Comparison: Canon 14mm vs. Rokinon 14mm

  • In this video, I compare and review the Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 L II USM against the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC lens.
    And no, the winner isn't based off of the longest lens name... Although it would seem that way.
    In all cases, the same camera and settings were used to compare the lenses. Each shot was taken from a tripod to insure accuracy.
    Camera: Canon EOS 6D II
    Format: RAW
    I hope this comparison is useful for everyone and perhaps helps those who have not had the chance to test these lenses yet.
    Canon 14mm: amzn.to/3m7ICsw
    Rokinon 14mm: amzn.to/3k0Gf8N
    Canon 6D II: amzn.to/3hcYR3J

    Didn't expect that much detail at the corners from the Rokinon, wow. Is there a profile correction in Lightroom for the lens that would reverse/help the distortion? Because if so I think that'd be an absolute game changer

    • @YevZakharov
      @YevZakharov  Před 6 lety +1

      According to Adobe, there is a correction profile for this lens, but it must be a newer version because my Lightroom version doesn't have it. I tried correcting some shots manually, however. There is no way to completely get rid of the distortion in the middle area of the photo.

      Why would this surprise anyone? The Boyer/Samyang/Rokinon/Walimex are all MF and presumably were focused peeked at 10x zoom.
      Where as Op then just half-pressed the Shutter to activate the Canon AF.
      If anything this should be a red flag, to find out if his Body Whatever it was supports AF Microadusting, and if so to tweek it. That or take his Camera + Lens to a Canon service center to let them calibrate them both for him.
      Or barring that deactivate the AF on the Canon and MF the both of them.

    If you set the aperture to f8 and the distance to 1m everything stays in focus more or less and super sharp. I use it for internal shots. LR has lens correction for the Samyang equivalent, which does a superb job, gets rid of the barrel distortion too. I put sticky tape over the manual focus and aperture rings, so I don’t have to keep checking, as I’ve found I have forgot and got out of focus shots. There are several other branded lenses to this lens which are all the same. I bought the Bowers one used for £150.00, absolute bargain, no brainer purchase.

      I do the same thing, in most conditions the depth of field available renders auto focus redundant.

  • @imsgoalie1
    @imsgoalie1 Před 4 lety +8

    The term for the distortion you're seeing in those stars is "coma". It's a thing that comes up often for astrophotographers. I'm totally on board with your conclusion. The canon sacrifices some wide-open detail and sharpness for the sake of less distortion. The Rokinon's distortion can be corrected trivially in lightroom though. You can't capture more detail in post-processing though, that has to be done in-camera. That's why it's the rokinon for me. As for the autofocus, when you're shooting that wide a lens, focus tends to be less sensitive. I wouldn't let a lack of autofocus scare you. The only time you need to be super deliberate with the manual focus is for macro shots, where the camera is within a couple feet of the subject. Otherwise, it's just not as sensitive to adjustment as a tighter lens. It would be a good lens to start getting comfortable with manual focusing on.
    TL;DR
    If you're not going to shoot raw, and you're not going to edit your pictures in post, the canon will take better pictures indoors. But if you're serious enough to spend the money on an l-series canon lens, you're going to be editing your pictures anyway. Buy the Rokinon, fix it in post, enjoy the superior detail and $1,000.

      Akshay Harshe what kind of photography will you do with it?
      I would say if you're shooting Milky Way photos or very distant landscape shots, its distortion won't be that noticeable. But any kind of horizontal shape or line in your composition will most likely be distorted in the center.

    • @aharshephotography
      @aharshephotography Před 6 lety

      Well that is what the main purpose of the Rokinon lens for me to start shooting more milky way photos. I also have Nikon 16-35mm F4 which I mainly use for landscapes. I am seriously confused if I sell of both of these lenses and buy a single Tamron 15-30mm F2.8 (Which looks like a sharp beast) which might solve both of the purposes. (Of course will need more investments on the filters for that front element)
      I will appreciate if you have any comments on that, and yes thanks for your response.

    • @YevZakharov
      @YevZakharov  Před 6 lety

      Akshay Harshe The Tamron 15-30mm is really good. According to "Opticallimits.com" it's sharper than the Nikon lens you have. Though the Rokinon does good with edge sharpness, it distorts more.
      I'd say that the Tamron could potentially replace both lenses and work well for Milky Way and landscape photography. Beats carrying two lenses around. But it's ultimately up to you.

    • @aharshephotography
      @aharshephotography Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks dude.. that was great. This was a deciding factor for me.. Tamron will replace both the lenses and get it at the same for almost the same cost. definitely beats carrying 2 lenses.

    • @YevZakharov
      @YevZakharov  Před 6 lety +1

      Akshay Harshe Yeah, no problem!
      I read from reviews that the Tamron performs better than the Canon 16-35mm MarkIII. Now if that is true, that is simply amazing because I've used the 16-35 and it is a phenomenal lens.

      I own both and the canon smokes the Rokinon. 💯 you are relying on this guys MANUAL comparison. The fact that you can buy the canon for the same price used from keh with a warranty. If you like starburst distortion and cheap plastic, the rok could be a great buy. I OWN both and TRUST a photographer, I would take the canon 10/1. Especially being I don’t have time to edit in post production. If you get into anything, the canon smokes the Rokinon by MILES. Quit being cheap and invest. Rokinon is an ENTRY BUDGET lens

    The Rok is quite sharp, and produces only minimal CA. The dark corners are pretty easy to fix; the complex 'mustache' distortion is perhaps the most irritating flaw. I got one for $150 in early 2022 and I love it!

    • @YevZakharov
      @YevZakharov  Před rokem

      There's certain type of photography that probably won't care about the distortion. Such as milky way/astrophotography. But when there is a horizon in the landscape scene, it makes things really difficult to fix.

      Yongnuo has made a clone of the Canon 14mm f/2.8 which happens to have autofocus. It isn't that good at corners, but it's quite good otherwise. I have my eyes on that one. I guess they can get away with this because the Canon patent has expired. Meike has followed suit. There's also the 50mm f1.8, f1.4 and 85mm f1.8.

      Dunn Right Mowing : Good question. On my Canon, I press the shutter button halfway, just like I would with an autofocus camera. With the shutter button down half way, the camera will beep at your when you move the focus ring and it detects focus.
      So try to focus on an object and simultaneously press the shutter halfway, when it beeps (also sometimes the viewfinder focus point will turn red) you will have focus confirmed.
      Hope that helps.

    Absolutely fascinating! Lots of money difference, and the Canon certainly has some fundamental advantages in terms of distortion over the Rokinon (the Rokinon can't seem to 'depict a straight line as straight'!). And the slight amount of extra light that the Canon allows is a nice feature . . . . But . . . are those superior traits worth all that money when you see how blurry the Canon is at the edges, and the purple chromatic fringing? I personally don't think so. Besides, some lens-distorting effects are somewhat correctable in post, though I'm hardly an expert in that field. I've played around some (but not with these lenses!) in Corel's PSP program, and it seems quite possible that the aberration in the Rokinon -- the way it "curves" straight lines -- could at least be fixed to some degree, maybe completely. But who knows? Not me!! I'll let someone who is far more expert at stuff like that (like Yev maybe?), pursue that at some point.
    Great analysis in the film (very systematic, and straightforward).
    I think it is too easy in photography for a lot of folks, especially amateurs like myself, to get intimidated sometimes by the idea that you "always get what you pay for," especially when the manufactures realize that they're a lot of "brand snobs" (as in "Canon vs. Nikon" or "Sony vs. Canon" etc. etc. etc. etc.) are going to stick to their brand regardless of what reviews and analysis sometimes reveal about the products involved. You don't always get everything you pay more for.
    I've seen the same hold true in reviews comparing Carl Zeiss lenses with standard Sony lenses (the Sony lenses are sometimes better! And cheaper!). That's not to diss Canon or Zeiss or any of the prestigious (or not as prestigious) brands. They're all good. But . . . . .

    • @YevZakharov

      Here’s the short answer: There is no difference other than price.
      Long answer: both the Rok and Samyang have updated their lenses since the making of this video. They now both offer AF. Specifications are identical in both lenses. In this particular case I’d have to do a side by side real-world test to find a difference.
      But that’s not the case will all Rok and Samyang products. With other lenses, Rok offers additional features that Samyangs don’t get. Kind of like getting the Lexus instead of the Toyota.

The software in your Canon camera can and do apply lens correction automatically when rendering jpg files because it knows exactly what lens it has and the proper way to correct it). Please confirm. Nice, well presented, review!

      Yuriev Olmos you bring up a very good point!
      I always make sure to turn off all Canon Corrections in my DSLR settings to make it as fair as possible.
      I truly believe that Canon was able to engineer their 14mm in a way that their glass minimizes distortion. However, my theory is that while doing so, they slightly compromised the sharpness and chroma reductions.

    • @anthonyrock5039
      @anthonyrock5039 Před 8 měsíci

      The canon 14 II L was engineered specifically to have as straight lines as possible with the most consistent sharpness level across the frame. in essence the test would better better served with a corrected version of the rokinon. This would ironically enough soften the rokinon lens as when you start to move pixels, you will inevitably get a slightly softer image as you stretch and and move pixels around over other pixel spaces. You will also get a narrower image as a crop may need to be introduced. If you go the other way, you may get a sharper canon. You must ask yourself if you want an image to be sharper or correct? If you want to correct CA then you will not soften your image but you will if you start to correct barrel or pin cushion distortion. Colour rendition can be changed without sharpness changes but you can also sharpen an image as well. If you shoot JPs then you will also have a softer image unless you change the settings to have more or less sharpness. I prefer a raw image with correction for distortion but then for me to control sharpness to taste. I look at both of these without the cost perception filter and prefer the canon due to its correct lines. I can fiddle with every image after shooting an interior but the question is always "how much fiddling will you do?" and then how much is the image fidelity worth to you? You can pick up a used version of either of these at a very low price.

      After shooting more with the Rokinon, I came to the conclusion that it's probably better to save money and buy the canon lens. Chromatic aberration can be fixed with in-camera settings and in post processing. However, you can't fix the massive distortion of the Rokinon. In some cases, it ruins the phones I've taken, which was sad. If there is any sort of horizontal line or horizon, the Rokinon looks pretty horrible.

    Toasting an old Bread.
    First could the overall brightness of the Canon vs the Boyer/Samyang/Rokinon/Walimex, just be down to the ambient light falling out of the Foyer? Noting that light can change quickly. And cropping that ⅓ of the image the overall brightness lever seem to level out.
    Two, and more to a point, any Tapeworm could work out how you managed to pull focus on the Samyang. But how did you do it in the (Peesumably AF), Canon? Probably by either half pressing the Shutter, or that other flavor of the month Back Button AF.
    Given the Canon L should have by most reasonable minds as good as or better than a no name KO. It seems to me that the Canon wasn't properly calibrated to your Body. I do not know if your Body has a Microfocus Adjustment setting or not. But it would be worth putting a nose in to find out.
    Now the Lilac aberration over the Sofa, and along the wall is a concern. Lending me to suspect that you didn't win the Copy Lotto.

    • @YevZakharov
      @YevZakharov  Před 11 měsíci

      On most of the photos I only used manual focus with both body confirmation and just visual confirmation by using the zoom function. I try to never rely fully on the Canon AF (half press) method. So in the case of comparison I chose a single point in the image to focus both lenses on. For night photography especially, I never use AF. Even when focusing on a star, it’s a unique point in the focus range. Not quite infinity.

      @YevZakharov  Před 5 lety

      Durst - If price wasn’t an issue, I would take the Canon. The barrel distortion on the Rokinon is sometimes impossible to fix. And you’re right, the CA and sharpness can be edited in post processing. The fact that the Canon 14mm has so little distortion is probably why it costs so much. The technology behind the glass is insane.

    Canon's lens is still more expensive because no other lens maker can do ultra wide without distorting lines. When it comes to real estate, straight lines trump perfect sharpness. Obviously it's not easy to pull off since no one less has beat Canon's straight lines years after this lens has been made.

      I think it’ll work for you. The newer updated Rokinon also has autofocus in it now. That means it’ll probably make your workflow even faster. It just depends on if the slight distortion of the lens bothers you or not. Try it out. In the worst case you’ll have to return it?

    Yongnuo has made a clone of the Canon 14mm f/2.8 which happens to have autofocus. It isn't that good at corners, but it's quite good otherwise. I have my eyes on that one too. I guess they can get away with this because the Canon patent has expired. Meike has followed suit. There's also the 50mm f1.8, f1.4 and 85mm f1.8.

    Come on don't beat around the bush the samyang is clearly sharper at all the apertures you've demonstrated,, the canon L lens is soft and CA are appalling, canon you should be ashamed to make a lens like this very sad indeed

      The sharpness and CA are bad in Canon, but at least it was better in every other way. Straight lines, more light, less vignetting. But still, for that price, I would expect it to be better in EVERY way.

    So...WHY $2000? Seems to me you are just paying for a Name and perhaps a little better build quality, but nothing for actual performance. So there is no point in spending 4 times more for basically nothing!

    Rockinon gives distorted images so what do we do? Gave an endless picture. The bitter taste of the cheap remains for a long time. Serious photographers will not buy it for even a single dollar.So Rokinon will redesign the lens if they want to purchase their own lens. Lenses of this type are for professional photographers who shoot architecture and such a lens will not do the job.

    CANON.....thats a 400$ lens that just blew the lens hood off your pathetic 2k$ lens.......What a joke.....
    Im finding this on a lot on the canon lens the more i compare their lens to other lens that are a fraction of the price.........
    Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II - price 2,000$
    Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L - price 800$

      Agree on everything except the last one. Those lenses are a whole stop apart, which means much bigger elements and more elements for further corrections. Also IS seems to be really difficult to develop and apply - just look at how jerky and noisy it is on pretty much every third party lens in the market. Also, it isn't practical to use a tripod all the time.
      I'm ot saying that the value is worth a thousand bucks more, but the materials and r&d probably are.

    Being these are both manual focus, the sharpness is not a fair test.

    • @YevZakharov
      @YevZakharov  Před rokem

      Yes and no... Both lenses have focus confirmation which means that the camera sensor confirms when you have peak focus. Of course in this case I was relying on the camera's capability to do so, but in fairness, at least the same camera was making that confirmation decision for both lenses.
