I've been binge watching the building of Silver Fox. I'm realizing that it's fascinating to be part of this journey. The Bickerstaff team really care about what they're doing. The Christmas video was hilarious. Thank you for sharing so much of yourselves.
Another superb video explaining the plumbing systems aboard your narrowboat. As much as I enjoy your cruising videos, I am learning a lot about precisely how I would build my narrowboat! Thank you!
Our pleasure!
Great explanation regarding the plumbing Colin, and the chalk drawings were easy to understand.
Colin u explaining the plumbing layout is so thorough and easy for anyone who doesn’t know that to understand. I can see the excitement of you and Shaun’s face, I love it 😊 onto the electrics video.
Glad it was helpful!
Love the drawing and writing, brilliantly done. Hats off.
Thank you! Cheers!
Never in my life did I ever imagine that I’d watch a video on plumbing and be quite enthralled! Perhaps it’s plumbing the depths for me (or was it a pipe dream?) but I loved it. Thank you for your concise explanations: all very interesting. And by golly, that’s doodly’s great!
These comments are getting worse 😂😂😂
Gotta love an excellent diagram based explanation! Great detail.
Colin, you are an absolute genius with a blackboard! How do you draw such straight lines so quickly and in different colors? It is truly a gift.
Hi Jay. I had some help from an app :)
I love the magic chalk that draws in red and blue while staying yellow. I has so impressed with the hand writing for several seconds . . . .
Thanks, Holly! (I cheated - it's an app) ;-) xxx
Another great Vlog! It's great for a novice to see the technical inner workings of a boat without getting their 'feet wet', so thank you. The diagrams and descriptions were particularly useful in this entry. As ever, the film making and 'presenting' elements are so professional - it makes the series entertaining in its own right. I'm so glad that I found these Vlogs. I am now binge watching the series at great speed, its inspiring. Cheers.
Thanks, Oliver! Hope you enjoy the rest of the episodes. xxx
Brilliant! Got my own boat and fortunately have not had to delve into the plumbing much but it's nice to know how simple it all is if ever I had to. Well done, very informative!
👍🏻👍🏻
You guys are absolutely unique in this Narrowboat vloging, you're entertaining, enlightening, engaging and utterly personable, I would be in absolute disbelief if you haven't already been offered opportunities to make films/documentaries. You both have a completely amazing talent, seriously, talent. Keep up the great work and thank you profoundly for all you guys do.
Aww, thanks! yeah, we've had a few offers 😉
Love the 'blackboard' ... what a steady hand you have! :)
I have now watched 68 vlogs in 3 days! Thanks Colin and Shaun
Fantastic! I hope you're enjoying them!
That was brilliant! You made it so clear and I LOVED the chalk drawing. So clever x
You're just ace! You know that, right? xxxxxxxxxx
I’ve just discovered you both when your Boat painting videos came up on my recommended list. Wow! Forget the subject matter for a bit, your filming and sound and excellent. I just read your webpage and I can understand why. I love this channel. I intend to binge watch your content from the beginning. Thanks so much for sharing your “laughs, the stress, your decisions, arguments, and adventures as your new boat takes shape”
Well... Gordon, I don’t know what to say? Thank you! I hope you enjoy the binge-watching. Thank you for your lovely feedback 👍🏻 xx
@@FoxesAfloat I joined a few months ago. Binge watched everything. You guys are great fun. Thanks for all your videos. From Burton Ohio.
Thank you! 😍
That was a really clear explanation of the water and heating system. That's a very shiny and sparkly shower too! Thanks for the update, guys xx
Thank you, lovely! x
Really looking forward to your next build and any technology development you’ll make
Thank you!
@@FoxesAfloat I know you’ll get hundreds of positive messages about your blogs and both of your personalities, but here’s another… you guys are without doubt, the most naturally, genuine, informative canal boat guys broadcasting on the interweb… so please please keep it up …. Masterful explanations, top bracket video making. A1 !!
Going to enjoy your series.
Brilliant vlog. Thank you! Your graphics explaining it were amazing. You do such a fantastic videos and put so much work in. Thank you! x
Thanks, Sue! xxx
❤️this. Very interesting. That’s the difference when you can actually see the progress of a new build. Knowing what and where all the hoses/pipes etc are going and with your memory Colin it should prove worthwhile. Have I mentioned I’m so jealous of you both? 😂
Great bit of chalk doodling, very effective...even better impression of a gulper pump...lol (that had me chucklin').
Silver fox surely will be a stunning narrow boat.
Take care,

As always, thank you Steve! We look forward to your feedback :)
Explained very well...… I thought when watching ' how many attempts did this take?' the outtakes didn't disappoint, well done!
Ha ha! Yeah, I was also having a bad day, pretty down with anxiety, so my brain wasn’t working 100% 😂
I though your drawings and explanation was awesome and so easy to follow. Thank you 😊
Thanks, Lily! x
What a great video, that was actually really interesting to see how and where the pipes are run!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Colin & Shaun, great vlog, good clear diagrams and explanations, think you would have made a great plumber Colin. Lol. You forgot to add enough room in shower for 2, help save on water when cruising lol.
Ha ha! Thanks, Mark. I'm not really that good with my hands when it comes to things like this. I guess two in the shower will save us water! Ha ha! xx
I love this.... keep em comin 😃👍
More to come!
Very well explained ! When u are an ician rather than an er, u can't go wrong

Good to see the progress, only a few more hours/ days/weeks/ months ? and the job will be done, and you guys will have a gorgeous boat to enjoy yourselfs with. Atb, Peter.
Hey Peter. Yeah, it’s getting closer! Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻
Hey Guys, another great vlog. Noticed your water tank is different to ours as yours has immersion heater, we fitted one on ours to give us that option. Also great graphics.
Thank you! I'm not sure we'll get much opportunity to use the immersion as I don't imagine we'll visit many moorings with electric hook-ups. Have you found many? xx
To be honest we haven’t used ours much either except when we have shore power when we have booked the boat into a marina when we have needed to go to Kent. We have also used during the summer when we had loads of solar which was the original reason we fitted it. We haven come across any mooring s with electric yet. Xx
Hi guys - its looking good - we have the same colour Respatex shower walls as you have and the light woodwork is the same makes for a very modern looking boat. - great minds think alike! ;-). - look forward to seeing you on the water soon. Have fun K and K
Cheers, Great taste :) x
Thanks for the well detailed explanation of your water system, very helpful as that is our next job, we’re also thinking of fitting a heat exchanger which will heat the hot water and the radiators when the engine is running...btw good drawing
Thanks, Jill! (The drawing was done using an app) 👍🏻
Love the content guys, are running everything through one calorifier ie hot water for sink, shower and radiators
Only just found your channel. Binge watchin this lot tonight.
Hope you enjoy our journey Jamie 👍
Most certainly will.
You two are a hoot. Two hoots! :) x
We've been called much worse :-D xxx
Your ‘Doodly’ graphics are brilliant. Well done 👏👏
It's a cool app. 😂
Foxes Afloat what’s the app called please.
Thats great, really good to see simplified. So I guess I do not need to use copper pipe at all? My one misgiving about plastic pipe is that a leak may develop, less likely on copper with olives I guess
Not a plumber so I can't answer that one 😬
Hi Guys great seeing all the stages of the fitout. Well done vlog as every. PS we think your diagram is well drawn Colin Xx
Thank you, Annie! Glad you're enjoying it :) xx
Not the normal flash, but SUPER informative. You can't have desert all the time... sometimes you have to eat your veg. :D (the chalkboard diagrams were hilarious, and very helpful).
I WANT DESSERT ALL THE TIME! xxx
Cake!
Brilliant vlogs. Keep it up! Question about radiators: don't you need to pump the hot water round?
Yes you do
I do love the drawings they were fantastic, I am not sure what you used but it is pretty cool. I am not sure if I could get use to the amount of water you are carrying. That would be quite change to get use to. I suppose you need to stop to top off fairly often. But then you do need to stop often to change out the toilet cassettes so it would all work out in the end. Great explanations. Thanks for sharing...Vic
Thanks Vic. We can usually make a tank last a week, so it's not too much inconvenience.
I agree with Greg
Look good 👍🏻
Thanks Gary!
Excellently presented and very informative. The graphic diagram was amazing - what program do you use for that?
sallyu1 Hi Sally. Thank you! I used ‘Doodly’ for the diagrams 👍🏻 xx
Silver fox is getting close. The water system seems easy enough. And by the way your drawings were excellent. Who cares about scale. I thought they really helped to visualize the systems
Cheers, Rusty! x
Are you going to lag the pipes? Where the hot pipes run next to the cold pipes the heat will transfer to the cold pipe making the cold water warm. You’ll also loose heat from the heating pipes which is not very economical as you want the max heat running through the rads. Looking good though boys!!
Hi Ryan, yeah, this is just the pipe runs, first fix 👍🏻
Coolio! Nothing worse than brushing the nashers with warm water. I’m a plumber and seen this problem a few times. Looking forward to seeing silver fox on the water.
So much easier these days running plastics pipe and fittings. Also easier to repair or add to the system should you need to. Can you isolate the heated water to the radiators so that in the summer when you don’t need radiator heat you can run the boiler just for hot water?
Hi Colin, Yeah, the water that heats the radiators is a separate system from the domestic hot water, so we can just have hot domestic water and not heat the heating system water.
Absolutely loved the style of your graphics to explain your water system. Very stylish and informative. What software did you use for this?
Tim White Hi Tim. It’s an online tool called Doodly 👍🏻
By the way,
Colin, I've heard you call the bed sizes on boats as both full-size and king-size, and I keep thinking there's no way a king-size bed would fit in a narrowboat.
So I looked them up, and here are the dimensions of various mattresses, in cm.:
Full: 134.5 x 190.5
Queen: 152.5 x 203.5
King: 193 x 203.5
Cal. King: 183x 213.5
Yeah, we ended up with a king size.
Very impressive! Nothing but the best!
Hi Guys. Wondering how you keep the water holding tank from freezing in winter. Is the bow section heated? Regards Norm
Hi Norm 👋🏻
The water tank is well insulated with spray foam and there’s an air gap between the tank and the skin of the boat 👍🏻
I wonder if you kept one size of a pluming pipes or various sizes? Hows pressure work on the pipes? Is the woter enought presurizes?
We have a water pump to keep up the pressure which works perfectly x
Hi gentlemen,
another nice video again. But I miss one important thing - the sewers. How do you get off the used water?
Hey 👋🏻
The water from the shower and sink goes into the canal - we’ll use environmentally friendly detergents. Toilet waste is held in a tank and emptied at ‘Elsan’ points along the canal :)
@@FoxesAfloat : Hi it's me again. Where did you drill a hole through the boat's wall? The waterlevel of the canal is surely much higher than the showeroutlet. Do you use another waterpump? And where and how did you instal the poo-tank? What diameter do the tubes have?
The shower waste is pumped out and the toilet tank is under the toilet. If you Google Cassette Toilet, you’ll see what I mean :)
@@FoxesAfloat : Thanks for your quick answers. In my dreams I'm planning my own narrowboat. I found a CAD-narrowboat designer, but it is not so good (it's primitive). So I do it with the good old paperwork and collecting the informations here. Yours are very helpful. Good night for today.
Does the hot water from your eberspacher pass through your radiators before reaching your calorifier? Do you find that it takes a long time for the water to heat up? or did i mis-understand the drawing? :)
Hi 👋
It's a circuit from the tank to the radiators that continually circulates. It usually heats the full tank in about 40 minutes and the radiators are hot within 10 minutes unless we have them switched off to just heat the water in the tank.
ok question do you have a water filter from the stanless steel tank to the rest of the boat
Yes.
Hi guys , looks a great fitut looking forward to seeing it completed.
But got to ask what was the app you used for the chalk board, many thanks.
Found it further down the comments .
How long is your well deck from the bow doors to the front locker?
About this big 👉 👈 🤣
Seriously though, we’re not sure. Not measured it. If we remember, we’ll measure it in our next visit. 👍
Are the heater lines kept separate from the cold water lines? If not, you'll never get cool water (from the cold tap) while the heater is on....
The cold is cold and the warm is warm 👍🏻
Hello, Nice boat you have!
I'm curious, do you have to have the central heating running if you want hot water - or can hot water and central heating be operated independently?
The radiators can be isolated so it just heats the water 👍🏻
Hi Guys, very well done video...... I have had this question for a while and never had an appropriate place to ask, this seems like its as good as it gets, one would expect it to last a lifetime however stuff happens is there a way to get the water tank out to replace it without tearing most of the front of the boat out or is it just as it is in a canal boat (same would apply to the fuel tank) ? Also does the colorifier have electric heating elements in it to heat the water for heat & hot water when your plugged into mains?
All the Best
Bill
Hey Bill 👋🏻
I’m not sure if there’s an easier way of replacing the main tank out without cutting out the front bulkhead.
Yeah, our calorifier heats via the engine, the Eberspacher, and also has an electric immersion heater for when we have shore power.
So, when the engine is not running the "backer" thingy does all the water heating, right?
Yep 👍🏻
OMG whenever anyone gets technical my brain sparks out! I know you didn’t mention it but I get confused about the hot and cold when it comes to the antifreeze. If the heating and hot water both run from the calorifier, am I showering in water containing antifreeze. I wouldn’t think so but I’m not sure how the two systems run separately with only one calorifier. I bet I’m missing something really simple and sound stupid ☹️. Anyway it was another great video. I loved the diagrams. Were they your drawings and instructions or was it generated by computer, then you added you hand above. It was so neat. If you did do it yourself it was amazing. After watching this video maybe when your boat is finished you should do a visual manual for boat owners, plumbing, electrics, engine maintenance, greasing the stern gland 😳 etc. Thanks as always.
Oh, Sylvia, you've just had Shaun giggling :-D
Okay... Imagine the hot water tank (Like an immersion heater). It fills up with water from the main cold storage tank (at the front) and it gets heated by either an electric element (like an immersion heater), but we only use that when we have shore power. The engine heated water runs through the calorifier in a coil, so it stays separate but passes through. It's the same for the Eberspacher which heats the radiators. The hot water runs through the calorifier in a coil. So it's three different systems. Engine, Radiators and domestic water (clean).
I had a bit of help with the diagrams thanks to an app :) xxxxx
Hi. What software did you use to show the plan/diagram?
Hi. It's called Doodly.
So does the engine have to be running all of the time do your hot water tank maintains hot water for washing and is that the same for the radiator heating for the boat as well? Do you have another means or a back up system?
The calorifier can give us domestic hot water either by running the engine, using the Eberspacher or the immersion heater element. So we have three ways :)
Foxes Afloat always nice to have a 3 way or three options. Lol
Love the sparkly shower! Colin you love a good bath - why did you guys decide not to put a little boat bath in with a shower overhead? Seen a few boats with this in (think also in one of your earlier vlogs when you were boat shopping). Are they just too small to enjoy, or do they use too much water etc?
That's exactly right, Charles. They use far too much water.
Looks great but I have one glaring question. You make no mention of holding tanks for grey or black water. Are you discharging directly into the water?
Oh no! Not a glaring question...! 😱 Ha ha! This might be easier to answer your question canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/boating/boating-blogs-and-features/boating-team/a-canal-is-not-a-bin
That surprises me
hi guys :)
Starting my second session of binching your vlogs with this episode (came up to vlog 34 in the first session and still not tired of you two, so thats good ;) )
Seeing the plumbing in progress in this video, i do however have a question about that plumbing . You have cold and warm water pipes running next to each other and mostly flowing in opposite directions. Without heat insulation you would basicaly have a heat exchanger along almost the entire length of the boat... How well insulated are those pipes to avoid unwanted heat transfer?
regards, Fenna
Hi Fenna. They are fine. The hot water stays hot. The cold water stays cold 👍🏻
Hi Colin and Shaun, good to hear :) i was just wondering about that because thermal insulation is a bit of a thing in my work at an icerink ;)
Is there a problem in the winter time - keeping the various pipes from freezing? May sound stupid, but I'm from Florida!!!
Not at all. The shell is insulated and the heat inside the boat keeps them well above freezing 👍🏻
@@FoxesAfloat Excellent! I've heard about people leaving the taps on and such to make sure the pipes don't burst in the cold. That could use up your water supply rather quickly. Of course - I am from Flori-duh!
Lads what can I say but “nice pipes”. That goes for both of you. Lol
Lol!
Hi Colin and Shaun. I've only found your blog after reading Part 1 in WW mag (now subscribing) and have now watched all your Foxes Afloat vlogs to date. We are seriously considering a narrowboat investment too, not as a liveaboard but extended periods of cruising at least and have hired a couple of times. Our research to date has been through the various mags and publications so finding your extremely well made and detailed vlog with your experiences, decisions and build processes is gold-dust! Narrowboat Silver Fox is looking GOOD!
We have so many small questions of detail and layout but your personal choices are close to our own in many ways so following your journey is so informative, along with your professional delivery.
Could I ask 3 questions here please.... ?
1.Did you consider hybrid engine power? Its something that we'd seriously consider unless you have found a major issue?
2.Your backwards facing bed I totally get and had also considered the pitch of the boat for this, but is it possible to build a bed base that slopes in counter to the boat pitch so it's higher above the floor at the head end than at the foot end? Had you thought of that or does it pose other issues? (We'd like to have the view through the forward doors while in bed - as well as the tv!)
3. Both doors and side hatches appear to be steel faced (I guess the insides will have a wooden finish). On the hire boats we've had so far the doors/side hatches have been fully wooden. What are the pros and cons here, please?
Sorry to drag on!
Cheers
Mike & James
Hi Mike.
Thanks for the message (and for subscribing). Okay, your questions...
1. We didn't consider a hybrid engine. A few people asked us why and the honest answer is that we don't know enough about them. Our decision to go with diesel isn't based on anything more than it's what we know, and we know how to maintain it well. We got a bit of criticism for that from hybrid fans, but at the end of the day it's our decision :)
2. I suppose it would be possible to build a bed base that slopes in counter to the pitch, but it raises a couple of issues. Firstly, the pitch changes depending on the levels of water and fuel in the tanks. Second, the engineering needed to create a slope would be more costly than just turning the bed around. We don't have windows at the bow, and the TV will be on the back of the shower wall, hence it's the easiest option for us.
3. Our side hatch doors are steel with wood panels inside. The steel provides us with the external security and weatherproofing, and the internal wood matches the finish inside the boat. You definitely want steel on the outside!
These are just my opinions, and other boaters may disagree. What I would say is that opinions aren't always right, whoever you listen to. We've learned that. Go and see stuff for yourselves. We did, and it was the best thing we could have done.
Have a fab time with your boat search (if you go for it).
Colin xxx
@@FoxesAfloat Hey, thanks so much for your helpful replies! I'm sure we'll think of other questions along the way, and would love to be able to ask you more then, either here or DM on your website (don't use social media apart from this!).
Cheers, and keep up the vlogs! :D
Mike & James xx
Is the shower drain facing the bow or stern, bearing in mind the boat will be stern lower than the bow, looks like it is bow facing. Forget this if i am wrong.
Hi Mike. The water falls into the plug and is pumped out of the side. There isn't any drain towards the bow or stern.
@@FoxesAfloat What i meant was is the drain at the lowest point, unless i am seeing it wrong it looks like the drain is on the high point of the tray as the boat will be tilting towards the stern, so you may end up with a puddle in the tray below the drain height.
@@mikehurley5052 At our age, there's always going to be a puddle of some sort blighting our lives :-D x
Hi, I have a question. Have you ever considered Infrared Heating Panels for your boat? Is the main reason people do not have them because of the draw they have on the battery bank?
Got to be honest, I've no idea. I will Google them and have a look. x
@@FoxesAfloat Ok awesome, I referred back to your electric video you did to see how much power they would potentially draw too, for one panel that I was looking at of 350w, running from the inverter at say 240v, on for 18 hours i think was around 26ah a day. Is that calculation correct? and Is that quite a lot?
@@CNNBrow127 Yeah, 26.25Ah. is a lot.
@@FoxesAfloat ok thanks!
Infra red warm you but not the air around you so you only feel warm when sitting in front of wal, walk away and feel cold
Will the pipes carrying the hot water be insulated?
Hey Barls! No, the runs are pretty short, and I've been told that it would invalidate the warranty from Eberspacher.
hi guys, what size is your calarofier please ?
Oh my, I can’t remember. We no longer own the boat xx
Do I understand it correctly that all your drain water (minus toilet) goes directly into the canals? Soap, plate scrapings, toothpaste, et al. I'm not familiar with the canals there but I find that surprising.
It does. There’s no other way to do it as there’s no room for storage tanks. Everything we use is environmentally friendly to the wildlife. Water is constantly replenished to the canals from rivers and reservoirs, so there’s no build up.
Quick question, how long is Silver Fox?
Hi Greg, She's 57 feet long.
Hey bud, where did you get the panelling on the walls
It was made by hand
Did you do it bud
Did you decide on these systems yourself or did you use a specialist company?
We took advice from a lot of boaters and builders and used a combination of the best options.
@@FoxesAfloat did you find it diffucult to source the right materials?
What is that fantastic drawing software you use, please. Regards AJ
Hi Alan. The software is called 'Doodly' :) x
Are you going to insulate the hot water pipes?... Or will you have a way to recirculate the hot water in the pipes?... I just would think you would need to let a lot of water run before it gets warm enough for a morning shower?...
Hi Kevin. The plan would normally be to shower during the day, ideally while the engine is running so that there is plenty of piping hot water for us both, and then the tank can warm up again to give us a tank full for the evening and next morning.
XOXOX
💜
...instead of radiators, I would install underfloor heating, has anyone ever done that on a narrowboat ?
(Statt Radiatoren würde ich Fußbodenheizung verlegen, hat das schon mal jemand auf einem Narrowboot gemacht ?)
1. Massively more expensive.
2. Very inefficient.
3. Maintenance a nightmare.
So, no. I’ll stick with what works best 👍🏻
@@FoxesAfloat , ok, i'm plummer myself, but inefficient? No, I would not say that. The underfloor heating provides a stable, cheap base heat, the oven for the desired temperature. Where did you get your information from?
"ok, ich bin selbst Heizungsmann, aber ineffizient ? Nein, würde ich nicht sagen. Die Fußbodenheizung sorgt für eine stabile, billige Grundwärme, der Ofen für die gewünschte Temperatur. Woher hast du deine Information ?"
Paul Paulsen From a large number of narrowboat builders, including one of 40 years. May I see your plans for a narrowboat that substantiate your idea? It may be efficient in a house, but this is not a house.
@@FoxesAfloat , ok, accepted. :-)
Just a question, because I find it very comfortable in my house, which was built 1907, maybe as "bad" isolated like a narrowboat ... :-)
All the best !
