it (at which point maybe I'll get separate binders for flowers/herbs and veggies). 😄 Fun-fun!
This was SO GREAT!!!! Perfect info! Thank you!
Well organized and informative. Thanks!
Phenomenal organizing system/s! Thanks for sharing your tips and ideas! :-)
Super helpful! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!! This is my next project!
Love these
Great explanation
U have very nicely explained the mistake done by us and how we can overcome .
I stored marigold seeds in a small brown envelope over 1 yr ago at room temp. and they germinated very well when I used them.
Thank you! What an awesome video!
Glad it was helpful!
New subscriber here but I knew I was in the right place when you showed your "plant" and "put away" bins. I find seed packets everywhere that needed putting away and they only made it as far as my pocket
Ha! Welcome!
I just bought some seed storage containers and your tips will help me a lot. Thank you.

Welcome!
Wow great video
Thanks for the visit
Love your site!
Thanks!
I absolutely love love love this arrangement. This will definitely work best for me. I have a dresser that I use for catch all and it will work perfectly. It has nine drawers. One middle row of narrow drawers where I can put a catalog, notes and inventory etc.
Great idea!
Wow! Really amazing tips! I currently use the photo holder and while it is much easier for small scale seed lovers, it can quickly be outgrown 😅😅 love the idea of the drawers. May need to incorporate it on my patio some how 😁
Glad it was helpful!
Glad I found you now I know what to do with my seeds ! if someone will come up with a way to Identify all of them that are not marked I will be on my way to a great garden !
Right?!? I make educated guesses and then plant a couple to find out! It is amazing how the plant identifier apps can identify even young seedlings.
New friend, very helpful video and very informative
Genius
I have a crazy seed storage system…. I have an extensive amount of seeds I have over 500 varieties of tomatoes… Over 100 varieties of beans… 30 types of peas… And then I have about 70 different varieties of micro dwarf tomato plants😂
I have 5 of the photo storage plastic bins ; a Rubbermaid bin and then I also store the long term seed storage in a seeed fridge in a vacuum sealed bag with my own susvival seed packs. Fridge always stays closed. Building those up slowly. My house will be like slavbald😂
Your video was so informative. What labels do you use on your plastic storage cases?
I used these white labels amzn.to/3ttsLL1 to label the name of the type of seed, and these brown labels amzn.to/3tqmi3d to add the planting dates and other information.
Hi! I am new here and curious, what growing zone are you in? Your garden is beautiful. 💛
Thanks. Zone 9b - Low desert of Arizona
Angela, I really love Az, especially the heat down here in Tucson. I usually don’t turn on my air conditioner unless it goes higher than 105. The heat doesn’t brother me at all. So my house is quite warm. Any suggestions on keeping my seeds cooler? I have them in a sealed plastic bin (clear at the moment) in a hall closet. Appreciate advice.
I'd put them in the fridge
Love the holding bins. That is the missing piece for me! Where did you find those little bins?
Try looking in the links in the description. 🙂
Amazon has them: Seed Storage Box with containers: amzn.to/3FtJXCf
🍀🌺🍀🌺🍀🌺👍
I love your arbors! Where were they purchased?
Two Brother's Metal Works made them for me: czcams.com/video/bYxpgkHQvYc/video.html
I just got some of these containers. Where did you get those beautiful rusty looking arbors?

Hi, I am also located in AZ, may I ask where did you found those arches in your garden?
Try going to her blog online. Link is in the description.

where to you get your plastic storage containers displayed in this video?
Amazon: amzn.to/3nJfWIC
What brand and size labels do you use? Where do the get the paper that you put inside the box for more details? Thanks for the info.
I use these labels in my shop: growinginthegarden.bigcartel.com/product/low-desert-seed-planting-stickers
VERY helpful. I realize if I want to become a permaculture gardener, I'm going to need to organize my seeds. By the way, I store most of my seeds in those small plastic $1 tree containers, is that ok? Thanks
Of course, keeping them cool and at an even temperature is key - any type of storage container will work.
HI, what kind of storage containers are the ones in the drawer. i would like to order them online so just now sure what to search for, or what is a good size. thankyou
These are the ones I use: amzn.to/3MB8YSE
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍😍😍👌😍😘
Can you use oxygen absorbers to store seeds
What are the containers called that you used for your holding containers? Can you give me a link to them. great video
Photo boxes amzn.to/3j1Z5BP
I was talking about the square boxes that you called your holding containers. They’re kind of square and oblong. Thanks so much for responding to me. 💜
where do you buy those plastic container's?
Amazon: amzn.to/3tBtNEH
Can seeds be viable after freeze drying ?
I don't think so, but I'm not sure.
I'm pretty new, but I always heard seeds had to breath.
Plastic storage is okay?
Moisture/humidity is the thing you need to avoid, plastic (and glass jars) traps moisture but as Angela is in arizona I imagine the humidity is near zero ? If you use plastic I would also use silica gel to absorb moisture. Here in Thailand where I live the humidity is often around 100%, seeds don't last long once the packet is opened.
It's important to make sure the seeds are fully dry before storing them.
@@Mike_in_Thailand yes, northern middle Tennessee here - also very humid....using paper bags after seeds have dried for several weeks.....they got mold in plastic baggies...
I'm in Australia. I wonder if the plastic storage is suitable here.
Can we use molded seeds❤
I would avoid it if possible.
@@GrowingInTheGarden ok thank you 😊
