  • New MG4 EV full review - the cheapest 300 mile electric family car. But is it any good? Jonny - like a lot of electric car enthusiasts - has been keen to see whether this new ground-up MG can credibly take the fight to the VW ID.3, Cupra Born and veterans like Renault's Zoe and Nissan Leaf.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
This is a near 300 mile EV that starts at £25,995 (minus any gov grants). Two battery sizes are available - 64kWh and 51kWh (the latter has a WLTP of 218 miles), with 7.9 and 7.7 0-62 times respectively. MG are throwing thew gauntlet down to Kia and Hyundai with a similar 7-year warranty, but they are styling the MG in a way which could make the historic brand desirable once again beyond the bargain hunters.

I wasn't interested in MG, just happened to pass the dealer after test driving Tesla's. I ended up with an MG5.
Now I know that it's no Tesla and it's ugly, but it's not half the car either but it was half the price. If I had water in light fittings on my £24,000 MG I would take it back to the dealer, Tesla put their £50,000 car out as a demo.
Really fancy an MG4 with the dual motors, what a street sleeper and how many embarrassed super car owners!

That is praise indeed for the MG5. Until the MG4 appeared, the MG5 would be at the top of my shopping list if I ever go full EV.
Chinese MGs are used as Taxis for years. One even appeared frequently as a Taxi on the popular TV Series Doc Martin. That being an MG6 1.8 Petrol Turbo. According to some reports, MG6s used as taxis 200,000 miles is not unusual. The MG 6 is a far better car than many would have you believe for some reason when they first appeared on these shores. The Chinese having bought the IPRs of the MG Marque for relatively buttons, made an excellent job of their version of Rover's 1.8 turbocharged K-Series.
Johnnie's enthusiasm comes over strongly for the MG4. Looks like I shall have to see for myself, ideally with actual "hands on" experience rather than the opinions of others who sometimes allow their bias and prejudice to distort and mislead.

The thing I added was a spare wheel and tint to the rear glass. Funnily enough we had a opportunity to hire a ID4 on hols and we were all pleased to be back in the ZSEV after, funny software in the VW and far more plasticity surfaces than a VW £50k should have. The then UK Government called in the receivers and unless news of the fake variety, acted to torpedo any chnace of a joint venture with a far Eastern manufacture on the lines of the previous and successful Honda~ Austin Rover Group Partnership . MG-Rover was a Private Company then and thus did not align with their ideology... A harmful to the Nation one and ongoing. I voted for that shower three times! Never again.
Mug Brits sold the remnant IPRs of the much asset stripped former massively asset rich Rover Group then known as MG-Rover for peanuts to the Chinese owners of the marque. Who have used it well Worldwide with increasing sales even here in the UK..
Yes, Rover group asset stripped by the Bavarian outfit ( Foreign owners of the once massively asset rich Rover Group ) who needed TWO small cars in their otherwise Gas Guzzler Model line up or be penalised heavily by the EU constraints and guidelines. Soon after acquiring Rover Group for relatively little, they sold off the JLR assets. JLR sold to FOMOCO for more than they paid for the whole sheebang unless those figures quoted were fake news. The huge R&D costs of those two small cars BMW set against the Rover accounts to demonstrate what they called, here I use their words. "The English Patient.. "
Millions of Brits bought into that Bovine Excrement and still do to this day!
Then if that was not enough, sold off the remnants which became known as MG-Rover for a tenner so escaping the massive redundancy costs had the company been wound up then.
Mug UK Governments still see foreign ownership of so many aspects of the UK and its various assets as "Foreign Investment" .. often given massive under the table taxpayer financial inducements to set up here with access to greenfield sites denied to many "In House" British concerns. Most like Honda warned when it suited them, not the UK, they will up sticks and leave. Give credit to Honda company, well before any mention of an IN-OUT EU Referendum, they told us that, Yet cue some of the more poisonous sectors of UK Main Stream Media blaming the OUT voters for that. FAKE NEWS since denied by the honourable Honda Motor Company of Japan.
As a Nation we seem determined to fall for the three card trick time and again. Many Brits form queues still to pay over the odds for BMWs and other foreign built Automotive product. That adds to the UK impressive increases in exports. Yes exports of many worthwhile UK careers and jobs straight out of the country ... The USA is not the only place having "Rust Belts"
Still they come in their thousands daily to treat the UK Taxpayers as mugs.
It's now twenty years since I ordered and bought the last MG new, one of several over the decades. In so doing sustaining good jobs and careers for the good folks of the Midlands at Longbridge. Still have the last MG I bought new and the new Rover Metro in the family fleet bought twenty nine years ago. I can no longer have the pleasure of doing that ever again. I can of course buy a nice new MG tomorrow like several folks down my street have done. All tell me they are delighted with their new MGs when I ask them. Nothing wrong with that except, those nice new MGs should have been built and manufactured by the folks of the UK's Midlands as was once the case many years ago!
Only in the UK .. :sigh:
If having read so far, you get the impression I have strong feelings about so many of the wrong decisions those we entrust to this Nation's well being have failed us by, you'd be quite correct. Worse still, it's ongoing. I am far from alone in having these strong views and those who feel the same way or rapidly increasing in number.
Many here could learn from those folks across the other side of the Atlantic. Make a start with the following Mission Statement.

I bought an ex demo MG5 Exclusive last October - my previous vehicle was a 2004 Range Rover with LPG conversion - lovely vehicle but began costing lots of money at each successive MOT. The MG5 has, so far proved to be faultless - the air conditioning is the best that I've experienced in any vehicle that I've owned in the past. Its completely unobtrusive in operation. I generally drive in 'economy' mode and max 'regen' mode. Recently, in the hot weather. it was returning 4.6 miles per kwh - I pay 21p per kWh on economy 7 so circa 4.7 pence per mile. The 12 month service cost £70 and that included cleaning inside and out and took about an hour. Have been thoroughly impressed with the car.

The MG4 looks great, I have a 5 year old 30KWHr Nissan Leaf. It's perfect except for 2 things .... range, and the crazy Chademo charger. That mean I have 2 cars.

I enjoyed your unbiased appraisal of the MG4 Johny, and have to say that I was quite impressed which is very strange because I am not an EV fan! I know we responsible citizens should all be doing our bit for the environment, but from where I stand there are still too many obstacles and potential problems with buying and owning an EV! The biggest concern that most have, as I have learnt from friends is, 'charging', and how long it can take if a supercharger is not available! No matter, the MG4 is very nice and may have swayed me if it had been available in early 2022 when I traded in my old Jag for a newer one. Keep up the good work.

How many rhd MG4s can they import, not nearly enough I imagine. Good review, Jonny.

Not only did I enjoy it, but Jonny, you tapped into many of my feelings about the new SAIC incarnation of MG. The biggest point is that you gave it a fair chance, judged it purely on what it is and does and didn't just pigeon hole it and spend the rest of the review trying to find fault or abusing it.
I'm absolutely intrigued by these cars and am coming around to the idea that when our old 53 plate CR-V finally gives up (or I give up maintaining it) that a ZSEV might be an option, or better still, downsize to one of these. - the Trophy gets a raised floor in the boot as an extra option. Why you'd want to lose the extra space is beyond me, but hey, whatever you're into!
    - the Trophy also gets storage slots on the back of each front seat for rear passengers. Minor item but useful.
    - tow rating of 500kg across the range: excellent!
    - no roof rack: the one item that stops it from becoming a direct competitor to the Niro EV.
Lastly, and related to the last statement: the new Niro EV is €11,000 MORE than the Trophy MG4 in Ireland. Wow......

I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure there’s more to battery degradation than just charge discharge cycles. Those are just a quick ball park spec to give a rough idea of battery lifespan. The rate you charge and discharge the battery’s makes a huge difference. If you have a smart metre at home, you’ll probably see that most of the time your home is drawing 100s of watts, rather than a few kilowatt (a few thousand watts) which is what an EV consumes whilst cruising and even more when accelerating. Drawing power at a lower wattage general results in less heat. Roughly speaking, less heat = less degradation, so I can’t see people using there EV as a home battery make much difference to the lifespan of the pack. Especially considering you’d have to be trying really hard to drain the entire pack in a day just from your home.
Like I say, I’m not an expert. Just a nerd whose been following EVs since 2014 😊
Edit: Just adding to my initial comment. For context on how much energy you use in a home,p vs an EV uses driving. Our Hyundai Kona takes about 12 hours to charge from empty to full drawing 7 kW most of the way. Again, roughly speaking (you need to account for losses in electricity transmission etc) that means to drain the entire 64 kWh battery in the Kona in a day, you’d need to sustain a 7 kW draw for around 9 hours. You are very unlikely to draw anything near that for half and hour, let alone 9.

Not just amusing but representing the comfort that the car style evokes. Magical bit of observation and editing. Maybe it's time for driver selectable indicator sounds! I would definitely consider this car.

Hi Jonny. Just about to order a white SE standard range so your excellent review helped a lot. One thing that reviewers are missing though is the battery chemistry for the standard range (LFP) and long range (NMC). As most EV users actually do relatively short journeys, the standard range LFP that can happily charge from 0% to 100% all day long would generally be sufficient for every day use. Even using fake WLTP figures, 100% of 218 miles is 218 !!. However where the long range NMC battery should only be charged to 80% on a routine basis, you end up with a similar "actual" WLTP figure of 224 miles (281 X 80% = 224 miles).Charging an NMC battery to 100% on a regular basis apparently damages the cells. Also the LFP battery has a far greater charge cycle count than the NMC battery. When I fist test drove the MG4 I too thought that a long range SE was the sweet spot but now i'm not so sure. Unless you are regularly going to do road trip level miles, I can't see any reason why the standard range SE would't be the sweet spot for most peoples daily needs. The fake WLTP situation has just replaced the fake MPG figures for ICE cars and i think manufactures dealers and indeed reviewers are missing the opportunity to finally inject some true clarity into the actual mileage that EVs will do and in fact what EV drivers are doing on a daily basis. Unless that is i'm completely missing something. Anyhooo, thanks for a great informative video.

I do tend to agree with you. I’ve had an MG5 for two years and it was a wonderful car. I’ve traded in for an MG4 SE standard range. It’s a lovely vehicle. Totally different from the MG5. However, so far my miles per KWH in the cold weather have been a bit disappointing at 2.8. I’m sure this will improve massively as temperatures rise. For most people, the standard range car is more than enough. It is very rare that I do a trip of 200 miles. When I have done, rapid charging hasn’t been a problem using reliable chargers like Instavolt. I’m not sure that for most people, it’s worth paying £3.5K more for a long range battery. I may be wrong, but, not for me.

Great review Jonny as ever. In answer to your question in the video, i would much prefer to drive something like this vs an ID3 at the price point. If i was going down the EV route (which i will be in about 18 months), MG is a brand i'd give serious consideration to. It's great value for money by the looks of it, decent design and the interior really does it for me. As someone who has a few other cars for my weekend fun, i could well see myself in this as a daily.
Like you mention at the end, me 8 years ago would have gone for a badge that looks cool (Audi, BMW), but i'm just not convinced by those brands when it comes to EVs or quality anymore. I think i'd now prefer a top spec "lesser" badge than a rubbish spec "top" badge.

One thing seems odd - the standard range model appears to have a slightly lower miles/kWh efficiency compared to the long range. China is not yet strong enough, there is still a chance for a future where democracy and choice remains dominant. If you make the right decisions now the world still has a chance for a democratic future. You might be silly enough to think you have no choice now. This means you do not really understand what it is like to live under a truly totalitarian regime. In the 1980's women who became pregnant for a second time were dragged by police in to makeshift hospitals and forced abortions were performed. No one could stop the state doing this.
