  • New MG5 EV full review - the 250 mile electric family car. It is hard to believe that in this world of SUV and Crossover EVs that no one other than the Chinese MG brand has decided to build an electric estate car. Jonny Smith drives this new version, which is facelifted and tech-lifted from the best selling previous version (which is currently Britain's 2nd most popular estate and the UK's 5th best selling EV).
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
The £31,000 MG5 uses the previous car's 61.1kWh battery pack, delivering 154bhp (115kW) and 260nm to the front wheels, and providing up to 250 miles WLTP range. It will rapid charge up to 87kW, meaning 10-80% charge in 35 mins.

MG Krill Sifter - they really missed a trick with that name! Great review but why oh why do you have to have pimp tints on so many cars these days if you don't want poverty spec. My kids aren't that ugly...... and an EV without heated seats in the base model - madness.

    • @davidcolin6519
      @davidcolin6519 Před rokem +13

As far as the heated seats are concerned; not everybody really wants them, or lives in a cold country. I've had several cars with them, but never, ever used them (but I live in Spain). I was also in the uk recently, my hire car had them... but I still didn't use them.
And they are an added cost that quite a few really don't need.

@@davidcolin6519 I have heated seats in my old Jaaaag - and I do use them, from time to time (well, the one I'm sat in anyway!) and they're great, except when you really REALLY want them is the instant you jump into your cold car on a cold frosty morning and everything's freezing cold.... they take so long to warm up, that the heater is already working by then.
Actually, one of the things that's really got me keen to go electric (other than the cost of running aforementioned Jaaag), is the idea I can use an app to pre-warm & defrost the car while I'm having a nice cup of coffee in the morning...

Hi Jonny - thanks for the review - I was especially interested since I bought an ex-demo MG5 in September 2021 - it was originally registered in March of that year. My previous vehicle was a 2004 Range Rover Vogue with an LPG conversion - I'd never have been able to afford to run it without that!! I have been thrilled to bits with the MG - never get out of Eco mode and use max Kers and in the summer was getting on average 4.6 miles per kWh. Since I'm retired my annual mileage is around 7000 and although I had a home charger fitted I hardly ever use it - the 'granny' charger that came with the car is adequate - I have 'economy 7' so only charge it overnight (00:20 - 07:20) and that adds about 20% to the battery charge. The boot capacity makes fitting my wife's mobility scooter easy with room to spare. The heating and ventilation is the best that I've had on any vehicle - it's warm straight away without having to wait for a petrol/diesel engine to warm up on winter days and window demisting is superb. The ease of driving makes going on journeys a joy and sitting in traffic jams makes one a bit smug since you're not wasting fuel!!

I’ve had a 2011 Mazda 6 Sport estate for nearly 7 years and I adore it. For 5 of those years it’s had a Thule top box on it. The rear seats are permanently folded flat (properly flat as well) and we have a double bed (two single Vango self inflating mattresses, sleeping bags and duvet) which we can lay totally flat out on with space to spare. Loads of space for us both and our border collie for a quick bolt up to the Lakes, Peaks, Snowdonia, Highlands. I had an RB5 Impreza for many years, and so much fun when the time was right, but the Mazda offers so much more, more of the time. It’s changed my perception of what a car can be. I don’t care about the status, I don’t care about the badge. I’ve got to get rid of it within the next couple of years to keep my car allowance, and I’m struggling to see what I’d replace it with. The MG is so close to being perfect. Similar size, virtually the same performance….but the rear seats don’t fold totally flat. And that’s a big deal for estate owners.

Great review as always! As an MG5 LR pre-facelift owner, you can tell that image is not critical for me 😅 It's a great car in so many ways but, okay, not the best out there! This facelift version does a lot to improve the car, although the roof rails on my Dec 2021 car also take 75kgs (upgraded for the LR version). Whilst the 17" alloys on the new version look much better, it's a shame that it reduces the range by 20 miles.

I seriously considered one of these last year (old model of course) to replace our Dacia Logan Stepway (great cheap car). However several things put me off at the time:
    1. Could not confirm if the roof rails can be used for top boxes (essential).
    2. Could not confirm a Towbar can be fitted for bike-carrying (not towing).
    3. It’s a bit small compared to the Dacia - boot isn’t that big for an estate really.
It did drive well though - plenty of performance. Not sure if any of the above have been addressed in the new model but open to persuasion!

    Nice one.
I think that considering the the aerodynamics in play, and the EV future we are entering, EV estates need to be more mainstream.
SUV configurations are just not efficient. This was somehow tolerable in petrol vehicles, but in EV's aerodynamics play an even bigger role. I'd rather use the extra energy carrying cargo and people than punching a square hole in the the air when I am on my own anyway mostly.
I also find SUV's to generally be overly pretentious somehow. Sort of "I'm so important, I need a shipping container to move me around". I feel a bit uncomfortable climbing out of my friends SUV (Chevy Traverse). Almost as if anyone watching would find my arrival to be a bit of an anticlimax after all the fuss and drama of parking the damn thing. How much metal do you need to move you around? If you actually do need the extra space, why not an estate in 90% of urban use cases? Sure, some people need that SUV height - but most people just don't I reckon.
    We need more EV estates.

I'd totaly daily that. I'd need to treat it to some lowering springs and some nicer wheels though. I'd much rather have that than an SUV. Nice review as always Jonny.

I nearly bought the previous mg 5 to replace my diesel megane tourer but we're busy building a house and living in an apartment with no off street parking so no way to charge at home. I going to place an order for the new one and hope the house is done by the time the car's ready

The MG4 SE SR has LFP batteries. Not as roomy as the MG5, but not bad for a hatchback. Range is only 218 miles, but the battery may last a million miles.

The MG5 , the vauxhall astra estate of the 80,s they where everywhere , well done MG to see a market gap where drivers want a small practical estate.
Great shout out for James and Kate , he's given his MG5 some seriously hard work in 6 months 👏 see his review here czcams.com/video/c7-vNqs80so/video.html

Quite an honest to goodness decent car! Not exciting but decent. These seem to get good reports for efficiency too, in the EV world. Im kicking myself a bit as i could have had a brand new one of these about 18 months ago ( before the market went crazy) for £18k....what new car (EV or not) can you get for £18k now?! Not a lot!

  • @MatthewJohnCrittenden

MG are doing great things to drive EV costs down and real-world driving ranges up. MG 4 & 5 are really stirring up my interest in EV's. I even like the very distracting luminous lime green "look at me" trainers. Proper bobby dazzlers! 😁😁

Have just acquired an old model 5. Having a small family and a large dog (Greyhound) it’s ideal. Just finished a family holiday. Boot is large enough to dedicate one side to the dog and the other to luggage. Would hate to try it in one of these SUVs with their tiny, high, boots.
