While your children enjoy Summer reading, don’t forget that we should be doing it ourselves!!! Whether it is a cookbook, a fun novel, or a book of poetry, I try and find a little time every day to enrich my mind as well. (It does help that my kids are older). Lovely thoughts, Shea!

Do you let your kids make decisions about what is going to be served during their kitchen day? Or do they just help and learn? I would love to do something like this with my 9-year-old son but unless he is head cook and experimenting with ingredients and making his own recipes he doesn’t want to have anything to do with it! 🤷‍♀️

Great video. My teacher husband used to get our children to work on a skill or 2 over the summer holidays. I remember my son picking juggling one year, practicing his afl kicking (aussie football) another year. My daughter picked crochet and walking handstands. What they picked was always interesting and by the end of summer their skills were noticably improved.

I feel the same way about early morning gardening too because it’s very hot where we live in CA

Your schedualing and organizing sound amazing... we are little more half-arsed but out in the garden and having fun/learning with the kiddo makes the dirty house tolerable and acceptable in my mind!

I love the notion of savoring the season as well as the food produced during that time of the year. There is something so wonderful in looking at my meal plate and being able to tell what time of the year is by the food on it.

You are doing a great job Shaye. I'm impressed with the way you have scheduled all these things including the fun activities for you family and teaching the kids to cook which is so important. Both of my sons are excellent cooks. Discovering a childs gifts and abilities and promoting and encouraging those things is important. Thier interests can be so different from their parents too. My husband and I didn't grow up with computers and both son's excelled with this. It's a good thing because I needed a lot of help along the way.

When my children were young ( I fear I’m much older than you) we didn’t have much money. I took this as an opportunity rather than a limit. Picnics in the back yard under a large shade tree, finding unusual rocks at the river, camping and fishing and just enjoying the outdoors. People forget, you don’t need money to have fun. Pop some popcorn and layout a large blanket. Then kick back and watch the stars. My guys have never forgotten our experiences together. So go on, learn to catch a frog or grow a plant….you’ll be building something more special than you could ever imagine. Be well❤

I am in Johannesburg south Africa.....I am really going to try this as I have been having difficulty in purchasing good tasting bacon for a while now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge . Also how does one cold smoke bacon please? I think it would be the right time for me to make this now as we are in the middle of winter here withe temps of 8 to 15 °. C and we have dry winters here.

Lovely cake. I so appreciate how you scraped out the bowls. I know it may be silly, but I hate when bakers leave so much in the dish. They obviously have never gone without. Btw-I took your suggestion about a dry starter a while ago and I love it! So much less waste.
