- It's time for some proper SEED ORGANIZATION. I'm a definite procrastinator... and slightly disorganized... so this seed storage box is exactly what I needed to stop being such a gardening poser and finally get to it!
Here's the EXACT varieties of everything I'm growing:

Please tell me I'm not alone in my disgusting seed storage situation! So happy to be moving forward in this new year with new organization. It's the small things, am-I-right?
I had the basically exact same video go live today đ
You are so not alone. Iâm sure thereâs an army of us. I love you new seed âhomesâ. Iâm going to try those out also. I have a bazillion collection of herb and wild collected wildflower seeds. They need condos too.
I have a cardboard box that I brought home baby chicks from local feed store in acting as my seed storage containment unit. Haha. Love from Vancouver Island BC
Do you save seeds or do you just buy seeds every year ?
Mine are in a paper bag thatâs falling apart. đ
For those interested and/or avoiding Amazon, those boxes are half the price at Joann or Michaels with a coupon.
Thx!!!
Thank you!
Thatâs where I bought mine!!
I am SOOOOOO GLAD YOU SHARED THIS ALTERNATIVE. THANK YOU. I was going to then I saw this. Let's support these brick.and mortar stores. They are vital to the health of our society and economy even if you have to pay a little more or wait for that trip to town. Amazon has become cancerous monster.
Ordered mine from Michaels last night!
I'm 15 and I'm already addicted to getting seeds, organizing them, and starting seedlings so I can imagine how this addiction will grow as I do LOL
Thatâs so amazing. Good for you!!
Thank you so much!
Check out seed savers for heirloom seeds you can then save every year. I just bought a book on seed saving a month ago, it's The Seed Garden. Best wishes.
Gather, Create, Live with Leslie H. Ooh that's interesting! I'll have to check it out. I have never saved seeds other than flower seeds. I think saving seeds could be super fun!
Juliette tomatoes are amazing to grow in the PNW! đ đ đ
I have the same exact case for my seeds... being a fairly new gardener I decided to organize my seeds by month they need to be planted. That way at the beginning of every new month I grab my seed case and take out that months cartridge and head out to the garden! đ±đ±đ±
That's what I'm going to do! Great idea!
Great idea!
I really like your idea for a preparation box in conjunction with a sowing catalog. I'm going to set up my seeds from an idea I got from another garden channel. She has a dresser with the little boxes labeled in alphabetical order. I am going to designate each drawer to greens, beans, roots, fruit and herbs etc. I have nine drawers to organize and utilize.
Thank you. I left my six year old, washing dishes and watching this video, while I went outside to dump stuff into the compost and love on the outdoor kitty (at 8:15 in winter) . I came back I in and asked her what happened. She said âwell, she ordered trees early because she didnât get them last year and she is replanting themâ. This is pure entertainment for families. This is what ALL channels should aim for.
Iâve been doing Charles DowdingâNo-Digâ method for several years. Weeds are no problem anymore. Thanks for the video! đ±
This is what weâre doing!
I adore Charles Dowding!
I know several no till farmers and I just don't get it. Providing a soft bed for the roots to find their way is key to me!
@@dianajean4837 Because if you provide the right covering for the soil, the soil will be very soft
Us too!
Hi Shaye. I too used to store my seeds alphabetically, then realized how much easier it was to store them according to the date I needed to start the seeds. Makes our homestead so much easier to maintain, and I never miss starting a seed, or reseeding as needed, for succession planting. I can then just rubber band the seed packets together - which saves so much space! Hope you'll give it a try! Happy gardening my friend!
Awesomeness!
I store my seeds by the month they need to be planted as well!
This is my method as well! I am a nurse and when we got our electronic medication organizers our old ones had to go. So mine is in a old pharmacy bin. And it was so funny because I already use pill jars!
I got such a rush when you pulled those trees out of those boxes..đ I have the most excellent nursery in my area. I ordered all my trees from them in October and they are going to call me in the spring when they arrive. I ordered two apricots, two Italian plums, two pears, two apples, some more garlic bulbs to plant when the winter garlic is in, and some winter berries. This is my first year as a homesteader, so I am excited. I bought your book, welcome to the farm, and it is so handy. I also ordered seeds for the giant veggie garden. And of course, I will be getting some bees. Gotta have me some honey. đ
We are planting most of the same fruit trees plus apricots figs! First year starting our garden. We will be doing bees in the next few years! I plan to plant flowers that bees love to encourage them for this year!
Also getting chickens for compost and eggs!
@@trismama1290 thatâs great! I would love some chickens, but I donât think I want to take that on. Iâm almost 63 and I live alone. And I still want to do some travel in the winter. But I will be growing lots of flowers and I am interested in having a tea garden. My property backs onto a forest, so I am going to plant some cherry trees back there for the birds when they go on sale and some really tall apple trees for them too. Arenât you excited for spring?
Itâs so fantastic that youâre using your brother-in-lawâs original music in your videos! đ¶
Itâs really good.
Yes so special!
I take supplements regularly, so i have been saving the silica packs inside for a few years, to keep moisture away from my seeds. Since you're in the PNW, it would be extra-helpful. Lived there five years, EVERYTHING mildews.
And if you're ever concerned they're no longer absorbing moisture, put them in a dehydrator for a day and they'll be good as new
I have two of these storage cases. One issues is that if you have torn open a packet, use a paperclip to ensure no seeds escape. Been there done that. Joy Giles
We ordered our seeds yesterday! This is the first winter we have continued eating from our larder and our garden from last year.
Yeah... I'm not supporting Amazon anymore. Sorry!
Iâm trying to go directly to brandsâ websites to order instead of using Amazon. Itâs a hard habit to kick, though. đŹ
Iâm so happy to see more people saying this! â€ïž
@@DansonforJoy Yes. I will admit that too. It helps that I feel very strongly about it. đȘđșđžđ
I looked at Michaelâs craft store and they have some similar to that and cheaper cause theyâre on sale!
Me either itâs like the little seed if enough little seeds are planted big change can happen! But I love the organization idea and the Elliott homestead! đ„°
Wonderful video. Thank you! To let other viewers know I used the same seed organization as you right before Christmas and got my photo keeper box at Micheals for $14.99. It works well and love how I can find my seeds so quicklyđ
We have yellow tomato seeds we have had over 75 years - we store in the freezer after we have dried - my cousin had his in the freezer for 20 years they were still good !
Hi Iâm a new gardening gal, I want to start preparing because Iâm renting with little space to grow so stocking up on quality seeds seems like what I can do Now. Can I save Any seeds like you in fridge, maybe for a year or two? Any tips to preserve them? Thank you! -Krissy
I have learned from my boss to organize everything with alphabetical order and level it. Love your video. I have been buying seeds here and there. Now I need to organize it too. I didn't know that I can grow olive trees in the container. I am in 7a and 7b plant hardy zone. Last year I have planted blueberry bush, got handful of blueberries but love the plants which change the color of the leaves seasonally. I just bought the pomegranate plant and can't wait to put outside as soon as spring comes. My grandpa used to bring pomegranate fruits every time we got sick.
I lived in a big city in an apartment for 20 years with sunny windows but tried and did grow vegetables, flowers whatever I found around. Now I have a big yard and have trying to grow some for the families. Watching you and other homestead growers inspired me to go to the garden and grow.
Bravooo for using " no-dig "method by Charles Dowdingâ.Itâs so fantastic method and results too. Greetings from Croatia
For larger packages (such as beans) try Christmas ball Tupperware organizers.
Great idea!
As interested as I am in the content (and I am) , I find myself looking at the backdrop of your lovely hone. Canât wait for the next series of room toursđ€
I LOVE the fact that you just pot these all up in your house... dirt and all... I think my husband would have a panic attack if i started potting anything in my kitchen. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! :)
This way of your new garden planning reminds me of the Never Sink Farm - work smarter, not harder! Bravo!
As a bonified âadultâ, (50 years old) I can verify that being one is highly overrated.
AMEN Sista!!!
Yay! So excited for new videos :) love the gardening ones!! They are my favorite.
So excited! And a longer video! Score!
Itâs so good to see a video from you all!! Have missed watching your videos.. love to follow your story and see how things are going on the homestead. Thanks from Tennessee
Great planning and seed system. đ Canât wait to see the harvest.
That was so wonderful watching and I really enjoyed the unboxing of the trees.
I have been using these for a few years now. I garden in raised beds on 1/8 acre suburban back yard. I have 12 raised beds, a shed, a pergola, a massive inground pool and a pool house. A small greenhouse and a couple ground beds on a curve berm. These containers have been indispensable to keep my seeds straight. I hope you love them as mush as i do.
I LOVE tidy organization, and this method of storing your seeds looks excellent! đ
I need to get on organizing my seeds as well! Can't wait to see the new garden!!
Thank you so much Shaye! I was hoping you'd make some seed videos! Love your content so much... Sending love
I see a conservatory room addition in your future. All the tropical loveliness.
Yay! So glad to know the musicians in the video! Thanks for that!
Also
I have loved that you are using your families original music for the videos. :D love love love
I love this! I used the exact photo box to organize my flower seeds last year! Canât wait to see the new garden progress!
OMG, Sun Gold tomatoes are amazeballs, literally candy. I took some cuttings off my plants the end of last year & have been growing them in my garden window, just waiting to plant heaps of them this year.
Yay no dig! I'm so excited you're going to try it out!
Totally ordered this organizer last week, I can't wait to sort out my seeds! Its an exciting season upon us and preparation is key!! Praying blessings over your familyđ„°
I ordered the vinyl - what a beautiful song. And appreciate your videos always.
We're saving prescription bottles for seeds. Of course they will be washed before we use.
Thatâs what I use. Works great.
Thank you . I'm in zone 4 B but so nice to be thinking of the gardens.
Lost of love and THANKS for being so amazing sharing your BLOGS about how gardening LOVE LOVE
I absolutely love this idea
So exciting to have trees and organized seedsâ€
Love your seed container. I always find Amazon are brilliant in searching for stuff you need for garden accessories. Another wonderful video â€
Very nice âșïž I hope you love the no dig garden. I really love this method for flowerbeds. The trees are so exciting! I hope you get olives đ
I've been using the photo storage boxes for a few years. I love it. I actually have 3 boxes - 2 for my veggie seeds and 1 for herbs and flowers.
I really like this format
I did this last year so very handy-dandy, I love being organized in the photo boxes.
My husband was good enough to label them all. Love it as I can take out a single box to plant and my seed package won't blow away.
I loved this longer one. I'm sure the trees will thrive for you. I think I saw these containers on Laura's channel over at Redeeming the Roberts . So handy, I still haven't got around to it. I've got an ancient port with ancient tins storage for seeds. I really need these. Thank you for sharing xxoo
I am also so excited about doing âno digâ this year, Iâm buying a wood chipper too! I am definitely going through my seeds ASAP and thank you for the organizing tips! Mine are about like how yours were in the big tin! đâ€ïž
Just did some pre-spring cleaning. Organizing makes our brains happy đ
I can just feel my hands in the dirt...I can't wait until spring. Thanks for this lovely video.
Seed organization is very important...less waste. Great video, love the trees. God Bless
I love that box! We bought 2 of them last year and they are the best thing EVER! We have on box with all clear containers and the other one is filled with multi-color containers.
I have this container, bought it last year and itâs great!
believe me, those help so much! It also made ordering so much easier becuase I could see really quickly what I had run out of! Very easy to organize and stay on top of!
I use the same containers as you for my seeds. Have been using them for a few years now. I started out with the seeds in alphabetical order, but I have found it more helpful to organize them by when I start the seeds or plant them out, instead of alphabetically. It makes it easy for me to look in the box and know where I am in my seed starting and planting. I move from Spring to Summer to Fall planting easily without forgetting anything along the way (mostly).
Thanks for sharing Shaye!
I bought one of those at Michaelâs and I couldnât remember why. Thanks for reminding me!
I got one for Christmas two years and couldn't figure out what the heck to do with it.
That plastic case is so handy. I found 2 at my thrift store. Great for craft supplies too!!
Absolutely love this.. Super neat!
i love this i have the multi colored about 7 yrs it was a game changer you are going to love it. i have 4 hey i love seeds. lol
I my seeds in these photo boxes too! I love this system. It works great.
I just ordered two fruit trees as well, you inspired me! Thanks for sharing all your lovely ideas.
I did this years ago with the same cases. One for herbs, one for flowers and one for veggies. BEST thing I've done as a gardener in years! There's no getting around the bulk seed though. I use vintage bread boxes for bulk seed and bulbs. Cheers Shaye!
I have never wanted anything to start a trend so bad, fingers crossed for seed organization videos to take off in 2021 đ€
Last year they were a trend, I think. Everyone was doing this video.
Micheals craft has the photo storage bin for $14, I picked up a few ! My seeds needs some love đ€Ł
I started using the photo organizer for seeds last winter. I love it! I also have a small plastic flip top organizer for seeds that I am gearing up to use. That way if I accidentally leave them out, they don't get ruined with rain or anything.
I think every gardener in the UK has the seed storage box, they sure are great... đ Love watching your vlogs, great content.. đ
Olives, lemons , grapefruit tree are growing beautifully here in South Australia where l live! Good to be reminded about the fact that we don't have frost (or barely)and can garden around the year but how precious the gardening season is for cool climate gardeners is! I wish for more rain though,we barely have rain for several months in summer,it means a lot of watering to achieve the lush garden look!
Love your channel, always looking eagerly under subscriptions for a new video!!!đ€đ
So inspiring! All my seeds are stuffed into a ziplock in my fridge. Lol. Just ordered for this year including âMarquetteâvines. Finally doing the hard thing re-building the micro vineyard I once had. Homemaker chic addict here. So much so that my girls (dairy goats) know your voices and come to the barn because Iâm often playing your podcast while I do feeding and milking. Thank you both for sharing.
I love the sun golds grow them every yr I growled the Amish paste this yr and was very happy with it. They have less seeds as I have learned the seeds and skin is bad for arthritis
I love that organizer, you can also organize them by categories, like root vege, herbs, flower, and vege plants. You can even take it to summer and winter plants.
I have the same setup. I decided to organize them in two separate containers by cool weather and warm weather crops. So far so good.
I saw this idea on gardener scott and pinterest recently! Love it. I just so happen to have one of these from when I used to make jewelry so I guess it's going to have a new purpose.
Iâm so stoked youâre going NO DIG!!!
I've been wanting an olive and meyer lemon tree and you have inspired me to find them this spring! My seed storage is a mail holder on my desk with the seed packets are bunched up in the slots LOL! Love your organization system!
Thankyou so much for the link to Jeremy's music. Totally beautiful easy listening music, i have it on all day haha. xx
A suggestion on adding 1 more tomato is the Baker Creek Thornburn's Terra-Cotta. Lasw year I decided that we were going to grow as many tomatoes as possible. We had 152 tomato plants. My goal was enough preserved for 2 years and determine which varieties we wanted to grow / make space for every year for both fresh eating and preserved forms. We grew 2 plants of each kind we chose. Our favorites which will be in every garden we have are Sungold Cherry, Orange Strawberry (Botanical Interests), Giant Paste, Jersey Devil, Cherokee Carbon, Cherokee Purple and Thornburn's Terra-Cotta. The 2 stars being Sungold and Thronburn's. Prior to last year Cherokee Purple was the one "we can't do without" tomato. It took me 3 year to order Thornburn's because $5/pkg! I am glad I finally broke down last year.
Great video thank you for sharing all you learn!
I have been gardening for more than 20 years and this is the first year I have put any energy into seed organization and saving. So I guess we are on the same path. I live up in Ile des Chenes, Manitoba in Canada. Thanks for sharing your experiences with everyone it makes me happy to know there are other people out there with similar interests during this isolating time we are in.
Oh wow thanks for doing this. I just found the motivation to organize my seeds too. đ
So funny! We are The zone 7a and are in southern central Oklahoma! â€ïž Also been using those.boxes for my seed storage for years! Love them so much!
Does seeds ever mold in the plastic containers? Thx đ
@@kimmurphy6864 I've been using them for about two and a half years now and I have never had seeds mold in there
Do you need to store these boxes in the fridge, or where do i put my organized seeds?
@@cayceewhite5536 I don't store them in our refrigerator. Shaye may store hers in her cold room though. I keep mine in a cabinet in our laundry area or even just up on a shelf.
I love seed videos like this!!!!!!!! I was hoping you would do one sharing all of the seeds that are your favorites! đ
Clicked the link SO FAST đ
Thanks for the link! I am going to buy one. My seeds are all shoved into plastic bags in a big box that is overflowing! Great idea.
I think every gardener ordered one of those containers this year lol. I did and I love it!
May I also add that The Victory Garden Cookbook (it's hard to find, but worth it!) is a GEM. Many of us gardeners/homesteaders didn't grow up eating beets, arugala, fresh herbs, turnips, etc. and don't quite know what to do with them. This cookbook gives SO many recipes for "odd" crops, how to grow them, how to store them, ferment and make recipes with them. Blessings and happy gardening all!
Use these containers too! Love them! đ
I use these for my seeds. They are wonderful! I have 3 sets (6 boxes). 2 are colored which I use for my flowers and the other 4 are clear which I use for veges and herbs. I think you'll love them.
Thatâs how I organize my seeds also :)
I would like to thank you for your video on the bed sheets. I purchased a set and they are GREAT. I hate throwing money away on cheep junk and would rather pay more for quality that will last (I hate re purchasing things). These sheets are not cheep but well worth the price for the quality you get. I can see these sheets lasting many years. Thanks again!!!!!!
I got one of these last year and it did make me feel really grown up lol!
This vlog is very inspiring - if you think your seed storage was hap hazard, mine is terrible -paper bags in the green house. Now I am going to make the effort. Start early. I love your respect for plants and what they give. I hear you on light pots - doing that too...terracotta pots stay on the courtyard, where I do not have to move them around so much. Wishing you a grand harvest in months to come!
Excellent video. I love the seed storage idea. Mine are all in an ice cream container.
Those trees look great! We also ordered ours in January, and still missed out on some of the things we were hoping to get.
I also have already bought my seeds for the year, also from Johnnyâs. We buy from them because theyâre 40 miles from our home. And weâre establishing on a new area to allow from the pigs and larger poultry flock.
Yep, got one of those last spring. Handy as heck. I got one on the clearance at Michaels for wayyyyy cheap.
Iâve been using those same bins for my seeds for a couple years, itâs a game changer. You can get them at Michaels or Hobby Lobby with a coupon for much cheaper than Amazon.
