  • Want to know about Narrowboat Electrics? It's time to wire up narrowboat Silver Fox and in this vlog we'll be installing our 12V & 230V electrical system, wiring, batteries & inverter.
    In this vlog we'll talk you through the electrical system we're installing on our narrowboat, from the batteries and shore hook-up, through to the inverter, distribution board, each of the circuits, switches, and appliances.
    Colin shows you how to carry out a power audit, and invents a battery made from jelly beans (no, really!).

    I have totally enjoyed these vlogs on the building of Silver Fox. THAT is how we would do it. I am an only child and my dad was a auto mechanic and later machinest extraordinaire. He taught me how to take care of my car, I watched him fix and repair things, and guess I inherited his genes to like doing that kind of things...even though I was/am a girly-girl!!!! I asked, and he taught me all about all of that stuff. Silver Fox is not only very pretty but you know her inside and out. That is fabulous! And, I have enjoyed and understood everything being done. Thank you for those vlogs.

    Very enjoyable series, it is great seeing your boat being built. I only discovered this channel a few weeks back, and just caught up to this video.
    The power audit table is very misleading when you talk about amp-hours for 230 volt appliances like the TV. Some may assume that relates to the amp-hours the batteries are rated at, which is far from the case. The 0.64Ah needs to be multiplied by 230V/12V to get a useful figure (12.3Ah). You will also need to account for the inverter efficiency which is harder to estimate, so you are better off doing a measurement through the inverter but lets assume it is 90% then your actual consumption would 13.6Ah. Another factor to consider with the inverter is there is some background consumption from it even when no 230V appliance is in use, unless of course you disconnect the inverter as well.

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  Před 5 lety +2

      Hello!
      Thanks for the nice comment, I'm glad you're enjoying the series so far :)
      In regards to the power audit section, I'm sorry if you found the table misleading. As you can see from your own example above, working out exact figures is quite a complicated series of formulae, and in this particular vlog (as I mention at the end of that piece) all boats have different battery/inverter/power requirements and supplies.
      For that reason, and to keep things as simple as possible for this introduction to the power audit, the examples I gave were the basic calculations. One for working out a 230V amperage and watts from a 230V supply (I don't actually say that the 230V is being taken from a 12V battery - It could be from the 230V shore hook-up), and then a 12V example for use from a 12V supply (the fridge).
      The reason I didn't include provision for the inverter efficiency is, again, because our system hadn't been switched on at that time, and I wasn't going to guess because once we switch it all on I'll be doing an actual reading. Hence I said at the end of that part of the vlog that I would be following up with a more detailed power audit on our completed system, once the electrics were finished and all the appliances connected.
      I hope that all makes sense? I do tend to babble sometimes! And I hope you stay with us - The boat is almost finished! Colin xxxxx

    Oh, this one had me in hysterics! Colin, you and Shaun did an amazing job of explaining a topic that even most Mechanics, find difficult to understand. As an Aircraft Mechanic and total nerd Amateur Radio Operator, I find the topic of Electricity and Electronics quite fascinating. I think your idea of using a Jelly Bean battery to explain current draw in Amp/Hours was sheer genius. The power audit was easy to understand and I think many if not most grasped your explanation. You took a difficult topic, seasoned it with a boatload of humor, even explaining the Power Grid and held our interest to the end! Well Done You ! Oh . . . and to see the two of you doing the Cha Cha . . . well that was the icing on the cake !

    nice calculation, but you need to do it in kWh - you missed a factor of ~20 for the consumption of the TV :o)
    Amp hours are okay when everything runs on the same voltage, but with 2 kWh for each battery you have a number that everyone understands.

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  Před 4 lety +2

      Oh boy 🙄 haha! Look back at the previous comments. The figures are based on flat formulas, ie, a standard voltage before inverters, battery voltages or any other calculation is taken into account. I do say that in the vlog and that an accurate power audit will follow once we're up and running 😉

      Hey Malcolm! Thank you for such a nice comment, and welcome to our channel! Our actual use is gonna be about 136Ah, so even using 50% we could manage with yours. Does that make you less jealous? (I'm trying here!) xxxxx

      Foxes Afloat Lol. Maybe! No more space in the battery box anyway. The boat was built in 1988. It was all 12v until I upgraded the bank and added an inverter. Adding Solar has been the best upgrade yet and looking forward to seeing what you’ve done with yours’. We have 3*100w panels but suspect you have rather more than that...

    Was waiting for you to mention which type of batteries you are using.
    I just bought some for my motorhome. 120ah AGM batteries. As no doubt you are aware, l can drain those down to 20% dod. Although, that would reduce the cycle life. My main reason for choosing AGM batteries is no need to vent. Which is more important on a boat.
    Lithium iron phosphate would be the best choice in any application. Sadly they are far too expensive for most guys. I can afford them, but l am a tight Scotsman 😁.
    So l have my batteries, l have my 100/50 victron smartsolar panel. Now l just need to source suitable panels. Monocrystaline, the type l can walk on like yours.
    I am fortunate to be qualified in electronics, so a big saving installing myself.

    Interestingly, here in Australia we don't use ring mains in houses but just a number of individual circuits from separate circuit breakers. Nor do we have fuses in our appliance plugs. Loving your vlogs lads. I'm gradually working my way through them. Cheers.

    Well done lads. A big jump in production values compared to so many other channels. "If you build it they will come" springs to mind whenever I see channels put this much effort into a video. I suspect you will see subscriptions rise very quickly once people watch this video. I think you may have pushed Journey with Jono and CruisingtheCut (my favourite canal channels) into second and third place on the podium with this episode. Subscribed.
