    its good to see this ,, people have no idea just how old backtracking has been around, we've been doing this when Cassettes were around.i perform live using backtracks , and get alot of flack for using this technique, to this day
    Im now using Logic pro for mixing and audio, and record into and digital source,and put my click ( which by the is the COMPLETE SONG AS WE DO IT ),with MY VOICE giving counts for changes, endings, breakdowns etc..) which only the drummer and musicans can hear. and i use to use (my laptop, and ipod) as well, but now just have Track 1 with the click track for the band, and vocals on track 2, and keys on 3 and horns on track 4 going direct to my mixer.
    thanks it was fun watching. keep it up,

    We started with click tracks, not to be any fancier, but simply to help us hold the beat, and get tighter together as a group. It helped us be more consistent and disciplined in our playing, and helped us get through those places where we naturally wanted to start speeding up.

    I love clicks and tracks. They really help tighten up the band and give a fuller sound if we're missing a guitar player or just want a little extra something like strings or synth. The only thing I don't like that this guy does is track vocals. I don't have any spiritual disagreement or think he's cheating, I just don't like it. But there is no reason why working this way should ever quench or hinder the holy spirit. And you can keep it organic and go back to verses and choruses by using a track pad that takes you back to wherever you want to in the song and gives you a little count in. This is not cheating, regardless of the hoopla comment I read further down. As long as your heart is still right with God and you're not trying to make the service an overproduction and you know your job is to lead people into worship and create an atmosphere for God to do his work.

    Back in 1998 I used to do something similar with only my Roland xp60. Record loops make then a pattern then output via click out to drummer so he can stay on tempo and the loops and me going live via regular outputs. Was fun. Back then this technique was known as "playing with sequence" instead of whats known today as Tracks. Then pl stared doing the same with portastudios like tascam..roland vs1880 with full tracks..basically the same thing is done today with Ableton but instead a computer it was a portastudio with all the tracks divided by channel ready to mix .

      Jim Campbell IT's similar, but not quite the same thing. You absolutely could not do the kinds of on-the-fly changes with something like a Roland MC500 that you can easily do w/ Ableton Live, or apps like LaunchPad.

    I think it's a very useful tool this metronome thing, and we use as a band. But i also think that as a tool, i don't HAVE to use, if i don't want to.. and if we don't use click tracks we still can make records and record live, we've done it before, no problem. I think it depends what i want to do. Anyway, thanks for this webinar, it's very useful to have this info.

    •  Před 9 lety

      daniel kinney don't get me wrong... i'm not against click tracks or loops... they are fantastic, even when you do post editing, and so... BUT, the lack of click track isn't necesarily mean poor performance and vice versa... that's what i say

How do I do that or how is it communicated to accomplish that "freedom"?

    Hello I Am a bass player playing backing tracks with my band. I just have a question how can I use a mic to talk to the engineer and my band through an in ear system I just would like to know how to route the mic so that the band and engineer hear me but not the house

    • @drewkeith8402
      @drewkeith8402 Před 10 lety

      Hey Erik!
      It will mainly depend upon what is running in the back and how many spare channels there are. The best way would be send a mic to the back and add it to on-stage monitors and to the engineer's mix. There is a very complicated to do that with ableton, but a separate channel would be best.

    • @DavidAnthonyFlores
      @DavidAnthonyFlores Před 10 lety +1

      You send it to the board like regular but you send it to the auxes and not to the mains. With that, don't make it more complicated than it has to be. Send a line to the back of the board, and make sure not to send it to the mains, and click the auxes where you want to go out to. Hope this helps.

    I had a guy say that this was a crutch for the poorer musicians and that it doesn't make their music better unless they get better.
    Look... do you bowl or golf? Did you start off as a pro bowler or golfer? No? Then I bet you took advantage of certain tools in the game called handicaps that leveled the playing field and made it enjoyable for you, a sub-par bowler, to partake of the game and find joy in it. Eventually, you got better and the handicap was needed less and less till you hit your scoring cap.
    The same is happening here. This is a tool. It allows musicians with a poorer timing ability to sync up and play better. There is also the ability to repeat the chorus ON THE FLY. So all the folks who desire to follow the leading of the Spirit don't have to worry about the click track stopping. There are so many variables to this tool now. Dive into it and learn how to use it.

      Michael Villalpando Nonsense. Nothing says anyone has to do just one thing. Everything has a structure. Even "free playing" has restrictive structure regarding key signatures, etc. It's all just a template for the Holy Spirit to operate. Creativity is ALWAYS about getting something amazing from a structured system. If you think that the HS can't work with a click-track, you might as well say that the key of C is too restrictive. God is not limited by our limitations.

    • @stuestolen
      @stuestolen Před 9 lety

      Michael Villalpando What do you mean by that?!

    • @bobwrotenstien315
      @bobwrotenstien315 Před 9 lety

      ZombieTactics Depends how far you take it. There is no creative process for the musician standing on a stage if he is playing along to prerecorded music, and his own levels are so low he is a minor part of the sound. That is the extreme end. It's a little deceptive too, because you are giving the impression that you are doing something that you are not doing.
      Adding drums or bass, or some percussion when you don't have them on stage, but what you yourself are playing is not in the backing track, that to me seems acceptable. There is no deception there. But a singer singing with 4 layers of vocals to thicken the sound.... if you don't really need the singer standing there except for the visual, then it would be more upfront to present that as miming or something else.

    • @ZombieTactics
      @ZombieTactics Před 9 lety +1

      Bob Wrotenstien For purpose of clarity, can you tell me what instrument you play? Do you have a personal stake or interest?

    • @DavidGossettMusic
      @DavidGossettMusic Před 9 lety +1

      +Michael Villalpando Not really, you can arrange the project file so that you can change the arrangement mid song. And you don't even need Ableton, you can do this in Reaper which is a $60 DAW. Almost every pro band you hear, CCM, Gospel, Secular, is running some sort of tracks. You can even program the keys on you're midi controller or keyboard to correspond to sections of the song or to turn off or on certain parts of the track. You can be just as flexible with the track as without it.

      +gospelplayer2 - General RAWR . exactly my point. if it did where is the expression of the heart. besides we are "skillfully play" our instruments. if God wanted just a bunch of electronic beings worshiping him he would have made them, I believe he created people with free will who would praise him because they choose to. thanks for the opportunity to clarify.

      David Tafoya I'm a 20 year pro with a music degree. I, and many bands, secular as well as church, use tracks/samples/clicks for a few useful reasons. 1. Working with subs (pros generally are first come first serve). I can't be beholden to a keyboardist's non-ability to not get all timbres and parts. 2. Fashioning a set to bpm like a DJ = emotional impact as dance band. 3. Aux sounds like white noise, hand claps, appropriate kicks for modern music. Try playing a Rhianna song w/o it. You'll sound adequate at best. Mostly, the reason musicians and audience complain is because the players emotionally translate their fear when "confined" by a click/track/tech. Why are the musicians fearful? Because, it's difficult and exposes the players' weaknesses; drummer has poor time/can't play to a click (can't simply claim you're "jazz."), bassist/guitar/vox don't fully know the arrangement, keyboardist doesn't have the producer ears or motivation to cover full arrangement parts. You see, it's REFUSING to play to click/tech that is the crutch.

      Stephen Pertesis i can appreciate your perspective. However From mine I am not looking at it from a entertainment point of view. Last weekend I along with a church full of people were move by a young lady (a guest ) and her guitar only (without tracks) because of what came out of her heart. after which the worship team (they do use the click tracks) where added to the stage and i whatch the atmospere change as soon as the music began. it wasnt the music it was the heart. The purpose of a praise and worship team is not to entertain but to lead in people into worship. I guess we have a different goals. To me its as different as painting what a person feel, and painting a color by number picture.

      Hey David. I totally agree with you from an artist/creative standpoint. If it were up to me, I would let my guitar do all of the speaking. I have and people are moved. It's just a matter, for me, of playing weddings, corporate parties and bars = we perform the same function as DJs. I've come to accept it in order to compete with them. Oh look...two people on youtube with seemingly polar opposite views realizing that they actually agree on from different perspectives haha That has never happened as far as I know. Thanks for being a good sport!

    This is NOT about play'n w/a Click Track,He's showing you how to cheat & play backing trx w/a band. Bands Artist have been Sued over using this method he is explaining as a click & it's NOT a loop is not a click.An artist MUST by law print on a ticket backing trx used@ concert,IF you have a Good Drummer you don't need a click live. You think The Holy Spirit has any to do w/this? I've run sound for years & we never used a click,my band never used a click in studio.He said to do cuz the World does

    We started with click tracks, not to be any fancier, but simply to help us hold the beat, and get tighter together as a group. It helped us be more consistent and disciplined in our playing, and helped us get through those places where we naturally wanted to start speeding up.
