    $150,000 QUAKER STATE OPEN
Forum Bowl, Grand Prairie, Texas, Jan 21-26, 1985
    Durbin's 14th Win A Shocker
Mike Durbin, seemingly out of it with only one ball remaining to be thrown in the $150,000 Quaker State Open, stared In disbelief as Mike Edwards left a 4-9 split on what should have been his winning shot.
Edwards, only 23 and a non-winner on the PBA Tour, was as shocked as Durbin, and fell, 218-214, as Durbin capped a four-game performance to win his 14th title.
Edwards led this 160-man field by 278 pins following 42 games of qualifying and match play in gaining the top qualifying spot and had to wait until the fifth-seeded Durbin disposed of three other opponents to roll into the title game. Durbin started slowly, first disposing of veteran Teats Semiz, 185-170. He got better against Marshall Holman, 247-191, and then opened with nine strikes In ousting Walter Ray Williams Jr., 279-191.
Durbin started the title game with a spare and three strikes and found himself leading midway in the game, 118-98. Then it was Edward's turn, and he drilled home four strikes to take a 10-pin lead. All he needed was a mark in the 10th frame, and Edwards just missed converting the game-ending 4-9 split.

Mike Durbin was a great champion on and off the lanes. Mike Edwards bowled great going for his 1st title. Bowling can be a very strange game as anyone knows who has hit the lanes. Thanks for the video.

When this originally aired here in Tulsa OK, the local ABC affiliate chose to show a local charity auction rather than this tournament. So a bowling alley here rented a satelitte and massive TV (for the time) so it could pick up the feed from a different ABC affiliate to show. They set up bleachers and invited anyone to come down to watch. The place was packed. Everyone was ticked the local channel showed the auction rather than show hometown boy, Mike Edwards.

I watched this live and remember shouting “THAT SUCKS!!” when that 4-9 appeared as I usually rooted for non winners. Still, Durbin bowled great that day.

One of the worst breaks ever, considering the stakes of the shot. A tourney loser...

Durbin was straight cold blooded bulldog. Like a machine..

That was his A game. He seemed much less successful when trying to circle the ball and play inside…

Brutal break on a solid shot by Edwards. I know a lot of money was on the line, but I think Durbin was rooting for Edwards to convert the 4-9. Even during the trophy presentation, Durbin knew he was very fortunate to win.

Seeing how Durbin conducts himself, you're probably right. Im sure he wouldn't have been upset if he converted. Mike knew he had him dead to rights. Crushing bad break

Those edits during the last match...did you only have an hour of VCR tape to put this tournament on, and you were you down to your last few minutes of tape?
As usual, awesome tournament. I watched this in real time, and I was sooo rooting for Mike Durbin. Thanks for posting.

If Durbin had any type of bend on his shot, he would have left 30 wide open splits. As it was, he just broke down ever shot through the nose. And how ironic Edward's leaves at 4-9 on a pretty good hit for the match. Ouch

Maybe for the Senior tour, since others lately are making it in solely on PBA50 results.

Mike Durbin climbed the ladder as he was fortunate to win the Quaker state open when Mike Edwards could not convert the 4 9 split in the 10th frame
