  • In this video I compare the Rokinon 24mm T1.5 Cine ED AS IF UMC prime lens with Canon's L series 24mm f/1.4L II USM prime photography lens.
    Both lenses are very unique in their own ways and offer amazing results.
    To make the comparison consistent, the same video settings were used throughout, unless stated otherwise. The color balance was set to "Sunny" and no color correcting or grading was applied in any shape or form. Also, no lens correction profiles were used.
    This comparison video is simply for your entertainment and information. Since both lenses are amazing, I tried my best not to lean towards any specific lens. It all boils down to what you need and what your budget is.
    Comparison footage shot on Sony A7Sii while using Fotodiox lens adapter for the Canon 24mm. Footage was shot at 4k 24fps.
    Interview footage was shot with Panasonic GH5.

    I can't believe that some people actually have bad stuff to say about your video. I found it very instructive, well explained, I like the way you approached the comparison, and your overall style. Great job, subscribed ;)

    hi, does the lens correction features in cameras, work on the cine manual lenses as the rokinon?\

    Thanks for this video. I’m debating on an old Canon FD 24/35mm or the Rokinon 24/35mm to match with my Sony 50mm 1.8. Also, i personally do not see why people are saying your video is terrible. Specially, those stating it looks like cellphone footage. They seem to have no experience with cinematography because professional footage is more credit to how the directors uses lighting in relation to camera angle. Clearly, being outside means wide open lighting and using a ND filter kind of defeats the purpose of a comparison video. This video was helpful. Again, thank you.

      Depending on what camera body you’re using, I would potentially go for the older canon lenses if you like the older glass artifacts. I have a small collection of vintage lenses that I absolutely love. The only problem (like you mentioned) is color matching with modern glass.

      Yev Zakharov , I’m using a new Sony a6100. I care less for the S-LOG so I saved a few hundred from the a6600. I had the Sony A7rIII but returned it; I realized i would rather have the a6100 with a good lens collection than the A7 and only one kit lens. As far as the color matching, I think I saw where you can remove the vintage shade by simply color correcting - close enough? Im still semi-new to videography so I’m learning the post and pre stage of it. Personally, I’m not into the whole LUTs and fake perspective in the post stage so i threat videoagraphy/photography like i do with audio engineering in which is my expertise - Crap in, crap out. Captured the content near perfect to what your achieving and use minimal correction/effects. These lens works almost like a microphone. Capturing light vs sound. There is no “one hit all” microphone that will get the sound your trying to achieve. It’s crazy because I use my Fotasy 35mm 1.7 more than my Sony Prime 50mm. I use my cheap MXL V67 more so than my Neumann. It’s all in the director and/or artist, not so much the tools.
      I just like that look of the Canon FD lenses but also the more modern so I’m thinking i should get both it and the Rokinon or similar like a few cheap cine lenses I’m seeing. I dont really care for the sharpest lens.

    It's obvious in comparing the two siding/corner post trim in the last series of pics, that the highlights in the Roki pics are blown out due to different exposure values, which is the fault of the photographer and not the lens..

    • @YevZakharov
      @YevZakharov  Před 4 lety +2

      In order to keep the exposure values as close to one another as possible, I always used 0.0 E.V. However, there are still minute differences that I simply could not control.

    I'm super tempted to get the Rokinon 24mm and mod the mounting ring to work on my camera. Or just get an EF version and a dumb adapter. Only benefit of replacing the mounting ring would be not having to deal with an adapter.

      @@YevZakharov SL / L mount. I have the 85mm t1.5 full frame lens in m43 mount (seems like kind of a waste), and it looks like I would be able to change out the mount ring on the back, but I'm honestly not sure what to look up to buy. I'd cannibalize my adapters if I could, but it looks like I'd have to do quite a bit of grinding which I don't have the tools for.

    How did you measure the light when you compensated with ISO? Light meter or internal meter of the camera?

    • @YevZakharov
      @YevZakharov  Před 3 lety

      By using the camera’s exposure value meter. This way the sensor was getting the same exact light input (theoretically).
      External light meter would not help because it doesn’t know what the camera sensor is actually seeing.

    I know this video is a few years old, but it's basically the only comparison there is... Unless Rokinon/Samyang is literally lying about the T stops than your testing is flawed. There is no possible way an f/1.4 lens can be 2/3 of a stop brighter than a t/1.5 lens, it's physically impossible. In fact most objective tests show the Canon lens sitting at t/1.7 while there's no evidence to my knowledge that Rokinon/Samyang is incorrect in their measurements.

    • @YevZakharov
      @YevZakharov  Před 2 lety

      These were just my findings. The comparison between light transmission and Aperture were not based on any sort of math or science. Only the exposure values presented by the camera sensor.

  • @2MuchSwag4Funzies
    @2MuchSwag4Funzies Před 4 lety +1

    I think the comparisons weren't very useful because you shot at f10/t10, when it should have been shot at f1.4 with an ND filter. The real effect of cine lenses are shown in the shallow depth images.
    You also compared ISO and EV exposure with different f/t stops. Both lenses should have been set to 1.5 because the cine doesn't go to 1.4. Shooting them with different stops will obviously differ in brightness.

    • @YevZakharov
      @YevZakharov  Před 4 lety +6

      Thanks for the feedback. You have to remember that you cannot simply compare a cinema lens with a stills lens at the same numerical stop value. Because T and F stops equate to different actual measurements of light input, you have to rely on your EV to find the identical stops.

    It's impossible to tell with such bad video quality. you need at high end or at least decent video in order to see the microcontrast difference between the two, this video quality is lower budget that a kid with a cellphone.

      @YevZakharov  Před 4 lety +5

      Did you try viewing the video in FHD? Like I said during the review, I was using the Sony A7Sii for the comparison. Unfortunately that was all I could afford to use at the time. If you 're looking for a comparison that uses even better quality, go find someone with a RED or VeriCam camera. They might be able to offer more detailed results.
