There are three main categories of gender that encompass the broad strokes of human identity. They are Male, Female, and Non-Binary. Each category contains a Venn Diagram that resembles a kaleidoscope of all the different ways that people experience that gender, which include trans, intersex, agender, gender fluid, and so on into infinity.
Furthermore, the broad categories are kinda like the colour spectrum, and so bleed into each other around the edges, like how yellow and red form orange. This accounts for tomboys and femboys, as well as the infinity of ways that everyday people don't conform to the stereotypes of masculinity and femininity.
It is an endlessly complex topic that has been written since the dawn of humanity, and it doesn't even touch sexual or romantic attraction, which are their own separate infinite kaleidoscopes. If you want to avoid confusing people, just stick to explaining the broad three categories and handle the nuances as they come.
(and maybe buy a kaleidoscope. They're a good visual aid for the complexity of the topic)
